The Ladies slalom from Levi Finland was an outstanding ski race filled with great performances by many of my favorite FIS Skiers. On the second run there was a challenging sequence of gates moving onto the pitch. I have cut out just these five gates and ranked them from worst to best. The same feeling with my little one
The Inuit languages, such as Inuktitut, have a remarkably large number of words for snow. In these languages there are several dozen specific words that describe different types and conditions of snow. Naming something makes it visible. The meaning of terms is never entirely clear. If you seek definitions of terms in natural sciences and humanities, where one might assume there's a single, clear definition, you will find that each field defines these terms slightly differently, illuminating aspects that do not appear in other fields' definitions. Thus, the meaning of a term should not be viewed as something fixed but as a spectrum, a "from... to." Nevertheless, it is sensible to strive for as much clarity as possible and to minimize blurring at the edges to avoid arbitrariness. There is far too much superstition, belief, and secrecy in sports, and the effort to structure and highlight the unspoken, making it recognizable for everyone, is certainly welcome. There are many ways to enable motor learning: through literary and rational understanding, through observation and imitation, intuitively through trial and error or success and failure, or through the experience of successfully solving a problem at the edge of being overwhelmed. Ideally, all these approaches should be made possible.
Amazing! Awesome and fun, I have a son in the same age 😊! Go and beat SkiDad! The most natural and fun ski video I have seen!
Great video! I just got the Carv for my wife and she has been enjoying it very much. We have a 3 year old (almost 4) who has really impressed us with her ability to start making turns that have a resemblance of carving 😂 Do you just use your account for the kids or do they have separate passes?
Love this! Love carv. Wholesome video! Happy Christmas. Donated!
with the negative bit in the clips your logic is irrefutable
Im there right now
You beat ted!
Great video. Thank you. I’ve replayed over and over but cannot audibly decipher the spelling of some of the tools. A short list would be so helpful. Without one, I’m clueless. Thank you and Merry Christmas. 😊🎄🕊️
Iv updated the link to my shop at Utah ski gear and added the tools I use in the description
Speed is controlled by turn shape, if you held you turn longer at the late phase of the turn then you could of rolled the ankle and not picked up too much speed.
That’s what the book says. But, the guy making the turns and showing video of WC’s has a different take. Please be honest. Can you roll your ankles into a consistent steep pitch and maintain speed on a clean edge?
I’m getting into expert level skiing and I think my boots are holding me back. I have Solomon pro 100 and I have to buckle them completely to the point where they’re warping.
Definitely time for some new plastic
Very cool analysis. Interesting to see high performance turns achieved using the same fundamental techniques but subtle differences in fine tuning.
It’s easier when the skis don’t touch each other 😂
I like the concept of the video but this is a comparison between race-fit race boots and old, ill fitted boots, not between race and freeride boots. It is a myth that comfort, warmth and performance are trade offs. A high-performance fit should be comfortable (and will be warm just as a result of a proper fit). A loose fit will involve more movement in the boot and require more more reliance on the buckles both resulting in discomfort and cold. The fit should be the same with all types of boots, whether race, performance or freeride. The difference should just be in the type of boot (and liner) matching the skiing type. Just like a setup for a track race car and a rally car, a freeride boot should provide a more progressive flex. The real comparison would be between the same brand's race boot and top-of-the-line freeride boot both properly fit and then compare them in different types of skiing - gates, groomer and off-piste.
LMK when you post it, I’ll give it a like 😉
I agree with you! This is a TOTAL BS comparison! It's a LIE! A really well used Intuition vs well broken-in race boot...give me a brake. If he's honest he'll redo this with a new Intuition Powerwrap.
Why, what is the lie? I have these 2 videos to compare. I left it open ended. The viewer can take away what they want. I respect the viewers and let them find the value. I was totally honest Why so mad bro?
@@skidadTV It's a lie because a lot of people are going to miss the subtlety mentioned so early and quickly. It's like comparing a corvette right off the assembly line to a 15 year old barn find...it means NOTHING...but some people don't understand that.
I showed what is possible in a Corvette and a 50yo barn find. I found the comparison interesting so I showed it to the world. I mention that the full tilt was old and busted multiple times. I was crystal clear. I also mention that I love the boot. Again where is the lie?
This was perfect timing and highlights what I was investigating last weekend in my own skiing! I was really trying to fine tune my earl edge engagement with smoothness and deliberate action vs my typical which is much more chucked into the turn the ride it out, and I was really struggling with those fine motor movements and I found myself really wanting to crank the boot down bc my control felt numb in the transition and thus finding early engagement was difficult. Once the ski engaged it feels fine. I’m in a hybrid boot from k2 with about 100 days on them and they are starting to feel a little sloppy, and especially since they aren’t pure alpine boots. Just something to think about when focusing on my skiing, still striving for smoothness. I am really considering some zip fit liners to help with filling out my boot and building better connection to it.
Do you use a spoiler for forward lean in your race boots? I did the squat test to check my balance fore and aft but because I did a lot of kung fu when I was young with all the crazy low awkward stances we had to do, I have no trouble balancing in all of the ski boots configuration and honestly can't tell the difference statically.
Is there much difference in static balance test - boots only vs. boots clipped in ski's? Just as there's front and rear binding height differences.
I ran a spoiler in my racing days. I do not have one in now for comfort reasons. I still think they perform great
This is a really nice dissection, thanks, I run Lange, 140 rs, and 140 xt3, the difference is more than subtle in wsrmth, comfort, and performance. Nice to have a choice, usually dependent on snow conditions and ambient temp.
Subtle but interesting differences. Were those done on the same skis? Either way, I think I'll stick to my relatively comfortable boots. My feet are hurting just thinking about cramming them into a boot two shoe sizes too small & so narrow!
Is it a former racer thing that we run the same boots until the wheels fall off? I still can't give up my bare-bones 150 flex Dobermann boots from probably 2002. I've had other race boots, but I've logged so many hours in gates with them throughout the most transformative parts of my racing career that I feel like the boots themselves shaped my skiing to a certain extent, and everything else just feels a little off. I've tweaked and tinkered with the Dalbello's as much as I can, but there's still something about the flex and fit of the boot that isn't the same and is definitely noticeable when I switch between them--though I rarely ski the same skis with both boots, which would be an interesting comparison. I have another season or two left in the Intuition liners, but the newer Fischer RC4 Pro boots that come stock with the ZipFit liner is very intriguing as a replacement option for both, and if the ZF hype is true, I could probably have them for many years, which seems to be my MO with boots. Have you ever tried ZipFit liners?
Both boots are "130 Flex" This comparison of boots is not meant to tell you with boot to buy, it is simply a comparison of setups to give you more information in the boot buying process.
Could you get away with a boot somewhere in the middle instead of having two? Do you use those toe caps? If so do they work? Also, how do you like that new rustler 9?
Good test Ski Dad! I have similar setup. Tecnica R9.3 for performance and Lange Shadow for warmth. I get similar feelings. Have you tried the comparison in bumps? That's where I find the differences are much bigger. Happy Holidays and keep the great videos coming!
Hey, Ski dad, I was watching Ted, and when he achieves those super high edge angles, I observed his arm on the outside ski, which looks like he is lifting it. When you look at some of his Carv videos, it's almost like he has a swim stroke. Crossed with a pole plant. What do you think?
Yea, I do the same thing, but I don't know as much about the mechanics of skiing as you. Thanks for sharing.
I have seen Steve free ski black diamond challenging terrain, he is an incredible skier.
I like practicing my carving and can lay down some pretty good turns for a 60 year old guy. Not as good as this guy, but I sometime have to tell myself to stop with trying to make every turn the best carve I have ever done. Relax and enjoy the day in the hill with run of the mill cruising turns. Who feels the same?
What model is that smaller Toko panzer file? Is it the “Ergo race File 80mm”? Thanks!
Toko radial base file - 100mm Panzer File
@ thanks. Do you always remove the “sidewall step” on a new ski? That little raised area right above the edge but below the sidewall?
Without a doubt, the most informative video on how to not only tune my skis, but to also keep them in tip top shape! Thanks Ski Dad!
I was skiing Deer Valley yesterday with friends. Sorry I missed you.
I like the way you think, and the way you explain it. Thank you.
Congrats on getting on the top of the list. Scoring 174, topping Legerty is impressive!
Starting fundraising for the said video ;-)
Thank you 🙏
Thank you for this video! As a woman in my 50s returning to skiing after decades off the slopes, I’m actively focusing on improving this season. I’m still working to fully understand and describe the terminology, but this was a treat to watch as a visual learner. Those turns... WOW!!!
I must say I am a bit lost what he means by a lateral shift to the new initiation point vs throwing your body downhill.
If your center of mass is just traveling down the hill you will slide the top of the turn until you hit the fall line then the ski can engage. You don't want that. To truly carve a full clean turn you need to move your COM laterally toward the upcoming initiation point, this transfers the energy to the new outside ski earlier, your new outside ski is coiled underneath you and allows you to develop the new turn above the fall line. @skidadtv we need to make a video with both examples of the movement side by side. Better to see visually then try and describe via comments
Well put. Yes that would be a great video
@@thestevennyman Thank you very much! I appreciate you taking time to explain it. Explanation re. downhill makes perfect sense given how physics works. Now I think I start to understand laterally as in moving your COM laterally across the hill (from the apex?). Hopefully it is correct. Waiting for the video though to make it more clear.
@@thestevennyman Interesting to hear your comments at the end of this vid. One question: what did you mean by "...elongate the new outside ski..." (5:35 in the vid)? Looking forward to seeing more content from the two of you.
I wanted to see the race! Also we miss you at the canyons
Good analysis from your kids
I have seen so many tutorials about ski tuning but never come across a video with so much detail and useful tips. Chapeau bas, man 👍 and all the best from Poland!
True mastery of ski coaching has a lot to do with knowing when to break free of certain fundamentals and models. Fact of the matter is that no model is always right. The 3 phase model has a lot to do with helping instructors map out and formalize what they see when watching a student. I love it when you make videos that point out these points. I am still learning and improving my coaching skills. But I have a feeling there is one type of turn that needs to be mapped into three phases, wedge christies. Would it be fair that most skiers are at the wedge christie ability? Would love to hear other peoples thoughts on this. I rarely use the 3 phase model when looking at students and thinking to myself. And I don't think its right for instructors to mention the 3 phase model to their students. The PSIA alpine technical manual implies that turn phases are used to map movements and helps teachers describe movements to students. I don't think instructors should say "initiation""shaping/control""completion/finishiation" to their students. I do think newer instructors should rely on the 3 phase model to describe movements of beginner to intermediate to themselves and examiners. American ski instruction is a unique little world, anyone who can ski parallel on a blue run can be a ski instructor, evidently some of them are going to talk beyond their knowledge of the sport. I think in a way we are on the same boat, we have heard it all XD. Basically your video doesn't clearly mention when it might be appropriate to use the 3 phase model. So I take a gander at it. This comment is hear to be tested by the wits of the internet.
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Great examples of flexion and extension with great flow
Something that is really confusing me: While you, Ted, and Steven look amazing with your inside hand brushing the snow, I thought the inside hand is supposed to be higher than the outside hand which, then, hopefully, means your shoulders are aligned with the slope angle, too? If you want your COM going downhill and inside the turn, it seems counter intuitive or impossible to get your inside hand that low. I've tried it and gotten frustrated. Drills like "swords" and "statue of liberty" to feel angulation seem to drive the opposite(outside hand lower and shoulders aligned with the slope). What am I missing? Please help! Thanks.
Inclination. You are missing the concept of inclination. And you are trying to imagine everything from an external reference frame and what it looks like from the outside, rather than from an internal reference frame (your body in continuous movement, in motion through linked turns) and how it feels from the inside. Take a screen shot of Nyman at the apex of each turn and use the edit rotate function to realign to vertical an imaginary line connecting 1) the point between his feet and 2) the point of his belly button (slightly above top of his hips, centered between hip bones laterally and centered between top of hips and bottom of rib cage vertically). If you have done the rotation/realignment correctly, the two screen shots should be mirror images of each other - ie you can flip one of them left-right and they will look identical. That is much closer to what Nyman ‘feels’ internally and also what he is trying to explain - just stick that initiation point at the top of the turn.
Re: estimating point 2) in my comment above: at the start of the video, he rubs his back with both hands - right between his hands is as good an estimate as you can make (also COM). Re: apex of turn (my definition): when skis are in fall line - think of camera centered on wide railway tracks where the rails converge at a distant point down the hill ie in one-point perspective. Pretty much where his tips are hidden behind his shins.
As racers each of us spent years working on our core strength and stability in the turn. I can only speak for myself on this point, I worked for years to keep my hands level while skiing. Once I established my balanced position and was sufficiently strong in it, I was able to allow my hand/arm to drop to the ground from the shoulder joint. My hips core and shoulders remain in the same position regardless of my hand dropping. Now that I drop my hand down, I use it to feel the snow and it gives me more information. Also it aids in my ability to balance in the turn. Just like standing on one leg and touching a wall with your hand for balance
I would rarely drop a hand when racing. With the carving skis these days it is easier to carve and therefore drop the shoulder because the skis come around easily. It's fun dragging the hand. The key is establishing the new ski early, then you can build on it and progress to laying it over more and more.
@thestevennyman do you think it's required and or easier with ~75mm or lower underfoot?
I've always wondered, how fast do you need to go to be able to drop your hip so low without falling in!
That is such an incredibly insightful question! IMHO it is a question that can only be answered by a trust in technology - and yes technique but even 20 years ago a trust in todays technique would result in catastrophic failure, given technology of 20 years ago. And so there is an element of faith. A Kierkegaard ‘leap of faith’. Not easy to do when we old skiers have lived through inferior technology, yet so easy for 8-12 year old kids to master. And in that sphere of life lies possibilities. Possibilities that you must seek, judging the risks and rewards, for which you are personally responsible for every outcome. And yet within those constraints lie the possibilities that Ski Dad is trying to convey to you.
This is such a good way to present issues. With the average skiers rather than with perfect ones. Love it.
Great vid, Joe!
Love the channel. Was going to leave a tip/thanks but there's no Thanks button?
Super thanks is now enabled! 🙏
Simply beautiful turns!
You just triggered me to watch your other videos again 😂 I’m trying to understand the feeling and timing. Here are some questions I have. 1. So, during the turn, do you actively retract both feet and actively extend to the other side or just flex and wait for your body to travel with gravity while feet cross under body with rebound force and away from body with momentum from the last turn? 2. Do I need to drop my hip as low as possible before apex to achieve max edge angle or the angle is developing continuously during apex?
