Boards of Canada - roygbiv - DAWless hardware only cover/recreation

- As requested, I think?
roygbiv by Scotland's finest duo since The Krankies, Boards of Canada - taken from their 1998 masterpiece 'Music Has The Right To Children'
BoC seem to be pretty secretive about all of their gear... I always think of them as the Wes Anderson of IDM - you can spot a WA film just from the look and feel, rather than knowing what camera, lens or film-stock it was shot on, and for me BoC is similarly about evoking a mood and feel rather than what gear was used... however if you're watching this you're probably a synth nerd, so speculate away!!
Huge, huge props to @Psilocy-ben for spotting the trill from the same 'lake' scene 👍👍
I find it unlikely they'd be using something as digital as a Nord or the R8, however a sampler is pretty much essential along with a copy of Sesame Street... I also don't have an SH-101 (or Behringer version) but have owned the Moog for years so it's doing the analogue monosynth duties. All sequenced either on the R8 or the MC50. One reason for doing it that way is the R8 has swing/shuffle, whereas the MC50 does not 🤓

Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for watching and engaging!
Hoping that these videos are vaguely useful/inspiring in some way... I've got a bit of a list coming together, but if there's something you want to see from the era covered, or a tutorial on a particular bit of kit I'm using, please shout below!
🎹😎✌
I'm actually learning quite a lot and I'm already seeing a bunch of stuff I can use for my own music. Are you planning on doing stuff from another era? I think some Oneohtrix Point Never tracks would be cool
Nil by Autechre would be an amazing cover :)
Thank you so much for making this! LEGENDARY.. LOVE IT 1 1 1 1
Why would you want to copy this heavily contrived music?
@@MagicJobby come live with a religious community. In a beautiful place out in the country
So good that “now playing” on my android phone recognised it as roygbiv
🙏 job done!
This goes to show how deceptively simple electronic music is. A lot of trad musicians look at electronic music and think "I could do that easily", but they really couldn't. This is a genuine skill.
Thanks! As a trad musician, this is so true! Very easy to dismiss electronic music as presets and drum loops but it's waaaay more complex than that!
genuine
The guy here just makes it look simple. It is not. Programming 90s samplers and drum machines with menu diving and having to punch in all your data through keys and encoders and hammer out your notes manually and then quantize them is not simple.. Trying to wrestle with that S3000 looks like torture.
As a huge Boards fan, one thing I would want more than anything is for the boys to review this video on camera and give their reaction
😂😂 The internet might explode at that point...
even before social media you could barely get them to appear anywhere 😂
It wouldn't be BOC anymore if they had a stupid you tube channel or god forbid an Instagram account!
Or a BOC Twitter account? Can you imagine that?
All life would be sucked out of the universe, like an auto black hole or something.
Sorry for all the effort, nice video, but the end result has no BOC vibes whatsoever...
Nice to see the old s3000 little waveforms again, it makes me nostalgic
😂
No idea they used samples for the piano. Madness. Impressive.
Thanks!
This is quickly becoming my favorite TH-cam channel.
Thank you!!
^
very true
Same here! How about some B12 next?
i love how you cheekily left the most overrepresented part for last, was thinking "but what about his take on the *bass* ???hes gonna do the bass now right??" after each completed part. great video
Thanks! Had to save the best bit until last... 😁😁
the synth that only appears once is my favourite... just a little guy
🙏🙏🙏 And yet without it, you'd feel something was missing...
it's incredible hearing all the little slices at the start and then slowly hearing the song come together.. when the swing gets enabled on the sequencer my face just lit up I was like "there it is". very very cool stuff
Thanks so much!
Hi
This was like magic to watch. Never knew the vocal sample was from Sesame Street, actually made me giggle a bit at how fitting it was. Thanks for making this!
Thanks for watching!
So good. I originally heard MHARTC in early 1999. My roommate at the time bought it on vinyl and he was at work one night, so I decided to give it a listen. I have no idea how he had heard of BOC, but it really did change my life and this is by far my favorite song. The fact that it’s so short just leaves you wanting more.
their intentions with having you want more are so deliberate its great
at the end of video is a cube from «Time Masters» cartoon✨
It's haunted me since 1987...!
Sitting here having just watched Alberto Balsam vid with my girl as our daily decompressor and then I was like "You know what would be fun, if we went and watched a ROYGBIV cover." Although I was aiming for the one I used to watch before I'd go torture the showroom at Sweetwater, I am so happy that I watched yours and was honestly blown away that it was uploaded today.
Thank you!!
8:25 once that low pass filter hit, the bass was sounding like the first note in Jake Chudnow's song "Flan" (The Vsauce outro music)
👍👍 There a lot to be said for a pwm wave through a low pass filter!
This was so awesome!
Please do "Everything You Do Is a Balloon" next
bop
this is the type of shit i've always wanted. people showing the process of transforming the samples
This is an incredble re-recreation. I love watching you break down every step. This is inspiring me to break out some of the analogue gear that's collecting dust.
Thanks! And do it! 💪😎
THIS SONG IS EVERYTHING
ORANGE
@@bleepsandboops YEAH THATS RIGHT
the music nerd in me thoroughly enjoyed this video. thank you for this.
Thank you for watching!!
Excellent work. Also demonstrates something essential about peak BoC: they had incredibly chords and melodies! It's funny how even with more electronic or experimental work, this basic component of music often remains...
Such a good point. Melodies in Melissa Juice, Iced Cooley are such good Melodies played on any instrument. It’s amazing how hard it can be to create a simple melody like boc does
When I saw Dr. Mix I literally thought “Well now the only thing this video is missing is Nick Batt” and lo and behold two seconds later he appeared before me.
😁 He is the omnipresent PWM overlord after all....
This is how you make great music. You maximize the equipment you have to it’s fullest potential so it becomes an extension of you and what you like.
@petetestube2904 use em if you got em
One of my fav Boards of Canada songs. You nailed it Ben, well done! The Sub 37 sure does have nasty good bass.
It's a beast! 😎🤟
When you hit the note at 8:40.... I was like "YES!"
😁👍
Fascinating. So this is what it was like making electronic music back in the pre-DAW days
100% cassette tape and floppy disks!
16 megabytes on that beast! I started on the S1000 with 2 megabytes, and resonant filter!
a lot of them did use early DAWs on Atari and Amega computers
this is genuinely incredible
Thank you!
Your edits are hilarious and your ability to break down and demonstrate every element in easy to understand ways is honestly incredible
Thank you!!
The Dr Mix vibrato clip had me in stitches. 🤣
The guy's a legend 😎🎹

I got hooked on ROYGBIV around 2004. It's interesting to see BoC put it together!
🍊 Have been a fan for a very long time... Would love to see how they put it together for real (and a new album already!!) but don't think that's happening any time soon... 😄
ayo what the hell for some reasons i assumed this was an older channel i just stumbled upon. then i check out for more content and there’s only 4 videos posted?! cmon keep it up, this is amazingly educational and so much fun!
😁😁 tbf I set the channel up last year so I had somewhere to post random synth jams, and now the covers seem to be taking on a life of their own...
When you turned on the swing. 🎉❤
It don't mean a thing without it 😂
@@bleepsandboops it don't mean a thing if it aint got that swing! 🥳
well done mate, again, makes me smile to see my gear used in the video like this lol S3200, JV, Nord V, T-8
Thanks!
Amazing cover, you have an amazing talent for these recreations. That bass sound is spot on - over-the-top PWM tamed by a filter - going to be playing with that sound non-stop now.
the divide-down Roland sub osc is the clincher. There's no faking it.
9:04 holy crap that gave me chills when it all came together
😎🤟
That cut to Nick Batt cracked me up. 😂
He does get about a bit...
Dude Thank You! i ve been rewatching the aphex videos on repeat and now you come through with one of my all time favorite bands from one of my favorite albums!
Thanks!
Thank *you*!
Absolutely brilliant reconstruction!
Thanks!
Incredible
Thank you!
I like it, really gives a good breakdown of everything going on
Thanks!!
Awesome job! Super cool. Thanks for the shoutout regarding finding the trill sample
Incredible detective work!
No clue how you work these instruments but man is it satisfying to hear each part build up into the full song. It's honestly criminal how low your sub count is. Keep up the good work mate!
Lake!
Lake!
Awesome work. Extra props for using the old and trusty R8. You nailed the sound of the song. Now looking forward to see more of your videos. Greetings from Spain!!!
R8 is badass!!!! I’d take a TR8s over it, but the R8 is still an amazing drum machine.
dude this is crazy spot on WTFFFF
I inspire to have this stuff and the skill
😂😂 thanks so much!
its fucking amazing, fucking genius and perseverance right here.
Thanks!
Amazing ..just randomly found this channel- love samples n BOC, job well done
Thank you!
You nailed the bass and drums I don't know if I would tell the difference side by side.
Thanks!
Wow, so cool to watch the breakdown of such an amazing song. That’s a lot of work. Truly shows the genius of BoC. Nice work here!!
Thanks!
Excellent video. You’re very skilled at recreation of this BOC classic.
Thank you!
Sick vid and sounds great too! The only thing that really stuck out to me was the length of the "lake" flute sample fading out too quickly but other than that its pretty much perfect 😀
🙏🙏 Thanks!
Nitpicking here... but apart from the second note of the bassline being two semitones sharp (should be the 4 rather than the 5) and the missing delays on the trill, this is absolutely fleein'. Superb work.
Thank you!
Another awesome cover, can’t wait to see what is next. The piano sound at the start is really good, I always thought it was something BoC played themselves rather than a sample, although it could very much be, wonder if anyone knows what it is.
Aquarius Hardware would be awesome!
Thank you ❤
🙏🙏
Thank You so Much for this. Music has the right: Saved my Life in 1998.
Changed my life when I first heard it!
Thanks So much Dr. MIX for this Brillant Solo Synth ;) ! ! !
Really Good Work Guys * Thanks for this and the Legendary BoC
😂😂
These videos are just ace! All my favourite tracks built from scratch. Kudos!
Thanks for making these amazing demonstration videos! I love what you do! It's really impressive to see these compositions come alive on hardware and intuition alone. You have skills! 'so cool! God bless you.👍
Thank you very much!
Unbelievable stuff! Could only dream at having the talent to do this!
Amazing work!! 👏👏👏Thanks so much! Now I know why early BOC really puts one in that phantasmagorical childhood headspace - Sesame Street 😂
I have resisted watching samples of boc vids, but I enjoy your hardware vids. I was surprised by it, well done man and thanks. I'm impressed by the sampling work. You keep doing my favourite songs! cheers!
Just discovered this gem of a channel. This is brilliant! Love it ❤ Subbed 😊
Thank you!!
This is an amazing cover!! And it's really interesting to see your setup and how you put it together. I look forward to watching more.
Thanks! More on the way!!
So amazing. Well done and thanks for sharing.
Nice cropping on the Nord Rack 2
The original was totally unintentional, but now it seems like it's expected... 😂😂
Really cool video, as a novice in music production I had no idea that much work went into making that sound on roygbiv! You recreated it amazingly well, thanks for showing us all your equipment
what a talent, you really did the work! it's beautiful
Thank you so much!
Wow that was great! I appreciate your demonstration of how the sounds were shaped. Really enjoyed it.
Thanks so much!
Another absolutely fantastic video man! Not sure if you are a FSOL fan but would love to hear your take on some cuts from the ISDN album. Pure sampling masters!
♥ FSOL - definitely on the list...!
FSOL unreal. Lifeforms poured out my speakers in 1997 when I was battered on acid
one of my best song ever,Nice job
Stellar work.
😎👍 Thankyou!
the build up to the biggest goofiest cheesiest smile by the end was worth all 11 minutes
🙏🙏 Thank you!
Very well done! I wish I had that many patient... ;-) and the skills !
Thats just amazing
People like you are the reason we have vapor wave music
Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
The dr mix clip made me laugh haha. Great job! Seems like a lot of work
😂😂 Had to be done... and thanks! It's quite a bit of work but I think it's a nice way of showing how it would have been done pre-DAW
lovely bit of Time Masters in there at the end too
Good spot! That film (and the track at the end of it) has haunted me since the late 80s... so, so great 😎
You manage to capture the thrill of the whole thing coming together so well.
❤thank you for this. I am happy I am not the only fool doing an all hardware setup with vintage sequencing and akai samplers. A usb floppy emulator will change your life.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, I keep looking at the USB emulators and SCSI to CF or SD adapters, just not got the beans to make it work right now!
Fantastic! So well done man. Congrats!
Thank you!
Great idea and implementation, I have been looking for remakes of boards of canada for several years! Thanks for it)
Great work and entertainment, and gives me inspiration too😀
What an incredible and faithful recreation! So impressive!
Love it ❤
Thanks!!
Absolutely beautiful work. Thank you.
This deserves at least 1 million views
🙏🙏🙏 Thanks! I wish... at the current rate it'll be 20+ years away!!
Really nice breakdown. I like how you edited it as well!
I know nothing about making tunes despite listening to them all day long, love your videos and hope they get the mega views they deserve with time
Thank you!
amazing content! you're very talented as well. thanks for sharing this!
Thank you!
Amazing work really enjoyed this video!
Thanks!
This is absolutely amazing

Top class - you’re doing great work! ❤
Thank you! 😃
Wow! Nice job. It all came together surprisingly well.
Thankyou!!
Amazing, thank you for this
Thank you!!
Your video's make me wonder what sort of great music you would make with a piece of bread, a balloon, and a toaster. You can make music out of anything!
