Fire Emblem Unit Design
มุมมอง 7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Everyone wants to ensure that they create a well-balanced cast in their hack. It is always stinky to know that one option is strictly superior to the next best in a specific role. Let's break down the different elements that make units worth using and how we can find ways to make units have meaningful advantages and disadvantages over their next best replacement across a number of dimensions. Late Game Maps in Fire Emblem
มุมมอง 2.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I always hit a wall when I play late games in Fire Emblem, both vanilla and hacks. While part of this is due to my preferences in FE, there are some common issues I see with late game maps that we can work to mitigate in our own work.

Fates Conquest's final level on hard mode is the only chapter in the whole FE series that I have never been able to beat no matter how hard I train for it the whole game. Then again I do try to make sure everyone survives. If I played without caring if everyone makes it, then I could probably do it, but man it honestly feels so busted.

I do feel like modern games have pretty much abandoned Iron Man. If I focus all of my effort on leveling my lords, they can become so strong that they can solo the game with 0 effort. In some cases, it is actually way easier late game if you just don't care about other units

Regarding your question on the FE6 cavaliers: Noah: I would make a Brave Sword available from the Ch9 village instead of a Silver Sword. Noah, by using the Knight's Crest would likely be the only paladin with access to this during the axe-heavy Western isles arc. I think this is enough to give him his own niche, as the 8 move brave sword user. The other cavs/paladins will need a good deal of investment to use this, and they all lose some speed from it - Noah's 12 con is perfect for it however. Also, there is no Brave Sword in FE6 for the player, so while ch9 is really early for such a strong weapon it's not even there to begin with. Not a prf of course but his unique weapon rank niche is strengthened by this. this would make Rutger even stronger, but admittedly Dieck would probably benefit more form this, adding some weight to having Dieck as your first hero's crest user. but they only have 6 move. Treck: This is tough. I like how PE made him the growth great knight, but FE6 is not PE. Taking more subtle changes that keep the concept of FE6 the same, maybe just a boost to his defense base. He still remains a growth unit, and 30% in defense is good but not consistent. Maybe give him 10 base defense at level 4? Taking less subtle changes, keep his stat spread the same, but alter him and only him to be allowed to rescue units without any penalties to speed nor skill. He would have high move and defense, and he can't hit much anyways with his lackluster skill normally, but he could make use of his defense and mediocre speed to ferry units around and rescue units while getting doubled less than others. Something about his oblivious nature leads me to believe this would fit too. However, this is such a big exception to make with admittedly unforeseen consequences on my part. But it would be interesting and give him a very unique role.

Playing Vestaria Saga blind and its hilarious. After losing my best unit in ch.3 to a spell crit Troy picked up the slack and became a god unit only to also die to a random crit 7 chapters later. I've noticed that although i lost like 10 units+ by ch11, the 6 i had left were either super overleveled or capped needing to class change. Even the weakest pegasus sister who was my only flier left was super strong on tier 2. She took out ch11's knight boss. There are a lot of cheap trash weapons which helps when everyone has proc skills to attack 3+ times doing minor damage. It's been fun ironmanning blind even if its cruel with invisible enemies, 100% status tomes from 7+ range with 100% accuracy and more bs lol.

Personally, I give armors really good combat; high STR, high SKL, high DEF, and weapon triangle control (lance/axe for unpromoted, weapon triangle + bows for promoted), and let them manipulate enemy AI into focusing on them like how FE1 AI forces enemies to attack Marth. High SPD doesnt really make sense for a bulky, heavy tank, so I'd rather just give them wary fighter 5 MOV is an easy fix to make armor knights *good*, but imo makes them a little less unique. If you want to give them more movement, Id rather is be through movement-based skills

It seems like this was made at a time when the ethos was still that players should try to maximize exp and that jagens suck. So tsagan is super op, but the endgame is insane so you are actually punished for using him too much. It's a russian doll of self fulfilling prophecies. If you were to go into this game under the doctrines of the past, you probably wouldn't get blindsided like this and would experience a much smoother difficulty curve, with a slightly harder early game and much easier late game. The developer didn't feel the need to warn anyone because everyone was fretting over exp by default at the time. This game is a glimpse into a world where our fears about jagens were correct the whole time. And honestly, I think that's pretty cool, as long as you know what you're in for. A lot of players back then really enjoyed trying their best to balance exp and train growth units; the only problem is that they were unknowingly preparing for an endgame challenge that never existed. But in SoHaE, it *does* exist, and exp management *does* matter a lot, and you are juggling that with unique map gimmicks to boot. The fire emblem dream we thought we woke up from is now a reality.

It might not be my place to speak since I'm not even done with my first playthrough. But I'm not sure if worse is necessarily bad. You can raise a unit to become a member of a good class, like a swordmaster, and they are still going to be useful in all the things a swordmaster is good at, even if they are not as great as a wyvern lord.

The other thing i hate about 3H reclassing is the lack of a weapon triangle. It doesn't feel like there's a big difference between swords/Lances/axes so it doesn't feel like picking one over the other really matters.

I liked Nephenee a lot because of how she’s straight up a recruit/conscript, and she reflects this well. Her base stats are very poor, her weapon rank is E, and has decent but not crazy growths. I mean, rank E for gods sake, she can’t even use javelins for a while. She represents a typical soldier as just a farmer that got caught up in a war, which does a lot for the world building.

And her better starting stats in Radiant Dawn reflect how she's now "experienced" in the art of war! A far cry from the conscript recruit she was then (In POR she was a potential winner if trained and I've ALWAYS got my investment back with her! It's why those similar to her like say Lapis of Engage catch my attention! Nephenee was my first major introduction to using "Est" like units! Difference is she's more the Villager/Trainee such as Amelia. But I've always loved such units as I always got a return of investment with them, I am more of a "I pick units I like as characters" more then "Base Stats/Growths" I acknowledge those, but I frankly deal with it and work around them! Not a fan of One man armies in games that demand team work! If I wanted that I'd play a typical Multiplayer! Frankly Neph "My Valkyrie Goddess" never failed to hit an enemy, survived situations she should have died as I made a BIG mistake in my first run of POR and she found herself dealing with THREE Axe users in the early portion when she was JUST getting around to using D Lances. Got hit by one, dodged the other two and luckly Mist, Mia and Soren were nearby to help clean up and heal her! But MAN was I panicking! Even though Rewind in FE hasn't taken this feeling away! I've always had a love about those moments when a character is getting bum rushed and you panic on if they'll die or not! In my case, I auto reset if they do die as I'm a NO ONE DIES player! And those moments while stressful, are VERY memorable and one of the major reasons why I love the series so much).

Oboro is quite solid in fates, easy to use and is fine in her base class. Joins ready to promote and is one of your bulkier units when your army has been kinda squishy in both birthright and in revelation and in fact is actually usable on her join map, even on lunatic, unlike a sad amount of the revelations cast. She has some good growths and modifiers to pass on to physical kids, Subaki and Takumi are pairings I like overall. On both routes you can A+ support with Mozu who will give her Archer so she can go Kinshi Knight and in revelation A+ support with Beruka she can go wyvern which is nice given some of revelations maps and Beruka isn't too terrible herself and friendship seals aren't in too awful high demand, especially early iirc. She's no Camilla, Corrin or Ryoma but she can fill in the ranks of your army no matter what difficulty you are on and is fine in her base class and can benefit from some investment, she was never over powered or a major part of maps but with some preparation she hit the benchmarks needed to be a solid combat unit in my playthroughs and at worst a good stat backpack unit.

i like the inspirational tone during the recommendations segment the way i'm doing it in SRPGS, playables, including recruits have one personal, and promoted units have a class skill. playables have one skill setting them apart, you can easily tell if someone has a skill based on map sprite or if they have a face, and it's not going to require the player to keep a spreadsheet on hand

Honestly, I want proc skills to instead work kinda like in Heroes. Instead of having a chance to activate, based on your stats, they have a charge meter that's listed under the skill icon. As you attack enemies, the meter charges. The proc rate becomes the charge rate. For example, Ignis would charge at a rate equal to your Skill as a percentage. You can then use the skill through a command when it's fully charged.

I designed my Jagen as a support unit. He has low growths, but you are still given a reason to use him. He supports the most characters out of any other unit, has a skill that grants Atk+3 to all allies within two spaces, which helps in Hard Mode especially and all but one of the units he supports join in Chapter 1.

I think if its about clerics vs troubadours you should take into account putting them on advantage/disadvantage. For example a Troubadour will stay mounted and have more movement but it also could have weaknesses against horseslayers etc. Usually this does not really matter in Vanilla FE tho. But it can be put in mind for creating a hack.

I get that this is a 2.5 year-old video, and as such people probably won't see this, but I wanted to add on to what you were talking about in the "How Should I Design Soldier Stats?" section, specifically about Class Fantasy. I think anytime you're looking at a class for these types of games, even before designing characters, you always gotta ask, "What's the point of this?", or "What does this provide that others don't?" Now this doesn't *just* mean gameplay-wise, aesthetics and themes also play a role, but obviously the former is considerably important. So what do soldiers give us? Gameplay-wise, they gives the niche of a lance-using "master" class in the same vein of swordmasters and berserkers, and aesthetically, there's the somewhat underutilized niche of a regular-ish soldier among knights, lords, dragons, and mages. So there's definitely a place that exists for soldiers, it's just digging deeper into that groove. The main issue that arises is that of stat spread, since if swordmasters and berserkers act as the epitome of their chosen weapons (think berserkers' raw power and swordmasters technique and speed), it would follow that they would be the ultimate offensive all-rounders. Good attack, good speed, good bulk , the "paragons of balance." The issue is that mercenaries already have that kind of niche, stat-wise, and since they're already combat-oriented infantry units, weapons being the only difference between the two doesn't feel great, even if 1-2 javelins are significant. Other infantry pairs with similar stats already have some way of differentiating themselves, such as pirates/brigands' terrain expertise versus fighters, or thieves having more utility than myrmidons. So what would be the difference between the two jack of all trades? How I see it, this is a good time to turn to aesthetics. The mercenary's a combatant of many battlefields, having been in a wide variety of situations compared to the soldier, thus making them more "adaptable." The soldier's instead "reliable;" they're the guys who've been training their entire lives to do one set of things, and that's keeping their spear forward and sticking it in another guy. They also play better in a group than a mercenary, whose job by nature means relying more on oneself. With that in mind, I think some interesting directions would be the soldier having a niche of high accuracy or formation fighting among melee infantry, such as by gaining a flat accuracy bonus, or a positioning bonus similar to what halberdiers get in Engage. Mercenaries instead could make better use of terrain, or maybe even some way of circumventing the weapon triangle, either by limited access to non-triangle weapons (bows, fists, daggers), or a skill or somesuch. Either way, it'd be a neat niche in of itself for a T1 class to have, and give soldier more breathing room. TL;DR, Make soldiers accurate all-rounders that a player can almost always rely on, and make them in a game where that reliability is important, as with Rutger in FE6. Hopefully all that above made sense.

While Engage has reclassing, it doesn't hurt the game as much as 3H because of how optional it is. 3H is like a build-a-unit sandbox and the maps have to accommodate for that because the devs have 0 clue what you're gonna do with anyone, even if they know certain units gravitate to certain classes. The maps have to be open ended so any army CAN win. Engage, like a classic FE game, has everyone start in a certain class (lets say armor knight), and you can promote them to the advanced version of that class (General) or a similar class with some tradeoffs (Great Knight). The option of second sealing to a completely different class also exists, but that's an intentional deviation which you can completely ignore, and since skills are inherited from emlems rather than classes you never need to put anyone in dumb classes to gain strong skills. This allowed the devs to design good varied maps around the units and emblems the game gives you. On my second playthrough I've only reclassed Alear, Jean and Anna, but the playthrough feels very different because I'm using different units, and I have to figure out how this different set of tools can beat the challenge compared to what I had my first time.

Am I allowed to make the normal mode pretty Ironman friendly and then have hard mode have more unfair things? Like ambushes and Kaga stuff Since on hard mode I kinda expect the players to be here to challenge themselves and like, not be too upset with restarting the whole story after losing a map during Ironman Or maybe like, have hard mode which is still Ironman friendly and then just ‘unfair’ or ‘cruel’ mode lol

In your other videos, when you say ‘ironman,’ I have always thought you meant the mad lads that will turn off the leveling up mechanic and do no resets. I’m kinda new to the Fire Emblem community lol, and the only person I know who plays it is pretty obsessed is.

Me, who wants to make a turn-based map-based strategy game that isn’t FE so I do have to kinda use tutorials

Personally, I believe if you do go the dual weapon armor knight route that you lock cavaliers to single weapon types like in the Tellius series. It helps them stand out if you make armor knights the only t1 class that can use more than one weapon type.
