I made a Mosaic Image of The Sun using The Daystark Quark!
With no astronomical darkness here at 56 degrees north, I thought I'd try some solar imaging using the Daystar Quark Hydrogen Alpha filter. I haven't had much experience with solar imaging, so the long days here during this time of year present an opportunity to gain more - especially with the Daystar Quark. Given that the configuration of the kit I was using meant I could not get the whole disk in the field of view, I thought I would try and take multiple images and stitch them into a mosaic. I've never tried this before - so find out how I got on!!
My usual disclaimer: As with all my videos, I don't claim to be an 'authority' on the subject in question, but hope my understanding and personal experience of it are helpful to others, as other peoples have been to me. I should also make it clear that I have no affiliation, financial or otherwise, to any of the products or vendors I may refer to.
Thanks for watching!

I Imaged a Galaxy Very Far Away, from a Long Time Ago......

After weeks of rain and storms here in the UK, there was finally a clear night!! As it was Galaxy season, I thought I would try and image 'The Silver Streak Galaxy' (aka NGC 4216), which is actually a complex of more than 20 Galaxies located in the Constellation of Virgo. I hadn't imaged this object before, so I was excited to give it a try. Find out how I got on! My usual disclaimer: As with a...

In this, the second of two sessions, I review my newly acquired ASKAR 300 FRA Pro Astrograph - this time on an emission narrowband target, using the Optolong L extreme dual band filter with the ASI 2600MC Pro OSC. In this first of two sessions, I review my newly acquired ASKAR 300 FRA Pro Astrograph. After finally getting the observatory up and running following the move, my intention was to image a broadband target (M31) so I could find out how well (or not) the chromatic aberration was controlled compared to the EDPH2 . The conditions weren't ideal and I didn't get too many subs, but the image was good...

Apart from the fact it doesnt get astronomically dark here at this time of year, Ive also been busy buying a new house. Hi Larry, The 2600mc has a 3.75micron pixel ssize which under ok seeing is a great match for my Esprit 120 APO. A good resource is astronomy.tools/ calculators where you can plug in any telescope/camera combination to work out the degree of over or undersampling is present. From what I can tell 3.76 microns is a good compromise across a wide range of scopes. I suspect your scope wont be radically different to mine..but check it out using the 2 camera specs using these tools. I have to say ive never had any huge issues using the 120 with the 2600mc and any problems ive had have been down to my ineptitude. Hope that helps - thanks for watching!!! Cheers R

    Nice review. The one Con to this camera was dodged by your setup. It is that it works best with an OAG being connected to the camera first to maintain the 55mm backfocus. Unlike the other ZWO cameras with protruding threads these are recessed. As a result…if you use a filter wheel, one must disassemble the wheel, mount a special flange with a light leak seal and more or less permanently mount the wheel to the camera. It also eliminates any tilt adjustment as the filter wheel is in the way of the tilt screws. I could not find anyone…now 2 years later…come up with a wheel mount system that does not take apart the wheel…and very fine screws I might add that will wear down switching it. I had hoped to use the wheel with a series filters on other mono cameras but now it’s locked on to the 2600. I have given up and went with a filter drawer system that gives me the freedom to switch the camera around. I just lost the ASIAir filter automation routine. I think ZWO shot themselves in the proverbial filter foot not following their other camera styles. Especially caught this newbie by surprise. I thought staying in the ZWO ecosystem would avoid this problem. Boy was I wrong. Thanks for the review again.

      Thanks for the info Todd. The only filter I use is the l extreme dual band so the filter drawer is perfect. In combo with the oag it gives correct backfocus system with my esprit 120. With the askar 300 fra this largely is irrelevant. Thanks for watching and for the useful comments! Cheers R

    At the end when you are setting the focus of the guide camera why is the lower left corner of the frame dark? Is the hole too small for the sensor? In the previous scene where you focus the main camera I see the branch you will use for the guide camera and there is nothing but sky in the back ground. Thanks.

    • @astrogadge2276
      @astrogadge2276 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Thanks for watching! The dark area in the lower left is an exposure artifact as the background (sky) is widely overexposed - the OAG image covers the guider chip - there is no vignetting. Again, the background in the main camera is very overexposed. Remember that the main camera here is a a CCD and the guide camera is CMOS and they have different bit depths. Hope that helps! Cheers R

    Hello, and thanks for the informative video(s). A mount for the 180 Mak? This is my first scope. I'm told that the manufacturers' mount weight limits are far too optimistic. Some recommend to divide the weight limits by 2, especially for Maks which need very stable mounts. Others compare the OTA weight to the mount weight as another guideline. Are the mount specs really that far off?

      Hi, I largely depends on whether you are going to use it for visual use or for photography. The general rule of thumb.is that the ota plus all accessories should not exceed 0.75 of the mound payload capacity. This scope has a long focal length and so will likely be more sudceptible to mount instability. I would say that to 'future proof' the scope somewhere between 0.5 and 0.75 would be prudent. An eq6-r or similar would be a good match imho. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!!! R

    Hello, Can I ask any owners of the current Skymax 180. Have you noted any knocking sounds resonating from inside the OTA if you rotate it. Mine does not sure what that could be. 😢

    Just ordered a Mak180 from FLO. Posponed the more expensive 9.25 SCT (my ultimate goal, when my observatory has been built). Was frustrated last winter when running a 560mm apo and a 8 inch Newtonian and a 10 inch Dobsonian, in minus 20 to 22 degrees celsius (in an open windy terrain), trying to keep my Newtonian´´s collimated. Hope my new Mak180 will perform in the cold winter, and I´´ll be ready for Beetlejuce if it explodes into a supernova.. Looking foreward to next fall (august/september) when astro-imaging becomes possible again here in Iceland..

      Yes, and double stars also ? I am currently investing in a summer-house on a 2 acre land, where I will be doing most of my imaging in the future (Bortle 4 zone) so I am currently not in the market for a very expensive SCT...(4 to 5 times the price)..

    I think ZWO is great and their products have allowed me to advance in this new hobby much more quickly than I once thought. But some of the things they do really baffle me. They include USB cables to customers buying their cameras costing hundreds or thousands of $s, that they know are complete garbage. And then you attach your new camera to their ASIAir and you can't access all of the camera settings??? Someone is smoking too much weed over their at HQs and overlooking the simple stuff. Make the ASIAir box a tad bigger and just stop including cables.

    The QHY oag-m, which came with the 268-m camera and cfw-l filter wheel. The documentation shows incorrect spacing for the oag to cfw. The distance should be 14 mm or more, not 6 as listed.

    Many thanks for this review. I'm interested in this scope also. Did you see this unusual lens design with the rear lens I think placed in the rotator? Do you think this is critical or good? What is your experience regarding balance and tracking vibration of the scope? The clamp is mighty but only one point attachment on the dovetail. But I guess its easier to balance with the foot design and very long dovetail. Do you think I have a chance to track it well with EQM35? At the moment I use ACL200.

    • @astrogadge2276
      @astrogadge2276 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! This scope is 2.25kg ..so even with camera and accessories its well within the eqm 35 payload capacity of 10 kg ( rule of thumb is that for good tracking you should aim for about 50% or less of mount capacity - although in my opinion its not that critical). I think this mount would be a good match with this scope. The scope is really well engineered and I found no problem in acheiving balance or with the design of the rotator system or the dovetail system ( which you can always reconfigure if you think its necessary). I love the petzval design..and its level of correction without having to worry about backfocus adjustment. Its a lovely scope. Hope that helps!! Thanks very much for watching!!! Cheers, Ray

    Great review, thanks. I bought a Skywatcher 127 Mak off a science teacher a few years ago (for €120 - bargain!) and I have to say it's the sharpest telescope I have ever owned for planetary and lunar viewing. Better than my Explore Scientific ED102, on a par with my Televue 76 (but with more detail due to bigger aperture) and far better than any SCT I've owned. Superb optics. I might upgrade to the 180 after watching this - if I can get one!
