  • Covering the uncoverable one step at a time... Also 10,000 subscribers??? Thankyou so much for each and every click/like - none of this was particularly planned, so any engagement at all is a surprise!
It's been a while since I've uploaded one of these, and I have to say, 'Theme' was a real challenge. I've been obsessed with this track for years, so finally getting round to covering it has been something of a weight lifted!
This is a slightly abridged version of 'Theme', mainly because I didn't want to push the video out to 20 mins, but hopefully it gives an idea of how you'd go about leveraging some newer tools with older ones.
I don't consider myself a bassist at all; my main instrument is guitar, and bass is just one of those other things... the bass in question is a "Vintage" Sting-Ray copy which I found years ago in a charity shop for £80. The strings have never been changed, the intonation is sketchy and the 'G' tuning peg keeps falling off. Serves a purpose though.
Sequencing and playback was done in the Hapax. I DI'd the bass into Protools, which I also used to apply EQ/compression to each instrument in lieu of a desk and multi-track tape. Final mix then went out to the Revox, which is what's on the video.
    Thanks for watching!!

Thank you everyone for watching and engaging - this one took a lonnnng time which means it's suffering from TH-cam's "you haven't posted regularly so won't recommend it!" penalty.. throw in the fact that it's some mid-nineties IDM, and well... if you've made it this far - thank you!! 😀😀

the machine head falling off the bass really made me chuckle, overall a great recreation!

    🙈 Promo-SM

  • @Isaacandjed

Those Alan Wake II nods had me chuckling. Love seeing your editing/structural style develop with each video. I think if you wanted a recommendation for a newer artist to reconstruct, something from Oneohtrix Point Never could be interesting - he uses plunderphonic-style samples in a really interesting way and his work ranges from pretty simple (the stuff on Replica) to super layered (like in Garden of Delete).

wow, comparing to the previous recreation works the quality of the production here has increased so, so much

  • @jon_gee

Brilliant work! Big undertaking rocking a SP tune. Bravo!!

  • @lazyfoxplays8503

As a fellow obsessed with Squarepusher’s Theme (literally listened to it earlier again today), this is a fantastic recreation !!

I know this is not included here but this video makes me wish I never sold my s2000...the jog wheel under my thumb was such a great feeling.

  • @BenColemanUK

Magical and painstaking recreation, to think this was originally sequenced on some crufty old Yamaha QY sequencer, still blows my mind

  • @blutagg63

    Are you ok?

  • @ziggomatic5772

These videos are awesome they make up a good chunk of my video diet. Could you do a hardware cover of Kimi by Bogdan Raczynski next? or maybe Didgeridoo? keep up the great work!

  • @trivial7

WORTH THE WAIT!!! incredible stuff man!

  • @STMRecords1

This is so good! The execution is absolutely superb, when the bass was brought in the whole thing came together so well. Amazing effort.

All your video's are so good! It's really interesting to see these tracks and workflows broken down on actual hardware.

  • @nicholaslebrun4708

Got into Squarepusher like two months ago so it was like divine intervention seeing this come up. So dope!

  • @mbrombert

Very nice bass playing and the drum chopping/sampling is perfect! Really great job on this one...

  • @brody945

    Phenomenal work!!!!

  • @sunilsolanki

You sir, are an absolute legend. Love these! Can we please get some Polygon Window Surfing on Sine waves? Or perhaps some Prodigy Diesel Power??

I absolutely love watching you work, you're one of two channels I have notifications turned on for. It'd be really awesome to hear you tackle something from Amon Tobin! Bricolage has a ton of unique tracks.
