Bleeps and Boops
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 9 เม.ย. 2022
Hi there... welcome to things that go bleep and boop
I've sort of fallen in to this - I don't claim to be an ambient sound designer, pro TH-camr, I don't have soundpacks or sample libraries you can buy, but over the years I've accumulated a few bits of random 80's/90's synth things and not really had much of an outlet for playing it. I figured that demoing it in context, a few covers, a few tutorials etc might be useful...
I'll be trying to avoid the DAW where possible - I spend far too many days stuck editing audio in Pro Tools, and whilst I've nothing against ITB, it just lacks the *fun* factor of a DAW-less track
If there's something I think is interesting - a track, piece of gear I've managed to get hold of, workflow etc - I'll try to film it. Drop me a comment on any of the videos if there's something you want to see covered.
Thanks for looking!

Roland S1 meets the Hologram Electronics Chroma Console
Short video - and sorry I haven't posted for ages - working on other projects!
Having some fun with the S1 (WHAT IS THIS, A SYNTH FOR ANTS??) and the Chroma Console. Have been looking to try out the Chroma for ages, and finally got the chance.
Really liking the range of effects available - might do some more on midi control and automation if there's interest: I hooked it up to the Hapax's LFO and it can make some pretty wild sounds..
Thanks for watching and please comment/like/subscribe if this is your kind of thing!

A few people have requested this one - happy to oblige! A sense of the synths and drum machines that Richard had around the time is mostly based around the '93 Future Music interview - lannerchronicle.wordpress.com/2020/08/30/the-aphex-effect-future-music-magazine-april-1993/ Since the Roland R8 was used for a lot of SAW - see my Xtal video th-cam.com/video/tiynQ33EDwA/w-d-xo.html - it makes se...

Covering the uncoverable one step at a time... Also 10,000 subscribers??? Thankyou so much for each and every click/like - none of this was particularly planned, so any engagement at all is a surprise! It's been a while since I've uploaded one of these, and I have to say, 'Theme' was a real challenge. I've been obsessed with this track for years, so finally getting round to covering it has been...
The Korg Wavestation - Orbital's Halcyon+On+On Synth
มุมมอง 9Kปีที่แล้ว
One of the greatest synth pads of all time IMHO - this video came about discovering @GyuBeats' breakdown of Orbital's Halcyon On On - link here... th-cam.com/video/XAkCBr8UmHE/w-d-xo.html - and then finding (courtesy of synth legend @jodywisternoff2414) that the intro pad was made with the Korg Wavestation. I have a Wavestation SR in my rack of 90s stuff, so thought it might be good to show how...
DAWlessly Recreating Café Del Mar on mostly 90s synths
มุมมอง 54Kปีที่แล้ว
This was totally inspired by a video uploaded by @mastertracker510 , who re-uploaded a video that Andre Strasser uploaded (and subsequently deleted) of his studio setup for Cafe Del Mar - th-cam.com/video/eqsMFXDYYZI/w-d-xo.html Is it the GOAT? Maybe. Comments below. Sadly I don't own any of the JP8K or Access Virus synths, so most of Ferry Corsten's output is out... as is Xpander! Synths are t...
Modern sequencing on vintage drum machines: Roland R-8 meets the Squarp Hapax
มุมมอง 6Kปีที่แล้ว
I've wanted to do something with the idea of sequencing and automating the sounds on the R8 for a while, so now here we are..! Using an external sequencer makes the R8 a lot more suited to live use, though it isn't without some quirks (thanks Roland) Apologies to anyone who likes music and synths, these jams are quite jammy and I didn't even squeeze in a Nick Batt gurn... I've got the MIDI outs...
When banjos went techno - DAWless-ly recreating the Grid - Swamp Thing
มุมมอง 4.6Kปีที่แล้ว
Not sure how popular this one will be, since it's certainly not as high-brow as the Warp back-catalogue, however, here's me, winning a pint 🍺 Not 100% by some way - there's some sample-library fluff and sprinkles that are needed, and I didn't have enough sends to get the long delay on the vocals... also where is the "dig it" sample? Couldn't hear it in Lloyd & Patsy.. ??? If you just want to se...

My take on the banjo stomping monster track from 1994 - please see my other video th-cam.com/video/fGN0odN8FXU/w-d-xo.html for the making of RIP Roger Dinsdale 🪕🪕 Despite the effort that's gone into making it, the video is demonetised because of copyright, copyright, copyright... *All* the banjos, and yet the only bit that the bots think is Swamp Thing is the SH101/S1 line around 1:26 😂😂 ... Synth Secrets of the Alesis Quadraverb
มุมมอง 22Kปีที่แล้ว
Surely the most common delay and reverb unit on earth, but how often do we take the time to see what random stuff this thing does? Sooo, I'm going to try and explore a few ideas and techniques to show how the venerable vintage Alesis Quadraverb can go beyond something that just does reverbs, with the aid of the (increasingly useful) Roland S1 and the (surely legendary by now??) Elektron Analog ...
Roland R8 - The Autechre drum machine
มุมมอง 74Kปีที่แล้ว
Many videos have been made about the R8. Everyone wanted it, it's a piece of bad gear, lots of stuff about programming a basic beat... however I haven't seen any that attempt to explain Autechre on it. This video is the companion to another one - th-cam.com/video/M9KKbuzys7A/w-d-xo.html - where I cover Crystel. Hopefully it explains a few things about the machine, how you get those weird sounds...
Autechre - Crystel - Roland R8 S1 hardware only cover/recreation
มุมมอง 9Kปีที่แล้ว
A _lot_ of people were asking for some Autechre on this channel. The big problem is IT'S REALLY HARD. Especially if you don't have Max/MSP and want to do things DAWless with older hardware... However.... Autechre did a big WATMM Q&A session a few years back, so we know that a lot of their early work was sequenced with the Roland R8 as featured here. Yes, another version of 'Little Fluffy Clouds', but this time #DAWless with a vintage #Akai sampler and a box of floppy disks because that's what they had back then Lots has been said about the samples and structure of this one, most of it covered over on @GyuBeats beats excellent Ableton breakdown. Hola!
Wonderful. Thank you so much for a very solid demonstration! Kudos! :) Note: those animations (on the songs)? Hand made? AI involvement?

Superb mate 👌
Thank you!
So, I need time for my Quadraverb ....
Fantastic bit of kit - you definitely do need to sit down with it!
I would like to control it live with midi, its on my list
This is an incredble re-recreation. I love watching you break down every step. This is inspiring me to break out some of the analogue gear that's collecting dust.
Thanks! And do it! 💪😎

It's apparently the Type O Negative drum machine also. I guess most of their albums don't have live drums
Sounds very much like it!
Amazing ..just randomly found this channel- love samples n BOC, job well done
Thank you!
Sounds perfect for the sound you are after from the title. Any plug-in alternatives (or combination of) for this?
It's really handy having it all in one box, in hardware form for definite! Plugin alternatives... I'm a sucker for Soundtoys tbh, which would probably cover most of the modulation and delay options. Distortion, likely Ohmicide because it's so versatile, whilst the tape can be covered by Soundtoys delay (turn the mix to 100% wet, delay to 0ms and then play with the tape models), and Goodhertz Wow Control for the wackier end of things 👍👍
Where are the drum sounds coming from?
Elektron Analog RYTM, offscreen 🤖🥁
I feel robbed with no voiceover, but what a cool piece of hardware! Hope we get to see the Chroma Console flex its muscles more in future projects.
Next time, and yes, next time! 💪🌈
Brilliant video! Where did you find the notes and chords for the song?
Thank you! I just played some notes until it sounded right!
Love this!
Thank you!
Love that sound man! Come back soon with more videos, you are missed here 😎
Thanks! Working on it, but life/video/content balance etc!!
Nice. I think Hologram Electronics owes you a commission, cuz I totally want to buy one now.
😎👍 I was worried about it being a one trick pony but having lived with it for a bit before making the video, I'm finding more and more things with it. Especially the collage stuff with tempo synced loops and so on.. wouldn't use it on a whole mix, but as a sound source for one instrument, it's great
sounds very good
Thanks!
Awesome. The driven tape sound over drawn out chords is such a subtle thing, but it absolutely defines BOC.
It's such a cool sound, and having it just 'there' in a pedal is a bit of a gamechanger tbh
Ants have needs too you know.
Between this and volcas I think they're covered... 👍👍
seems like this doesn't really work on the r8m. you can load the samples individually from waverex software editor but cannot load a kit. you have to roll your own :(
Bah. Have you reached out to Marco? The R8 FB page is pretty active and helpful too
@bleepsandboops yes he wasn't much help but no matter I don't think it's a product for me.
how did they even think about combining those samples in the first place?
Freedom and time to experiment with sampling, without the pressure to make social media content... Also drugs I think. Mostly drugs. 🍊
Great use of the Hapax! I love it.
Thanks! The Hapax is quite the midi brain! 💪🧠
Amazing stuff the synth sounds are bonkers ! Always struggled with FM gear tbf. I was convinced there was a 606 in there. Such fine work Mr Bleeps !
Thank you!
really enjoyed your video, I remember that cymbal sound,i always thought it was from a sampler didn't realize until recently it was r8, i had a real tr-808 but there is also place for sampled versions for a different flavor, i had r5 back in the day too, i heard these sounds on polygon window tracks too, love early warp,i used to go into their record shop early 90s in sheffield,u.k, the warp artificial intelligence series were a great inspiration to me:)
There's a really strong (R8 shaped) line between Polygon Window and aE - and that Artificial Intelligence album is absolutely killer!
Memory Lane 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Roland R-70, Boss Dr5 😎 Those were the good and days 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The best!
Excellent video. You’re very skilled at recreation of this BOC classic.
Thank you!
Well done! Is it the remix from 3 and 1?
Thank you, and yes it is!
Hey! Nice track! wanted to ask about the ROM you are using for the r8
Thanks! ROM here is the Electronic one with the 808 sounds on!
this is amazing!on the orb version is the bass played by Youth on a bass guitar?amazing to think 3 of Alex P's old mates (Youth,Jah Wobble and Guy Pratt) were all bass guitarists haha
Thanks! Yeah, I guess there's a big overlap of bassists and chill out dub - so huge 😎👍
sick
Thanks! 🍊
beautiful and accurate!
Thank you!
Just ordered one of these. Can t wait! Could you please post/send me the MIDI chart that you blended in at 2:11 min. ? Cheers!
Enjoy! The midi chart is just the implementation on the S1 - it's a screenshot from the pdf on Roland's website 😁
Love the process and the result
Thanks!

I was so stoked waiting for you to to get to doing the pass part. Did. Not. Disappoint.
😁😁👍 Thanks!
All these years later, and I still have no idea what the Quadraverb's Reverb > "Predelay Mix" does. I've read the paragraph in the manual 1,000 times, and remain totally flummoxed. It's full of words that mean nothing. I play with the value, and can't hear the difference (but sometimes I *think* I can).....So, if by any chance you could explain the Predelay Mix to me in actually meaningful terms a mortal can understand, I'd be forever indebted!
😂😂 You know, I've never really looked at it tbh! I know pre-delay from other reverb units as being the time between the sound source and the reverb starting - so you can add reverb without making everything muddy. My guess would be pre-delay mix blends some of that reverb signal in early? So instead of it being sound, pre-delay, reverb, what you actually get is sound, small bit of reverb, rest of the reverb... They haven't made it clear or easy though!
Amazing recreation, but how did you make the visual effects that come in at the end of the video?
Thanks! Video at the end is the ending of a Rene Laloux animated film called "Les Maitres du Temps" - I watched the English dub of it as a kid and the soundtrack has had a big influence on me for some reason... The ending has this ball with a spinning cube, I just overlaid it with some animated rgb changes
This is really cool. If waverex reads this, please make this happen but for the Roland MC505!! That would be so dope to be able to load samples on that machine!
Thanks! Hopefully they'll see this!!
❤ good old times
I wonder how different that fm patch would sound on an sy77
Probably not too different: FM (I think) is mostly digital digital so as long as you're fm-ing two sine waves with the right amplitude and envelopes, you'll get pretty much the same thing
genius :)
🙏🙏
Hello, first I congratulate you for your good videos, now I ask you, having a waverex, is it the same as having a rom, the dance rom for example, if we load the same samplers? Do you have more limitations? thank you
Thanks for watching! If you have the samples from the Dance ROM card, yes you can use the waverex software to write those samples. Waverex also sell samples from things like the Linn so get you started. The waverex software will also allow you to write raw binary/ROM dumps from the original cards - so if you can find the .bin file, you can create a like-for-like copy of any SN-R8- card. You should own the original card though, for legal reasons.
@@bleepsandboops I have the original 04 (electronic) and 10 (dance), but it is also very good as a backup, thank you very much for answering
This is brilliant. As if the existing R8 limitations didn’t put creativity into overdrive, this introduces a whole new set of constraints to exploit. I just blew a circuit imagining all the possibilities. Bad ass!
Thanks! It's a really great expansion - really shows how much the Roland engineers tried to squeeze out of the R8, and now we can too! 😎
aphex twin invented signalwave
And dancing bears
I don't understand using hardware kit like this. All of these "hardware" boxes are digital running software themselves. It would be so much simpler to just use a daw.
Simpler but less fun 😁 Also I like the nostalgia element...
Any chance of getting the second jam as a release somewhere, sounds really good and oddly nostalgic!
😂Maybe at some point - tbh I'm never sure if there's an audience for the jams...! Think I was listening to Kiew Mission by Tangerine Dream at the time... big fan of that PPG sound
