Anytype: The Best Offline Alternative to Notion
As someone who is planning to buy kindle and confused about these models, I appreciate your comment that the new one is not much of an upgrade. This will save me a lot of money. Thanks
I heard about Anytype a year ago, but have not tried, because I was quite happy with the app I was using. I was a Notion user 3 years ago, but dropped it completely when it was obvious that privacy was an issue and development picked up to point where almost everything broke……still had my data, but my layouts were destroyed. I calculated it would have taken me at least a few weeks to refactor everything, if not longer. Anyway……..I have decided to move on to try Anytype, it’s early days it looks like a great experience…..AND is local first which Notion wasn’t. Let’s see how I go with this. Looks promising for my use case.
"Anytype is locked into passphrase nonsense" Do yourself favour. If you do not understand privacy issues, don't crap on them. It seriously undermines your credibility - a lot. If you took the time to understand why anytype uses key phrase, you would understand how great that is. You may not agree that your particular usage/thread models demands this level of privacy, that is fine to state. Butyou are making a video to the general public, not minions that follow your own personal likes/dislikes. You are not being objective at all. I chose anytype precisely because of them using IPFS with key phrase you add to your password manager. They have a stand alone, fully offline app. Not Capacities which is tied to the cloud and who knows how your data is used.
Would you be willing to explain to me why a key phrase is better than a password? I was a little confused on your objection, but I can't find your other comment now. As I mentioned in that response, I have no real issue with a key phrase, I just find it inconvenient and slower than a password.
this seems so unnecessarily complicated, I work with Obsidian, Capacities, Logseq, Airtable, Coda ... but I see no benefit in Anytpe. Anything I missed?
I know you're a Mac guy, but constantly referring to an IPad is a different genre. The Scribe is an E-Ink / E-Note / E-Reader.
For sure! My comparison to the iPad is mainly due to the sheer number of people (both in comments and in person) who remarked "for the same money you could just get an iPad." They're separate tools, but people like to compare them a lot for hand-written notes, so I thought it'd be beneficial.
@pianomacpower good point.
I just watched a tutorial on Spring Boot 6 and Anytype is harder to understand
The comment about "passphrase nonsense" unfortunately disqualifies the entire video, as the author has not understood the core approach of Anytype and omits the most important point that Anytype has for itself: data security, encryption and (if desired) data locality. I myself also know the struggle of the complexity of the application, but to simply dismiss this core element with "passphrase nonsense" just shows that the examination of the application was not deep enough to be able to make a qualified comparison.
Interesting argument; I think my position might've been oversimplified with how I portrayed it. I have no issue with security features, I just find a combination of a few random words to be needlessly complex. To me, it genuinely feels like a way to be more unique, rather than more secure. The only difference between the passphrase and a password is that Anytype chooses your phrase, thus preventing people from reusing their favorite password. But I don't find this a compelling argument for why a passphrase is better than a password - it feels like a method of ensuring security, even for people who don't care, at the cost of convenience.
I am not trying to be a ANYTYPE Fan but anytypes entire app is OFFLINE
lol, i forgot that the scribe can use a browser
The scribe browser experience is something else 😅
@pianomacpower I might be giving away my age, but it's like browsing on a pre-smart phone era flip phone. Lol
I just got the colorsoft, its pretty cool. I might regret that I traded in my paperwhite for it, but it is still a good portable option. I use my kindle scribe pretty often and if the new software is coming to it, then I'll stay there. My optimal loadout would be a color scribe for the larger reader and a paperwhite for the portable one. (I know both are portable, but hopefully, you know what I mean.)
anytype is honestly pretty stupid
Anytype accound making thing is just plane better for security and that's what they are aiming for
I would love it if I could choose to make a property/relation global or tied to a specific object type. Anytype's relations library makes me crazy.
Very good points made in this video.
The Oasis had 3 generations (with only one major change between the 1st and 2nd gen)
Amazon didnt announce these out of nowhere!! I can tell when theyre releasing the next model paperwhite.......oct 2027
There's a vacuum left from Notion now that they are focusing on enterprise and collaboration. I think capacities will grow faster as their tradeoffs seem more in line with growth
Can the scribe do google docs as well? Anything google?
It has a web browser, but I haven't tried Google Docs on it yet... I wouldn't suggest it, given the slowness of the keyboard.
The OASIS battery sucked and the charging port was obsolete, The form factor was excellent. As for the Kindle Scribe, I have the 1st gen., I bought it for the form factor of a larger screen, I can't say I baby the device, I haven't spilled anything on it, hasn't been anywhere near the elements as such, but has seen it's time in a bookbag, and some tossing around, no issues there, same Amazon cover, Just ordered a MOKO tablet sleeve, but I wish the Scribe came with some standard of protection rating. Still clunky with highlighting and note taking. I've lost my premium pen, and yes I pre ordered. I bought this as a dedicated reader with ability to note take. I have yet to find the need for Bluetooth/Audio. I enjoyed your review.
I think the fact that there’s no bin where you can find things if you accidentally delete them is awful. You could have a whole folder full of ideas & accidentally delete it & then it’s gone for good as there’s no way to get it back. Also, no ruler function makes the notebook more scruffy. There’s been too many times where I can’t open a folder or notebook. Restarting the scribe sometimes helped but sometimes it just seemed to take time & randomly rectify itself. That’s no good when you urgently need access to important notes. I’m really excited about the updates. Notes that are hidden on the book page are no good to me, so the new notes feature will be brilliant. I don’t have any problems with writing using the case I have. I’ll check which one it is & update this later.
Is there no improvement to processing speed or page turning when reading for example?
I don't know yet, but my best guess is no. Given that Amazon says they're both the Kindle Scribe 1st Generation, I'd assume the internals are the same. I'd love to be wrong, though... faster refresh and faster loading would be great.
@ what’s the reading experience like on this compared to the latest paperwhite? In terms of how quickly the page turns specifically and the book loading?
It’s a bit unfair to title your video “The Next Scribe Isn’t Good” versus saying there’s minimal updates. It’s a good as the first, which you own.
Touché. I was more responding to the general trends of saying "new Kindles are game changing!! (Not clickbait) by taking a more balanced approach. Admittedly, I have no issue with the new kindle scribe, but I think marketing it as something new is also unfair.
I can’t seem to put a calendar in my sidebar, is it only for mac users?
It should be for windows users, too... make sure that you have the view for a set working, and then try to put that set into the sidebar? If not, maybe a bug report?
@@pianomacpower hmm, will check when I get home, thank you!
Me: What did you do in your previous job? Kindle Scribe engineer: iPhone.
Hi, thank you for such good a clear explanations, you are very kind to share this with us newbies. I wonder if you might be willing to share this setup as a template, or whatever they are called in AnyType? There is a significant learning curve to using this software and it would be great to install this and see how you did everything. Right now I'm using Google Sheets as a database - save me from myself!
The spreadsheet productivity people scare me; there's no way I could pull that off 😅 I'm not sure how I could share this setup, short of downloading it as a zip and then putting a drive link here. In Anytype, you can always try checking out the Any Gallery, where you can install workspaces straight through the app. I'll see if there's any way to publish mine there.
@@pianomacpower Well I like your approach and it looks like it makes a lot of sense as a starting place for this program. I'm always curious about these things but I usually don't follow through mainly because there's not a really great way to export the data once you get it in there.
I am just starting to 'try' Anytype and I'm finding it insanely fucking annoying because of all of the random connections, objects literalling everywhere. It's hell for someone with ADHD and there's no simple way to nest a folder structure.
I really needed this, thank you!
So in other words, the downsides far outweigh the upsides. So we shouldn't buy the Kindle Scribe. Got it.
I love the new scribe... Can't wait til mines come
Calendar content starts here: 3:35
Let's be honest: the real gamechanger will be a colour Kindle Scribe. As to the Oasis and the buttons, they've been implementing and removing them for years. Each time they come back, they make you pay extra (Voyage, Oasis), trying to sell you basic technology as a luxury you have to pay extra to get. Those who read laying in bed know way too well how importanti it is to have a larger bezel with buttons, so as to hold it firmly without needing to lift a finger.
I had never actually heard of the Voyage before this point... that makes the Oasis situation even sillier in my opinion. Instead of pushing unique versions, they should keep iterating updates to each model. Color on the scribe will be great, but I wonder if they'll try and keep it as a one-of-a-kind kindle as long as possible.
@@pianomacpower the voyage was the first attemp at a device with buttons after years of leaving them behind. It was a very interesting light device, as the 'buttons' where somewhat hidden and flush with the bezel. Also, there were two kinds of buttons on both sides. I bought it in 2013 and it still works perfectly. Too bad it was never updated (the Oasis came out, with its premium expensive heavy design and materials) so it didn't even get the warm light 🤷🏻♂️ I wouldn't be surprised if a new kindle with buttons will come in the next few years. Now that they have raised the prices of the whole lineup, it will be a lot easier to make an even more expensive device with buttons, just to make us customers 'happy'. I may be wrong but I just see a strategy, and it reminds me of Apple.
As much as I liked the buttons and the shape of the Oasis, the battery was terrible…and I believe the ghosting was worse that the Paperwhite.
As someone that bought a Scribe in March….i was really happy that there wasn’t a major update. I would’ve had major buyer’s remorse.
Plus I’m guessing the price was way better too :) I hope the software features make it to all scribes, I’m guessing they should. I just want to access my PDF annotations on other devices and maybe a quick access drawer to recent notebooks and books.
Oh, touché... yeah, that would've been really rude to pull right after the October prime day too.
@@DigiDriftZone I got a pretty good deal, with a trade in. I got the 16gb with basic pen. Then contacted Amazon and asked if I could just upgrade the pen to the premium, and pay the difference. So, they gave me a credit to buy the pen, so, I only had to pay the tax for the premium pen. I was pretty happy about that.
@@pianomacpower makes me think they probably won’t do a complete overhaul for a couple of years.
I prefer the basic pen -- so there's at least one person in that camp. :-)
Honestly, I bought a scribe on this last prime day with the basic pen. I really liked it but definitely found the basic pen to be a hinderance. I decided to return it mostly for the pen. I know I could have bought it separately but I figured at that point I might as well just get the new one and call it a day.
Yeah... a lot of other comments seem to like the basic pen, but I get your preference for premium. Looks like the refurbished sale is over, but it'll probably go up again before the Scribe 2 ships in December, so there's a lot of options there, especially with the new premium pen.
Contrary to PianoMac's comment to the effect no one wants the standard pen, I own both and never use the premium pen. The little button on the side accidentally gets triggered when writing and the editing tools (erase for example) are right on the screen and easier to initiate then say flipping the pen to erase.
I stand corrected, then. I'd heard lots of discourse online about the superiority of the premium pen (which I agree with), but I'm glad to hear that the basic has its fans as well!
This is the biggest reason I don't like the premium pen -- the button just feels in the way.
I’m getting the new scribe in the Metallic Jade colorway. The new AI summarization features and active canvas will be great as a student, and in many years, when I am no longer a student, I will pursue research and mental health counseling, so it is a long-term investment for me. I could have gotten the original scribe, but as of now, the 64 GB is hard to come by, and I prefer the new look. If I had the previous scribe, I would not “upgrade” since the software is portable, but for me, it would be worth it as the first thing I would be using the new one for is a research project.
Oh fun! I am hyped for the new color - it's always nice to have tech that's not grayscale. Active canvas is super big, AI I'm less excited for... I will say that, as far as I've heard, people usually only get 64GB if they're using audiobooks. I think the notes are generally pretty small, storage-wise. But I'm excited for you to try out the new Scribe, regardless! It'll certainly be nice to be able to reference old work years later.
When you start earning, you will try to get the new models. Everything you bought as a long term investment may become redundant. My experience :)
As a writer, the new rubber eraser on the new Scribe alone is a big deal to me. It’ll feel more natural to write and erase with. Also, the fact that you can write directly on the books themselves is pretty neat along with the AI implementation where if you change the font size your notes won’t disappear, you’ll still be able to see them. As far as design goes, I’m personally a fan of the white bezels now and how sleek it looks, makes it seem more like a notebook to me. But I can see why if you already have a Scribe why you wouldn’t want to upgrade. I’m personally going to be buying the new one since I no longer have a Scribe.
Oh nice! Do I want to know what happened to your old scribe? 😅 As far as hardware goes, I guess I didn't really talk about the new pen. I've heard some people worry that it'll degrade quickly, but I'm interested to see what happens with it. I don't really mind the white bezel, and I've heard that they might fix the gap between the shell and the bezel, which I'd greatly appreciate - I think my issue is more that there's not much new aside from some cosmetic changes. New colors are nice, though, and the software has be excited.
If you are getting software update to old scribe then buying new one is just .. novelty addiction
You can buy the new pen for the old scribe
You're a writer you say? I have one question; can a person write a book using these devices?
@@clivepilusa7734 That... might be hard. Writing it out would be easy, and I've never run into a "page limit" or any performance issues in giant notebooks. You'd really want to do all of your edits on a computer, though, and sending the whole file through writing-to-text may take a while. I'm also not sure how good the conversion process is - it might get a few words wrong, depending on your handwriting. But I'm sure it could be done, and is probably better for getting first drafts out of the brain than staring at a screen!
can you sync anytype calender with google calender
No... it just pulls from any set or collection that has a Date relation.
The regular pen still magnets fyi - it's annoying to erase with
Oh really? For some reason I thought only premium had the magnet... that's good to know.
2:41 - incorrect! I copy/paste notes between notebooks and Epubs all the time. You just select and copy in the first book, navigate to the second book, and use the clipboard option in the pen menu. Very easy
At 2:10 you say Capacities confusedly calls sets collections. But in Capacities a Anytype set is just a query. And collections in Capacities are Anytype collection limited to one type. In my opinion the terminology of Anytype is insanely confusing.
I already know the apps, but i don't feel like I unterstand your decisions.
Great review.
Might buy one but tried on Amazon days and they said that the 32 gb and the 64gb were no longer available … the only one that was selling was the 16 gb which means they are trying to get rid of the smaller version and also seems like they are about to come out with a new one. Sorry I’m not getting stuck!
Yeah... they're also out of the premium pen. I was looking for a friend, and they only have the basic pen models on sale. Maybe they're clearing stock for a new model? 🤔
