STOP Watercolour Paper From Buckling When Wet
มุมมอง 2.1K28 วันที่ผ่านมา
In today's lesson I talk about a few ways to stop watercolour paper from cockling, or buckling, I'll also paint an atmospheric sky with boats and reflections. Cockling of the paper can be annoying for beginners, but there are ways around it. Stretching the paper is a traditional method, and is great for larger sheets, but can be frustrating, especially if you want to paint straight away. For me...

Thank you so much. Your tutorials are wonderful. I painted it with nice results (not as good as yours obviously). I learned a great deal from you.

You can add some colour to it. I explain more in the full length video
@@ChrisStephenArt 👍
I centre believe this only had 16 comments. A really emotive painting. Big sky for sure. The tiny boats really help to scale it up. Great to see a fellow lefties set up his palette on the left.
Thanks very much, glad you liked the video
Beatiful❤❤
Thank you 😊
Magical work!
Thanks Carol
Would you have to seal this painting before framing it? Looks fantastic!!!
Thanks Ralph. There is no need to use any fixative on watercolour or ink paintings. Just frame behind glass.
@@ChrisStephenArt will the ink run again if it gets wet?
I always use Indian ink, or acrylic ink, they’re both waterproof when dry. Obviously, watercolour can be damaged if it gets wet, that’s why it should be framed behind glass.
I’ve bought Jack Marriott’s book. It’s excelled for a self taught artist and helped by your TH-cam paintings. Thank you so much much.
Yes, it’s a fantastic book !!
Stunning
Thank you
How do you prevent the ink from running through the paint. Probably permanent ink you use? Thank you
I use either Indian or acrylic ink for this type of painting. Both are fully waterproof when dry.
You’ve taken us straight to Norfolk. Very inspiring painting. Thank you .
Thanks so much, Norfolk is one of my favourite places to paint. Glad you liked it
Brilliant!
Thanks Brenda !!
Very interesting techniques. Thanks for sharing. Would be ultra nice to have some narration.
Thank you, Christina. Here is a link to a similar painting video I did, it has narration th-cam.com/video/dknzlDzvSIo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wfOyegjWZMOfHHFS
Duh, just pick up the brush?
Wow, I’m impressed. You’re a natural !!
Unneeded comment
I love your approach ….keeping it simple…..not using too many colours…..you are a great influence in my watercolour journey thank you
Thank you Linda, I’m honoured to be a part of your journey. Thank you so much for watching !!
The white spots (paper) could take on a light green color with a white sheen, like very young leaves bathed in sunlight.
Thank you
I never clean out my palette as I usually end up mixing similar colours again. I know some artists say it make the colours muddy but I've never known that to be the case and I like a slightly muted palette anyway. If I need more colours than the paint tin lid will accommodate, I bring in a round palette with bigger wells - and I let that dry unwashed afterwards too. I guess everyone has their own way of working but it was refreshing to see you make the point in this video.
You’re absolutely right, Carol. As a landscape painter, a muted colour palette is largely beneficial. I only occasionally clean a small area of my palette if I need some pure pigment.
It always bothers me to waste that leftover paint. I think I need to use that bigger palette I've been salving though. Your explanation while using the paint was so helpful to me. Thank you. It's a lovely painting with the subdued colors!
Thanks Rita. There’s never really any need to waste any paint, just add to the leftovers for the next painting. I only occasionally clean a small area if I need some bright colour.
Thanks so much. I find this so relaxing to do between my wildlife paintings that are realistic and detailed.
Thanks so much. Yes, it is nice to have a relaxing change occasionally
Beautiful work. Leaving those lovely brushes in water makes me anxious.
Thanks Adrienne. The brushes are fine to be left in water for a short time. As soon as I’m finished painting, I clean them and lay them flat to dry.
I love the idea of not wasting the leftover paint in your pallet! ❤
Thanks Connie, the leftover paint also makes perfect mixes.
Another so helpful painting . Many thanks.
Thanks Brenda 😊
You’re so talented… you make it look easy … you don’t seem to have an off putting ego..!! Inspiring
Thank you, John. That’s very kind of you to say
I've seen you and some other artists do this. I think I need a different pallete - mine has only small sections, which makes mixing all the leftovers difficult
A larger palette is definitely beneficial, especially for home or studio use
Beautifully, thanks
Thanks, Kelly
Fantastic....
Thank you, Ralph
Omg wow would never had thiught to mix infian ink and watercolour-spectacular!
Thanks Daniela. They are a perfect match !!
Reallylove this!!

You’re welcome! Thank you so much for watching
Great painting! Love your style😊
Thank you, Helen. 😊
First time watching. Love the sky. A very restful picture. Will really have to give this one a try
Thanks Mary, glad you liked it
Hi again Chris, as a new painter just wondering if you have ever visited Queensland Australia, in the middle of summer. I was thinking the colours would possibly be a little different. I would enjoy your opinion.
I haven’t been to Australia, although I would love to visit !! From images I’ve seen, it looks like there would be less green, but I probably wouldn’t have any need to change anything on my palette. I’m a fan of Herman Pekel, I think he’s from Melbourne, but when I think of modern Australian landscapes, I think of his work.
@@ChrisStephenArt wow thank you so much for responding. We do have a unique colour scheme here and Melbourne colours are even different to Brisbane country side, especially our grey greens. Have you ever looked up Sir Arthur Strettons works he is also one of my favourites. Again thank you for responding, I do realy enjoy your lessons as I have only sust embarked on my watercolour journey.
Oh and if you ever come for a visit, we would love to show you around.
@@53justjude Yes, there is certainly a uniquely Australian colour palette. I love the work of Streeton, he portrayed the landscape beautifully, and you can still see his influence in today’s painters.
@@53justjude That’s very kind of you, if I’m ever in the neighbourhood, I might just take you up on that !!
Thank you Chris, you do make this very simple to follow.
You’re welcome, Judy. Glad you liked it
Beautiful work! The sky turned out awesome!! All of it is awesome but really love the sky! TFS
Thanks Nancy, glad you liked it 😊
