Why I don't own an RV
In this eye-opening video, we delve into the real reasons why owning an RV may not be as idyllic as it seems. Join us as we break down the practical, operational, and capital costs of RV ownership. From hefty initial purchases to ongoing maintenance and fuel expenses, we lay out all the hidden costs that could drain your wallet. Discover why the dream of life on the open road might not be worth the financial burden. Before you invest in an RV, watch this video and make an informed decision.
My dream retirement was to drive an RV to the most beautiful places in the country, crank out the awning and sit in my chair enjoying a beer.
• And dreams are what seem to sell RV’s. Their ads are full of happy families, cute young couples, and seniors enjoying games with their grandkids.
• There are advantages to RV’s. Vans and RVs allow you to avoid sleeping in a strange bed altogether, you carry your own bed along with you! And, superficially, you save the money of staying in a motel.
• However, even before considering the cost, RVs have downsides. I mean, you never have to level your motel room before going to bed, but you do on an RV. Plus, motel rooms never run out of hot water or heat, things you need to monitor in your RV. And you never have to worry about overfilling your holding tanks or emptying your grey water or black water tanks in a motel! Plus, you have to clean up your own RV--housekeeping staff does that for you in a motel.
• There are shocking reports of the numbers of bugs and failures in new RVs, and speaking of bugs, mice can be a problem.
• And, if you have a fight with your traveling companion, how are you going to get away? A class B has 100 square feet of space. That does not give a lot of room for quarreling couples. RVs can lead to togetherness or divorce!
• But enough of these practical concerns, there are still numerous justifications for owning an RV. I‘ve been thinking about getting one again. But what stops me every time are the costs.
• First, even if the RV were free, it costs money to operate. For example, I hike at Grand Canyon once a month. It is a 1,000 mile round trip and I stay for two nights. Just the difference in gas for an RV compared with a car is meaningful. For example, a gas powered Class B gets 15 mpg. A Prius AWD got 50 mpg in a recent Consumer reports test. With gas at $4 a gallon, that’s a $186 dollar difference.
• Plus, at a National Park, you do not get to park your RV for free. To stay in the trailer village at Grand Canyon costs $80 or more per night. The government run campground costs $18. Let’s say on a Winter night, I choose the trailer village with full hook-ups. That is another $160 for two nights.
• So, the cost for gas and parking is $346 for a two-night stay. What about a motel? A couple of weeks ago, I stayed at Maswik Lodge two nights for $166, that is a $180 savings over staying in an RV in the camper village and still $56 less than the RV in the basic government campground. And that is just comparing operating costs and ignoring capital costs.
• The initial capital cost of an RV is astronomical. For example, a mid-level Winnebago costs about $150K! That is almost as much as I paid for my house. But my house has doubled in value, while the value of an RV plunges over time.
• The same RV you pay $150K for now will be worth about $50k in four years.
• It would probably be optimistic for me to expect to use the RV for 34 nights a year, that is based on a two-night trip 10 months of the year, plus two additional week-long trips, one in the Spring and one in the Fall.
• If I financed the RV purchase, for 48 months at 7%, my monthly payment would be over $3,500 a month, but that is ridiculous. So, let’s pretend that I have the $150k in the bank, and I pay cash. That would result in a capital loss of $100k over 4 years, plus a loss-of-opportunity on the 150K sitting in the RV, which assuming a conservative Cd with simple interest of 4%, would consume another $24,000 of income over the 4 years. So, a loss of $140K over 4 years. Assuming the optimistic usage of 34 nights a year, the capital loss of the RV would be $1,029 per day of use. And even if I bought a used RV for 1/3 the cost, it would still be $343 a usage night for capital costs. That is before gas, repairs, insurance, storage and site fees.
• And if you think my analysis is unrealistic, there is an attractive used RV for sale near me. It is nearly identical to the one in my analysis, but it is 10 years old and the fellow is asking $50k. It only has 10,000 miles on it. That is 1,000 miles a year. If his depreciation loss is $100K, each 1,000 mile trip cost him $10,000 before any of the other expenses. Costs are the core issue that separate the dream from the reality in RV ownership, and the costs are why I do not own an RV.

I sleep in my own bed (no hotel), eat my own food (no restaurant) secured in my RV. I have had 2 RVs in the last 20 years. RV's are not for the faint hearted or mechanically deficient. Compared to the cost of RVing with gas and site stay is about 35-40% less than hotels and restaurant. You still have to put gas in your car. Why not travel in style...RV all the way.

Why are you comparing RV's to a hotel room. Makes no sense. You buy an rv knowing all those things. Sounds like you want all the conveniences of a stationary home in an rv. This comparison is ridiculous. You're just complaining about costs. Then go stay in a hotel. If there's a mouse in my rv yes i have to get rid of it. In a hotel they have to get rid of it. That's one of your complaints. It's your rv you're supposed to take car of it. This is just ridiculous.

Haha, I saw the clock on your table and thought 2am! Then I realize that at 64 I do wake at 4am myself. Thanks for the old style video, the honest title and not punching me in the face to get a 'thumb-up". 🙂

I've always enjoyed solitude, even more so now that I've reached 60. For over 25 years I used to hike alone, often along the coast between Llandudno and Oude Schip in Cape Town. Oude Schip is also known to regulars as "the island", due to it being cut off from the mainland at high tide, sometimes requiring a crossing in chest-high water. I would spend the entire day at the island with a book, enjoying the sun and sea, rarely ever seeing others. I loved it, yet many I spoke to couldn't imagine themselves doing the same. I stopped in 2010 after a near knife attack less than five minutes from the car park, since then muggings have become the norm. Hiking while having to worry about who may be hiding behind the next bush, or if those approaching are friend or foe, nullifies all the psychological benefits associated with a day out alone. Now it's a case of safety in numbers, groups of 20 or more, which is no fun at all.

We’ve had four of them over 30 years. Yes, even buying used with our own property to store them on; they are very expensive and massively time consuming to fix and maintain. But… We have had our best family memories getting to some very beautiful places. At this point in life a second getaway home that will probably have massive appreciation is a much better way for us. It also allows us to have a second community of friends, hiking buddies at church members.

My wife (a Dr) and myself are fortunate to be educated, business owners and fiscally skund. We decided 15 yrs ago when We were both in our 40's to rearrange our life so we could become reclusive. Not poor, not living in some shed in the woods ... We have a beautiful home i. a super rural setting inside a national park. We have zero friends. We have absolutely minimum interaction with people IRL and little on the internet. The best decision we ever made. People, en mass, are over emotional, hysterical and to the most part deeply ignorant of life. As reclusives we are extremely happy 😁

I understand. So you are just talking to yourself in this video, which you made despite not feeling the need to communicate with others. Ah, the quiet contemplation of being alone in front of a camera speaking to an TH-cam audience - needing to explain to people how you don't need them. I enjoy being alone and an important part of it is being free from having to communicate with others. It's like a good deed - it loses value once you broadcast it.

As a truck driver for over 44 years( Retired now) I'd lay over at least 1 night per week and was offered a sleeper or Hotel, I chose the Hotel all those years. I like the minivan idea where if I'm tired from driving,I can sleep the night in a safe parking lot and save some cash to boot. Being a nerd or "practical person" and spender might go against a "freespirit's" (live free) mentality. But with the Minivan, I can kinda have the best of both worlds. Plus it's our already owned vehicle. Great video

I look forward to every minute now when I am alone. When people ask me to join them socially I actually find the prospect very unappealing, it cuts into my own time for interests, and all I'm going to hear is a lot of conversation I don't find engaging. I'm not lonely, in fact I only feel lonely when surrounded by people I share little in common with. Solitude can be very comfortable.
