The John Muir Trail | Day 8: VVR - Sallie Keyes Lake
I got a ride from VVR back to the trailhead. We were told to expect some haze, but about a quarter of a mile into the hike, it got thick to the point where the views across the lake were obscured, and it smelled like smoke. It was more than haze, and had me nervous since I didn’t know where it was coming from. Plus, being from the east coast, it’s not something I’m used to. Was I walking into a new fire? Should I even continue hiking? I spoke with some other hikers who reassured me a bit - that it was likely smoke that blew in from a fire quite a ways from the trail.
Eventually, it cleared in the late morning, and it had me appreciating the views even more. However, I had a fully loaded pack with 7 days worth of food, which was heavy. So, the climb up to Marie Lake and Seldon Pass was tough.
When I got up there, it was very windy. Tough to hang out for long. Still beautiful views though. The view from Seldon Pass looking back at Marie Lakes is one of my favorites. A daily theme throughout this trail is: how can something be so incredibly beautiful? And why? Why is it that we find nature to be so beautiful? In the Sierra, it’s everything, from tree bark and flowers, to the wildlife, and of course, the massive views. It really surpasses your wildest imagination, and I had already hiked this trail before. The awe doesn’t fade one bit. It’s still impossibly beautiful. And the deeper you look, the more beautiful it becomes.
I continued down to Sallie Keyes lake where there is a nice sheltered camp spot in the trees that blocks the wind, but still allowed me to enjoy the lake views as the sun set.
All in all, it was a tough day between the smoke, fully loaded pack, and wind. But I am grateful that the smoke cleared out, and it made the incredible views even more special. It makes me appreciate these experiences even more.
It’s good to do hard things.

Is this John Muir trail the one at Yosemite?
Yes it is! It starts in Yosemite and ends at Mt. Whitney, or vice-versa!
I found the backside or south side of Bear Ridge to be so beautiful! We did it after coming out of VVR on the late shuttle so we hit the backside during dusk. It was phenomenal. A lot of PCT hiker were camping on that ridge and with the sun setting I was jealous! And the Marie Lakes were some of my favorite section on the JMT. I loved that area and as a side benefit, it felt like Seldon Pass was a relatively easy one.
Absolutely stunning capture of the best parts of this section. Thank you. 😊
Good to hear! Thanks!
Took the same itinerary on our hike and loved this day! Leaving Lake Virginia was gorgeous. We took a nice dip in Lake Edison before the ferry came and really enjoyed our ~24hrs at VVR. Great, great place to stop.
I agree! This was a great day and VVR is a great stop!
Beautiful! A very nice hike,so glad you shared it! Stay safe out there and have fun! ☀️🤗
Thank you! Will do!
Where's your cook gear? Or did I miss that somehow?
I keep my cook setup pretty minimal with a cook pot, and I store my fuel cannister inside there along with my BRS stove. I also throw some smaller food items in there so all the space is used, and keep that in my bear cannister.
Hello! Checking in-are you safe from the fires in CA? We never know where anyone is in the hiking world, so just hoping you’re doing well. Prayers for all of the residents and first responders in this awful fire. 🙏🏼 Be safe out there!
Hi! Thanks for reaching out - the hiking community is awesome! I am safe and on the east coast but I have be watching and praying for everyone involved with these fires. Are you safe as well?
@ Hello! I’m so glad to know that you’re okay! Prayers are being said from all over the world, I’m sure. What a heartbreaking nightmare for those affected. I wish I could say that I am an experienced hiker, but I stick to the trails that are much kinder and much shorter! 🤗 I’m in the mid-west so the biggest worry we have are rare tornadoes and frigid winters. We have cold air coming in the next few days that are coming from SIBERIA! Brrrrr! I’m glad you’re okay! Thank you for letting us know! 🤗
I’ve been looking for this video.
I hope it helps! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
i really like the hiker POV video of the trails. the minimal music and narrative are top notch.
Thank you - that's really nice to hear!
no way this would be enough food for me.
What a place! We stayed there on the night of July 5th and it was stunningly gorgeous. Come out of Purple Lake was a bit more difficult than I had anticipated but arriving at Lake Virginia was so worth it.
One of my favorite places to camp on trail! It is a climb out of Purple Lake, like a mini pass, but such a great feeling to arrive at the lake!
I can't hike up there anymore but watching your video was the next best thing. Nice job!
That's really nice to hear, thank you!
Nice! Though an avid backpacker, I failed miserably with my food choices on the JMT. Though I tested, my tastes changed on that trail. Any bar that was sweet, bleach. I did love bringing Fritos and cheese to add to a chili Mac, they only dehydrated meal I had that tasted ok, and I did love fruit leather, my nuts and sour patch kids and jelly bellies to awaken my taste buds and small energy boost when water would get boring.
Haha it's weird how tastes change on trail! Were you able to make it with less than ideal food?
I'm thoroughly enjoying watching your JMT journey as I'm considering doing it at some point. I did Rae Lakes Loop from Kearsarge Pass for the first time this year, and considering several multi-day hikes in the Eastern Sierras & Yosemite for 2025 too. Thanks for capturing your experience to give me a better feel of what it's like! What dates did you go and/or what month do you generally recommend?
Thanks for watching! Rae Lakes is such a beautiful area! I went from 8/10 - 8/23. I would generally recommend August, although it's tough to pick the perfect time. In July you'll likely have more mosquitos. I saw very few in August, but the chances or fires and/or smoke is also higher. September is also nice with cooler nights, but even higher chance of fires.
@ thanks for the tips, albeit challenging finding that sweet spot. I’d like to do it solo sometime so hoping to find a time when there’s crossable/no snow/ice conditions and smoke cleared skies. 😉👍🏻
Awesome views. Thanks for sharing. What an experience. I hope to do the JMT in the next two years.
Thanks for watching! I can't recommend the JMT enough. It's something you'll remember forever!
I really enjoyed Red's. We got there in the afternoon of Day 4 for us on the JMT and my wife surprised us with a stay in one of the cabins. It's a great little stop.
Ah that's quite the surprise! That must have been really nice.
I hiked this trail with some buddies going in the opposite direction back in like 2011. Still remember the pass and Ruby Lake vividly. We didn't do the entire John Muir trail, but the part that we did hike was incredible. Gotta be the prettiest place I've ever seen.
It's amazing how these places stick in our memory! That's a really beautiful section to have done.
Had 3 double cheese burgers when I stopped on the PCT SOBO this year,so good.
Haha I bet that was quite the tab! Worth it at the time though! I always go over budget at these stops.
I'm loving this series of videos. Working in the Northeast I have not uet hiles out west. This is the first trail on my bucket list. The lottery demand drops after Labor Day so Im targeting Sept. 2025 or 2026. 😊
Thanks! 2021 was my first year hiking out west and I've been back every year since! I'm also in the Northeast and it's such a fascinating contrast to me. Best of luck in the lottery! The permit is tough but totally worth it once you get out there.
thanks for sharing! love the calm nature of your videos. looking forward to the rest of the series. your trt videos from last summer helped out a bunch for my trt thru this summer and i plan on hiking the jmt next summer.
Thanks for watching! That's good to hear the trt videos helped. You're going to LOVE the JMT! I'm a little slower in getting the videos out this year than usual, but I'll get them all out, eventually!
@ awesome to hear!
Beautiful day. I felt like the decent from the Cathedral Lakes area to Tuolumne was a rough one on my knees, but such a beautiful section through Lyell Canyon.
I feel like that one catches people off guard! I always do it first thing in the morning. Lyell Canyon is great - the first time I saw Donahue Pass it completely blew me away. Love it through there!
If we decide we can even get dropped off higher up
Hello! Checking in to see that you’re okay-hurricane Helene did so much damage and caused a world of heartache for so many. Are you doing okay?
I am north of the storm track, so no damage here. Definitely thinking of those impacted though. Thanks for thinking of me and reaching out!
@@give.me.wilderness Thankful! Yes, our prayers are with all who are hurting so much. It’s impossible for us to imagine what individuals are going through and it’s gut-wrenching to see them suffering. God be with them. I’m glad you’re okay!
If I do the JMT again, I’m going this route! Amazing and stunning.
I’d highly recommend it! Both Clouds Rest and Sunrise Lakes are worth the detour!
Wow. Such stunning beauty everywhere. And the horses!!! I could hear them in the background. Amazing.
Definitely a beautiful day and I love the horses too ☺️
One of the most beautiful hikes that you’ve done! Actually, I think it IS the most beautiful! So peaceful and as pretty as a painting. I hope the fire wasn’t bad. Such a pretty, pretty area! 🥾⛰🌲😊
Thanks! It was such a beautiful day and definitely a highlight! Really a perfect start to this trip..
Is the Bearikade worth the astronomical price? Plus it's not clear like the Bearvault which is convenient for finding food.
They each have their pros and cons. The Bearikade is lighter but more expensive, and it is black carbon fiber. The BearVault is heavier but less expensive, and it is clear so I found it easier to find food that slipped to the bottom of the cannister.
@@give.me.wilderness For sure, think I'm sticking with the Bearvault.
That’s awesome, thank you
Simply amazing scenery!!! Incredible.
Mac Charger is a good luck charm 💝
Push the bear can down onto the electronics? Watched that part twice.
I push the electronics down into the sleeping bag. So they are protected that way, and then the cannister is sitting on top of the sleeping bag.
I think the nylofume pack liners are more durable than the white compactor bags.
Yeah I finished my hike on the JMT and that seemed to be the case! No punctures or tears. The only thing I didn't like was how loud it was while packing my pack in the mornings. It seemed to get quieter as the trip went on and it got more use.
What kind of sleeping bag do you have? I have been on the struggle bus with packing with a bear canister. Love how you take the sleeping bag out of the stuff sack.
When I recorded this it was a Marmot Ultra Elite 20, but they no longer sell them. I’ve since upgraded to a Hammock Gear Burrow 20 and just completed the John Muir Trail with it. It packed even smaller and was warmer too. I recently posted a video of the gear I took on the JMT this year if you’re interested!
@@give.me.wilderness awesome thank you for responding! I want to stick with the bear canister for sure!
You did it again! So cool. I was on the JMT this year from July 1st - 14th. It was amazing and kinda lucked out with the 2024 winter. Early July was perfect...except for the skeeters. Unfortunately this first day brings back some bad memories, we did 18.8 miles with over 8k feet of gain (including half dome). Ugh. But hey, your worst day on the trail is still better than your best day in the office! Looking forward to watching your journey this second time!
That is a big first day! Especially if you are adjusting to altitude. Did you camp up near Sunrise Meadow?
@@give.me.wilderness exactly just short of the ridge that drops down into Sunrise Meadow.
I think you’re back, but technically the BV475 is not allowed on the JMT…. Do the rangers actually check the version, nope. But if that matters to anyone, then FYI. Love your vids, you motivated me to do the JMT this summer! I went July 1-14. After watching your TRT videos, planning on that next summer!
Yeah it sounds like since it's a semi new cannister it takes a few years before it's technically approved. But since it's the same design as the BV450 & BV500, which are approved, it seems to be accepted. They did check my cannister, and didn't have any issues with it. That's really awesome to hear that I motivated you to do the JMT! I was actually motivated the same way in watching someone's videos, so it's really cool to hear that I was able to pass that on. I hope it was a great trip! Enjoy the TRT next summer! It's a fun trail!
Very helpful; thanks
Good to hear! Thanks for watching!
After completing the JMT - the only thing I wouldn't any longer recommend here is the Hiker Hunger trekking poles. The tips fell off relatively quickly into my hike, and this has been an issue with the last couple pairs I've had. Next time I will try Cascade, Montem, or maybe splurge on an expensive pair. I was really happy with the Hammock Gear quilt. There was frost on the ground just about every morning, but there was no time that I was cold.
I used to love using Uni-liver from Universal nutrition. It added so much protein and I never looked like an emaciated string bean on the trail. They need to bring that shit back.
put your camera on the tripod , free up your hands
Congratulations, and thanks for taking us along this magical journey with you. Looks like the hike of a lifetime!
Definitely! Thanks for watching!
Do you track weight loss? I typically run 3500 calories a day and still loose about 1lbs per day. Seems like I burn about 5500 per day on a hike of this nature. Have a blast. Beautiful country to hike through.
Thanks! I don’t track weight loss but I think I lose a good chunk of it as I’m training. Then lose a bit more on the hike and feel good at the end!
Do you have a lighterpack link?
I do. I just added it to the description of the video.
Nice presentation!
Thanks!
How many days of food did you find the BV475 could hold? I've used the 500 before split with multiple people, but looking into what would best serve solo treks. Have a great time on the JMT!
Thanks! I fit 5 days in there on the Tahoe Rim Trail without too much issue, but I will need to squeeze 7 in at my VVR resupply. This is probably maxing it out and will be a very tight fit!
thanks for the rundown. Good luck with the hike.
Thanks!
Excellent!
Thanks!
It's 2024, and I just watched your whole hike while I was working. So beautiful. I've been researching a thru hike that wouldn't take 6mo to do...and this one looks like a winner. I've sumitted Whitney before and I'd really like to go again. Thank you for sharing this wonderful journey.
Thanks for watching! Out of all the hikes I've done, this is the one I'd recommend most!
Doing the JMT in a week and this video has been fantastic for prepping, thanks !
Good luck on your hike! Enjoy!!!
Concerning the individuals who fell, did they deviate from the trail to clime the surrounding peaks, or did they fall from the trail itself?
It was not on trail and was on the surrounding peaks. Many of the surrounding peaks along the trail are used for climbing.
Right on. And congrats on the TRT trek. I really enjoyed this series. The best scenery shots I’ve seen for a TRT series. Thanks so much. I start myself next week. So thanks again for the inspiration. Peace and happy trails.
That's super exciting! Have a great hike! Thanks again for watching - I really appreciate the comments and kind words!
