15 Hour Student Pilot Flies First Production Model Bonanza: 1947 Model 35

  • My friend, Amber, is a 15 hour student pilot who is brave (or crazy) enough to strap into her recently acquired 1947 Model 35 Bonanza (serial D616) and shoot some patterns with me. I originally had a face cam and a tail cam, but somehow I managed to not hit the record button on the face cam. Despite being stuck on one camera angle, I think the video is an enjoyable slice of content that proves yet again that the V-tail Bonanzas are not nearly as difficult to fly as many make them out to be.

    Awesome! Thanks for sharing! I am also a student pilot who owns a bonanza. Mine still needs quite a few things to become airworthy, but we have been working on it!

    Nice video. Those of us who have owned and flown the early Bonanzas with the E series engines can appreciate the comments on the nice handling characteristics of these airplanes. The Air Force and Navy used the T-34 as a primary trainer during the 50s and 60s. It had similar characteristics along with a dry sump Continental engine rated at 225 hp. (Not to be confused with the turboprop version the Navy had called the T-34C) Nothing wrong with a student pilot getting some experience in a Beech as long as it is equipped with a dual yoke. I am more familiar with Air Force training than Navy, but recall the T-34 phase allowed early evaluation of a student pilot's ability so those who could meet standards advanced while those who could not were offered another option. Keep safe and keep on flying.

      Thanks, John! I plan to get my CFI sooner or later, but for now I have to settle for flying with friends and giving them a few bad habits before shipping them back to their CFI. Lol I’m like a grandparent that feeds the kids a bunch of candy and then sends them back to their parents hyper and with cavities.

    Do you mind sharing what kind of $$ a Bonanza like this one would cost?

      The early Bonanzas known as “E-series” Bonanzas due to the E185 and E225 engines that power them are actually pretty affordable on the used market. For a plane like Amber’s in the video, expect to pay 30-45k depending on time on engine and other mods ect. Some nicer configured E-series Bonanzas are listed for 60-80k, but I’m not sure how quickly those are selling.

    Great to see instruction on such a classic. I have a 47’ in the family and hope to acquire in the next couple years. Have any recommendations on how to find specific instructors on the v tails?

      Man, that’s a tough one. Hard to find instructors willing to train in a complex aircraft but they’re out there. If the 47 has nose wheel steering rather than differential braking to steer that’s a plus. Having a dual yoke will also make an instructor more comfortable. You could try Beechtalk and see if anyone in your area could train you.

    I am looking at a 47 Bonanza right now. I expected to see cups on the ruddervators but seems that’s not an ad for this year. Anything I should look out for? Heard about issues with thin skin as well?

    So you keep the flaps full on the go around? What even is the max flap setting in those 1947s Bonanzas? It’s 40° in my 1992 A36 if I remember correctly. It just says DN for all the way down.

      It’s better to raise flaps once stable in the go around, but they will climb out against full flaps. The Model 35 only has 20 degrees of full flaps. B model on up have 30 degrees.

    How did you mount that camera on the v tail just curious? I have a 1950 V tail

      There should be a little screw hole on the top and bottom leading edge of tail stabilator. Most of them are full of paint or already have a screw in them and that’s what I used to screw a go pro mount to. Just took a black plastic flat mount and drilled a hole and then mounted it with a screw and a washer.

    high power complex, and classic at 15 hours. Then again the UAAAF and the fleet used to use the T6 as a primary trainer.
    there is a grass strip not 5 miles from where I live with a building lot on it. I would kill to live and fly out of there.

      @@BenWeeksBonanzaPilot probably, I’ve talked to the guy personally. He wants to sell. When I say live there I mean it literally. 16 acres with a 2000X150 grass strip and there are already some modern bifold hangars on the field.

    Amber did very well for having only 15 hours! I couldn’t even handle a Piper Warrior at 15 hrs. Anyone fly anything more exotic than a Bonanza as a new student pilot?

      I bought a T182RG at 35ish hours
      Manual waste gate... O470
      logged about 1200 hours on it and replaced with an TIO550
      It's my forever airplane

    I would advise against touch and goes in a Bonanza. I agree with Amber's assessment about how easy they are to fly. I have 2000+ in my F35 and can count the bad landings on one hand.

      😂 Hey it is completely accurate! Every one knows v tails are scary and only expert pilots can fly them.
