SkySafari: An app for all your Astro Needs!
A couple tips regarding the Neewer leveler: 1) Cinch the locking knobs tight to the larger adjusting knobs so they turn as a single unit. There's no need to lock the adjustment- I've never experienced any drift of the leveler. 2) The Neewer leveler knobs turn exactly 4 rotations from upper limit to lower limit. Place a visible mark on the edge of each knob at the 2-rotation point, facing outward. After every session, I return the leveler to a condition where all the adjusting knobs are positioned at 2 rotations, or the middle of their travel limit, so in the field I never have to fiddle with running up against a stop limit (or losing a threaded bolt). 3) Setup your Seestar and leveler with a quick-release ARCA plate, and never thread the telescope again. It's way easier to thread the leveler on the tripod, do a rough level of the tripod using the bubbles, then snap the S50 into the ARCA plate on the leveler and do fine adjusting. The ARCA plate works perfectly with the rotating section on the bottom of the Seestar and doesn't interfere with tracking or stability. I use the Neewer ARCA plates, which work great.
@@tech4991 I got lucky when I found that screw in the grass! 😂 I now get my tripod as close to 0 as possible, and I just make tiny adjustments with the leveling base. When I first got it, I was cranking on it something fierce!
Just use a little bit of loctite on the leveler.
@@josephtannenbaum8696 will that help the screw from backing out
Thanks. New user here and your presentation is excellent.
@@David12005 thanks! Hope you have a lot of fun with it and clear skies!
Thanks for all the brilliant tips. I also don't exceed 30mins per session, prefer to take multiple sessions and stack the RAWs in Siril, it works a treat, with minimal noise at the edges😊
@@ColleenVR thanks! I don’t like it when I push it just a little too far and then the edge noise becomes awful! 😂 Around 30 minutes does seem to be the “sweet spot”.
I would say this is the best video on polar aligning GTI using ASI AIR
@@TushitNag-yg7lm thanks! The all Sky polar alignment is a great feature on the ASIair!
I do not know if the sea star has something tracking the weather as my sea star has shut down by itself twice with over 70 % power left So a 3d dew shield may cause problems If this happens. I bought some black Mat cardboard And cut it on a guillotine to 3 inches wide and rolled it up And taped it on the outside to stop it from unravelling This has been brilliant for me and I feel if it goes into automatic shutdown again this would just crumple and fall out
@@pinkfloydvk I wonder why it is shutting down. Mine has never done that before. Is yours overheating or something?
Mine and I guess others per the app has stopped tracking correctly. It just almost keeps up but not quite. Causing star trails and frustrations. Hopefully they fix that soon.
@@kyleb.8378 sometime the updates are wonky. I’m currently having issues with the last update on my ASIair plus. Hoping they get all of the bugs sorted and release another update soon.
Do you use a filter on your seestar? I'm in a bortle 8-9 and purchased the optolong L-quad, and just so you know it fits perfectly in the end but don't push it past the chrome indention or it's a nightmare to get out. The seestar has the zwo duo band inside of it but the quad lets 4 bands of light through while filtering more unwanted light noise. I'm able to get some decent images with it in a major city. Nothing as cool as bortle 4 or less. I need to do a comparison between the duo and the quad see if it's worth it for the pink and blue colors lol
I ordered the 2 inch- optolong L-quad. In case someone wants to know which one fit in the end
Too much of everything else than the camera
@@bamsemh1 I’m going to do a more detailed video when the weather gets better.
You can have a machine shop turn a bar for your counter weight any length that you want from bar stock. It wouldn't take much to turn the threads to screw into the tracker and then drill and tap the other end for the stop.
@@huf67 I ended up lowering the profile of all the accessories on that scope, and the included counterweight at max distance is just enough. If I add another accessory, I may have to adjust it.
Not suggesting there isn't a backlash problem but its obvious to me that the whole tripod is wobbling when your jiggling the counter weight shaft
@@Asbo9365 it’s the table I set it on to get it high enough to film. There was backlash, but there is none there after the fix.
Great info AstroDanno! I just got my Seestar delivered
Nice video mate. What about the infinite focus hard stop. Does it affect the EAF? or do you need to remove it
@@lostsensemusic thanks! My copy of the lens goes slightly past infinity at full stop, so I haven’t had any issues with the EAF not being able to reach focus. It pretty much stays close to focus in the cradle.
good one, thanx for the lecture! will start read instructions.. and will test my gti tomorrow, fingers crossed!

Would you be able to link me to that Alstar mounting bracket you’re using to mount your Air on the CGEM? We have same equipment and I’ve been looking for something that works!
@@Star_Geezer amzn.to/4dPfi4n
@@Star_Geezer I believe that’s the one. It fits well because it is slightly curved.
So after its leveled and polar aligned then what? How do you make sure the object is centered in the telescope?
@@HorrorG. I use the ASIair with the GTi. I use the sky atlas in the Air, and go to a target. It will plate solve and show you where the telescope is pointed. If you are just using the mount, you can take an exposure and see if you can see the target, and frame it from there.
I have a very similar setup, but with an ASIAir Plus (lower profile). I mounted theASIAir on the dovetail so it was more bottom heavy on the scope side, and that did the trick for me.
@@RickySookermany I use a mounting bracket now that lowers the profile and added a Focuser. The single counterweight is enough to balance it now, but it’s tight at the limit.
Did you figure out why the home feature messed up?
@@damainsmith1084 yep! It’s because I was manually moving the mount. I now slew to a target on the western side of the meridian to the south. It goes through all the movements no problem, and then returns to home when polar alignment is done.
No back focus issues? I have a ASI 183MC pro I am attaching to a Rokinon 135mm. Just pop it on? Thanks for taking the time to make this video
@@michaelclancy7874 I’ve used the 533 and the 2600mc pro with this lens, and I’ve had no issues with back focus. I use the ZWO canon EF lens adapter, because my Rokinon fits Canon camera bodies.
You did say how to add equipment
@@justjerry1078 it’s under the observe tab. There’s a section called “my equipment”. You can add telescopes, lenses, barlows, reducers, and cameras in there and create multiple field of views.
Thank you very much. Mine was even a little worse. In my case, I didn't remove the sticker completely, I left it attached and still left me plenty of room to work. Your video is just a beautiful piece of information. Several key pieces of knowledge you provided: 1. you only need to tighten a screw 2. where the screw is located 3. how to access it 4. how to avoid voiding the warranty 5. what tool you need to do it Perfect
@@farribasz glad to help! I had to add some teflon tape and adjust mine one more time after I made this video, but it’s been doing well ever since. I always keep the clutches loose when moving the mount now.
@@AstroDanno The loose clutches idea is actually a good one. I'll do that as well. Thank you again
@@farribasz that will help it not return (hopefully!)
Just got my seestar , how do I save my image before shutting down, what button do I press.?
@@cindybaisley3301 you can go into the settings and save each photo for stacking in different software, but your final stacked image on the Seestar should save to your photos album. You can import that to your phone or tablet if it doesn’t do it automatically.
Thanks
Great video Danno. I just got my GTI. I've never had a GoTo before I'm looking forward to using it. I hope I can do it correctly. I'm mounting my Celestron 130 astromaster OTA to it. It weighs 7.5 lbs. So it's supposed to work. Then if I can see some deepsky objects I'll start purchasing guiding scope and computer for it, then a better scope for astrophotography.
@@tonyrobinson3744 awesome! Just check and make sure you can get it balanced if it’s a heavy scope. If you get a good polar alignment, it should track well enough without a guide scope. Good luck and clear skies!
Great and objective explanation. Thanks a lot.

Many thanks for taking the time to show a newbie like me how to stack individual frames to make an AVI to process my moon shots thru AutoStakkert4 then sharpen in Registax6. I am just starting out with a old Celestron C90 scope and for the first time I am happy with the end results. Like you said more frames make a huge difference.
@@FLHTdriver I’ve now(mostly) switched to video for lunar, solar, and planetary imaging to get the most frames I can and stack a small percentage of the best ones. If I’m using my dslr, I’ll still just manually take as many photos as I can. It makes a BIG difference!
Samyang and Rokinon are the same, for some reason different brand names are used in different areas of the world, here in the UK they use the Samyang brand name, in North America they go with Rokinon. I've heard that it can bea bit hit and miss with the quality control but I was lucky I guess because mine has been great. I usually shoot at f2.8 ,~ 3 which seems to give good results. I used to set mine up similar to you but ended up buying the Astro Dynion kit which I find superior, I use it with an EAF, ASI mini guider and an ASIair mini and a Star Adventurer GTi. When I first bought this lens I used it with the original Star Adventurer tracking mount and a Canon 600D ( think that's a Rebel 3ti or similar in the States) and that also gave good results. I agree that this is a good lens to get started in wide field astrophotography.
@@KevinRudd-w8s I’ve got mine ready for first light with the Astrodymium cradle, just waiting on a clear night so I can get the guide cam focused, and the Focuser all set up. I’m ready for Fall, cooler and longer nights!
You might get more life from the nylon tape is you use the plumber's technique. Before wrapping it like you do. They use narrow strips that they wrap down inside the teeth of the screw. Then they wrap the wider strip around the screw.
@@glennmitchell6696 yeah, I used way too much in the video. I was filming and doing it for the first time. I went back and used less and I haven’t had to fix it since. It’s been working great.
Hey how are you? I have a slightly stupid question: What should I do to make the tracker start rotating as soon as I mount the camera? Mine's LED is at 1x and nothing happens, it stays still. The battery is charged.
@@bmalacrida it’s rotating once you power it on. It’s moving VERY slow to track the stars once polar aligned. If you take a long exposure and there are star trails, you’ll need to check your polar alignment. If you’re sure it’s dialed in, and it’s not tracking properly, I had to fix a little band inside on the gear. IOptron sent me instructions and mine started working correctly after that.
@@AstroDanno Thanks! Since it's daytime, I left it connected with the ballhead and I'll leave it on for an hour or two and measure it using the bubble level. Another thing that I found strange, I left mine charging for 10 hours and it didn't reach the maximum charge level.
@@bmalacrida the last time I charged mine, it took a few hours. I leave it powered on while charging and I just watch for the light to start flashing rapidly.
@@AstroDanno the skyguider is working fine! I did the tests using the ballhead due to the bubble level, I used up its battery and charged it and the light flashed quickly as soon as it charged. Thanks!
@@bmalacrida awesome! Mine holds a charge for a long time. They put a good battery in there.
Getting one of these soon. I have a small 60mm refractor + flattener and a Canon R6. The Orion Nebula will be my great white whale later this year. He tasks me and I shall have him. The ASIAIR is on my wishlist. I want light and portable. I travel to dark sky sites and I don't want to break a sweat lugging around equipment. Get in and get out.
@@Mikedegot I think they did a redesign since the original batch. I think it now comes with 2 counterweights and they may have addressed the screw issue causing the backlash after it loosens. I’m still using mine, and it’s great for small setups!
I have a similar setup minus the focus cube. Trying to figure out where is the best place to position the dew heater, lens or dew shield. Waiting for some clear nights.
One thing about the Astrodymium ring system, the dew heater won’t fit on the lens. I have to wrap it around the lens hood as close as I can get it to the lens. Hoping that will still keep it from fogging up.
I have the same work very well
@@jeanclementstgelais3226 I’m still trying to get it all dialed in, but work is taking up all of my time lately.

Which kind of lens do you have?
Nice.
Thanks!
There's also a little dew shield for it too
I just picked one up a couple of weeks ago. It really helps a lot!
@5:36 I tried same thing. The nifty fifty needs power from the camera to focus. You can pull on the optical tube and force it to focus but that is hit or miss. I bought a 50mm 1.7 manual lens from Aiexpress to use on the astro-cam. I'll say it is ALMOST as good as the real nifty fifty.
I wasted a night trying to get it to work. I think I am going to do the same thing, and buy a manual 50mm lens for the dedicated cameras. What brand lens did you get?
why does my moon appear pink when i put my raw files into pipp?
Are your moon photos tracked? You can try bypassing PIPP unless you have to use it. I mostly used it to do batch conversions. I have not used it since I made this video, mostly just use Autostakkert now.
@@AstroDanno untracked
@@swistren it could be something in your output settings. You could check to see if there is a bayer matrix that needs to be checked or unchecked.
Rokinon for some strange reason rebranded their lenses to Samyang for the European market. So absolutely no difference between the two lenses
They look identical except for the branding, but the Samyang lenses can be found for a bit cheaper.
Очень хороший обзор. Спасибо!!!
Thanks! I had to translate this! The AM5 is now on sale as of today and a little cheaper than when I bought it. It’s a great mount!
When you are brand new like me and setting up don’t forget that you have to go into the app and turn on the polar scope, I’m assuming by default it’s turned off. VERY frustrating when you have no idea what you are doing
How does your FOV look through the polar scope? I’m wondering if they’ve fixed that issue as well.
Thanks my nerd I was having issues with finding out why I couldn’t polar align. Didn’t know I need to have declination at 90
The EQ6 is like that as well. I forgot a few times when I first got it! 😂
Thank you for your clear directions, using the ASIAIR PLUS!
Hope it helped!
Have you ever seen the HyperPod 135 mounting system for this lens?
I think I saw that on Etsy. It looks pretty good as well.
"A Treat" hahahah
Excellent tutorial for us beginners. Thank you.
Thank you, hope it helps!
Thank you this worked for me
Awesome! I really love Siril, and I was bummed anytime my images would fail to stack.
How long it takes that the solar quest is making his move to follow the sun after it is centered ? And is the image stable for visual use ( also a 3.2 kg telescope...) thanks for the tip.
Sometimes it has taken mine a couple of minutes to go to the sun at start up, other times it’s pretty quick to find it. If the mount is level, it should track the sun without much drift. I used it for visual as well as imaging. The payload limit is 11 lbs. my rig is about 6-7 lbs, and it works fine with that. 3.2 kg = 7 lbs.
NICE, I do have the SAMYANG, same thing, very sharp stars good color too and in my case round stars in all corners and all sides as well in center, I love this lens, also have the 85 mm f/1.4 and 10 mm f/2.8
