    I hope you get clear skies!!! - I myself will be heading to Texas to experience it. Can't wait. The experience in 2017 was incredible.

      Thanks! Hope it’s a beautiful clear day all along the path! I’ve been waiting for this since 2017, such an amazing experience!

    What area will you be recording the eclipse from,,. I will be in Tulsa Oklahoma 💥 Your channel is awesome 💯

      Thanks! I’m going to go wherever it’s clear. Hopefully, that’s everywhere that day. If it’s clear in Arkansas, I’ll find somewhere over there in the path. You’ll want to travel just past Fort Smith to get inside the path. It’s worth the drive!

    Great tips on those apps, having the cloud forecast on-hand is going to be clutch for the day or two before hand!

    I'm travelling from Ireland. I travelled for the 2017 one as well and had a perfect view from Cape Girardeau.
    A little advice - definitely leverage your intervalometer to the max and automate the whole thing. You don't want to be farting around with a camera during the eclipse.
    I got frankly awesome results last time with a Nikon D750 and a Tamron 600mm f/6.3 lens on a Vixen Polarie tracker. I followed a guide from Cloudy Nights and it worked perfectly.
    Basically, I set ISO 200 and bracketed exposure time with 1 stop intervals for 9 shots (+4 to -4 EV), centred on 1/250s. That got everything from the extended corona and stars all the way down to the chromosphere and tiny prominences, right at the limit of resolution of the system.
    I doubt the camera will allow you to do continuous bracketed shots (meaning it won't let you do one set after another continuously), and it takes time for the camera to save the images to the SD card. My workaround for this was to set the camera to continuous high speed shots, and then the intervalometer to 10s exposures with 1s intervals for 12 exposures. That let the camera clear the buffer for each round of bracketed shots and it meant all I had to do was take the solar filter off the camera at contact 2, and press go on the intervalometer. It worked away the whole time and I got to enjoy the eclipse with my family on the banks of the Mississippi 🙂
    The good thing is you can do a full scale test beforehand with your solar filter in place. There are excellent guides on determining the correct exposure based on the image you get with a filter in place, and then bracket from there (search for "demystifying solar eclipse photography" and the 4 part guide on cloudy nights by a chap called Gordon is just peerless).
    Anyway I'm blathering because I'm so excited to be going to see another eclipse. Here's hoping we get good weather!

      Nice! I just experimented with bracketing today for the first time. I set it to 1/3 stops and it took 3 rapid shots. You can set it up to take more than 3? The clouds rolled in today right after I set up, but I did get focused and finally tried bracketing. I am hoping to get a few more practice sessions in. I would love to automate it like that! I definitely don't want to be messing with my camera very much at all.
      I was right down the road from Cape in Sikeston, and we drove over to Illinois to see it. I'm really excited for this one, and I hope we get some beautiful blue skies on that day!
      I'll look for that thread on Cloudy Nights, and thanks for the info! Clear Skies over there in Ireland!

    • @HydrogenAlpha
      @HydrogenAlpha 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@AstroDanno Yup - on the Nikon it's dead easy to increase bracketing - hold the BRKT button and roll the command dial for the number of shots (3,5,7,9) and roll the subcommand dial to select the exposure steps. Your Canon looks pretty impressive so I'd be stunned if it can't do 9 too.
      My biggest worry (apart from weather) is focus. I suspect I was incredibly lucky last time by focussing during the partial phases with the solar filter and it turned out perfect.
      The TSA in Dublin airport is going to think I'm paparazzi with the amount of photographic crap I'm going to have in my carry on 🙂

      @AstroDanno  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@HydrogenAlpha I tried focusing on a small sunspot today and it was pretty tough at my focal length, even with 10x zoom. That’s gonna be the hardest part… I hope! 😂
      I’m reading that thread, and I’m going to mess with my camera settings some more. I could only get 3 exposures earlier today. I need to dig a little deeper. I’ve had the TSA open my camera bag and give me funny looks plenty of times. 😂

    thanks for all the info and the apps you use those will help for sure. I was wondering will you be going over any settings your gonna use for the seestar s50? Have you tried the 30sec stacking? love your videos Dan!

    • @AstroDanno
      @AstroDanno  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! I have not tried a time lapse yet with the Seestar. I set my main rig up today for my first practice session, but the high clouds rolled in. I’ll be doing a test run with the Seestar on the next clear day we have(hopefully it’s clear on a weekend between now and the eclipse). I tried 20 seconds with the Seestar, but it was tossing a lot of images due to star trails. I’ve mostly been using the default 10 seconds. I’ve still got a few more things I want to try with the Seestar before I do a full review. Oh, they just updated the Seestar firmware, and I think they made some adjustment options in solar mode available. I’ll update it and try those out as soon as I can.

    I'm poor and broke, but still have a small digital camera and filter. I also have a filter for my phone. I'm going to do my best, but I'm going to focus more on actually watching the total instead of screwing around with too much equipment. That's the problem too many people do these days is not live for the moment and instead stare at it through a screen only to never look at it again. Going to get that app and do my best. Good luck to all with their captures and fingers crossed the stupid clouds will behave!

      That’s all I had back in 2017 was that Canon Powershot. I think it did a great job, much better than my phone could have. I’m hoping we have some clear blue skies on that day, but it is in April, and it could very well be a crapshoot. I’m hoping I can get to a clear spot near the center line and take in those wonderful super rare 4 minutes of awesomeness!

I got my little filter for my cell phone and I'll probably use my digital 35mm for totality shots. Any tips on settings for an Android cell phone? @@tracyblackfox152 I’m headed to north central Arkansas as well. Hoping I can find a clear spot tomorrow. I will check the weather tomorrow morning and will drive to a better chance for clear skies if need be. I don’t have an android phone, but I will probably use my iPhone to record a video of the landscape, and maybe our reaction to the eclipse(hopefully clear!) you could probably use your phone like that, or maybe try zooming in with it during totality. I think your digital camera will do great. I might take mine as well. Good luck and clear skies!
