Hello I am Ryan and I go on runs, but very rarely are they the exercise kind! For that reason and more I've partnered with The Internet to share entertaining videos and/or podcasts about any number of sub-cultural somethings that have intersected with my life over the years. Games, comics, skateboarding, videography - and I could theoretically have more experiences with additional things before I die! If this sounds interesting to you (not the me dying part) then come hang out! Let me know what you think! And please look at Patreon or PayPal if you'd like to support me and more! Thanks :)

Glad to help :)
Just clip that tie wrap bro.
Yeah probably, I didn't have any to replace it with so I just went with it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I never knew there was a Sega version of Tetris lol. I just learned something new tonight. Great gameplay as well, and honestly, the highest i can get is level 10 as well. Then it gets to fast for me.
Yeah I wasn't expecting it to speed down at level 10, definitely possible to go higher on a good day, might actually go back and give it another shot!
That Wolverine is a major hit! I too missed out on the original set and I won't buy them now, so expensive 💲💲. Been picking up some lots on eBay, these are so nice, I found small plastic frames at Walmart for $5 for 3 wall frames.
Same! Even the small glass clip frames are just 4 bucks, but the cards look good in just about everything. Very happy with the Wolverine!
Hey man, Mitch from comments here again. I know this has been released on Blu-ray but I haven't seen it and probably won't get around to it because it's too modern for my tastes. One of the last Shaw brothers films, Journey of the doomed sounds a wee bit like this, that film has an act that feels a bit like Romancing the stone, it's a terrible film by the way. As always my man, good to hear your thoughts mister.
Oh wow Journey of the Doomed looks like it's going for a real "Masters of the Universe" vibe, I could be into this
Hey. Love the hoodie! I still use mine as my primary hoodie....I guess they didn't make them with draw strings..love the videos.
Ray! Great to hear from you again! It's pretty much the best hoodie, at this point I can't remember if I took out the draw strings myself? None of my older ones made it through my kids' younger years unscathed, they probably ate it at one point lol
Mitch from Comments FTW - gotta love those classic Shaw Brothers films!
100%, my only regret is that I didn't start watching them sooner!
Hey hey my, it's Mitch from comments here. I have seen a bunch of Van Dame films and would avoid this like the plague BUT you have won me over and it's definitely on my watch list, just for the significance of it being the first HK action film made outside of Hong Kong. Now I haven't seen Painted faces, I want to and am pretty sure Sammo is in it as a grown up. Again something on my watch list. As always loving your work buddy.
Mitch! Not high art or anything but I really enjoyed it through the lens of Hong Kong action, and again given the care put into it :) Re: Painted Faces you are correct, Sammo actually plays Master Yu Jim-Yuen, kinda excited to see him act that one out!
great! I am over tha last few months obsessed with Shaw Brothers films. Have seen now 170. - And I really enjoyed KING RAT. 🙂 I think the only one I really "hated" was That Man in Chang-An (1967).
Hey 170 ain't nothing, and still a solid 155 or so ahead of me! Any others you'd put at the top of your list so far?
@@ryan_runs_ Just to name a few that weren't mentioned already: The Magic Blade 1976 Buddha’s Palm 1982 Bastard Swordsman 1983 The Lady Hermit 1971 The Enchanting Shadow 1960 (early "horror" film) Golden Swallow 1968 Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan 1972 The Tea House 1974 (love this one, but it os more a Drama/Crime film by Kuei Chih-Hung ) Death Duel 1977 The Sentimental Swordsman 1977 I love Chor Yuen films and Kuei Chih-Hung and Ho Meng-Hua and ... and and ... 🙂
Excellent, and some I haven't heard of yet!
@@the3rdpillblog934you have some brilliant titles on your list. I think the toughest watches are the kung fu comedy films from 78 onwards, that aren't that funny (Fighting fool, Tigress from shaolin and Boxer from the temple to name but 3)that said they also made some great comedy movies.
@@mitchsfridaynightsongclub2594 Thank you. I am going now more or less chronologically through the films, and I am in the early 70s.
oh boy! more chasers!
don't use them against me
"Todd McFarlane wasn't really my guy. Rob Liefeld was my guy". DUUUUUUUUUUDE. 🙁
Hey we can't choose who our guys are at such a young age, it just happens
@@ryan_runs_ LOL very true. In my case the owner of my LCS knew McFarlane before he made it big, so I got to meet Todd a couple times at the store before he ever did Spidey. I to this day wonder if I'd be such a McFarlane fan if not for those early experiences I had meeting him/having my LCS owner say "isn't Todd great?" all the time. So very much a "it just happened" thing. 😊
That's maybe the ultimate example lol, I'd be a DIEHARD McFarlane fan for sure if that had happened to me!
Mate thank you so much for having me back again, really enjoyed myself and always a pleasure to speak to you.
Tons of fun as always Mitch!
Quite possibly the best movie of ALL time. Sho’nuff! 😂
I have no evidence to the contrary
Mitch from the Comments, I'm only 10 minutes in and you are NAILING your list!
Paul you are one of those people who helped me and guided me. Always good to hear from you and thank you for all your support.
Actually I was wrong of course. I think I'd seen 360 or so Shaw movies at that point (including some horror, musicals, historical epics, and other stuff) but didn't have a definitive list then. I had read Silver Emulsion, in China, because there was nobody there to discuss Shaw Brothers films with!
I bet Silver Emulsion made up for it, I should've mentioned how in-depth his reviews are too, he really puts in the work!
There is a real irony to not being able to talk about those films in China. I am always up for a chat mister.
@@mitchsfridaynightsongclub2594 Always up for it myself, too. As for China, the Shaws didn't seem to make much of a dent culturally in the Mainland, though you could get the Shaw's light operas and historical epics like "Beyond the Great Wall". Locally, there had been a big trend of "Red Films" in the 60s which are fun to watch, stuff like "Third Sister Liu" which used the Yangshuo landscape beautifully, or "Loyal Overseas Chinese Couple" whose plot... can be predicted, painfully. They also did excellent TV adaptations of Water Margin, Three Kingdoms (REALLY good), and Journey to the West ("Monkey"), which gets played every summer like the Thanksgiving Twighlight Zone Marathon used to be in the States. But the Shaws were really focused on Hong Kong and outwards, and you can still feel that today.
Thats some dedication sir ive probably seen 41 shaw films well done sir really enjoyed this
All credit to Mitch, a man on a mission!
Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold, the sequel, is a straight-up kungfu film starring many of the Shaw Brothers stars (since it was co-directed and produced by the Shaws). Much better than the first film.
Sold!
These catch-up episodes are fun, but the diversity on this list is a little insane. Five Fingers = the movie that broke kungfu into the western market, Fate of Lee Khan which is kind of arthouse and kind of really not, Spiritual Boxer which is just okay (but may have historic significance as you say), and the Greatest Kung Fu Film of All Time. (Which could just as easily be Five Venoms or Enter the Dragon.) You have a lot on your list, but if I were backseat driving, which I have no right to do, I'd love to see more in-depth reactions - which are really good and really fresh BTW - than Bloodsport 2 & 3. Thanks for doing all this, it's great to experience these movies through fresh eyes!
Sincerely thanks for the insight, you're not wrong about the insanity! The catch-up episodes were a carryover from another film podcast I used to do where I had talked about them a bit already during the mainline show, but I had kind-of forgot that I did all four of those in 11 minutes?! I was probably a little too keen on making sure I hit every movie on the list instead of actually having some useful thoughts 😬 And yes, the entire list just continues the insanity, I came up in the 80s, really started moviegoing in the 90s, so there's more than a few on there that... don't necessarily hold up to any of the greats I've done episodes on so far. I still love watching the "bad" ones, but they do seem like the first ones I cut when it comes down to it (like American Ninja most recently), so I'd say it's unlikely both of those Bloodsports get an episode, for instance. I've been told "you can't watch them all!" and I think that might be accurate. Maybe.
Also, good idea to skip Kids from Shaolin. It's just a goofy horror film for little kids. I've seen that a couple times too and it's not what you'd call good.
At this point that's good to hear, I'll put it with the handful of movies that I've shaved off the list here and there, and there are plenty of questionable ones on the list still to keep me busy 😬
Thanks for doing this one - I am flattered. Putting this at the top of my Lau Kar-leung picks is pretty much heresy, since it's such a complete departure for him, but the Shaws were going to pour a lot of money into this, so they wouldn't trust a lesser director. But I always enjoy rewatching it... except form that totally laughable scene where Jet Li runs into the field in Guangxi and the really bad romantic music swells.
Thanks for watching! And for the indirect recommendation, I'm finding departures can be pretty interesting all on their own, this one very much included. And you have correctly called out the scene where I really started examining my feelings about the music, although the songs themselves I'm merely "fine" on, I think it's mostly the use (and over-use) that I found a bit more difficult. I will say it has a certain charm to it though, some of the goofier bits it seemed to work a bit better.
Hey man, Mitch from comments here. Now I know you and I have spoken about this, but I am not a fan of this film. Yes, seeing China in all it's glory and beauty is a revelation, and yes Jet Li is very skilled and yes the action is great but it doesn't feel like a Lau Kar-leung movie. I know he and Jet Li didn't get along and I think it's because Lau couldn't adapt to working with strong actors, he had a similar problem with Jackie Chan. Yes it's well made and looks fantastic, but I don't warm to Jet Li in this at all. This may be controversial but this is my least favourite of all Lau Kar-leung's Shaw films. I know Paul feels differently, but I can leave this one. As always loving your work mister.
Can't argue that it sits apart from every other Lau Kar-leung movie I've seen so far, which still isn't a lot, but enough that it stands out for sure. I do think the action, choreography is on par though, I don't know if I saw this in a vacuum I'd be able to call out Lau Kar-leung's touch but it's still a notch above. I'm probably somewhere between you and Paul then, not my favorite or my least favorite, but glad I watched it and would still recommend!
Hey hey my man, Mitch from comments here. I love the phrase American VHS shelf, which is something I would go to at the video rental store when I was a lot younger. This film is epic in scale, it's a slow build up and I love the fact Sammo did stuff like this. An awful lot of Hong Kong films are tonally all over the place and you k get used to it I suppose. Regarding Cinematic chaos, the end of Disciples of Shaolin is bonkers, 8 Diagram pole fighter is a wee bit. But Sammo is the master. Martial arts of shaolin, hmm not my favourite but Paul's case is sound as to why it's his top pick. I am around for a catch up mate and would love to come back and chat.
Mitch! Good call on Disciples, I should've thought of that, I mean LKL is no stranger to spinning A LOT of plates with his films for sure, while Sammo seems like he'll just go ahead and let them spin out of control for the entire last act of his movies lol. Alright I'll hit you up and we'll get something on the books, looking forward to it!
Thanks for the vid mate! Just replaced mine and this helped! Cheers from Aus
Happy to help!
Will the arms work with desks that arent the magnus desk?
Yes, I'd say as long as you have a spot to put the clamp there's no reason why it wouldn't work with whatever you got!
@ryan_runs_ yeah I'm currently looking at a few and alot of people are saying that it works mainly with the desk and I was looking at the ASUS ergo arm and it looks pretty nice
Thank you! Replaced mine today without a hitch thanks to your helpful video. Also put a patch on the new pad (thanks to the comments) to hopefully make it last even longer. Let’s all spread the gospel of plastic side beaters only on e kits!
This was a great run down memory lane, and I loved the discussion at the end about 2024. Can't wait for 2025 when I show up to help you make the Rock Band room great again! 😏 And thanks for sharing the photos & videos, so many great memories in there. That picture from 2011 is still classic with you and Matt straight faced and me looking like I'm having a seizure LOL. FWIW, I hereby give you consent to do whatever you want with any of the pictures/videos in there that I'm in. 😀 Lastly, believe it or not, actually the only year that PAX missed was 2020, there was one in both 2021 and 2022: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PAX_events#2021.
Just realized from looking through those photos/videos -- the last time all three of us (you, me, and Matt) were in person together at PAX was 2016. 🤯 2017 Matt wasn't there, 2018 I wasn't there, and 2019 was again without an Amberg.
That's WILD, I didn't even consider it so I guess I wasn't really lookin (re pax in 21 and 22). Re everything else: thanks! It really was kind of an eye-opener this year, the money is always such a big deal that I feel like I have to maximize every second, turns out that didn't have as much to do with getting up at 7 am as I thought it did. 2016 sounds about right, pretty much PAX tag after that, maybe someday we'll get the band back together :)
Tank you very mush ! Easy trophies with your video.
Happy to help!
Hey great video, may i ask if yours could rotate from horizontal to vertical orientation? mine cant 😢 after trying to loosen some screw still doesnt work, would help tonnes if you could tell me how❤
Not sure if this is going to help but... mine can. Either direction. Hard to say what the issue might be without looking at it but it should be able to!
Hi thanks for video
You're welcome!
The bottom of the clamp, the part that is under the desk that holds it in place.. do you know the dimensions of it?
Roughly 2 5/8 by 5 1/4 inches
@@ryan_runs_ Great, thank you!
Now I'm wondering if you could build one yourself for cheap
Fun idea! The analogue connector makes me think there wouldn't be any proprietary issues, but I'm definitely out of my depth with stuff like that.
thanks this helped me very much
yw, happy to help!
Im very thankful to you sir, you saved me from spending 1500 rs on roland service centre. Seeing your video i got an idea and opened my kick pad and noticed that the wire was only broken. I soldered it back and now its good as new. As a person from India where fixing such parts is a nightmare you are our savior. Thanks sir 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Excellent, happy to have helped!
Thank you so much bro :) I got it on my second run after i fall off on the first run.
Happy it helped!
Hey hey my man, Mitch from the comments here. I saw this around 30 years ago and it's due a second viewing again. I get what you mean about not fully utilising Jackie, as you see he was one of, if not the best screen martial artists, so giving him guns and knives is wasting talent, in my opinion. I know it's an unpopular opinion and some random guy will tell me movies aren't high art, embellished with quotes and suggest a bunch of hobbies I should take up instead, but I don't like Enter the dragon... I think Robert Clowse wasted an opportunity to showcase Lee, its like a James Bond film and I think the fights aren't shot very well - I prefer HK made films. Oh I tried watching Last dragon, but wasn't enjoying it, to be honest the trailer put me off. Putting it bluntly, I don't like American action films and that's my opinion. I am also not prepared to argue about it because as a wise sage once said, and I quote "arguing with someone online is like trying to teach a pigeon to play chess, the pigeon will knock all the pieces over, crap all over the board and then strut around like it's won the game." Always happy to support your channel and hear your thoughts mate.
Hello my friend! Jackie definitely made some smart changes with this one, I didn't talk about it but apparently he added the entire Sally subplot too, otherwise it was pretty much just him and Aiello kickin around. I REALLY need to look up Clouse, he obviously makes a splash with Enter the Dragon (which I haven't actually seen in its entirety, glaring omission there) but then also directs some real "questionable material," let's say, not the least of which includes Game of Death (which I have seen??), so yeah there has to be a story with that guy. And hey, the fact that The Last Dragon isn't everybody's cup of tea should not come as a surprise to anybody, I also welcome your thoughts anytime Mitch! (from the comments)
@@ryan_runs_ hello mate, I honestly can't watch Game of death again, I think it's Bruceploitation at its very lowest. I recently watched Fearless hyena 2 which was a film Jackie walked out halfway through making and director Lo Wei completed using similar techniques (look a likes) that for me is a pretty good film. We need a catch up mate, always happy to speak with you.
I mean it's hard to get lower than using actual footage if him in the casket, won't ever be watching that one again either. Pleasantly surprised Fearless Hyena 2 is worth a watch though, I had kind of written off the sequels after hearing about that mess. The third sounds like a complete disaster. Will send a message this week about chatting soon!
Hi I stumbled across your video and enjoyed it I'd like to say it's a cult classic as well as so bad it's good I was 13 when this movie came out To this day I still have that line pop Into my brain occasionally "The whole who's the Master schtick by Sho Enuff
Oh yeah, safe to say stuff from The Last Dragon will be popping up in my brain for years to come
a fantastic choice... I have one more for you.... Three O'Clock High....
I just watched the trailer, sold!
I'll never forget my early teen days on achieve360points
Good people, good convos, honestly my forum-posting pretty much began and ended with that site!
We approve of the replacement audio 👍
Seemed like the best choice of course
Hey hey my man, this again is a film I haven't seen, and probably never will. I struggle with the American Kung fu kids - I have seen loads of really terrible films in my time and I am older now, so will be selective in my viewing choices, but always will support you and your quest. Love the Bad Religion reference, I experienced the underground thing I loved becoming the next big thing. Jackie Chan tried breaking into America a good few times, haven't seen Protector but I watched Battle creek brawl recently, it's OK but I am looking forward to your thoughts mate. As always, loving your work.
Mitch! I very much get the selective viewing thing now, I do it with games too, and everything else for that matter. 10 years (or so) ago I just kinda realized that I was never going to see and/or play it all, but luckily it's also part of the reason I go hard on recommendations from friends, yourself included, because rain or shine that thing will bring people together! Even for a movie like The Last Dragon :). Unfortunately you have yet to recommend a bad movie so I have to go out and find them on my own! What was the underground thing you experienced becoming the next big thing?
@@ryan_runs_ Grunge mate mainly. I bought Bleach before Never mind was out. I saw Nirvana in 91 when they were unknown, a year later they were the biggest band on the planet. Grunge was my punk rock and musically it's how I probably identify. I have seen a couple of Yuen woo ping films lately, Miracle fighters and Buddhist fist are superb, definitely recommend - Shaolin drunkard is toilet. I have also been watching a fair bit of Jackie Chan too. We should catch up soon mate for a chat.
If you cant have a good time watching The Last Dragon... it might be time to take up model trains.. or crocheting. Like Pauline Kael said... and I'm paraphrasing.. "Movies are so rarely high art that if you cant appreciate great trash, you probably shouldnt watch films at all."
Great example, I was never in on the ground floor but seeing some of those obvious garage bands sell a zillion albums was definitely somethin else, that's pure 90s right there
Well said! To each his own and all that, and of course I've been guilty of piling on here and there, but more often than not there's something to appreciate, some little piece of a person that's worth a second look, and Last Dragon has far more than a few imo
Excellent video! Thank you so much!!
Happy to help!
Hello. Can you say how long the included cable is?
6 feet for the USB-C cable, 51 inches for the built in cable attached to the big buttons.
@ryan_runs_ thank you.
Two of my favorite guys! Glad to hear those fun memories!
I was surprised by a few of them myself!
That was so much fun to record, thanks for having me!
Anytime my friend!
That was a fun listen. I gotta have each of you guys on my show some time!
Can't speak for Adam other than to say "he's pretty agreeable" ;) but sure, anytime!
@@nerdyneo21 Forgot to reply to this, but like Ryan said I'm agreeable, happy to chat sometime.
my stupid-ass thought by "one run" they meant "in one take" like for a combo 💀 Thanks for the tuto my man !
Happy to help! I am also very glad it didn't have to be one take!
Not to worry, I just got it to trigger by getting a few secret spots
Glad you figured it out, it's been a while and I couldn't remember for the life of me :)
I’m playing on ps3 and have 96% sick goals and 4% pro goals but animal chin won’t unlock. Does anyone have any idea why this is?

Hey hey my man, good to see you back. I don't know if this was shot before 8 diagram or not but it was certainly released after it and it feels like an end of school party. I heard Lau Kar-leung was kind of badgered into making this by Run Run Shaw, a last hurrah for the studio. Hsaio Ho was Lau's last great find, he was incredibly skilled and acrobatic but actually had the acting chops to match. I find his performance in this mildly irritating but I know he is playing a brat, it just sometimes doesn't work for me. Fong Sai Yuk most of the records are lost about him and most of what is known is generally based on Shaw Brothers films. I have a great documentary on one of the Shawscope box sets called Rivers and lakes which explains how much of the knowledge about China's past heroes has been retold by Lau Kar-leung. It's certainly an interesting concept. This film doesn't get the love it should, it doesn't make my top 10 but the competition is so strong that it can't. Looking forward to your Jackie Chan western reviews mister. Really enjoyed this one mate.
Back right before I leave again! Yeah I can't tell if this movie feels like a victory lap/end of school party or if it's just that effortless for Lau Kar-leung at this point. Going to say it's a bit of both! Must be second nature to him at this point if this is what he does when he's badgered into making something! Honestly I didn't mind Hsiao, but I'll admit he's basically one note until the very end. Great end tho. Re: China's past by way of Lau Kar-leung, I believe it! Despite the endless entertainment his work does also feel respectful, even reverent. I touch on it for a second in the video, but even if it's categorized as "folklore" that's obviously still very valuable, and rich in cultural knowledge and/or history, whatever you want to call it. It's a big part of why I love it!
