Hope Realized
December 24, 2024
Isaiah 9:2-7, Titus 2:11-14, Luke 2:1-20
The anticipation of something hoped for can sometimes be more exhilarating than the outcome! A child waiting on Christmas morning for their parents to open the door and reveal the presents under the tree. In this case, the shepherds hearing their savior was born and journeying to find this savior. One can only imagine what was going through their minds as they walked from the fields to that barn. The hope, the anticipation must have been incredible. Were their expectations met? A baby, crying, surrounded by animals and lying in a manager. I am sure this was not how they expected to find the savior of the world! And yet, they trusted and had faith that this was the right baby. This baby would grow to become a man who would change the whole world. Not as expected but certainly as hoped for.

For the Future

December 22, 2024 Hebrews 10:5-10, Luke 1:39-55 Mary’s song of praise paints a beautiful and subversive picture of the future kingdom of God. Her words are filled with hope and passion. Her hope is almost certainty. This is precisely what God is doing through Jesus and Mary knows. The question is, do you? Can you imagine a world like Mary sings about? If you can imagine it, what is to stop us f...

December 18, 2024 Isaiah 12:2-6 Isaiah is written by multiple people over a long period of time that includes war, exile, and the return from exile. The prophets write in times that would have felt hopeless and yet they muster up songs of praise with hopeful expectations. How does hope keep you going when the times seem tough?

December 15, 2024 Philippians 4:4-7, Luke 3:7-18 When people heard John speak, what were they thinking? His message was so different. Imagine what they expected the Messiah to be. Powerful, baptizing with fire, not even John is worthy to untie his sandals (an act reserved for slaves). Jesus might have been quite the surprise to these people. He didn’t overthrow the rulers. He didn’t de-throne a...

December 11, 2024 Malachi 3:1-4 In Hebrew, Malachi means “my messenger.” We don’t know who this messenger is who writes this last book of the Old Testament, but they are writing in a time after exile as the temple is being rebuilt and dedication to the Jewish faith is at an all-time low. Malachi’s message is to the priests and people to help them prepare for what God will do next. In some ways,...

December 8, 2024 Philippians 1:3-11, Luke 3:1-6 Hope and dread are not all that far off from one another. In fact, one could turn to the other quite quickly. Luke shares with us the rulers of the land leading up to the introduction of John the Baptist not only to identify the point in time that all of this occurs but possibly to demonstrate the powers of the world that are lord in the time. Joh...

December 4, 2024 Jeremiah 33:14-16 The prophet, Jeremiah writes during a period (626-586 BCE) of war and complete destruction. During his life, the Babylonian king, Nebuchadrezzar destroyed the kingly succession that God had promised to David, destroyed the temple in Jerusalem that Solomon had built in 960 BCE, and destroyed the belief that Jerusalem was invincible. For the Jewish of this time,...

Hope: When All Seems Lost

December 1, 2024 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13, Luke 21:25-36 The readers of Luke must have been so hopeful when they first read these verses. “…this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place.” They must have been thinking that Jesus’ return was only days away. And now we read this text 2000 years later, in a hurting world, wondering when will God’s kingdom reign again? This is w...
The End is Near!

November 17, 2024 Daniel 12:1-3, Mark 13:1-8 The end is near! Every generation believes that theirs is the last on this earth. So far, they have all been wrong! Jesus’ disciples and the ancient Israelites are no different. So, what do we do with end times prophecies, and will we actually know when it is the end?

November 10, 2024 1 Kings 17:8-16, Mark 12:38-44 In moments of history like we are currently in, it is important to remember who the one true Lord is. Those in power too often are the causes of the lack in our nation and world. This is not something new. The widow from 1 Kings and the widow from Mark’s gospel are both individuals whom their leaders have failed. King Ahab has ruled over Northern...
Reformation: True Freedom

October 27, 2024 Romans 3:19-28, John 8:31-36 Freedom is a word we use regularly in America, especially this time of year as we approach an election. The idea of freedom is great, however, too often one person’s freedom is another person’s slavery. But Jesus offers up a different kind of freedom. It is not tied down by laws or connected to politics. It is not ruled over by presidents or legisla...
