I'm a bit of a gaming enthusiast who likes to explore niche topics that nobody else bothers to think about. When I created my channel in 2007, I primarily used it as a dumping ground for terrible videos produced with the help of HyperCam 2 (unregistered, of course) and Windows Movie Maker. Improvements in my computer's hardware and the availability of recording/editing software allowed me to make some (marginally better) videos focused on Super Smash Bros. Melee's debug menu. After that topic lost its luster, I embarked on a series of failed attempts to become a generic indie game reviewer/livestreamer before eventually deciding to just make long-form videos about the things that interest me. Whether or not a huge number of people end up watching them is a secondary concern, but I still hope you'll take a moment to look through my videos and maybe find something to enjoy!

Analyzing the Eeriness of Super Smash Bros. Melee
Super Smash Bros. Melee is a magnificent game with eerie undertones that are difficult to describe and often forgotten. This video is my attempt to cover every detail that made its aesthetic so mysterious and captivating.

Reviewing Nintendo's (and Rare's) Christmas-Themed Renders
มุมมอง 6Kปีที่แล้ว
The promised Christmas special is finally done! 'Tis the season to bask in good vibes, so I urge you to sit back and enjoy this smorgasbord of renders from many a Christmas past. A video of this size was a much easier lift, although I think the rest of my life became even busier to compensate. Oh well, we're finally here. Happy holidays, everyone! The first video in a new series (potentially)! This thing has existed in various stages of production for over a year, but I kept stopping to rewrite the script or redo the voiceover or play whatever new game found its way into my Steam library. I finally managed to push the video into a state of "good enough" and wanted to publish it before I could second-guess myself. It isn't a perfect speci...
Super Smash Bros. Melee Debug Menu Overview [2] - Non-Playable Fighters (CHAR SELECT)
มุมมอง 7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
After roughly four years in development, welcome to the second part of my debug menu tutorial/overview series! In this video, I mess around with the wireframes, Giga Bowser, Master Hand, Crazy Hand, and Sandbag and explain some of their nuances/oddities. I also briefly touch on the entries for POPO and NONE and discuss the debug menu's somewhat odd naming conventions. Feel free to like/subscrib...
Banjo & Kazooie DLC Reveal Reaction (Warning: Loud and Shameful)

Just thought I'd upload this since Banjo's reveal was a monumental event. I should also clarify that the uncontrollable laughter at Duck Hunt was due to sheer glee at the thought of Banjo, not because I thought the reused joke was particularly hilarious (although it was still super cute). 23:45 caught me so off gaurd 😂
I can tell you as someone who has the N64 when it came out. The graphics were considered amazing at the time.
I hope we experience the magic like the jump from 2D to 3d again in my lifetime.
Now what would the lore explanation for Ganondorf having Captain Falcon's moveset be lol.
Guy was a master piece . That’s why it’s still alive today. Unlike the others
Great video!
There's a few other games with that underlyingly eerie aesthetic, that I can think of - Seaman on Dreamcast and even the PS2 start-up screen/menu come immediately to mind. The ending areas in Metal Gear Solid II dip into it a little too. I think it's just something about the futuristic Y2K aesthetic that they were going for. It probably hits so hard for Melee because, like you mentioned, the game had a very tight development deadline, so the devs were probably just slapping in these aesthetic choices without taking a whole lot of time to really consider their implications.
If you havnt seen the movie Gamer (2009) ur welcome 😆
Its crazy to say if i could just go back in time only 10 yrs and not give away any of my video games/sports cards/pokemon/yugioh.. that id literally over 500k right now 😢😢
2018 or so My lil siters had a party, some young boys came over and they brought a wii with tons of SD cards and weird chips. Dude had melee completly wide open doin the craziest hacks. I was quite impressed, he wouldnt stop raving about the mechanics. Thatswhen i knew this game was special and why it was my favorite
12:42 i think you were meant to say DK looks like hes just killed someone not a child begging for there parents to buy him a new game
But thats why its so good
You do know that Center ball in the middle of Final Destination is supposed to represent a black hole right? Black hole pictures there is a light around it
i pray that one day we can find the original models so we can get a really good look at all of them from all angles.
I do remember galadore.
While not one to one to Melee, I'd really recommend Soul Hackers (1997) if you want another game with those early internet technological vibes
The images shown at 3:00 come from the manual that came with the game, where they illustrated every move Link could make-how to climb a ladder, how to roll, and so on. Different times 🥲
Melees artstyle is cool and all but holy shit i hate Donkey Kong in this game lol hes so horible just not DK just a different monkey with a tie
You know where I was in 2005? Momma didn't have me
SSB: A kid (Master Hand/Crazy Hand) plays with his Nintendo toys. SSBM: He grows up and works for Nintendo, creates a tech demo where many characters battle. The simulation-like vibes are due to his lack of experience in game design, and the game is left unfinished. SSBB: Angry that his game was cancelled, the designer finishes the game on his own, creating washed-up, post-apocalyptic versions of beloved Nintendo worlds (like Mushroomy Kingdom and the Subspace Emissary levels) out of spite. He creates Tabuu, a being intended to prevent the characters from escaping this world. Tabuu is defeated, of course, and the Nintendo characters return to their home worlds. SSB4: Nintendo finally accepts his game, and peacefully invites Nintendo characters to return in a formalized fighting tournament. Cut characters like Ice Climbers, Snake, Squirtle, Ivysaur, etc. decided not to return. SSBU: Nintendo returns to forcing competitors to return, this time pulling out all the stops to create the ultimate fighting game. However, disputes in leadership lead to a rift between two sides of the design team (Galeem and Darkhon), allowing the Nintendo characters to defeat both and break free of the game.
Hearing the Special Movie opening again after playing so many of those old games myself and being able to recognise most if not all of them is such a magical and rewarding experience, especially when it was Melee specifically who got me to branch out of Mario and Kirby and actually play more games all those decades ago
its the toy story effect
it's weird how they went from a Jungle to a Pirate Ship to a Lake
The wire frames for me is the polygon crew, but because GameCube has more polygons, more triangles, thus making a wire trame make sense, its really fools, it was probably the idea Nintendo had as well
i never seen someone over analyze a game as you did with this one. its weird
tbh… i thought it was always considered by everyone to be training ground. that it was a simulation. especially w the figures. i always thought it was their way to introduce pokemon & other characters along w mario & link into the game.
As a competitive melee player that also grew up playing melee it holds a special place in my heart, this was an amazing video :)
After watching the video, it is clear that whoever wrote the script doesn’t understand Nintendo, or video games in general, despite the all knowing tone of the narrator. They are clearly gays’ that enjoy having dudes come in or around their faces. Good guys though
Dude don’t nitpick the music if you don’t understand basic aspects of music. Such as reverb. Good video otherwise bc I had to nitpick myself lol
3:10 No offense but its clear you aren't big into sm64 hacks, Escape from the Jail Definitive has been out for a long while and has been consistently popular
Smash 64 had a similar feeling. Brawl tried to make sense of the two games with the story mode, but it makes it creepier. Masterhand had a terrifying connotation.
Of course it's a simulation. The first game heavily hinted at that Master Hand was just a kid playing with toys and those toys are the Smash Bros. roster.
Plus, that’s fundamentally what a video game _is._
@spongeintheshoe Yep.
Video starts at 4:30
Yall really reaching with this one
The realest part of this feeling is when you say how in later smash games the characters are invited but in N64 and Melee (and brawl too a bit) they really feel like they're being played, either by a kid or by a computer simulation. They really feel like they don't wanna be there
Hi was this based of my comment i made on your dk renders video and if it is its such a honor thank you so much if it is your like top ten you tubers in my opinion
My first exposure to Melee was a Mario sticker collection, where Bowser was his Melee render for some reason. He was blatantly darker and more realistic than all the others, and he freaked my brother out, and I don't blame him. Melee may not be the worst Smash graphically, but I do think it's the worst artistically. I like the menus and the technological theming, but jeez, where to start? Mario, Luigi, and Captain Falcon all have such bizarre unfitting skin tones. Fox and Falco look unexpectedly realistic and serious for being *space pilot animals.* Bowser, DK, and Yoshi are almost unrecognizable as Mario characters. Ganondorf is...sheesh, perhaps the worst of all. Can barely look at the guy. Melee obviously is super ambitious and influential and all that, but I wonder what it would've been like it tried to be more colorful. Even Brawl with its realistic textures is more colorful and on-model than Melee.
You considered the character design jarring? I've always looked at it as a universal artstyle across all characters. I can look at two characters from different series in Melee and assumed they were in the same franchise, thanks to it's artsyle. Starting with Smash 4 and Ultimate, the character's appearances stayed closer to their home series and I thought we lost something special because of it. Yeah, they're more recognizable, but now, each character's unique artsyle clashes with one another. Edit: I like to think your character is forced to travel through that vortex from the challenger apporaching screen. They too witness the text screen and silhouette, which is even more unsettling.
Great video! Just play any nintendo game that each stage is based off of, you'll find what your looking for 🎉
It's interesting that you talk about the menus feeling uninviting because for me personally they were the coolest thing to me as a kid. There was just a *vibe* when booting up Melee that I had never experienced before that stuck with me.
Man I'm so glad this video exists. I'm glad after so many years I've found someone who discusses Melee's vibes and style. As much as I loved this game as a kid it sure did creep me out lol. It feels like the starting point for a buncha lore and stuff for the series that kind of just never gets expanded upon. I wish we got like a melee 2 or something that had this style again and went further with it
Great video but ngl at like 70% of your points I was like “alright this is schizo posting”
This video perfectly details the way I've felt about this game for the past 20 years, thank you for doing it justice
Smash Bros. Melee is probably the game I spent more time playing as a kid. I wonder if it subconsciously influenced my love for cyberspace aesthetics.
i always saw tabuu and subspace to be a reference to melee whole aesthetic, even his battle theme sounds like fighting wire frame melee music.
What code are you using? And what is the real/official debug menu code what works because theres so many different codes?
Why theres a so many different debug menu codes on internet and its not even work on my Retroarch/Lakka boot like what is the official/real code what works? The version i am using is Super Smash Bros Melee (USA) En,Ja Rev 2. Can someone help me.
man your theory makes more sense super smash bros melee feels like all nintendo all stars characters was sucked and trapped into a high technology compter
