When banjos went techno - DAWless-ly recreating the Grid - Swamp Thing

  • Not sure how popular this one will be, since it's certainly not as high-brow as the Warp back-catalogue, however, here's me, winning a pint 🍺
    Not 100% by some way - there's some sample-library fluff and sprinkles that are needed, and I didn't have enough sends to get the long delay on the vocals... also where is the "dig it" sample? Couldn't hear it in Lloyd & Patsy.. ???
    If you just want to see the finished article, complete with freaky AI video, head over to • the Grid - Swamp Thing...
    Bleeps and boops are from the Nord Lead 2X, Moog Sub37 and Roland S1. Drums, vocals are on the Akai S3000XL, Banjo was recorded live and then resampled on the Akai. Sequencing was done on a Squarp Hapax, which I'm hoping to continue using for quite a while - full review and how it differs in workflow from the MC50 is on my list of things to cover 🤓
    If, for whatever reason, you like what I'm doing, please consider liking/sharing/commenting
    Huge thanks for watching and stay tuned for more fun and games!
    RIP Roger Dinsdale 🪕🪕

    Haven't thought about this track in years, possibly decades, but as soon as I read the title, it played in my head

      👍 It's one of those tracks that you'd never immediately leap to putting on a playlist, but somehow everyone's heard it... !

    Wonderful, and the banjo playing was an extra treat!
    Looks like he was playing a 4-string tenor banjo which is more common for trad music. The tuning is usually GDAE.
    So it’s much easier to play the main riff on the 3rd string tuned to A (I just tried it 😄)

      😁🪕 I did wonder about how he'd tuned the tenor.. perhaps he did play it in A at 135bpm, that's really, really going some!!!

      How you play it bud 😎 ?

    Swamp Thing! So much time has passed and I still had the melody in mind... haven't heard this for an easy two decades I guess. Cool.
    Edit: fascinating. Couldn't tell the difference, at least not from memory without hearing it again.

    lol this is great. I bought a CD years and years ago that was some dance mix CD and this song was on there. Had never heard of the Grid before and thought no one else had either. 🤣🤣

    that guitar sound was definitely one of the soundtracker mainstays

      Wonder if it's still part of the new tracker hardware factory libraries - be cool if so!

    That interesting, banjo rolls are difficult, congratulations for even attempting that.

      Also where did you get the sample CD? It’s hen’s teeth trying to find them these days. Been looking for some of the old Time&Space releases

      There are/were that had been preserved on archive.org - think they've been mirrored elsewhere too

    The guitar stab is from the Yes song Owner of a lonely heart

    • @bleepsandboops
      @bleepsandboops  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Could be! A lot of tracks sampled that guitar stab from Yes so it's really possible that The Grid took it from there

    Dang did you just pull the banjo notes by hearing it or did you find tabs or sheet music?

    • @bleepsandboops
      @bleepsandboops  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      😁 Hearing... I've played guitar for many (many!) years so was able to find my way around the banjo once I picked a tuning. I had a look online afterwards and there seem to be a few opinions on how to play it, but I'm happy with where this one is - kind of in keeping with the sampling approach that they'd have had back then!

    Your transition music, with the Levee loop, is really fun. What is it, and is it available somewhere?

    • @bleepsandboops
      @bleepsandboops  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! It's actually just a non-thing I threw together as a bed for the voice-over! Levee, a pitched-down version of the Swamp Thing banjo, and the intro synth bleeps from Tainted Love...!

      It's great, I'd happily pay a buck or two for it on bandcamp.
