Great exercise 👍🏽 I painted chickens with pinks & purples as an exercise to loosen up from my my hyperrealistic autism pressure that blocks my creativity. They turned out Devine. Art 🎨 is freedom from RULES. All the masters followed no rules and cut loose on their canvases or whatever. Basquiat, Van Gogh, Picasso, Modigliani, Warhol etc We need more such videos. Blessings from across the pond 😊
I am finally beginning to understand “values” and how essential it is to use the correct values in a painting. This was a very helpful demo. Thank you so much for sharing.😊
I had a chuckle because your choosing the wrong colours, for example the red dirt in the foreground and the ‘not’ green trees, meant that you chose the right colours for the trees and red dirt of the Northern Territory and Western Australia
Brilliant use of colour relativity, I do think your colour choices were astute, rather than random but certainly value is the keystone of a compositional architecture. Really well done, love how your purples shift that red to the yellow so it really does read as grass, far more convincing than just wacking down a green!
You explained landscape values really well. I would like to have seen you doing a painting of the correct colours, but the values being off, but great video
Oh, I've heard the words, explanations, theories. I felt I understood all I'd sought out, read and watched. But here is where I find the penny dropping in my quest to successfully use tonal value(s) in my landscape painting efforts. Thank you, Christopher Stephen.
Thanks !! The reason for the demonstration was to highlight the fact that colour isn’t the most important factor in a painting. That said, I suppose it does explain the original series of Star Trek 😄😊
What a great demo. And with lovely results too. You showed us a key concept here that I will try out. Thank you very much for sharing your skills in a fun and entertaining way. 😊
This was great! I understand much better. Actually my favorite watercolor I’ve done was almost monochromatic, but it turned out really well. Now I understand it’s because I used values that gave it depth! Thank you. Will have a look at your other videos! 😊👍🏼

That is generally true, most of the time. That’s why I converted the demonstration painting into black and white. The point I was trying to make is value is more important than colour.
@@ChrisStephenArt Thanks. I mean, it might not be well known where i live (the U.S.) but more commonly known where you live or grew up. but I guess that goes without saying.
@@msd5808 You’re welcome. I beg to differ that Constable isn’t well known in the US. He was known as a painter in the Romantic tradition, a movement which directly influenced the Hudson River school.
@@ChrisStephenArt your so welcome! Really lovely way you present your artwork, very clear and helpful, I’m going to buy a hake brush and try to use wet in wet like in your video.. iv started with watercolour about a year ago and love it although my style is completely different to yours lol.. iv got along way to go 🤗👍
@JohnnyB-art Great ! Glad you find my videos helpful. The hake is a very versatile brush, it does take some getting used to. But once you do, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it
Yeah, but if you turn your image to BW , it does not work. You will have two darker blobs on each side and nothing that connects them. What about making some statement by putting reflection into the water and un-clutter the foreground where the orange grasses are to build some contrast in the first plane? Or you can practise more monochromatic studies, just with one color and see what you can do. You mentioned the values, demonstrated iton the painting, and then forgot (amost) everything when you came to your part.
Vincent said "If you understand value you can use any color. If you don't understand value no color will save you." Thx for the demo. Nice work.
