You're volume is SOOOO low. Good vid otherwise though, take a like and a comment
Seconded. Good video, but my volume was max and I still struggled to hear.
Sorry about that! I am new to the editing side of things, and am getting the balance right! I think my next couple, I improved this! But ill make more care in the future! Thank for your help, and support of the content!
Good to know! Ill make those adjustments for the future, and thanks for your help!
No apologies necessary, i totally understand. Good luck in your TH-cam journey, keep doing dnd stuff, and ill keep watching :)
That was a good summary. Just my opinion, but the music was slightly louder than it should be since you are talking over it.
In the intro or throughout?
@@danielaleksiejczyk3933 I would say throughout as sometimes it distracted me and I had to consciously ignore it to listen to you instead. I do not think I have ADD or ADHD, but I can imagine it would be harder for them.
Understood and will adjust! I am new to the editing side of things, and am working out kinks as I go! Thanks for the feedback! It helps!
@@RiddleAndRule It is fine, that is what I had figured, and why I said something.
Great video! I play 4e and haven’t gotten round to any of the new systems yet; this has definitely piqued my interest in investing - looking forward to your other vids!
Hopefully I can keep improving the quality! haha but thank you! I really look forward to highlighting each monster!
Great video! I love the idea of the Aboleth as a mastermind 👍
Thanks! They are my favorite! So versatile, and can really impact a local civilization if they have enough time there.
1-I don't want to play with people I don' t trust but I also don't want to make it so easy for them to manipulate the game to their favor, better to avoid even allowing a temptation to develop. 2- Also worry a designated person would forget to remind everyone in the group of the calendar date/time/location, especially anyone they don't personally like.
What do you do if another player does this and it makes the game less fun? If it is an amount that doesn’t really feel like you should just leave, but it is still annoying.
I would: 1) Take it to the person one on one, with specific examples, and how it made the session less fun for you, hoping that it is a constructive conversation. And that resolves the issue. 2) If it is not resolved, I would then check in the with DM separately, and potentially other players to see if it is a larger problem for the table. If so, the group can then address it all together, inviting the player to adjust from hogging the spotlight, to collaborating more. 3) If its a small issue, it can be adjusted. If its a major issue, it might be a compatibility thing, and the personnel at the table needs to change. *Caveat all of this to say, sometimes players "hog the spotlight" because the game is moving too slow. Or they are just really excited about the game and have a lot of ideas on how to engage. I would also try to understand what they are trying to accomplish by participating way more than the other players at the table.
Or it’s another player has sucked out all the oxygen from the room, and this is an honest utterance. PS I have been that player and I have watched others be that player. But in the end someone has made it about them selves.
True but if you overuse this you become the ass that is trying to take the spotlight and not helping the group become better everything was in moderation
In tandem with the other 4 points I make in the full video, this definitely balances out!
This subject really needs more nuance that just that because while I 100% agree that players shouldn't just turn off when it isn't their turn the examples you gave here are the same examples that can be used for a player with main character syndrome because there really isn't a between turns in a lot of cases, when your turn ends I don't want to wait 5 minutes as you ask the DM questions or RPing with player 3 before I am allowed to take my turn as if you didn't want yours to end. Quite frankly that will make me want to check out of the game more.
Isn’t that what dnd is all about? Or is that not etiquette? I’m not sure cuz I don’t play it
Hey it's me, just on a different account. I agree with you too, and later in the video this is clipped from, talk about how the biggest mistake people make that kills fun is overplanning instead of making quick and fun decisions. Deliberating for 5 minutes doesn't make good memories and enjoyment for everyone.
I also speak against main character syndrome in the beginning of this full video, so I think the three parts put together speak to exactly what you are saying as well.
@yuno1781 That is part of why it requires a lot longer of a discussion on the idea. Engaging and caring about what others in the group are doing is one of the hearts of the game. But it can quickly turn sour when those actions stop being about engaging with everyone and turn into talking over someone and making the story and all its events about you. These are two sides of the same coin one being an ideal for D&D and the other being a horror story
D&D may be turn based in combat, but out of combat, this world was made for your character to be your character, not just a proxy for you to fight with. Go out there, let your character open a shop, let them reunite with a long lost friend, harass a local, start a tavern brawl. D&D is all about what you can do.
Hey! This guy is pretty cool! xD
I couldn't agree more, King!
This is one of the most of creative concepts I’ve ever seen! I’ll definitely be using it in my next games! One tip I had for your video, by the way, is that the intro was a bit too long - 3 seconds rather than 12 would have been fine.
Will adjust! Thank you! And thanks for the compliment!
I think you could actually eek a few more HP if you did human instead of dwarf and just took the Tough feat twice.
i started running this one last week, ive put a little too much thought into this and im overjoyed at the thought of being able to talk about it with someone else <3 1. the world is inspired heavily by bloodborne as well as lovecraftian horror. im using a rewritten setting, "steinhardts guide to the eldritch hunt" written by monkeydm. its a fantastic setting, that allows for so much customization and freedom with the world. its also very inspired by the game outer wilds 2. the players smuggle their way into the city of phane as party on an escort mission. they are offered a little bit extra gold to check out a dungeon, and they will be allowed to claim that dungeon as their home. they will realize, over the course of days or maybe weeks that they were tricked, they cannot leave the city, as they are trapped in a time loop. the world ends after 4 days, and the party is stuck in the time loop until they either die or figure out how to prevent the world from ending 3. one of the cool things im able to explore with a time loop and a smaller setting is that every single location can be interesting, at the right time. ever location in phane has its own environment that changes over the course of the 4 day time loop. my personal favorite, however, is the city of unlight. an entire city hidden away in the dark below phane, there are some ties to the eldritch creatures roaming around phane that can only be discovered in unlight. this one didnt come from the book, its my own creation :3 4. the entire campaign will take place in the one city, its a moderately grimdark city, run mostly by the church. there are some political figureheads and nobles, as well as a castle within the city, but the high apostles of the church hold the power in phane 5. the actual forces at play are also of my own creation. but the city is basically a playground for 9 eldritch creatures, called the spawn of rovagug. inspired loosely by the creatures of the same name from pathfinder lore. each of them has their own areas of influence (for example, kothogaz 'represents' death, halasan 'represents' sleep), and if the party can correctly identify an area of eldritch influence, as well as correctly name the forces it at play, they can ask the spawn of rovagug a question. this is one of the things im most excited to share with them, in addition to the time loop and all 6. i finished running my last campaign for the same players not all that long ago. and their characters went their separate ways at the end of the campaign. each of their characters will be showing up separately as npcs in this campaign. im very excited to name drop their old characters in this new setting 7. the name of the game is creatively designed challenges. one of the tricks about writing in a time loop is that theres no incentive to fight anything if it will just respawn, so ive came up with several creative workarounds to it. each encounter will have meaning, because there is no such thing as "fighting for the sake of fighting" if the party takes a fight, it is because there is no other option. but the time loop isnt perfect. things can be changed between cycles, either by otherworldly forces, or by sacrificing parts of themselves to ensure that what they just defeated never comes back. one of the things that will change between cycles is this creature that will slip into the cycle partway through, it will unleash a devastating attack on one of the districts, and if it is not defeated, it will completely remove one of the districts from existence on the following cycle (the district and the beast will return on the cycle after that). it creates an interesting risk/reward, because the beast is a very challenging encounter that adapts to them each time its defeated, but they might not need the district it assaults at all 8. the whole campaign is about mysteries. theyll need to discover why theyre in a time loop, what the end of the world means, who the 9 spawn of rovagug are, how to defeat them, who the various nefarious agents acting throughout phane are, how they can affect the world when almost everything gets reset every 4 days. the goal is to have it so every time they answer a mystery, 2 new show up in its place. im very excited to watch them discover the world 9. having a smaller space to work with makes it so much easier to have every little detail count. and the party living the same events over and over really gives a chance to solidify them. each time the party lives through the same event, they might notice something new, theyll be able to track an npc down by monitoring where they are on each day. most things will be predictable, all they need to do is put in the time to learn what. the world will feel alive because if i only have 4 days to work with, i can give each one my utmost attention 10. all this talk about a time loop and my players dont even know that theyre going to be in one. its been something that theyve expressed interest in before, but they dont know that its going to be a central mechanic for this one. im going to play the "end of the world" into an instant time loop off as a dream, but theyll figure out over time that theyre trapped in a loop. that realization is the single moment im most excited for
Duuuuude! A eldritch horror time loop? That sounds GREAT! And my imagination is running wild with the possibilities with the idea that they can "[sacrifice] parts of themselves to ensure that what they just defeated never comes back"! ESPECIALLY in the setting that you just described.
Absolutely agree with Bryce. This setting is phenomenal. Great interactions, opportunity for player choice, and theme. Well done!!
For ease of responding, do you think you could post the questions in the comments? Or maybe not for view time purposes?
Sure can! 1) What will inspire the main theme or concept of your world? 2) How will your players fit into the story? 3) What are the most exciting locations in your world? 4) What political or social structures will shape your world? 5) What unique creatures, items, or magic systems will you create? 6) Who are the most memorable NPCs in your world? 7) How will you design challenges that reward player creativity? 8) What mysteries will your players uncover? 9) How will you make your world feel immersive and alive? 10) What big moment in your campaign are you most excited for?
This is for a sequel to a short campaign that we never got to do: 1). I wanted to do a simple Orc vs. Colonials island hopper game in a tropical Archipelago (was really missing Hawaii and wanted to do a campaign there). The original short campaign kicked off by a massive dragon at the center of the archipelago dying. Since that dragon acted as a massive wall to keep the colony and the orcs separated, the different political powers scrambled to make political moves, lest war ignited. It turned into a rescue mission to save one tribe of orcs from being annihilated by another who had allied with darker powers. 2). One player is a 2nd born son of noble from the colony's motherland. His older sister died, so under the new pressure of being the heir, he panicked and took the first ship out of there. Took him to those islands where he'd spent his money and started work as a mercenary (a lover of his sister then got appointed governess years after he got there). Another was a firbolg whose island was destroyed by a volcano (the current king of the Grao Orcs inadvertantly caused that when he drew a demonic blade from the heart of that volcano). The last one was a teenage mutant ninja turtle, but a 4-month-mutant-wizard-beetle. He was along for the fun! 3). There is an island that is owned by "The Spinster Hag", a hag who tried removing a curse from an individual whom a god personally cursed, so she got turned into a horrifying drider/hag. There is also an eccentric mayor whose house is a living death trap which he uses to test mercenaries that he hires. 4). The Grao tribes are all governed individually by their chiefs in a loose confederacy held together by the Grao King who's only two functions are to keep the tribes from fighting and to lead the Grao in war. He instigated the above mentioned one orc tribe (Grao Lazzak) attacking another (Grao Nathal) to frame it on the colony so that he could be in full power with the intent to keep finding wars to fight from then on to stay in power. The surviving children from the Grao Nathal's chief are being protected by the colony and their caretaker is a curmudgeonly old soothsayer orc and a criminal pip-squeak half-orc thief who really would've rather been captured a a POW. 5). There are runes that an "ally" of the Grao King has that can set off volcanoes. The Grao King doesn't know this, but the PCs encountered this ally and the runes but never learned what they could do. Speaking of that ally... 6). The ally was once a weak follower of a god of death, destruction, and nature. This Ally got mortally wounded and prayed out of desperation to their god to spare their life so they could serve for longer. This was a blasphemy to this god, and sadly, it heard. So it cursed the ally to turn to spores every time they died, infect a pregnant woman somewhere else in the world, become that child, and within a week be reborn and regrown. As the centuries went on, this ally was driven mad by always tasting "the bitterness of death, but not the sweetness of finality". They became the Cursed Child of Creation (CCC), and sought their own permanent death above all else. After 2,000 years, they finally got reasonably powerful to the point that they were useful to the god, and it promised that if it turned the civilization of those islands to ash, they would release the CCC from their curse. They then formed a plan and allied themselves with the Grao King. 7). The plan to make a sort of war-time job board campaign for these PCs. Each job would have varying levels of success or failure and that would determine what was left to do! 8). Pretty much stated what I have had already... I guess I would have revealed a way for the players to break the curse held on the CCC if they discovered enough stuff about them. 9). Not really, but the Grao side of the islands was VERY Stone-Punk. Should think on that more... 10). I had an idea when facing off against the CCC that they would discover the PCs have a means to kill them permanently, and while they wanted to just let them PCs, the god who cursed them uses the CCC as a rag doll. So one of the main BBEGs of the campaign is openly weeping and begging the PCs to overpower them while they are attacking them like a marionette. If that moment never got to happen, I would have really loved to see how they foguth the Grao King (who I failed to say til now has an arm made of magma that he can cool or heat, in addition to a demonic volcano sword...) Great video! Very cathartic to get that out!!!
I love the lore! That is a really cool theme and I love how the core idea bled into so many aspects of the island, campaign, and environment!
@@RiddleAndRule Thanks! My favorite one-shot dungeon I ever made actually comes from that campaign.
@ OH! And I forgot to say that they Cursed Child of Creation was the final boss for the first segment of the campaign. The PCs had an overwhelming advantage against them (because they were a much lower level) and that allowed them to barely scrape out a victory. They then would have encountered them again and again under increasingly even odd.
this is a great setting! i can really feel the love you put into this!!
@@frysauce8653 thank you! :D
is that Molt from disc golf at this table?
Yes it is!
He plays with us on KingLeoDnD!
Pretty cool idea! I used to use the 4d6 drop the lowest for all stats in our games, but people would roll way too high or low, so we use standard array now to keep builds fair
That's exactly the problem I was trying to solve! I like the fun of rolling, but don't like the disparity between characters!
Love seeing that d12 gettin' some love.
Hahaha if I don't use it, I also would never get to use my duster to clean it off!
I rolled a 7 for their stats as the DM lolol
There actually is a pretty decent book on player roles. The Acquisitions Incorporated book has a chapter on player roles presented as character options and progression tracks. There's a role for the player who tracks the bag of holding. For the player who tracks the party questlog. For the player who tracks important NPCs. For the player who tracks the monsters they've defeated and what special tricks those monsters used. For the player who draws maps of everywhere the party goes. There are two roles for the players who manage and corral the other players. Each role grants tool proficiencies, some thematic robbon features, and usually gives the PC a minor magic item that gains more features as they level up.
Thats AMAZING! I did not know about that, and I love the in-game bonuses that reward the players based on the role they are taking! Wow!
if i had to choose elementlism or 1 element cantrip i would choose one element every time because I can use it more
The "IF I ASK YOU for clarity on a rule" I think is super important (as you pointed out). While I appreciate people helping keep me on track when I forget something, I hate people busting out a twenty paragraph blog to correct me on my ruling of how Detect Magic works.... as a non-specific example... Great thoughts as always!
Yes! A very delicate role, for the right person, and the right expectations! Haha
i usually call it "the noble art of herding cats" - you gently poke them, you prod, you try bribery, you try to convince them the place you want them to go is where they always wanted to go, to varying degrees of success
I love that! haha
awesome job! try lowering the music, we can barely hear you.
I'll often pick a song (or couple of songs) to listen to that remind me of my character.
Great info for a first session. Slow down just a bit so you’re not almost out of breath and turn the music down just a tad.
Thanks for the feedback! I will definitely implement this. I actually just increase the video speed because I talk a little slower for these, and think I did that a bit too much this time! I am very new to the recording and editing end of things here so thanks for the help!
@@RiddleAndRule I typically watch videos at 1.5x speed, so I'm used to speeding up anyone who seems to be talking slow. But lots of viewers will want a slower, more digestible style for the baseline speed.
Why the heck are you using only half of your available screen space for the actual video? Having that frame for the opening, to establish the brand, makes sense, but now you're well into the content and it's still there. I'm feeling a bit claustrophobic here. Remember that your viewers might well be watching your show on a tiny phone screen -- make use of as much screen space as you can.
Thanks for the feedback! I will definitely implement this. I am very new to the recording and editing end of things here so thanks for the help!
@@RiddleAndRule At least you're open to feedback! And the info you gave was pretty useful. This looks like it has the potential to be a good channel. I have come across so many websites that completely overlook basic screen space as a key element -- just the sheer amount of space that the user is interacting with. They'll use large banners, giant sidebars, inject ads right into the middle of the article, etc. The worst I've ever seen gave me roughly 1/9th of total screen space to be able to read the article I wanted -- on anything less than a giant PC monitor, that's unmanageable, and on a giant screen it'd still be irritating enough to drive away potential users. In a video, remember that you're likely getting watched on mobile screens of various sizes, possibly in vertical mode -- meaning a small chunk of an already small screen. You don't want to waste any possible space on that tiny viewport. However, having just your head talking, while fine at the beginning of your channel, isn't making the most use of the medium either. That same sort of framing could work to deliver bullet points as you're talking, for example. Might I suggest looking up the channel Counter Arguments for a good view on how to showcase bullet points using a standard sort of framing device? It becomes part of the channel's identity. Gambatte! (Japanese for "work hard / do your best" but used as we would use "good luck")
This is ok ,but broken far from it. Unfortunately i just don't see how it could keep up with other classes. Ranger to level 5 is very good but a basic twf ranger will be less MAD and doing more damage.
I ended up leaving a group because I felt like one of the other players didnt respect me. She constantly interupted me when it was my turn to speak. We also didnt agree that something I found incredibly important was important at all. I tried to compromise with her about it, but she didnt keep her word. I felt really betrayed. I later learned that she was bullying the group by trying to control us.
is the bgm from days bygone?
I left a game for which I didn't make an interesting enough character backstory for my DM, he told me it was plain and difficult to make hooks with, difficult to integrate into the campaign, supposedly. It didn't help that my party was more interested into meeting NPCs and trying to do their own things, like achieving their goals, which didn't lead to the cohesion and collaboration I expected from the campaign.
Most planes are made of material… like everything else
Okay, stop and sit with me for a moment this is the second short of yours I’m coming across and now I’m subscribing.I didn’t subscribe the first time and I’m gonna give you a list of things to improve to help with that problem in the future OK. First things first great opinions very interesting. You’re doing great on that front. This is the bad stuff. OK stay with me. I can hardly see your face. I’m being mostly hyperbolic, but it’s true. I can hardly hear you. We’re going to fix your mic generally so so far it’s just lighting and sound. I imagine you’re taking the short from another video which would explain the overlay in which case that’s fine. Otherwise fix your overlay I want to read it. I want to know what it’s from. Your opinions are valuable.
Hey! I really appreciate this. I am very new to the editing and visual side of this, and appreciate your willingness to share what you think would improve! Ill make those adjustments, but you are right, the full video, vs the reformatting for the shorts clips does make things a little awkward. Ill see what I can do!
@ Thank yourself the content is valid and interesting
Again only 6 minutes?
Thanks for the feedback! My goal with Riddle and Rule is to keep things simple and straightforward so Dungeon Masters can easily tackle big concepts without feeling overwhelmed. Rather than diving into every detail, I aim to give a clear starting point that DMs can adapt to their own style. If there’s a specific topic you’d like a deeper dive on, let me know-I’m always open to ideas!
@@RiddleAndRule Try a long video, 5-12 minutes looks bad in my opinion, especially when you choose very long topics and don’t cover them, your colleagues have a hard time shortening their videos to at least an hour, wish you luck
Thank you
Hope the full video is helpful too!
Added suggestion: Far realms. I've been interested in all that crazy stuff but there's just so little wherever I check and I need something _more_
On the list! I just recorded Material Plan, Feywild, and Shadowfell, but all three videos ended up with major audio issues... So I am behind schedule! But I'll be getting these out soon, and on to the Far Realms!
I need to know the song, it'd be awesome background music for an idyllic tavern
The songs in these videos are from Kevin MacLeod! Teller of Tales and Ascending the Vale!
4min for deep dive in cosmology? feels like fast views grab
Four minutes for the intro video of the Playlist! There will be one video dedicated to each plane of existence coming out over time.
Im a DM and i just wrote these down for my players. Im gonna find some way to implement these. Thanks so much
I love that! Hope they are helpful for your players!

They've also given us a couple of public prompts to answer about our character's backstories. Both have helped me flesh out my character quite a bit in ways I hadn't thought about before.
Thanks for sharing those ideas! I'm gonna pass them on to our group and see how everyone feels about incorporating them. We have one player who's said he's really struggling with his character so hopefully this will help
The character i want to play as lately is kain from legecy of kain and soul reaver. He'll work with them, as long as they dont try to betray him or question his actions. "I will not justify or explain my actions to anyone."
what is the picture you used for the thumbnail?
Just interesting artwork for a dnd character!
I found the video from the short! Ive watched all of these so far and I intend to continue to do so as they are uploaded. Instant sub!
Amazing! Glad it is helpful!! Please, let me know if there are any topics or questions you would like a video on! I will be recording more next week!
@RiddleAndRule Well I'm not exactly sure what the cause of this is, but I do have one thing that's been going on lately. We are playing a campaign with four party members, and there is one of us who is a bard. The bard subclass they have is combat focused, however they always do everything in their power to avoid a fight. We ended up in a fae trap, and our druid pulled a nice nature check that informed us that there was fairies here and they wanted to eat us. The portal back was locked until we kill all the fairies. Our bard did one attack and then tried to convince them to let us go a couple times, which failed of course because combat and disadvantage on persuasion checks during. Halfway through the fight, they had to leave for a bit and didn't make it back by the end of the session. During their absence we finished the fight, found a cockatrice egg, and got to our first major boss fight. This was by far the best combat scenario we've experienced the entire campaign so far, and it kinda got awkward when everybody realized that the bard being unconscious was contributing more by not trying to hire the bad guy to work in a restaurant. I'm not sure where the issue is here, I've tried going to Reddit and they just tell me to kill his character or kick him out or something but I'm convinced there's a better solution. He's also nearly impossible to have a serious conversation with, so really I just want to find a solution to this that doesn't result in him leaving
Is there a full video on this? I'd really like to watch that please
Saw your other comment! Glad you found it!!

thanks
Good tips, most annoying thing in my current campaign is this one guy who hasn't bothered to learn their character and doesn't plan ahead. Every time their turn comes up they hem and haw, look up abilities and talk them out to himself out loud. This would be forgivable except he does this every time and for the same abilities, and makes the same mistakes about spells every session. I know they are enjoying the game but it feels disrespectful to the rest of the group.
Yeah that's rough... really can break the momentum
Definitely worth a conversation! Sending videos like these, and even helping make a cheat sheet with the common abilities and options in front of him to help make quicker decisions might help!
First time finding your channel, I love it! 😄⚔️🔮❤️
