44:45 Not all slot processors have half cache speed. Only from Intel, those that have a cache on the board and not on-die. AMD Athlon in Slot A design have a 1/3 speed cache. Even before the release of the Pentium II, some manufacturers used a processor card with a CPU and cache to increase scalability. By changing the processor card, one 486 up to 4x Pentium could be installed in one motherboard.

I've used the vgm file spec for a board I've made to interface a ym2151 clone that came out of a similarly cloned arcade mainboard. I certainly like the format, but it's annoying that it wants to be compatible with so many chips. In any case, cool to see this project! Sounds cool

The possibility of a file having a bunch of junk that you don't care about is annoying. I can imagine that it's an even bigger problem on even lower end systems. I can't imagine trying to make a player that would run on an 8-bit micro. I know people have, and it must be a lot of work to get it right.

In high school, we had shop class where we learned how to use power tools and different kinds of hardware. We had a small period where we learned about computer hardware chips, and i will never forget our teacher being hyper serious about never touching the gold fins on it. He would constantly refer to it to "Fingering the fins". Even on the test. Meanwhile every single person on youtube is fingering the heck out of these gold fins like they are the king of the world.

I would appreciate if you explained the terms that you were using, at least shortly with 50 or less words so i could follow what flow control, or 'conditional branches', or 'function calls', etc etc are. You're using a ton of terms that at least 90% of people wont know and expecting them to really be able to follow along with the message you are trying to state. I like to learn. thats why i stuck around listening, but i cant picture most of what you're talking about because you aren't explaining any of the terms you're using. and i dont want to have to video hop around to look up these terms just to come back and try to get refocused on your video. Im trying to avoid getting ADD the best i can.

More SGI videos? They are so cool! We used them with Toonz, Power Animator and Maya in school way back in 97-98. My O2 has the same issue with the cdrom after sitting on the shelf for almost ten years. Your effort here will be a huge help if I decide to attempt a repair. I may just sell it though due to lack of free time. ):

I definitely want to get back to the SGI systems. After this video was made, I bought an Octane and a Visual Workstation. I did a short about them... and I still haven't had a chance to do anything with them. The CD-ROM issue seems to be very, very common. Brittle plastic, leaking batteries, and bad capacitors are the constant refrain of old computer hobbyists.

That's not just a GPU, that's a workstation card. I recommend the brand and the model. 3DLabs cards were meant for workstations doing CAD, complex modeling, and they averaged as much as quadruple the amount of video RAM that a consumer market card has available. It's because it was a workstation card. I remember 1998 when these workstation cards had 64MB of RAM in a time when consumer graphics cards only had 16MB of RAM available. They're for heavy workloads too.

It's amazing seeing these videos of your's that are technical deep drives.. I grew up on an Atari ST. Then eventually moved to a 486 (Woo it can run Doom!. Hey I was like 9 years old). Hey this 486.. It's so supposed to be so much better than my old Atari... Why cant I allocate an array above 68kb? Why can't I DMA files into RAM.. Why can't I directly deal with the framebuffer? "WTF I said, This thing is garbage!".. Ahh how things have moved.. I eventually got given a Heathkit MT6800 based trainer and started to learn more... I wish I could have had a mentor back then that could get the concepts of them all into my head. Most 3D work I ever did was raytracing on Sun SPARC boxes I used to sneak into the local University to use (And get kicked out by security every few hours).. Abd eventually when using a combined birthday and christmas money finally bought a Diamond Monster 3D, Started making Quake and HL levels.. Then was exposed to this game that blue my socks off.. It was called Unreal. I've been trying my paws at UE5.. It's a huge learning curve over what I ever did. But Damm does it look good

I am really grateful you all came out and both took a chunk of the collection and found personal gems. I also truly enjoyed “hanging out” with other enthusiasts for the day and sharing the collection in person. I’ve been trying for years to clean around them while also find somebody/people to come take things away. There have been many failed attempts and I finally got to where I couldn’t fight the machines any more. I barely wanted to believe you were actually coming until it became too real to ignore. It was better than Christmas to me. It’s a shame we didn’t connect years sooner and you didn’t have another day or two. The machines (and number of machines) I’ve already re-homed is astounding. I had already cleared out multiple dozens of machines. Likewise, the things still hiding in boxes, the loft, and just piles are countless. Your efforts gave me much needed breathing room and reinvigorated my spirits a bit - I was getting pretty down about having to start scrapping stuff. The reality is that I will still have to scrap things because there is simply too much, but now I can be much more selective about it. The best of it set aside until I’m forced again to decide whether I keep it, give it away, or scrap it.

@@TalesofWeirdStuff The one thing I learned about AIX (at least the IBM flavor) was to always use "smit" to make changes. You could go and edit a config file, sure, only to find it reverted at some point. Seems AIX kept hidden copies/databases of the configuration files and "smit" seems like it was the official way to make changes. I remember when that machine had a hardware issue it issued a Danger Will Robinson! message one time. Gotta like those IBM engineers. Good luck!
