Ben Weeks Bonanza Pilot
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 9 ต.ค. 2015
Hey my name is Ben Weeks (obviously) and I fly Bonanzas (as the name implies)...until they break down-so pretty much once a month for an hour or two. The rest of the time I sit around daydreaming about flying Bonanzas or browsing the interweb for spare parts.
Apparently I’m attending college or something at the moment so I have to do that a lot of the time lest people around me get upset. When I’m not colleging, I try to put together interesting videos to share my passion. The old “Bo’s” are my cup of tea and I am the proud partial caretaker of two of them.
Bonnie: faded blue and white 1950 B35 Bonanza with E185-11 and electric prop. She’s the subject of the majority of these vids because she’s actually somewhat in flying condition...sometimes.
Bonita: Our recent addition to the family. A red and white 1949 A35 with E225-8 and hydraulic prop. She is pretty but needs a LOT of work.

De-Mystifying Early V-Tail Bonanza Operation Pt 2: Things I Missed/Forgot
This is part 2 of the De-Mystifying the Early V-Tail Bonanza Operation series. In the last video, I spoke at length regarding the intricacies and subtleties of the 1947-1956 "E-series" Bonanzas. Part 2 looks at my Dad's 1950 B35 Bonanza, and I highlight some of the differences between it and the 1953 D35 Bonanza from part 1. There are also a few items I forgot to mention in the previous video, and those are covered here. It would take far more than two videos to discuss everything there is to know about these fantastic machines, so do understand that these two videos are hardly comprehensive. Nevertheless, they should be a great starting point for those considering owning and operating one of these Beech classics!
Thanks for stopping by, and I hope to see you in part 3 when I finally take you up for a flight to show Bonanza operation in action!

De-Mystifying Early V-Tail Bonanza Operation Pt 1: Ground Introduction
มุมมอง 6K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
I cannot tell you how many times I have encountered potential aircraft buyers who tell me that they love the idea of owning and operating an early V-tail Bonanza, but their (insert CFI, friend, acquaintance) told them that they are too difficult to fly, too dangerous, or too hard to maintain. This is the first part of a series meant to shatter the myth that the "E-series" Bonanza (1947-1956) is...
"Red 47" V-Tail Bonanza First Flight after Major Reassembly
มุมมอง 3.5K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
We had the pleasure of helping a friend of ours get his 1947 Model 35 Bonanza put back together and in annual after being transported by trailer from California (not by us for once). The plane had last been in annual in 2019, but it was grounded when the engine started making metal. The owner supplied a used replacement E225, and we got her flight ready. The rest is history!
LANDING AIRPLANE IN A COW FIELD!!! 1948 V-Tail Bonanza
มุมมอง 3.7Kปีที่แล้ว
My brother, Stanley, recently purchased some acreage in southern Missouri, and before the grading work to put in a full size runway begins, we decided to mow the cow pasture and see if we could squeeze the A35 Bonanza into the 1200' between the fence and the really rough upper field. Enjoy the video!

Great job! 500hr TT/40 yrs VFR. 300+ in Ercoupes Owned a Coupe 2 yrs....Always wanted a Bonanza. Retired now and a motor head thinking of an older V tail. Good info. Appreciated.
I’m glad it was helpful!
Another beauty being saved! Hope to see more of this in future videos. 😀👍🏻 Way to go, Ben!!
Should be one up within the month if we can get annual knocked out.
Dude … wtf
Doesn’t everyone go land in random hayfields in their Bonanzas? 😜
@@BenWeeksBonanzaPilot wtf = way to fly! Lol
Hey bro your due for a video!
I know, I know! I’m sorry it’s been so long.
Love the sound
Nothing like an old 6 banger continental.
Awesome find Ben…keep em’ flying….we had two….😊.
We’re working on it. Hopefully it’s back in the air by the end of the month. Definitely doing our part to keep the fleet in the air.
Glad to see you saving the old girls.
We’re sure trying!
How the hell do you find them all?
It’s kind of snowballed at this point so now they find us. This one will be for sale. Should be in annual by the end of the month.
That's amazing man good for you
Run coke with it.
I don't thik hitting the tree tops was smart but what do I know?
Who is saying that it was smart to hit the trees?
You were definitely "Old Bonanza" before old bonanza was cool. Can't believe Garmin hasn't given you a deal yet!
Me neither! Might have something to do with the fact that 1 of her videos gets more views than I have on my entire YT library combined.
Wish I knew you were there. Would have caught up.
I should have made a post or something, but we were only there a couple days.
@@BenWeeksBonanzaPilot I was there M-W. Saw her 140 and the Bonanza. She was there but the line to meet her was 20 deep. Cute girl, got a good deal going with Garmin.
Yeah, I can’t fault her for making opportunities happen.
Sorry I didn’t go to Oshkosh and say hi.
We were only able to be there two days during the last weekend. Was a great trip though. Brought 4 old Bonanzas. They parked us next to each other and called us Bonanza Row!
I like yours more, more interesting things happen. I lowkey think you have one of the best aviation channels on TH-cam, so there's that.
Haha I appreciate it man. I claim that the purpose of the channel is to promote old Bonanzas and aviation in general, so it’s pretty hypocritical of me to rag on someone just because she is doing it better than me. That being said, jealousy, jealousy! 😂
Shes way easier on the eyes than you’ll ever be haha .
Nature always wins!
I think I posted in another video that you needed some power to arrest your sink rate…. Looks like I had that right!
Yeah power was added but just didn’t quite get it in soon enough.
Nice Bonanza….looks more modern than the others….great vid Ben…😀.
It’s still just a 1949 Bonanza, but it was definitely painted to look like a more modern V-tail. We’re getting close to having this one ready to fly. We’ve just hit some roadblocks and life has been a bit busy. Stay tuned!
It’s got a one piece windshield …that’s got to be nice…😀
@@paulciprus9582 makes getting behind the panel easier!
She’s struttin for ya!
High density altitude or just less power?
Density altitude was probable 3500-4000. Why would you say it has less power?
Stupid if you let your prop strike tall grass. It’ll actually tweak the prop. Been there done that.
Bro, every one of our 5 flying bonanza props have touched grass. If they’re tweaked they’re tweaked. We fly almost grass fields exclusively, and at any given time a few of them have 12-16” grass clumps here and there. Thanks for your concern, but you’ve got no clue. A plane owner can leave their plane in the hangar and fret about every little detail, or they can pull them out and use them. We are the latter. Nobody can accuse us of ruining these planes either because we have brought planes back from the brink, and now they get used. A little grass never hurt anyone.
@@BenWeeksBonanzaPilot Well then you’re stupid. It will actually bend your prop ahead slightly and you’ll end up with a vibration. I know this from personal experience. So you do what you want. All your problem. BRO!! 🙄🙄
That’s really weird because when we have our props IRANed they never mention anything about the blade tips being bent forward. 🤔 Also exactly how does bending both tips forward cause vibration? Wouldn’t they still be balanced and just forward from where they used to be? Gee wiz I wonder if the internet rando is just making stuff up…
@@BenWeeksBonanzaPilot Well then you’re lucky. Cost me a 600 mile drive and a thousand dollars for the repair back in the late 70s Hopefully you don’t get To learn the hard way too !!
Now I’m genuinely curious. You had a prop strike on…grass…that caused the blades to…bend forward ever so slightly…and that slight bend caused vibration that left you AOG and needing the blades straightened out? This grass that you hit was 600 miles away, and all it took was one time to damage the propeller such that it could not be flown back home? You’re certain that you didn’t hit something else that was hiding in the grass that caused the damage like a rock or fallen tree branch?
I’d take this vid down bro, anything your prop hits while running is a tear down by the book.
Yeah…no. You tear down your engine every time your prop hits a bug? What about a large bug like a beetle? What about a humming bird? Hitting grass is not a required tear down. If that was the case almost every plane that lands off pavement would have to have a tear down. Grass has to be thick enough that hitting it slows down the prop and the grass along the tree line was thin enough that there was no concern of slowing the prop down.
@@BenWeeksBonanzaPilot omg. You really can’t be that stupid can you? 🤣🤣🤣
not in part 91 flying...
@murrayhelmer8941 there is no limit to how stupid I can be. Watch this next one. I’m all for calling out stupidity, but your advice would be better received if it was offered in a more constructive way. If you just want to feel better about yourself, carry on.
Under Part 91, the final decision does rest with the pilot/owner.
He had his flaps down he was fine
Gutsy!
Old pilots and bold pilots. Lol
Hate to clean that gear up.
@johnmajane3731 it was pretty bad but if you let the grass dry it wipes off fairly easy.
I don't disagree, the early bonanzas were pretty light not sure if this had an electric prop I hear those were the lightest models and I'm sure he was wayunder MGTOW
Electric prop and 1745 empty weight. Difference between hydraulic and electric prop is hydraulic is about 6 pounds heavier. We had about 15 gallons on board, so we were pretty light.
Oh this is so fucking dope dude. Everything about the way you take care of these bonanzas is like my dream.
They’re a lot of fun if you aren’t afraid to get them dirty. All you need is a dream, some cash, and a 1000’ obstacle free piece of land and you can live the dream too!
@@forrestallison1879 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Y’all have me wanting a pasture bonanza now…

You'll end up on Probable Cause for sure!!!
At least you can say you knew about me before I was famous.
dude what in the what?? I cant wait to see what you do when you start making that DR money, hahah
I’m really not sure I should be trusted with that earning potential. 😂
Wow Ben, you’re quite an adventurer! I hope getting out was easier🤞
It was a piece of cake! I’ll post the takeoff soon.
Man, so many feelings. I lost my dad when I was a kid. We rode dirt bikes together. Recently found our old vhs home movies. Scared to watch them. It’s great you sharing these videos!
I’m really sorry about that. I can’t imagine losing my dad at such a young age. Especially with how many aviation memories we have made in the last 6 years. At its core, my channel is really just a complicated oil-stained shrine to the memories created by a dad with his sons. Even the videos that my dad isn’t specifically in, he still plays a role behind the scenes, and none of these adventures would have happened if it wasn’t for him. I get a lot of comments about how valuable these memories are, and it refocuses me on appreciating the present every time. You never know what the future holds.
I've done some soft field landings before, but the grass was quite a bit long on that one.
You should have seen the hay that was outside of the shade zone of the trees. Seed pods taller than me at 6’. Absolute bananas, but at least there were no gopher holes.
That is going to be a mess.
It was. lol still cleaning grass stains from that landing.
Sling blade voice - "Its outta gas"
It's clearly right there
Home is where the heart is, and the runway is where the wheels touch down. 😂
I always enjoy your videos, Ben. You were instrumental in the beginnings with my 1947 E-series 35. Cheers!
Great to hear it Dave! You’re welcome, or I’m sorry depending on the day with these old birds. 😂
You won’t live long flying like that
Thanks for manifesting death for a total stranger. Classy.
@@BenWeeksBonanzaPilot usually people thank just as you did. Always have to look out for one another 😘
I am looking at a 47 Bonanza right now. I expected to see cups on the ruddervators but seems that’s not an ad for this year. Anything I should look out for? Heard about issues with thin skin as well?
Send me and email to ben73weeks@yahoo.com and I’ll get you my number so we can discuss it. I can answer any questions you might have.
How much money did you have to sink in to get her airworthy again? I'm looking at a 48 bonanza A35 as well that's been hangered out of anual for 10 years. Just wanted to see what it took for yours Great video and nice work getting her running again
It didn’t take nearly as much as it should have, but that’s because my dad has extensive experience with the early bonanzas. If you have a knowledgeable mechanic and the airplane has been out of the elements, it could cost less than 10 grand to get it airworthy. If it’s in rough shape there really isn’t a ceiling to how much it could cost.
Which engine? I’m looking at a 47 with the 225-8
Sorry I missed this comment. This one has the e225-8 and in the 47 model it turns it into an absolute rocket ship. Considering they originally came with 165 hp, 225 is just outrageous.
Bros competing with Orville and Wilbur
that would be a flight test
lol right that was definitely flying. Logged it as .0001 hours from home strip to home strip. I’m thinking I can’t count it as cross country hours if I stretch the numbers a bit.
What is that bag on your go pro? Does it stop it from overheating? Ive had a lot of issues with my hero 8 about heat while my hero 4 has zero complaints
Tin foil cover for it. Helped a little bit. Still overheated. Current solution is metal heat sink case with a usb powered computer fan blowing on it. I’m about to record so we’ll see if it holds up to 87 degree direct sunlight at 4k 60fps
@BenWeeksBonanzaPilot ooooooh do let me know if it works, i want dash footage badly but my camera just isnt having it
