How to clean acrylic brushes and minimize waste water

When you clean your acrylic brushes the right way, you minimize water contamination. Acrylic waste water is harmful to the environment, so we should avoid pouring it down the sink. Once the bristles are moist again, you can wipe ...

    Hoi Toon, ik begrijp dit niet helemaal….wat is grisaille?

    • @toon-nagtegaal
      @toon-nagtegaal วันที่ผ่านมา

      Dit is het laatste deel van de videoserie over toonwaarden, in de vierde video leg ik uit wat een grisaille is. Een grisaille is een onderschildering in grijswaarden. Het is een oude techniek, je onderzoekt eerst de toonwaarden van donker naar licht, daarna kun je er met kleur overheen. Het voordeel is dat je dan het moeilijkste gedeelte eigenlijk al gedaan hebt. Voor de zekerheid hier het overzicht van de video's: Video 1 The Importance of Grey (Introduction to Tonal Values) th-cam.com/video/_xJiHxcoJTQ/w-d-xo.html Video 2 Apple in Nine Tonal Values th-cam.com/video/FM00t17rnZQ/w-d-xo.html Video 3 Tonal Value Study of a Statue th-cam.com/video/j3kA4LoS7yw/w-d-xo.html Video 4 Grisaille (Underpainting in Greyscale) th-cam.com/video/14hbWOGoj5w/w-d-xo.html Video 5 November 29: Adding Color Over Grisaille th-cam.com/video/LsBWJy8i1lg/w-d-xo.html

    for anyone looking at digital art medibang and krita are both great free programs ofc if you just want the colourpicker/eyedropper tool anything would probably work (for example, gimp isn't a great program even for free but I assume it has some kind of colourpicker in it) Also your browser might even have an eyedropper I use firefox and if you go application menu (3 lines in the top right corner of the browser) > more tools > eyedropper you can grab the hex code (the #FFFFFF thing) of any colour on your screen without downloading images (although you'll have to look up a colour wheel and copy-paste the hex code into it to see in the wheel with all the information)

    I come from watercolours and am used to painting on white rag paper. I can see that sometimes it is helpful to paint an underpainting using a colour that is dominant in the final painting. Like you, my preference would be to start with grey but I don't really see why people say that white is difficult to start with, because as you add colours the white becomes less of an influence.

    • @toon-nagtegaal
      @toon-nagtegaal 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think that's because you're an experienced water colour painter. With watercolours you usually gradually build from light to dark. Acrylic painters often instantly try to mix the color and value that's needed. And let's say that for instance we start on a white canvas and we have to paint light blonde hair. If we mix the light color and put it on the white canvas, it will look rather dark. And if you're an experienced painter, you know that although it looks dark at that moment, when you add the surrounding colours it will start to work (just as you mentioned). But most of the times people don't continue blocking the rest and start adjusting that value and make it lighter, because it looks sort of 'wrong'. In general a kind of middle grey background helps. The light colors immidiately look light, while the dark colors also look dark. So all in all, it looks like you've already got enough experience not to be fooled by the lack of surrounding values and in that case just experiment and see what you like most! That's what I do as well. Usually I prefer working on a grey canvas, but coincidentally last few weeks I wanted to start on white canvases, because the white of the canvas instead of grey has another effect on the outcome depending on what you want. Have fun painting with acrylics!👍

    Learning to paint with only a few colors like so many teachers recommend is like learning to cook only by boiling water. It is true that there are a heck of a lot of things you can cook with water, but there's a hell of a lot you're not going to learn. It's the same with painting! I have yet in my life of painting seen anybody recommend a pallette that is both limited but will also allow me to paint what I want to paint. Such a pallette does exist, but I have yet to see anybody recommend it. You can't get used to a painting process by severely limiting yourself from the start. LEAVE THE OPTIONS OPEN!!!!!

    • @toon-nagtegaal
      @toon-nagtegaal หลายเดือนก่อน

      I understand your frustration, but the comparison with cooking doesn’t really hold up. In cooking, you need specific ingredients to create a dish. You can’t mix broccoli from other ingredients. Painting works differently. With a limited palette of, say, five colors, you can mix any color you need. A well-chosen limited palette isn’t restrictive-it’s liberating. You always have what you need without being overwhelmed by too many choices or overly complex color mixing. Isn't it great that when you understand the principles, you can mix yellow, red and blue to mix for example yellow ochre or burnt sienna? It's all a balancing act. And of course, maybe it's more practical later on to buy these colors for a faster workflow, but then you understand where they lie on the color spectrum. That said, please feel free to go your own way. Nobody says you must use only five colors. The idea of a limited palette is just one approach to help artists, especially beginners, understand the fundamentals of color mixing and relationships. Once you’ve mastered those, you can use as many colors as you like-it’s entirely up to you!

    I am a newcomer to the World of Art. I am fascinated by history, color theory, composition, all medias except oil. I'm spending several hours daily applying the principles but for some reason I detest and loathe tonal values. Thank goodness I "value" your teaching styles. I've learned so much from your tutorials. I even get a headache during the "tonal values" episodes. It feels like it makes my brain glitch and sputter. Is this something you've heard of before Toon? I'm just stumped about the odd reaction.

    • @toon-nagtegaal
      @toon-nagtegaal หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm so sorry, I've never heard of that reaction before! Luckily for you, this is the last video in the series 🤣. Each of us has our own curious quirks. For example, I personally love using charcoal, but I can’t stand the sound of it. Even after four years of art school, where I had to use it all the time, I never got used to it-it still gives me goosebumps! Maybe your reaction comes from finding tonal values a bit too clinical or maybe it's as simple as that you’re not a fan of working in black and white. Or perhaps it’s about overthinking versus doing. When you grab some black and white paint and just start experimenting, the analytical part of your brain often quiets down. That’s when you might actually begin to enjoy it. I’m curious: does this reaction only happen when you're watching and thinking about tonal values? Or do you feel the same way when you’re actually painting? Enjoy the process, and remember: not everything has to be your favorite part of art. 👍👍

      @@toon-nagtegaal Thank you for your reply. I painted about six hours today and pondered the tonal quirk during breaks. You are a fantastic teacher and very talented artist so I know if you dedicated a "series" to tonal values, it is fundamentally necessary and I want to continue advancing in my studies.( I am definitely improving). I think you nailed it about the black and white colors themselves. I crave bold ,vibrant, heavily pigmented colors and would be described as a gregarious personality. Your lesson on negative space and sketching catapulted my efforts. Thanks so much for your thoughts because tonal values are the only hiccup I've encountered. I’ve been desaturating my colors (with mainly the complement) for decades now but I still love saturated colors and include them in very small amounts on the canvas.

      That's great, that's exactly what it's all about! 👍You use the more saturated colors consciously and you are able to balance the saturated and desaturated colors to make the painting interesting. 🎨👍

    Love the demonstration. I just get a bit confused by the inteoduction of cyan and magenta as primary colors. Have tl reasearch more on that :)

    • @toon-nagtegaal
      @toon-nagtegaal หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, personally I like to think of them as primaries, even though we deal with pigments and they don't always react and behave as theoretically expected. But if you understand the principle of primary cyan, magenta and yellow color mixing gets way easier. And when you understand that system you don't even necessarily have to use these exact colors, but you'll understand what's happening when you're mixing. For instance: an orange biased red + a green biased blue can never produce a vivid purple, because in theory you're then mixing three primaries (green biased blue = theoretically cyan + yellow and orange biased red is theoretically magenta + yellow) and when mixing three primaries you get less saturated results. Enjoy painting! 🎨👍

      Ah that's a pity! Concentrating on painting + explaining in other language + filming at the same time sometimes is hard. In this case I think that I was caught up in the process of painting too much sometimes and then I forget that I have to stand at the side, instead of in front of the canvas (what I usually do of course when I'm not filming). I do my best, but I'm human and make mistakes sometimes I'm afraid 😅. Thanks for your feedback! 👍

    Hi Toon, this has really made me think! Rather than discard the excess brush paint onto a paper towel, I am going to try brushing as much as I can onto a sheet of gesso'd paper to see if it can become a kind of under painting for an experiment. I am very much a beginner so doing lots of experiments. I wonder how many layers of waste paint you can build up on a sheet? I am also wondering how effective passing rinse water through a coffee filter would be.

    • @toon-nagtegaal
      @toon-nagtegaal หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a great idea as well, also it would be interesting to see the results of this project, maybe they're great pieces of art themselves! 👍👍

    • @jondoh587
      @jondoh587 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My understanding is that the coffee filter would collect the larger pigment particles, but it would allow the acrylic polymer (plasticizer) to pass through and that is bad for the environment. Golden sells a flocculant kit and they also provide the recipe online. There are a couple of good youtube videos of the process, too. Basically, the acrylic polymer gets bound up in the flocculated particles and these are big enough to be captured by a coffee filter.
