The ULTIMATE Lexus GX470 OFF-ROAD/Overland Build (For Under $20k) Part 4
In this video, we cover the equipment that makes overlanding in a Lexus GX470 or similar rig, like a Toyota 4Runner or otherwise, a comfortable and enriching experience, rather than a nightmare. Overlanding is just car camping, but this does not mean you have to be uncomfortable or miserable.

    Engineer here. Going stiffer on the rear bar doesn't increase *total* articulation. It cannot do so, mathematically. IN short, you have only so much weight acting on so much spring rate. More sway bar stiffness (effectively more spring rate) causes less TOTAL articulation. Always. Let's freeze frame at 6:00 to better understand why. In this situation, the rear rear is drooped low, the left rear is compressed, the right front is slightly compressed and the left front is airborne. If you added rear sway bar stiffness to this situation, what happens? The rear wheels do not change position since they are both on the ground. Which means the frame/chassis will respond to the increased sway bar stiffness instead of the rear axle, which is fixed in position (the axle moves the frame, not the frame moving the axle). The frame will have less of an angle relative to the axle. This means the frame and body will rotate clockwise (as viewed from rear in 6:00 view). This tends to RAISE the left front even more so. Remember, your front IFS is attached to the frame. You cannot move the frame on the opposite direction (via stiffer rear bar) and expect the IFS attached to it to not move or to move on the opposite direction. This is because a sway bar is a form of spring, but it acts only on the *difference* between left and right sides. A stiffer rear sway bar (more spring rate) will reduce rear articulation and total articulation. You are mis-applying the lessons of Kai's video. Kai is correct. Your conclusions from his video as applied to this situation at 6:00 are not. Go back to Kai's video and note the effect on camber and frame angle as a function of sway bar stiffness and then think about what's occurring in your particular case at 6:00 and how it differs from Kai's CTI ramp setup.

      @@G5Hohn Thanks so much for taking the time to add your input. I truly appreciate your perspective and insights. Question: What, exactly is your recommendation in light of all this? No sway bars? The frame at 6:00 shows how much the rig leans with the FRONT sway bar still in place with no rear sway bar. This combination was terrible and I have tested this spot afterwards with no sway bars and the chassis was far flatter and there was much more total articulation. I have not gotten around to installing the stiffer rear bar that Kai recommended yet (or anything else on TH-cam for that matter) because I’m getting a master’s degree and have no spare time. Should be able to get back to it after graduation in May and test out the differences. Thanks again

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@shorttrackstoriesbyrickcro260 I am running 1.25” (~32 millimeters) Spidertrax spacers with +18 offset wheels. So about a net -14 offset. With 35s every wheel combo would rub. If you don’t run a slightly negative offset, you’ll rub the UCA in front and frame in rear, and you’ll have less lateral stability off road. I think my wheel offset works perfect and I showed what you need to fit 35s under the fenders in another video. (Keep in mind I run a 4.88 gear ratio so the 35s are practical. I would not recommend that tire size for stock gears) I am running non long travel shocks so I don’t run extended brake lines but I already have a full stainless brake line kit and GX460 front calipers/rotors ready to install for better performance. Just to find the time to do it.

    Just purchased a 2005 with 138k miles. Runs great but needs new cv boots and the front struts are gone. I’ve decided to have an air suspension delete done and all new shocks and struts. I chose to go with KYB in the front and struts in the back since Toyota trusts them for many vehicles. I went with metal tech 4x4 for the delete kit and springs. Total for all the parts was right at $750. The GX470 should ride like new and be solid for years to come.

I would not recommend running an HD spring on a stock vehicle though. Would be a jarring ride. Instead you can get a generic helper airbag from Amazon (you’ll have to do more research) that basically sits inside your coil springs and you fill them with air when towing and empty them when not towing. Links below. Honestly, for your situation, running the stock air bags is probably the best solution rather than converting to coil springs. They have auto-load leveling from factory. What are the differences in terms of efficiency for power draw at start up as well as continual draw? Also, is there less fuel burn or about the same? I assume with 5kw you can run it on a lower setting and the 2kw I would think has to be run at higher setting, so just wondering if the efficiency is net zero? I have a roof top tent Canvas Eezi Awwn with annex that about 7'x5'. Would you recommend the 5 or 2kw? Thanks.

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@JimmyDevere From what I have heard (and it seems to make sense) these things run more efficiently at higher settings. I can imagine that more unburnt fuel would make its way through the system if the heat wasn’t as high. That is why I went with the 2KW unit. I think you’d be fine running either. I just recommend having a dedicated battery/power station to run it, as it makes diagnosing any issues easier. These things really don’t like being run through fuse blocks, and seem to go better being connected directly to the battery terminals for reliability and simplicity. They are probably pretty close for power draw at startup but as they warm up, the 2KW sips fuel and only burns like maybe 3L overnight on high. The 5kw one was a bit more thirsty from what I remember. That said, if it’s really cold where you’re going, just make sure you have a big enough battery and go for the 5KW. Not worth messing around trying to get ultimate efficiency. Staying warm is better than saving 2 bucks on diesel per night.

    New to these GX 470s. Does the stock GX 470 have the air shocks (suspension bags) AND shocks? Or were you replacing shocks after getting rid of the air bags?

    I like the concept but dislike the finish and color, it would be nice er if it was polished and color matched to the rest of the grey oem trim. Also it seems you are already trying to replace your wood grain bit didnt get to the glove box and shifter yet?

    I removed the front sway bar on my 04 4Runner and kept the rear on. On road I feel a little bit more body roll hence why I kept the rear on but Offroad it makes a world of a difference. I just disconnect my rear when I get to the trail.

    Why not disconnect the end links and strap up the bar? Then you can reconnect for the drive home.

      @@bt5252 great question. Unfortunately, on the Toyota 120 (and 150) chassis, we can’t do this because they will bind and possibly damage surrounding components. They finally revised this design in the 2024 models so we can have disconnecting sway bars, which the new Tacoma has as an option from factory.
