The John Muir Trail | Day 7: Lake Virginia - VVR
It was a cold but beautiful morning with reflections on Lake Virginia.
After Lake Virginia I descended into Tully Hole and then started the climb up Silver Pass. Some of the high alpine lakes that you pass on the way are really special. Nuumu Hu Hupi is one of them - I hope to camp there some day. The mountain walls just surround it. Sacred lands. There are a bunch of areas like this where you could spend alot of time just exploring around and off the JMT.
Silver Pass overall was really amazing. It’s a long descent after the pass but eventually you get to a canyon with steep switchbacks and incredible views from above. It’s not a favorite for many hikers due to the steep descent, but I really enjoy the views.
As you continue to lose elevation, it gets exposed and very hot for the last few miles of the day. It’s amazing how much the terrain and weather changes with elevation.
Eventually I arrived at the junction to VVR, my resupply stop, which is about 7 miles off trail on the other side of a water reservoir. There’s a ferry you can take across the lake rather than hiking the extra miles, which I did. It was fun being on a boat for a bit! Then, VVR is such a great hiker spot. Lots of fun hanging out with other hikers with tasty food and beer. They have everything a hiker could ask for. Many people take a ‘zero’ there, but I had to continue on the next day.
From here, the 2nd half of my trip would not go quite as smoothly as the 1st, and the challenges started first thing the following day…

Thank you! Will do!
Took the same itinerary on our hike and loved this day! Leaving Lake Virginia was gorgeous. We took a nice dip in Lake Edison before the ferry came and really enjoyed our ~24hrs at VVR. Great, great place to stop.
I agree! This was a great day and VVR is a great stop!
