I'm an electronics tech who first started in electronic musical instrument repair back in 1987 but was never able to make any money at it. So here I am on TH-cam trying to teach myself to repair the stuff I always really wanted to work on - audio gear.
Seekone SDL-996S and Aoyue Int701A++ Solder Station Evaluation
My cheap solder station decided to burn out the ceramic iron element in the middle of a job a while back. Since I had already been planning replacement within the next six months, I decided that rather than attempt to fix the old one I would just move up my plans.
This did not go smoothly - the retailer initially sent the wrong Aoyue station. So I bought another as backup, the Seekone from Amazon. Eventually the right Aoyue showed up so we're going to take a look at both of them and see what they're like.
I also bought the hot tweezer iron for the Aoyue station, so we'll check that out too.

Denon DR-M3 Record Amp Diagnosis | Pioneer CT-F615 Meter Fix
มุมมอง 94514 วันที่ผ่านมา
In today's video, we'll do an update on the Denon DR-M3 to see if we can find the problem with the recording amplifier and then fix the not working right channel level meter in the Pioneer CT-F615. Neither one of these decks has enough wrong anymore to do a full video on each, so I'm combining them into one video. Facebook: theweatherwolf Insta: oklawolf Take a look ...

It's official... I'm out of my mind. But since I can't seem to stop buying old cassette decks anyway, let's see what's wrong with 7 of my latest bad financial decisions. JVC Victor DD-99 Wow and Flutter - How Good is It Really?
มุมมอง 862หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the third and final video planned for this flagship beast from 1982. JVC's direct drive transport in this line of units was renowned as some of the best performing ever made for wow and flutter, and I would like to see how this example matches up with my previous W&F champ, the Technics RS-B755. In order to determine this, we need to record a new 3kHz tape using a brand new Maxell UD1 3...

In the last video, this irritating triple direct drive cassette deck decided it wanted to fight and was not about to cooperate with me about anything. Let's see if I can even do it right. Many thanks to @asbcustom for...

I'm in the mood to bring some sweet Pioneer goodness back to the channel, so we're going to get into the CT-F615 today to hopefully get it back to working order. Sears Silverstone Console Stereo - Recap and New Speakers
This is a super rare treat. I've never seen this first gen Infinity radio EVER. I'm a huge Chrysler fan of the 1980's and this video taught me things that i never knew in regards to the availablity of which model had this radio. I've seen a ton of 1987 Chrysler New Yorkers in my time and i've never once ever seen this radio in any of those cars. You mentioned that it was also availabe in the Laser and Lebaron but NOT in silver face, is that correct? I might have seen a black face unit maybe. But definately NOT a silver face unit.
I understand why you wanted to fix this reveiver, these Onkyo's are great and I do love them, but why spend so much time and money on something that is worthless? I have three of these Onkyo's, two TX-SR608's and one TX-SR607. One of the 608's has been my main home cinema amp for 15 years and i love it, it still works perfectly. The other 608 has the infamous 'no sound' issue, the result of a failed DSP chip, I am keeping it for spares only. The TX-SR607 came to me as an ebay purchase (very cheap) with a failed display. This was fixed with a 2.2 ohm resistor that had gone open circuit and it is now my AV amp in our living room, working perfectly.
5:49 Have you ever thought that it might be your cassette that is not properly calibrated and not the Roth one?
There was a print on the circuit board KDAD852? Found some "KADA 852" which seems identical. I've used a "BAKON" (Chinesium) Soldering Station for a long time until the heater element broke :D Not it's my backup station too :D My new main unit was way more expensiv but it's a ERSA (Made in Germany) branded soldering station and it's working great so far.
I wonder why you didn't clean the sprocket plus the belt pulley. There was a lot of old black grease there and on the teeth. The parts were dismantled and you added fresh grease. To me, it's strange. Nevertheless, you're doing a good job.
Excelente trabalho 👏👏
Thank you. Just found the idler tyre. I need one. Also need a new pinch roller if you can help
Yeah... those old devices... more and more plastic stuff just breaks or are broken. Thants nice that you find replacements in the end - i think you will get it working again. Thanks for sharing service procedures! Cheers mate!
I actually got the gears two days ago - they sent them by courier to get around the strike. Will do another video in January to see how they work out.
what about the teac v770? how much more work does that one need to be fully operational? same about this one, i nearly brought one of these decks, kinda glad i didnt now after seeing this
It needed nothing more so it's been donated to the charity thrift store. Should be off making a new owner happy now.
Losing your ear training sucks. It was one of those things that my university profs continually warned us about. Also, ears age. When I left school I could “hear” 15hz to 20khz (I quote hear because 15hz is more of a feeling than a sound) and now I’m down to 15hz-17Khz less than 20 years later.
Traffic is insane in NY, Long Island is basically at a complete standstill worst I’ve ever seen in 67 years - The best thing you can do is electronic projects inside 👍
I've never been there but my folks have - I think driving in NYC would be about the last thing I'd ever want to do. Except maybe driving in Boston.
I have to agree with the other viewers that the purchase of a 3-D Printer would allow for a better work flow and a reduction in your stress levels. I am learning that there's not a decent auto-reverse cassette deck unless you go with the Akai deck that physically flipped the tape over or (a brief shudder) a Nakamichi. Do enjoy December and relax so you can prepare for a New Year. Thanks for the videos!
I like your videos you do! You might be interested to know that Technics double decks from the early 90’s as well as some Denon models have plastic gears which crack also. You’re better off avoiding the auto reverse models that use flip heads (some earlier units have a fixed head system). Keep up the great work!
Jesus Christ, Do you have anything that works!
This one's been working fine since I fixed it - just took a lot to get it there. It's a good example of why not to pay a lot for old tech.
Well done to get so far..
yep! that's Y I didn't buy an autoreverse one
You can just 3D print it, it is not a precise gear from what it looks like..
AWIA made some alright stuff, but some of it was complicated
I really enjoyed both parts. I once worked on a unit with this mechanism. It's long gone but I wish I had this video (and Probnot's) as a guide four/five years ago. Even those two men struggled and they're very experienced with electronics. I have a 1986 Samsung and it has a much simpler mechanism...whose idea was this? How did they think this was an improvement? By 1990, they came up with a much simpler direct drive loading mechanism that is much more reliable.
Hello, is there any way to contact you? My father has an old sony stereo casate deck model number TC-K71 that has sound quality issues, possibly due to motor issues. I am wondering if you could help us fixing this. Thank you
thank you very much . Fixed my problem 🙏
Witaj. Czy te kasety kupione z eBay? Czy spełniają oczekawiania?
They were from eBay, and seem to be good quality. I use them all the time.
@Oklawolf Thank You👍
As always very interesting video! Thanks for sharing! Cheers mate!😊
I didn't look at the scheme in detail, only here in the video. Those two transistors act as mute transistors to me. If one has changed it’s parameters, it should be easy to detect with a transistor tester.
Where do you get parts for old tape decs like your Denon? I have a dr -m1? It needs some parts like pinch roller and some other parts. Rewind is painful . My Internet serches haven't come up with much.
It depends what parts they need. Digikey and Mouser for the electronics parts (unless they don't have them), Fix Your Audio for some belts and pinch rollers, other stuff on a case by case basis.
Really enjoy your videos - I’m a fairly new subscriber who also has anxiety issues :) It’s hard to ever find a comfort zone, but your videos do indeed help. I’m trying to fix an old Pioneer PL-600 belt driven turntable - So far the motor seems dead and the power supply was only giving me 2.6 volts - If can find parts on EBay I’ll give it a shot, probably not worth the effort, but I’m on a mission to make it work - Guess the OCD doesn’t help :)
Had a mint one gave to me today! I'm still blushing! I'm new to this hobby. Is there a specific turntable, speakers, etc., that goes best with it?
I like the JVC super ANRS decks.
hello watched your videos, very informative, can i ask a ? i own a NAKAMICHI BX-125E, wont play/ff or rw, the tape mec dose not even rise, any ideas, kind regards mike
Control motor is the most likely cause. Give it a tap while trying to operate the deck and see if it starts working again. It's the same one as in this video. Permanent fix is the same as well.
Real sifu t.q info..
I once bought this one new, but after a short time I had a problem with huge noise on the left channel. I never found the problem, I renewed all the transistors and capacitors, but that noise remained. I donated it to someone, but he couldn't fix it either. Was a strange problem. And I still wish you a happy birthday, another year wiser 😁
funny thing is .. I thourge I can smell it from my Pc screen, vintage electronic component most of it is Japan (actually Japan made) back in 70s are quite unique.
Reminds me of an old Ferguson 3272 I had - excellent quality deck.
late Happy Birthday!
Nice video! Sadly these Sony single motor units are pretty must past it these days. Had the TC 570 3 head version back in 1992/93 and couldn’t get any parts for it then! Best not to pump any money into this, keep it or sell it off for parts and get a decent 3 motor Akai or a later Sony model. Technics made some good ones too,but be prepared to change 50 leaky caps if not already done. Really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work!
Build quality of these Japanese machines is astounding !
niceSir so you must replace all the capacitors and check de transistors HFE...
Have u tried Anusol?
Recommended by Sony was graphite lithium grease for the roller and ball bearings on the playback mechanism.
I think there was pulverized mica in the original grease Sony used on the head block assembly.
Stumbled upon your videos and been watching daily, very enjoyable 👍
