    gonna make myself comeback to watch this video everytime internalized racism/texturism comes crawling back in me. I get that the path of getting rid of the hundred years long of stigma around black people is not an easy but we can't expect it to go away by being afraid of listeting to the raw truth. I'm really glad that youtube is starting to recommend me great videos like this these about this topic past few months.

    I don't understand how we started to talk about "protective styles". What are we protecting our hair from? Our ancestors didn't discuss the need for a "prrotective style", why are we? Who invented that term? Who's making a profit from this "protective style" movement?

    I have matte texture hair. It doesn’t shine naturally and I never really bothered with it because nothing worked. But now I’m realizing that this is literally how nature. At first, I was like “I must have damaged my hair or I’m not finding the right products. I’m too lazy. Forget it.” Now, I’m like “Whew. Peoples always complained about my hair being this way , ever since I was small so I guess, this is my truth. Thank!

    So, revisiting this video after originally posting. And I think it is very easy to “blame” and point fingers at others for self hatred when the world we live in isn’t always kind to us for existing in our natural state. For many women, they do it for survival and as I mentioned in my originally post; opportunity. We don’t come into this world, hating ourselves, that comes from the outside. And yes, wearing your natural hair does have real world consequences. Videos like this is impactful because it allows women to confront the narratives they internalized about themselves, whether consciously or not. Some women genuinely believe “ it isn’t that serious.” But it can be a bit insensitive to women who may have not. So, while this video is extremely impactful, it misses the larger systems in place and shifts blames on victims. This isn’t to say we can’t liberate ourselves, but when we have these honest conversations, we need to give the whole picture, not just the result of generations of trauma and pain. I’m not saying we need to pacify anyone but compassion is always needed.

    Hello, while I do agree with some of the side of things you say, I would also like to say that there’s always two sides to a coin. 1) About the stretching: If anyone feels like stretching their hair would make them feel better(maybe you just feel like doing a blowout Afro or style)then I don’t see why not since it’s just hair, but I do agree with you that people need don’t need to stretch their hair to validate their length 2) Not all professionals are to be trusted, even if they’ve practiced on many people, look at their long term clients reviews to see if they are to be trusted 3) About oils and butter/ moisturising. Your hair can still absorb water even when coated with oils and butters since our cuticle edges have gaps and it highly unlikely you can seal the whole gap. Even with oils and butter, it is very hard to prevent the tiny water molecules going in and out of your hair/cuticle. The water content mostly depends on the humidity in the air around you(your location).Though I believe that butters, oils or leave ins helps so the water content in your hair leaves slowly. Here(west Africa) we have only two seasons(dry and rainy season) during dry season; which is our current season; we experience harmattan during dry season. Harmattan is a dry wind, so dry upon dry. During this season we have to seal in moisturise with something thick; both skin and hair; and if you use only water, your hair will break badly. We also use different styles to protect our hair because just tell your hair goodbye if you want to do wash and go throughout the 6 months period of the season. Shea butter or petroleum jelly is used mostly during time. Nonetheless, I will say it depends on where you are. There’s a reason why Africans in dry parts mostly use oils and butters(and clay if you are adding what people did during the olden days). Sorry, for my rant 😅😅 Also, I will like to add that due to our hair being kinky and going against gravity, sebum from our scalp can’t reach the ends and total length of our hair, so we need oils and butters to do that for us. I mostly use oils and butters for my hair. Another this is that hair is mainly made up of proteins, lipids and water, so these things must be in balance 😊. If you think anything I said is not correct, I would like to hear your thoughts and studies if you have any. I would love to read studies on our hair, but in all I hope you keep in mind that hair is a vast topic and there are not much valid studies available(and some cosmetologist and hair scientists do get some things wrong). I love lab muffin beauty science. She has some videos on hair,she’s a cosmetic chemist and breaks down the science of things. Have a good day, I hope you get to read this. I would love your insights and thoughts on what I’ve said

    It looks like we're dealing with internalized racism. Everything massa used to say about our hair is coming out of our own mouths! I'm happy Black women have stopped using harmful relaxers, I just wish we embraced our hair texture the way it is. People are damaging their hair chasing certain looser textures and heat damage is a real thing. An anti Black world won't embrace Blackness but we should be a safe space for afro expression...

    I wonder what your opinions are on all of this stuff now knowing that a lot of these “ tight curl specialists” have caused horrible damage to peoples hair with their recommended practices.

    • @sigh_yuri
      @sigh_yuri 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      the stylists are not the ones causing damage. the clients don’t have enough courage to trust the process, so they add and subtract things from their routine without telling their stylist. most of this hair stuff is a mindset thing, and if you’re not willing to believe your hair can exist without oils, butters and creams, you won’t let it. also, be aware that new growth is sometimes mistaken for breakage if you didn’t know your hair had breakage before, and some ppl sensationalize for views. controversy gets clicks and misery loves company.

    • @jasminet.4255

      @ I don’t know who you’re referring to but I am referring to Rosie Amelia and Shelly v as well as dozens of women in their comments sections who have experienced damage. Both of these women went to CIK stylists and followed their recommendations for over a year. It was only when they went to non CIK stylists and had their hair stretched did they realize they had severe damage. They had split ends from roots to ends forcing them to eventually big chop. They have videos on their yt channels documenting all of this. If you are talking about these women, it is very problematic to suggest that they are sharing a fabricated experience for clout. It’s important to believe black women. These are grown women who invested hundreds of dollars in this method and their stylists. I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t have done that just to go rouge and do whatever with their hair. They could’ve done that for free. I think this method can work for some people but not all. I find it problematic to promote it as an infallible, science-backed method that works for all naturals when it has been proven to cause damage.

    A lot of people don’t fully accept what natural hair stylists say because for a long time a lot of black stylists didn’t know how to or want to do natural hair. People had no choice but to seek advice from other women with natural hair. And the truth is, a lot of them still don’t know what they’re talking about. Going to cosmetology school or a few classes doesn’t guarantee that a hair stylist knows what they’re doing. You can take advice from hairstylists, but it’s still important to trust your intuition when caring for your hair. A hairstylist only spends a few hours with your hair but you’re the one living with it everyday.

    • @sigh_yuri
      @sigh_yuri 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      a hairstylist understands the science behind hair, and that science applies to all hair. we’re not anomalies or exceptions just bc we’re Black. the specific products it applies with may differ but the concepts are still the same. the evidence of their expertise can be seen on their socials, which many won’t go to bc of fear of confirmation. this unwillingness to do the work to find the right stylist is rooted in natural hair community mindsets and helps keep our money in their industry’s pockets as we continue to be confused abt our hair struggles - which btw, wouldnt exist if our uninformed attempts were sufficient for our hair care and styling process. i’ve always listed a specific group of stylists with a specific certification and knowledge base in my hair video descriptions so they wouldn’t be lumped in with everybody else.

    • @jasminet.4255

      @ have you ever considered that you are wrong. Yes all hair is technically made of the same things but black hair is different and should be treated as such 💕 it’s important to think for yourself and do your own research instead of regurgitating information from stylists who all have the same views

    It’s so okay to say my hair can’t do that… and continue the sentence. It wasn’t designed to and that’s okay. Allow it to do the beautiful and versatile variety of styles that it can do. Use textured extensions that match your hair type. These beauty standards created by a group of people who sole purpose was to destroy the way we identify with ourselves is damaging to the psyche and a trillion dollar business usually ran by the same people and others who hate us. And if not, the wide range of afro indigenous women who created their own weave business to make money off the same self hate stereotypes.
