    This is a good redesign. I really like it. But I'd still prefer a dedicated page for Pages. I use quick edit feature a lot and that is missing in this vertical Page design.

    Ad more head space for tabs and cluttering the files panel shrink space for code and file structure respectively, though the design looks pleasing to the eye, but it's not really practical, specially for smaller screens. These are my perspectives as a developer.

    This redesign (at least the VSCode app part) seems to ignore the main paradigm that VSCode uses: CMD+P opens the omnibar, which you can search files directly, or run commands by prefixing the query with a >. The search in the left sidebar is completely useless as you either focus it and start typing to search, or you can press CMD+Shift+F, or open the search section of the sidebar. Branch switching should stay in the dedicated version control tab of the sidebar, mixing it in the file explorer creates opportunity for mishaps. The workspaces tab bar is a tremendously bad idea, you often have 10+ files open per-project, you'll get sick of switching tabs between files and projects. Not to mention that VSCode allows to open "workspaces", multiple folders inside the same window, which does the 'projects' thing way better. I also find it easier to have separate windows per-project, especially with multiple screens setup (also allows easy ALT+TAB to switch project). These and more are the reasons developers prefer VSCode, while they steer away from the old NetBeans, Scintilla, Atom, and various other alternatives.

    I'm a developer, not a designer, but I really don't like many of the changes you're proposing. Having the branch and other git actions in the files tab doesn't make sense to me. Editing/writing/fixing code are very different work flows compared to doing branch work like merging, rebasing etc. Having all that in a different tab with just a small branch indicator at the bottom of the editor makes much more sense to me. How would the search element in the files tab behave when clicking into it and starting to search? Would the files tab suddenly become the search tab? Would the file list just be filtered (instead of searched)? Theres much more to it than just placing a simple search box and button there. Having expanded folders be slightly brighter feels like horrible design to me. Why should it be highlighted just because it's expanded? Highlighting places emphasis and doesn't communicate state to me. Besides, the opposite, being greyed out, already has a meaning (ignored by git), so it's double confusing handling 3 highlighting states that mean very different things. Sorry, but your suggestions seem nice looking at a glance but are not well thought through, imho.

    I woke up this a.m. to discover TH-cam has changed the format back to comments on the side/HUGE video thumbnails below the video. I was so sure it was just an experiment and I wouldn't have to deal with it again, and now this. I don't even know if anyone else is having this. It just happened. So I have to guess this is permanent, and I'll be struggling with format from this time forward. I know this is off-topic, but there's no one else I can ask about it.

    • @DemystifyingDesign

      Hey man - sorry to hear it. I'm sure they're going to roll it out to everyone eventually, you're just in a cohort of people that's getting targeted first. :/ I have no idea why they're doing this, and don't have a means of turning it off for anyone

    I have a horrible update: my format has switched back to the side comments/video thumnails below the screen. I guess I thought the experiment was over, but apparently not! In my opinion, there should also be a better button for automatic translation of comments, adding the possibility to select the translation language and not the default one based on where you created your Google account; moreover, this function should be added to all of TH-cam and not just the videos, as in shorts it is not always possible to translate, especially in user responses. TH-cam also tends to translate video titles, this also needs to be indicated more clearly because it is not clear if it is translated or in my language.

      Ah good point -- if I were to take a stab at the answer, I'd say that the difference with Google and the explorer interface is that there is really only one context for a Google search. You are always getting searching the index of "all of the internet" (unless you very specifically change that with the --site flag). In explorer, it is not clear to me what is being searched at any given moment, which folder? Which hard drive? etc.

    Designers being designers. You took a perfectly fine software and ruined it by adding that stupid workspace tabs thing. ctrl+shift+n, ctrl+o, open folder; how hard is that. And nobody cares about copilot. By the way nice redesign of the website.

    Really cool video, these tips could also work on YT shorts as bite-sized pieces of advice. Also like the coverage of resources and thought processes that may not usually be covered in depth in a redesign vid.

    Engineer here. The tabs decision is bad. Our context switches are (mentally) EXPENSIVE and don't want to be switching projects. Furthermore, a lot of us navigate tabs with the keyboard. We don't want the IDE to switch projects when we want to switch tab.

    • @DemystifyingDesign
      @DemystifyingDesign 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Context switches as a UI designer are just as expensive, yet Figma still has tabs. Do you think that's a mistake too?

    • @fgpreviews
      @fgpreviews 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@DemystifyingDesign Categorically, yes. Also last time I checked, Figma has tabs for within projects, not tabs of projects.
