Thanks for the review; I love your reviews of wide-toe box shoes! I'm looking for shoes to wear in the early winter, down to -5°C let's say. Do you think the Altra Olympus 6 Mid GTX or the Topo Athletic Trailventure 2 WP will keep my feet warm in winter?
I think the Altra Mid GTX are warmer, maybe because the upper is mostly leather instead of nylon like the Topos. I have also recently had durability issues with the Topos, so I am wearing the Altras currently. I have no problem with warmth, even in snow and slush, but they do get warm on hot weather hikes, but I wear them even then for the waterproof feature. Altra has a free 30 day trial with free shipping and returns, so you really can't go wrong givng them a try!
Goretex is admittedly hot, but I hate wet feet and I often do stream crossings when hiking. Around town I wear the ventilated low Olympus, which is much cooler, but it does allow some dirt in (dirty white socks). To me the compromise of hot feet while hiking is worth it to avoid wet feet and dirt, but that is an individual choice.
Hi GC Hiker, I have had a bunch of the Topo terraventura boots and I especially like the low top terraventura 4 but am starting to get a little too much rock feel in my mid foot with them. Interesting I have found them super durable. I am thinking of giving the Olympus 6 a try--will likely start with the shoe version. How is it for those pesky rocks that push up from trails like the AT compared to the Topos? I noticed they don't have a rock plate but on the other hand are pretty thick.
I was suprised how quickly I felt the rocks in my Topo Trailventues, despite having a rock plate. I think when new, the Olympus are similar in rock feel to the Topos, but with age, they do a bit better. It seems all these maximal cushion shoes compress to a degree, but I have gotten 1500 miles out of Olympus 4 lows for local walking, and I expect the Oly 6's to have solved the sole issues. Let me know what you choose and how it works out for you!
Honestly, it has been a while since I wore lone peaks, so I cannot say. I think the sizing is tighter on the leather/goretex shoes, likely because they do not account for the thickness when making the shoe. I always like a little "slide room," as most of my hiking is going up or down a steep slope. Altra has free shipping, free 30 day trial & free returns, so maybe the best bet is getting a pair in your regular size and trying them out. I do not find much change in the Altra sizing with use, maybe only a bit of sinking into the foam a bit.
I do not. I have tried a few and they never were an improvement for me, but I understand that many find them helpful. Plus, I think I figure in a $220 shoe, they had better fit right! Luckily the original insoles work out well for me with a little wear.
On paper my Altra Olympus 5 Hike Low GTX shouldn't feel as good as the Altra Olympus 6 Trail, but they do. I tried out Altra Olympus 6 and they feel horrible.
It really is odd how they change the shoes from generation to generation. I still miss the Oly 4. I have both Oly 5 & 6 mids, and they feel the same to me, but that has no application to the lows. I often wish they would just leave shoes the same. . .
Now that sure looks like an amazing hiking shoe for sure!!
I like it!

very beauty shoes
I agree, but it is the funtcion that matters.
I definitely need a new pair. Do you like the gortex?

do you know how is the sizing compared to the lone peaks? Are they really smaller? Do you think I should buy half size larger?

Do you use any Insoles & Orthotics?

@@GC-Hiker good for you. I am using the Tread Labs Pace insoles.
@@TobyVisuals808 I will try to take a look at them if I see them available. I am lucky that I get by with most original insoles.
