Hey PianoMac. Could you consider doing a video comparing Obsidian and Anytype? Talking about things like features & pro and cons for each, which app is better suited for what kind of user, ease of use/learning curve, what would it take for Anytype to reach Obsidian S-Tier level if it can (Anytype potential), etc. I've recently delve into the Second Brain/PMK rabbit hole and am currently leaning towards Anytype out of these two. There haven't been direct comparisons on YT and I'd appreciate your input!

Heck yeah! I've needed video ideas; many thanks for giving me this one!

Same here I really like the look of anytype (looks better than obsidian imo) and it seems to have a lot of potential.
I’m looking forward to your video :)

@@pianomacpower More anytype videos would be amazing! :)

I second this as being dope. I was getting into obisidan for a while. I ended up installing so many extensions and trying to make it do everything I realized I am just wasting my time doing too much.
Anytype is actually open source, and basically has the important plugins built in. Which means I don't need to trust like 50 random developers with my notes.

Good comparison and out of the apps discussed that I have tried (7 of the above plus more)I agree with your assessment. The other aspect that I think comes into play is data security and cost of subscription. I also despise subscriptions but in honesty I can’t complain about bear with its very reasonable and affordable cost. Some of the newer tools are asking waaaay too much for half baked products that frankly are still in beta. Not many offer e2ee
Originally I started with bear years ago wandered off but keep coming back to it as it still has capabilities that Apple notes still has not (backlinks, mentions, data portability)
Anyway.. great clear concise video - thanks

For sure! I have also been tempted by Bear - it has the best (and most reasonable) price. I think the development is a bit slow, but given how solid and stable it is (plus it works on Apple Watch if that's your thing) I think it's more than worth it. It has gone up to 3 dollars per month, but 30 dollars for a year is very fair. If I was going with a more basic notes app, I would choose Bear over Obsidian or Apple Notes immediately.

Stopped at "Obsidian does everything (Roam) does but better." Not a Roam user any more and am an Obsidian user now for long form writing, but clearly you haven't spent much if any time with Roam because it absolutely does do certain things better. Contextual back-linking of block references would be the biggest example for me. You may not care so much about that, but it is something Roam does better.

Ok, that's fair. I personally haven't used Roam a whole lot, so that was a generic claim that I do admit wasn't really backed up well. Overall, I've seen people say that Obsidian can do basically all of it, but back linking a block is something that I just hate trying to do in Obsidian. Touché.

@@pianomacpower thanks for leaving such a gracious reply, and I’m sorry my original comment wasn’t. We can’t expect reviewers and content creators to be experts in everything, so generalizations are bound to happen. (I’m also probably in the minority, most people looking for a note taking app probably don’t care about things like the niceties around block referencing and context).

What you think about Heptabase and Affine?

    • @pianomacpower
      @pianomacpower  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Heptabase is paid, and I am poor, so I haven't ever tried. Affine I had forgotten about, but now I'm going to take another look... it has pricing, but the free mode seems nice. Depends on how it runs. Expect it in an upcoming video at some point.

    Obsedian surpasses everything

Obsidian can do everything, but my problem has always been that it can't do a lot of things at once. Having to do the setup for multiple plugins, and making sure they don't contradict each other has always been my struggle.
I do agree; if you want to do a certain thing, Obsidian will always be able to do it. Except maybe super smooth databases.
