There is something to learn from every hack I've played, but I'd say the ones in this video are likely to hammer home key points better than others I've played. Again, this is not a list of my favorites or what I consider the "best" hacks (although there is some overlap on my personal top list), but a list of hacks you should play for research purposes.

Im still early in the planning and writing phase but its been so much fun to learn from your design videos and delve into the history of fire emblem rom hacks! Keep on making content!
These recommendations are great. I've been focusing too much on making my hack that I forgot to look at other people's work. I'll definitely check these out
I think Code of the Black Knights would be interesting as well - it is very buggy, but it is so loaded with stuff? Like I haven't seen a FE hack with that much content before. That and the fact that every single character death can impact the story and epilogue(which makes it very understandable why it's so buggy) are very interesting and not something you see too often. The Sun God's wrath for it's interesting balance is also something that hackers could look into - just for like innovational inspirations(and the three-tier promotions, exp-drop on promotions, that kind of stuff, very interesting). I wouldn't put them above any of the hacks you mentioned here though, but if someone's looking into making a non-conventional Fire Emblem romhack, I think those would be good to look at. (just put this here since bloodlines isn't really playable anymore, as you said, and having some playable alternatives might be nice)
Thanks for sharing! I haven't tried Code of the Black Knights yet, but I've heard it is high concept and tries a lot of unique objectives and takes on FE maps.
@@nadnap most maps are usually "kill boss in x turns", "route" or "escape" with a few outliers, HOWEVER, almost EVERY single map has a twist to that, which is very nice and almost all of them have side-objectives or hidden conditions that can alter the story(same with recruitment), and many have optional things for the players to use to their advantage while also quite a few have certain gimmicks that the enemy can use to their advantage but they're always very well-explained too. it's like the fe-formula but perfectly spiced up, tbh, not perfectly balanced, though, but very innovative and creative
I second the Code of the Black Knights point so much -- although I didn't find it significantly buggy. It has so much creative stuff and thought put into it; it's really interesting and shows how sophisticated a FE8 rom hack can get.
I was all into your ideas until you mentioned Vision Quest. Smh that hack is garbage. You need to play a REAL man's hack, like Ostian Princess. Now THERE is a legendary, top tier hack. Not these filthy full customs made by amateurs, smh.
the first 10 chapters are meant to be a lyn mode style prologue, so it makes sense you don't get a convoy for that part not getting it before fucking chapter 7 of the main story is bad design

Surprised Elibian Knights wasnt mentioned. It was one of the first hacks that focused on originality over trying to make a FE 7 clone
I haven't played EN in what feels like a decade, but it's def cool to see what can be done with eventing.

I really tried playing The Last Promise, but when I read that you dont get a convoy until ch17 and I was only on ch7 I dropped it like a dead fish.
