I'm an electronics tech who first started in electronic musical instrument repair back in 1987 but was never able to make any money at it. So here I am on TH-cam trying to teach myself to repair the stuff I always really wanted to work on - audio gear.
JVC Victor DD-99 Wow and Flutter - How Good is It Really?
This is the third and final video planned for this flagship beast from 1982. JVC's direct drive transport in this line of units was renowned as some of the best performing ever made for wow and flutter, and I would like to see how this example matches up with my previous W&F champ, the Technics RS-B755.
In order to determine this, we need to record a new 3kHz tape using a brand new Maxell UD1 30 on the DD-99 and gather data from several of my best decks. We'll be using the Sony TC-K666ES, JVC TD-V931, A&D GX-Z9100, Technics RS-B755, and Denon DR-M3.
And thanks to the Nak T-100 software, we should additionally be able to tell which of these six decks need further work, and find clues as to what could be wrong with them. I guarantee there will be one or two that still want to fight me.

In the last video, this irritating triple direct drive cassette deck decided it wanted to fight and was not about to cooperate with me about anything. Let's see if I can even do it right. Many thanks to @asbcustom for...

JVC Victor DD-99 Part 1 - Transport Service Nightmare

Today, I'm starting on another JVC flagship cassette deck, my DD-99. This one is a 100V model from Japan I got crazy cheap because it had physical damage that scared everybody sane away. In part 1 we will be doing a full transport service to what is never going to be called an easy deck to service. So it's a long one. JVC Victor XU-D400 Mk II Revisited - Can I Get the MD Drive Working?

I'm giving this roached out MD combo deck one last chance to remain among the living. In the last video, I recapped most of the MD deck trying to get it working again, only to find that the spindle motor was completely dead. I'm in the mood to bring some sweet Pioneer goodness back to the channel, so we're going to get into the CT-F615 today to hopefully get it back to working order. This is the same deck as the CT-400, so anything in this video applies to that model as well. The last time we saw this deck, the belts were gone (of course) and the capstan motor wouldn't run. Shouldn't be too hard to get this working...

Why didn't you use the 0.1% meter range seeing as you are getting readings of 0.03 w&f ??
Not used to the software yet.
Wow! 😵That dd-99 is awesome!! I didn't know wow and flutter / speed accuracy from a cassette deck could EVER be that good! Especially when you consider that the cassette shells themselves can introduce variations. Impressive! I guess that's down to the amazing tech who restored it. Well done.
It's absolutely nuts how good it is considering it still needs new slip clutch felt. Hoping to fix the DD-7 in January sometime so I can get all three JVCs across the line.
I still think that TD-V931 is an absolute work of art. I know you'll get her dialed in. 🙂
That's why I want to do the DD-7 in January - it's driving me crazy to have my best deck decorating a shelf instead of making tapes.
@@Oklawolf I look forward to seeing the slip clutch repair. I am confident that you can restore these JVCs to 100% working order again. (maybe even a little better)
i like your videos. Your passion of fixing cassette decks is amassing. i asking for little help with Pioneer CT-W801R. Belts are gone. any advice where to found replacement belts.
WJOE has a belt kit for that model - about the best suggestion I have right now. I've never dealt with that model.
Excellent presentation, sir. I had a partial restoration done on a JVC DD-7 deck. The technician was floored by the low wow & flutter exhibited by this deck. I love how silky smooth it plays back after cleaning up the signal with Audacity and recording it on the DD-7. Those direct coupled amps are great !
Awful nice of u to fix grar to the best of your ability and give them away. I wish I was local I wpukd glad accept these ❤ Keep at it & many well wishes. I go my 1st decent drck yesterday, Sony dual well TCW E475. I know its not high grade audiophile gear but I loce it for what it is. Your channel was a *huge* inspiration to revisit the format❤
I recently bought my first Nakamichi, a BX-300 (3 head), and am super impressed with it. After several days playing and recording, I have noticed a short slip when pressing rewind, about 1/2 to a second. Then it works fine. I suspect the idler tire needs replacing. I removed the cassette plate and used Rubber Renue and it helped. Much less slips now. Still I went ahead and ordered a set of replacement belts and tire. Hopefully that will resolve the slip problem. In case you are wondering, I paid $330, Fedex shipping included! Coming from Houston to Dallas, it arrived overnight! My other favorite 3 head deck is my Kenwood KX-1100HX. Until I can buy a better Nakamichi, I plan to continue using the Kenwood KX-1100HX to record, as the KX-1100HX has individual Bias/level calibration for the left and right channels. Will now use the BX-300 for Playback. The combination sounds amazing. And yes, the BX-300 has a Bias Tune knob, but Nakamichi suggests using your ears, no meter calibration assistance. One could connect the deck to a PC, I then use the NAK-T100 app to do a FR sweep and have a visual representation of the bias tune adjustment. No changes on a metal TDK MA90 but on a type II TDK SA90 the bias tune knob needs to be set at 9 o’clock position.
I stopped after four decks. That's my limit, so I made sure they were good ones to make the necessary overhauls worthwhile, which meant avoiding anything with capstan belts. (Russell Industries/PRB apparently don't have an online store and I generally don't order things any other way) I started changing over 🐧when Windows 8 hit the fan. Steam dropping support/updates for Win 7 pushed the rest of the machines over. Occasionally I look back and I still have a VM for XP. For some reason WFGUI doesn't get along with Wine...starts and then immediately exits. Skyrim, Unreal Tournament and other assorted older applications will run all day. 🤷 I only use Windows 10 at work when necessary and I go wash my hands immediately afterwards. IT had to email blast everyone not to let 11 install itself and break everything.
i have the chance to buy a tck666es would you recommend it?
It’s a good deck but not the easiest to service. I’m still not sure this one is completely done fighting me. Not sure I would recommend one to anybody inexperienced in working on their own decks, unless you have the work done for you.
Do you happen to know where to find a repair manual or PDF for one of these? i recently bought one and need to put the tuning cord back on
Sorry, I’ve never found one for anything from Silver.
@ mine is the Pulser, but i'm guessing it's the same with that
Thanks so much for this video! I should be receiving this very model tomorrow, and hopefully will just need to clean it up and install new belts.
Good news! It plays with the original motor. Bad news - the speed is all over the place, but generally slow. What did you end up choosing for your long term permanent replacement? I know it has to be 2400 RPM, 12v DC, CCW...
Hi, will u donate to anyone here on YT? I won't mind paying for shipping❤😊
Good work, I'm starting to appreciate how some of these tape decks can be so tough to work on. Fairly recent subscriber here. I used to service professional video equipement back in the 90's - betacam, u-matic etc
Sorry to hear you had such a rough week. Thanks for the kind words, We think you're awesome as well! I wanted to tell you something for a while now. Those Chinese made Mabuchi clones have absolutely NO lubrication in them whatsoever!! If you pry the back bearing off and put a drop of oil in the little pot between the brushes, you'll see a significant improvement in speed stability. (VWestlife made this claim in a video and he was absolutely right.) I tried it, it works. Keep the videos coming but don't stress yourself out too much. Take care of yourself.
the open/close button works only as a stop button (does not open the door), when the door is in the open position and when pushed, the motor should pull in the cassette, but nothing happens, when the door is also in the open position and when Play is pressed the button should close the door, but nothing happens, there is no voltage on the poles of the electric motor when the open/close button is pressed
Ok, so the button switch is working. Check for connector and/or wire issues to the eject assembly first. If no problems found, IC904 controls the eject motor - there should be voltage across C916 when the eject is operated. If it's not there I would suspect something to do with IC904. Either not receiving the signal to cycle the motor, voltages not present, or maybe the IC itself is fried.
@@Oklawolf Thank you
How Old is this one? I have the same and it still works:) but i cant remember the year :(
These date from 1993, I think.
Nice work mate! And finally you got that T100 software - it is very useful and you will love it :) Cheers!
9:24 love that you're giving people these decks! So generous of you
its amazing to see the packaging that sony's repair parts come in! not a sight we see often.
Dobar posao 👌
I wish you lived around here (California central coast) so I could pick these decks up at the thrift store here!
Good job, man. Thank you for sharing this video. Does somebody know a reason for the tape guide is being spot-welded on the left side of the Rec/Playback head unit (near to the erase head, see 36:34 )? I saw this arrangement on some SONY decks, too. I think it is inferior to the standard configuration, at least in the terms of stability of azimuth. This way the tape could be astray due to the inhomogeneity of the pinch roller. In other words, the tape path in the vicinity of the PB head is not so well-defined.
nice work, i just serviced my v770. i look forward to seeing how good yours sounds.
Aww thanks for kind compliments & you're very welcome. I'm happy with your channel & its videos and information. Greetings from Trinidad😊
About the wow and flutter - due to lack of familiarity with the new software the W&F measurement method I used wasn't correct. I used quasi-peak when I wanted WRMS. When I did measure WRMS on this deck several days after editing, I got 0.07%. So this deck is performing roughly on par with my Nakamichi BX-150.
Nice. What is WRMS? I know RMS is Root Mean Square. Is the W for Wow?
It stands for Weighted Root Mean Square, where the calculations are done with human hearing taken into account.
@Oklawolf aaahh great! Got it thank u kindly. Also many thanks for wonderful videos, content and educating us. Waiting on a JVC KD A5 (pardon me if I got the model wrong). Recent service and has a couple things needed to be done (the record LED is out) and a couple adjustments here and there.
Man if I ckose to u, I wpuld so give u some gd business. Thanks for cobtrnt rich videos. Warm greetings from Trinidad❤😊
Very informative video for those who will have to do tape transport electrical alignment. I remember i have done that one too for my k666es, damn that took some time... Cheers mate!
Heat shrink gets too slippery to mimic a rubber part. After heating, roughen the surface with sandpaper and then treat it with either 'Rubber Renue' or another aggressive rubber cleaner. This will give it grip.
Hi, Instead of using a dremel tool which even at it slowest spins fast, why not use a drill motor ? or put the dremel on a variac . Thanks for the video series
Hay i have a ht r 560 and it does the same can you help me go through it
Ps what does the 2 prong connectors that run in the row on the pre Amp section
Apologies if I missed it, but did you check the wow and flutter figure? It should be 0.025%. I presume that means 0.05% for combined record and playback.
It's not in the video but I did check it. I'm waiting for the next wow and flutter video for that, which should be pretty soon now. I have enough new decks serviced that I want to see if the RS-B755 is still the best one I have for making 3kHz tapes. I also got new software I'm trying to get used to. The deck should do the same number for both recording and playback - it's not additive.
From the bottom of my heart I thank you for sharing these visions of majesty, they must be shared on into the future. I still must wonder about the economic efficiency of trucks over rail transport of grain?
Had burned out left chanell, i managed to repair it amp is working, but its geting like realy hot, is it posible to mod it to have went inside? where could i pull out 12 v for vent?
Hi! Where can i find that alignment gauge?
I got mine from Willy Hermann, who was moving away from selling them at the time. I'm not sure he has any left.
@@Oklawolf Me: you can ask Hermann for more alignment gauges You: **What a great idea! Why did I not think of that?**
What’s the playlist of the japan maxell xl2 tape ? Cheers !
I bought a European 4700 in 1994 and it always worked great (and by the way it even worked when I plugged it into a 120V socket, before I had a step-up transformer). But whenever I would do a forward or backward picture search on a tape recorded in LP, the color would go away. I always thought it was normal but weird. Now I wonder if it's that capacitor you pointed out next to the head drum motor...
It might be cursed by its model number ;-) Regarding your brakes, I used heat shrink also on one of my own, not the glued type, but it's not skipped a beat so far, so it's probably okay. Since then, I found some small fuel hose at my chainsaw store, I know you have one or two of those up there. It's kind-of a yellowish-green transparent color, very flexible like urethane, and will probably last several lifetimes. Nice work sticking with it and getting it done!
Thanks again for the lamps! I ordered some latex surgical tubing as a more permanent solution for the brakes. The heatshrink doesn't stop the reels well enough and it tends to really yank hard on the tape when it reaches the end in rewind and fast forward.
Thank's Your video i learn english!
it's a sony
Isn't 666 ...the devil's number?
It's a very appropriate number for this deck.
I am restoring a JVC TD504. I am grateful for its simpler design, mechanicals & big flywheels. I COULD NEVER HANDLE the tuff ones like you. ❤
My advice, Don't buy ever complicate Audio Decks. The '70 decks are the most simple and stronger.❤
I wonder how the direct drive (magnetic) reels would affect the tape recordings over time as they are in pretty close proximity to the cassettes. Would Sony have used MU metal to shield the reels from the cassette compartment?
I'm not sure the magnetic field would be close or strong enough to matter - maybe the cover plate in this deck has been engineered to help with that.
I can not believe the complexity of this tape deck. More impressive is your knowledge. Nice work.
