Aphex Twin - Heliosphan cover on (mostly) vintage hardware
Alrighy then... here's Heliosphan on as close to the original gear as I can manage without having to buy a load of new stuff...
Intentionally this isn't a 1:1 recreation - my first attempt at an upload was hit with a Content ID match so this is a bit more of a freeform jam than the exact track. The key components are there though, give or a take a drum-fill.
Drums are the Roland R8 (obviously), the Akai S3000XL, and the rest is mostly the venerable Yamaha TX81Z through an Alesis Quadraverb.
Really fun to see just how much a lot of the early IDM guys managed to rinse out of the R8. Menu-diving is incredibly tedious, hence the fast-forwarded editing. Also apologies for my face: I thought I'd talk on this one 😁
The only modern concessions are a Roland S1 in place of a vintage SH101, and I'm sequencing it all on the Squarp Hapax. Tape effect comes from the Hologram Electronics Chroma Console.
Thanks for watching!

    Can the parameters of the R8 be modified via Midi? Than it would be possible to make a midi editor for the computer to edit it much more conveniently.

    • @bleepsandboops
      @bleepsandboops 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes! Though it's quite limited. The R8 only receives on one MIDI channel, and each drum instrument gets assigned a note. In addition, the R8 can only listen to 8 CC parameters (the R8 calls them Ctrl-1 to Ctrl-8), which you then need to map an instrument parameter - I demo it in a video here -> th-cam.com/video/4-D5TqEgOc8/w-d-xo.html

    RDJ was using tons of external filters. Well not tons but he used analogue filters and digital synths. Therefore that dirty bass could ve been anything really, and yeah he did tons of sampler into filter things, like you did with akai to sub37. Not even sure if he had MS20 or that thing is just insanely driven synth into a filter.

    • @bleepsandboops
      @bleepsandboops 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It wouldn't surprise me if he made his own. On the MS20 thing though, he mentions having one in some early interviews, and that photo of him hunched over an MPC and EMS Synthi features an MS20 alongside an MS50. Not sure when that photo's from though, and how that sits with the general discography...

      @@bleepsandboops I even know the photo. You are 100% correct. I totally forgot, oh well, frequencies and memory roll off with age lol Keep the videos coming mate, love your work. MS20 is all over his early work, I am being a bafoon lol. Just saw in interview, he had not one, but 3 (at the time of Surfing and Ambient ) and he butchered them as the rest of his gear. Man, I too had ZX spectrum computer but i was playing games on it, the first music on computer i ever made was tacker on amiga. Richard programmed music on Spectrum! FFS.

      @@earlsfield 😁😁 Need to get me an MS20 or similar clone.... maybe not for butchering though!! The USB controller version with the Legacy Collection was my first 'proper' synth until it broke and Korg couldn't fix it... expensive paperweight by that point. Was a big fan of Air and Ladytron at the time hence it had to be an MS20 😎

    • @earlsfield
      @earlsfield 17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @ man, that Ladytron remix of “Little Kids” by Kings of Convenience… that bass/synth line, one of the fattest things ever recorded. Yeah, early days were big deal. I picked up JV1080 and for a while that and old Casio CT670 that I used as controller was everything I had. Then I got TX81z, and Jupiter 6 (bought it dirt cheap second hand, like 1994. or so). But by far the most important instrument I had was Akai 3200. My God, I was butchering every single sample disc known to producers back then. The odd thing is, over the years, I missed picking up MS20, that’s weird - given its status and the fact I am in this game for 30 odd years. Have a few filters in my modular rack that sound similar to the squelch of MS 20 but I really want the actual device, I might pick up Mini version. Someone offered a trade recently I turned down - might revisit it. We had MS20 OG at the institute I was studying and later even teaching, that was one untamed beast.
