Hi there... welcome to things that go bleep and boop
I've sort of fallen in to this - I don't claim to be an ambient sound designer, pro TH-camr, I don't have soundpacks or sample libraries you can buy, but over the years I've accumulated a few bits of random 80's/90's synth things and not really had much of an outlet for playing it. I figured that demoing it in context, a few covers, a few tutorials etc might be useful...
I'll be trying to avoid the DAW where possible - I spend far too many days stuck editing audio in Pro Tools, and whilst I've nothing against ITB, it just lacks the *fun* factor of a DAW-less track
If there's something I think is interesting - a track, piece of gear I've managed to get hold of, workflow etc - I'll try to film it. Drop me a comment on any of the videos if there's something you want to see covered.
Thanks for looking!
If you're interested, my other channel has way more guitars on it - th-cam.com/users/BenWalkerMusic

One of those times when Aphex Twin wasn't Aphex Twin - Polygon Window hardware only cover/recreation
A few people have requested this one - happy to oblige!
A sense of the synths and drum machines that Richard had around the time is mostly based around the '93 Future Music interview - lannerchronicle.wordpress.com/2020/08/30/the-aphex-effect-future-music-magazine-april-1993/
Since the Roland R8 was used for a lot of SAW - see my Xtal video th-cam.com/video/tiynQ33EDwA/w-d-xo.html - it makes sense that he was using it for the "updated 808 sounds" on Polygon Window too. The retuned, panned and pitch automation sort of gives it away. Also interesting that Autechre were (really obviously) using the same drum machine at the same time, which might have been a driver behind his move away from it.
The Yamaha TX81Z, DX21 and DX11 are pretty much interchangeable, and the bassline you can make on any FM synth
Sorry there's no MS20 😢
There's not much by way of sequencing, but what is sequenced is pretty unusual, particularly the discordant strings. Fun times.
Please don't forget to check out my other videos, and please do comment, like, subscribe, share, remix etc - it all boosts my ego no end.

Covering the uncoverable one step at a time... Also 10,000 subscribers??? Thankyou so much for each and every click/like - none of this was particularly planned, so any engagement at all is a surprise! It's been a while since I've uploaded one of these, and I have to say, 'Theme' was a real challenge. I've been obsessed with this track for years, so finally getting round to covering it has been...

One of the greatest synth pads of all time IMHO - this video came about discovering @GyuBeats' breakdown of Orbital's Halcyon On On - link here... th-cam.com/video/XAkCBr8UmHE/w-d-xo.html - and then finding (courtesy of synth legend @jodywisternoff2414) that the intro pad was made with the Korg Wavestation. Modern sequencing on vintage drum machines: Roland R-8 meets the Squarp Hapax
มุมมอง 5K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
I've wanted to do something with the idea of sequencing and automating the sounds on the R8 for a while, so now here we are..! Using an external sequencer makes the R8 a lot more suited to live use, though it isn't without some quirks (thanks Roland) Apologies to anyone who likes music and synths, these jams are quite jammy and I didn't even squeeze in a Nick Batt gurn... When banjos went techno - DAWless-ly recreating the Grid - Swamp Thing
มุมมอง 4.2K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Not sure how popular this one will be, since it's certainly not as high-brow as the Warp back-catalogue, however, here's me, winning a pint 🍺 Not 100% by some way - there's some sample-library fluff and sprinkles that are needed, and I didn't have enough sends to get the long delay on the vocals... also where is the "dig it" sample? Synth Secrets of the Alesis Quadraverb
มุมมอง 20K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
Surely the most common delay and reverb unit on earth, but how often do we take the time to see what random stuff this thing does? Sooo, I'm going to try and explore a few ideas and techniques to show how the venerable vintage Alesis Quadraverb can go beyond something that just does reverbs, with the aid of the (increasingly useful) Roland S1 and the (surely legendary by now??) Elektron Analog ...
Roland R8 - The Autechre drum machine

Many videos have been made about the R8. Everyone wanted it, it's a piece of bad gear, lots of stuff about programming a basic beat... however I haven't seen any that attempt to explain Autechre on it. This video is the companion to another one - th-cam.com/video/M9KKbuzys7A/w-d-xo.html - where I cover Crystel. Hopefully it explains a few things about the machine, how you get those weird sounds...

A _lot_ of people were asking for some Autechre on this channel. The big problem is IT'S REALLY HARD. Especially if you don't have Max/MSP and want to do things DAWless with older hardware... However.... Autechre did a big WATMM Q&A session a few years back, so we know that a lot of their early work was sequenced with the Roland R8 as featured here. As requested, I think? roygbiv by Scotland's finest duo since The Krankies, Boards of Canada - taken from their 1998 masterpiece 'Music Has The Right To Children' BoC seem to be pretty secretive about all of their gear... Not bad, but it's far from a 1:1 recreation
the early autechre drummachine was the yamaha ry30 , a nod to that on their ep We R Are Why ( get it ? ) , all ry 30 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_R_Are_Why
On that ep, yes. The R8 was used elsewhere, not only as a drum machine but as a sequencer.. The pitch shifted (factory) samples are a dead giveaway especially on the Warp Tapes
Wow! Nice job. It all came together surprisingly well.
Thankyou!!
Superb deconstruction! Please do Forever from Snivlization🤓
Thanks! Ooooh, good shout! Will add to the list 😎👍
9:04 holy crap that gave me chills when it all came together

This unit is full of cool presets and fx that make different synth lines sound incredible, from bass lines to arps to pads, really a great retro treasure trove!
I really like the grittiness from it - Hainbach did a good video on using the reverbs from it, though I don't think he ever explored the midi cc side of things. Great FX box though, and still relatively cheap!
Close but not bang on. Drums and strings not quite there. Great job though amazing you figured this all out. Bassline is identical.
Thanks! It's a really tricky one, there's a lot of complexity in so few actual instrument tracks!
No idea they used samples for the piano. Madness. Impressive.
Thanks!
try using something like a wooden table for the dragging sound. SPECIFICALLY WOODEN.
What type of wood? There's a massive difference in the tone you get from (say) pine Vs oak, and it has to be exactly right
@@bleepsandboops idk man, you're asking the wrong guy, but in my expierinece, wood tables always make that kind of sound when it drags along the floor.
It's not really right, but whatever.... must try harder

First drum machine I ever got, R8. Not the best but still legendary.
New video on the R8 coming soon!
@bleepsandboops Oh nice! Are you familiar with the Yamaha RY30? It's a drum synth that I have great nostalgia for, and was the R8's main competition at the time, imho. It cost a few hundred dollars less at the time and can do so much more.
@@bleepsandboopsoh very nice! Subscribed with all notifications on!

I've seen all your videos. You rock, unconditionally.

This is an amazing cover!! And it's really interesting to see your setup and how you put it together. I look forward to watching more.
Thanks! More on the way!!
I have a Yamaha RY30 drum machine that came out around the same time. It does very similar things to what you were showing, but it goes further. In addition, You can manipulate the filter (it has a LP12/24 and a HP 12/24, per sound and the balance between the samples per pad sound. And if you don’t want to do it real time, each parameter can be adjusted per step sequence (4 bars). On a side note, I got to meet the guys in person a hell of a long time in Baltimore, Maryland. I saw them in a warehouse later that night, and they played behind an opaque curtain. Hearing Second Bad Vibel over a PA system was something else.
Heard good things about the RY30!
@@bleepsandboops I should put up some tracks where I was using it for everything, including sequences, filter sweeps, and bass lines.

They're one of those things that on paper *should* be so obsolete they're practically eWaste... and here we are..!
Another trick with the ring modulator.. in the menu there is an option for up or down. By going up or down by just one degree you can get an up or down barberpole type phaser effect, i.e, a phaser which gives the illusion of always going upwards or downwards, a very cool effect.
Going to have to try that out - thanks!
@@bleepsandboops I sold my QV+ many years ago so the recipe might be slightly wrong. Not sure if it needs to be all wet or 50% wet.. probably 50% I'd guess.

I reckon so - one thing I've never managed to get hold of. I believe MISTER fpga does a good version that runs Cubase though they're quite difficult to get hold of. No idea what s/w he would have been using
@@bleepsandboops he used tiger cub jnr? at one point apparently but he also use some hardware sequencers plus prob mac pc....i guess you need to know certain gear to hear the difference. also im sure he nver played live at least not according to any recording available 😉

Seriously brilliant work on this classic !

hey, sorry for the really bland question, but: How did you mount your Nord Rack into your rack, while having something on top of it (power unit?). How can the rear connectors be accessed?
The back/top of the Nord has a slight angle inwards so you get a small amount of clearance above the unit. I'm still using angled jacks for the outputs, but the midi cables and power jack fit in fine 👍
@@bleepsandboops Thanks for the answer. Video is stellar by the way!

Could be - that 70s piano sound is in the right ball park! See what they think on whosampled 😎👍
Sick vid and sounds great too! The only thing that really stuck out to me was the length of the "lake" flute sample fading out too quickly but other than that its pretty much perfect 😀

Funny , I got more or less the same set up , but a bit higher spec'd -Nord modular -Rol. Integra 7 -Yama. TG77 -Yama. A4000 -Rol. R8M -Cirklon 2 I don't need anything else actually
I'm aiming for an entire video composed on Bad Gear... 😎👍 There's a lot of depth in the kit you have! How are you finding the Nord? Always wanted one for the Autechre connection but gather the editor is a bit hit and miss these days
It sounds too much like 808 State ..cubik anyone!., and possibly to sophisticated for the current scene , it might be just me but playing that at the moment doesn't feel right ..almost laughably .
😂😂 Yeah, the R8 sounds like it's all over Cubik - there's a flanged snare sound on the 808 card that gives the game away too... I know what you mean though: I think a lot of the early IDM tracks really tried to put the "intelligent" into Intelligent Dance Music, (mostly because the manuals for these things are indecipherable)... Now nobody has the time, patience or motivation to make anything more complicated (unless you're one of the original Warp artists)
@@bleepsandboops there's on on ebay for £395 with the 808 card ( well it was there the other day) but I'm not tempted cos I feel musically redundant, i cannot think of one idea , and that's unusual for me.
I saw the one on eBay - would be worth a punt. A lot of it is about the instrument as a package.. I've seen a few posts saying how it's just samples, but really there's a workflow that's in that weird limiting but inspiring space..!
I hear Cubik being partially R8 when some of the deep kicks come in. But they have one song on United States 90 that is textbook R8 and I can’t remember and TH-cams not helping either. I’ll have to pull out of my CD.
@RY30DM the Roland R8 was Dance Music's secret weapon ! .. I think everyone ( in the know) used it. 🤔
one of the revelations you help show here is that individual parts on their own are one thing, but when they come together, oh man, it's like pieces of a sonic jigsaw fit together and suddenly the greater whole manifests.... epic :)

Were the chords played by Richard, or did he sample from somewhere else?
Played by him I think? The Evil at Play samples are themselves chords, but you need to play more than one note at a time to get the full effect
