Jan and Don Get Out
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 พ.ค. 2021
Jan Watson and Don Powell are two old friends who live in different parts of the country exploring different parts of the country together whenever we can.
We will be hiking, trekking and wild camping in the UK taking in the views, locations and many oddities along the way. Part of our mission is to show you fantastic places by only using public transport and our feet.
Along the way we’ll be trekking the full length of the Wales Coast Path, camping and hiking in the Lake and Peak Districts and wild camping in many different locations. We’ll show you where we were, where we are going and how we got there.
We are not professionals so expect, humour, mistakes and a lot of trial and error.

New Mills Gas Circular - Peak District Walks
Mid-camp,Don discovers he has ran out of gas, provoking an unexpected hiking mission to New Mills to replenish supplies.
Starting at Chinley the lads explore the moorland road high up in the hills with views of Manchester, Liverpool and the Welsh mountains before descending into Birch Vale for the first time.
The journey to New Mills is continued along the Sett Valley Trail, where they check out a random mountain bike trail. Once in New Mills they look for gas and get lunch whilst watching some innovative energy creation.
Setting out from New Mills they follow the River Sett until deviating inland to be confronted by a defiant chicken. However once past this obstacle they soon meet another as the path is closed.
This forces a diversion up to Furness Vale and past the Peak Forest Canal. After a further bit of field walking they reach Brierley Green where they encounter a 125 year old pony.
The final section takes them back in to Chinley and then on to the campsite... but was the mission a success?
Jan enquires about the whereabouts of Don's chopper, and Don gets warmed up by a horse.

Camera is a bit naff. Picture keeps jumping
Nice one guys! I just got back from the Peak District last weekend. I had never done proper hiking before, so I walked from Edale train station towards Barber Booth around the next booths and up to Grindsslow Knoll. But everyone seemed to come down from there. I nearly reached the top but the rocky ledges you have to climb up prevented me. Even at 6ft 2, skinny and only 40, I struggled to reach up with my hands and feet, yet it was so much easier coming down, I felt like a right wimp when I did! 🤦♂🤦♂🙄🙄😆😆 At least I got to the top of Mam Tor, even though that's a lot easier and has a path straight up it. The Rambler Inn looked good. But I went to the Old Nags head, nice ales there, fish n chips in beer batter and Bakewell tart with custard went down well. ☺☺ Great video BTW. 👍👍
Nice one, mica hardware on albion Road would have had gas, but enjoyable walk, a tad muddy though. The chips looked good.
The first time we ever went to New Mills I bought gas from that hardware shop, but totally forgot about that on the day. I think the chips were a big distraction!
It was the same kind of gas that you gave us when we visited the bees.
13 miles for a bag of chips…………..& no gas 😂
Hey Steve, it was quite funny, but not that unusual for us. We did 19.2 miles for fish and chips on the Cardigan to Newport stretch of the coast path! But yes no gas, couldn't believe it, luckily Jan had just enough left to tide us over for the rest of the trip.
@@jananddongetout Planning to do the Ceredigion Coast Path walk next June ( inspired by your good selves)
Steve, that’s such a great section. Never too far away from a bus route if it goes wrong, beautiful places like Aberaeron and Llangrannog for a pint, and Mwnt - brilliant for a swim. A great mix of wilderness and civilisation, just right. Enjoy!
Stunning views of the Peak District countryside, absolutely beautiful
We agree!
I’m from England and I’ve stayed in trefin about 5 times because my dad mate has a house there what a place it is!
Nice one Toby, I’d love to get back there for a proper visit and spend some time there. It’s a great place.
Many years back, when I was a parttime fireman, we had a gorse fire at Pwll Deri, A colleague and I spent the night there while the rest of our crew went home, we stayed to make sure the fire didn't start up again. lying down in the heather was really comfortable. We took it in turns to have a snooze.
Bloody hell David, that sounds a bit intense and amazing. You could have done with all the rain that we had, and we could have done with those dry conditions!
Nice one lads...but would have liked to have seen you back at camp getting a brew on and cooking some food! 😄😄👍👍
Thanks, it would be nice but it was getting a bit dark for that once we got back to camp!
@@jananddongetout I'm hearing you, thanks all the same for an interesting walk.
GREAT TO SEE YOU BOTH.
Thank you, good to be back!
Good to see you out again, great stuff.
Thanks Pete, and thanks again with the help for the interview - it's all paying off good!
Nice to see you back out lads.
Thanks popplewolf, it's been a while
Welcome back chaps 🍺
Thanks Steve, bit of a rainy one that!
Thanks guys loved your video. I absolutely loved this walk when I did it but disaster by the last bridge, literally just before Borth Station, there was a big herd of mummy cows with their babies blocking me getting over the bridge, as I'm terrified of them, I turned back and walked 4 miles back to previous village to catch the bus instead of my intended train from Borth 😂 couldn't believe it. Since returned to do that bit again and thankfully cow free 😂
Not good, you did the right thing there, they can be unpredictable at that time. Fortunately they only followed us.
Great reminder of one of my many favourite walks on THE WCP. Gorgeous views. Tricky for me as large oak in leaf fallen over the high path by river. Very tricky to climb over as such a big tree. Thanks guys great video 😊
We loved all of this, apart from the uphill detour we took due to the sign being removed, I'm sure that was what killed my leg. A very varied section of the path but with a good pub at Tre'r-ddol
Well done guys. I've done that one, but thankfully not in that heat with a heavy pack on.👏 Don't blame you for missing Dinas head out, but if you haven't already, it's well worth going back to do, it's stunning 😊 Thanks for great reminder of beautiful walk.
One day we'll get around to it... as well as sticking our feet in the thing that we missed in 'INSTANT DOG BALLS'!
Loved watching. Thanks for sharing. I've almost finished the WCP myself but this walk is one I missed out due to bad weather so returning in the summer to do. Can't wait. Had a little chuckle when the sub titles got things wrong, my favourite was, one of you said "In St Dogmaels " which was interpreted as "INSTANT DOG BALLS" 😂 Donner meat was DYNAMITE wrap 😂 Thanks again for fab vid, looks incredible ❤
Oh you can't beat a classic bit of TH-cam auto subtitling, we watch these back with them on every time! Hope you've done this walk by now.
its not duke in field as is lords, ladies and dukes. its said as duck - in - field. a duck in a field. not the duke of earl in a field. DuKiNfeild!
Well of course I know that now it's too late! Haha!
Great to see these pictures. I was there in October 2019 finishing off my walk from Basingwerk Abbey near Holywell to Bardsey. This brought back lots of memories. Thanks!
Wow, that Pilgrim's Way looks quite meandering before you hit the north Llyn. All all of those view along the peninsular are just spectacular.
@@jananddongetout It's well worth doing. It took me ten days in stages from May to October. The trip over to Bardsey at the end was brilliant.
We'd love to get over to Bardsey, especially if there was any way of doing an overnight stay to look at all of the stars in that clear sky.
@@jananddongetout The boat trip over was £30 per person when I went and you can book accommodation on Bardsey in one of the cottages. There are quite a few up for rent if you look on the Bardsey Island site. They are quite basic but it's well worth the visit.
Basic is no problem for us! We will have to check that out, thanks Brian.
Really enjoying this series - many thanks! I have just walked from St Dogmaels to Strumble Head, a beautiful section, your vids are encouraging me to go back for the rest. One question. I assume you followed the PCP heading inland just before Gwbert. Is it possible to walk along the coast past Cardigan Island? I stayed at Poppit YHA with a fantastic view of the island and would love to walk out to the closest point on the mainland
Hi there apologies for the delay, life has been busy away from the channel. Unfortunately there is a big farm park on that corner overlooking Cardigan Island so you would have to pay to get in to access the head, but you can feed farm animals and enjoy a cafe.
@jananddongetout Thanks for getting back to me (no need for apols obvs!). What a shame you have to pay to access that little bit - luckily there's a whole other world of wonders before and after!
Brilliant, thanks guys. Great fun!
Thanks Peter - glad you enjoyed
This is a superb walk. Remember saying "bloody hell" just when you did at that last rise.
Indeed, 15 miles done at that stage and then a further 4 miles to Newport. It just keeps coming and coming! It was too hot when we did it.
The iron fence on the other side of the aqueduct in Marple is fairly new, that didn't used to be there. Just used to be a huge drop on that off side I suppose because no one would be expected to be on that side as it is not a path. I always remember being tempted to jump from the path to the other side when I was a kid but never had the bottle to do it.
Finally looked at the pic of aqueduct with no fence - that looks bloody scary - no chance! Give yourself a pat on the back for not attempting that one.
Had to go up their for bronze dofe in yr9
Did they make you do it wearing a huge heavy rucksack?
Yep, not fun
Great watch boys, Just looking at walking this section with my brother, thinking of splitting it in two, would you say there is any suitable wildcamping spots ? Don you are very Partridge at times, love it 👍🏼
A-ha! That’s a tricky one Steve as most of the terrain slopes down towards the sea. Somewhere around Ceibwr Bay looks like the best bet and it’s around half way. Or there may be a spot after you come up from the Witches Cauldron but looks more uncertain. Use bing maps to switch between aerial view and OS map. Yes there is a natural bit of Partridge in there, other times I just get carried away. Don
Thanks for taking the time to reply, much appreciated 👍🏼
No worries Steve
Really enjoying this trail, although could be renamed, the trail of a thousand squeaky gates! Thank you
Oh yes - and what a variety of gates, plenty to enjoy! - Don
I Strumbled (getit???!) across your channel via the algorithm. So glad I did. I've so far watched your journey from St Dogs to Trefin. I'm planning on doing the Pembs coast path, probably next year as I lived there most of my life. We moved to Abercastle from Derbyshire when I worra lass and I've since lived in Abereiddy, St.D's,Solva. Now in Crumarthen. I'm off to Trefin later to visit famalam. I was yelling to head for Trefin instead of having to walk up that hill! I'm looking forward to bingeing on all your other vids.. especially the Peak District. Thank you so much 😊
@gromlynne3550 Wow you are so lucky to have lived in both of those beautiful areas, so our channel is ideal for you then! I'm currently still working on a plan to escape London to be nearer the Peak District as there are just no real hills down this way. I didn't mind how we got to Trefin as long as we could get to the pub after that huge walk. Glad you enjoyed Strumbling across the channel - Don
Lovely walk, you lost me on the bit from Bathem gate to the Chesterfield Road, but soon picked it up again, Rushup Hall do very nice cream teas. Nice to seeyou getting out as always, thanks for posting. Looking forward to #51
Hi Pete, another good walk, glad you enjoyed. So with the cream teas, is that the café that is mentioned on the Peak and Northern Footpaths Society by Rushup Hall?
@@jananddongetout that's the one
Mystery solved - although looking at the website it looks like it is closed now, unless they've not updated it since lockdown. Don.
@@jananddongetout I'll have to go and look now. It was called the no drive cafe, just catered for walkers, easy distance from the rush up to mam tor path.
Penbryn was used at the Ending of the bond film They definitely didn’t film the North Korea start in Penbryn
Yes Trystan you are correct. I’ve now found out that the surf scenes were filmed on Peahi Beach in Hawaii, but I’ve now found out that they emerge on a very similar beach to Penbryn which is Holywell Bay in Cornwall. Penbryn is used for the closing sequence but no idea where it is supposed to be geographically. I’ll add an amendment to the description. Don

well done boy's 👍
Thanks Steve - that was a brilliant walk, and the chips were lovely - recommended! Don
Currently doing this walk and it really is a destroyer of knees! The decent's are murderous, at the end of a day's walking, setting up camp is agony😂
Indeed Martin! Did you get the wind coming round from Ramsey?
@@jananddongetout No, winds weren't a problem. If I was to advise anyone doing this walk, young or old, is to make sure you take and use walking poles. I honestly don't think I'd be able to do it without them. The jarring the knees take when tackling descents is unlike anything I've experienced on a trail before.
I absolutely agree Martin - sticks make the world of difference with a heavy pack on. We will be back out to continue our coast path route very soon. Don
Another excellent walk with plenty of geese, I guess the canal authorities will have rescued the car by now. Looking forward to the next instalments.

Ford Hall was originally built in apx 1222 and was your wood frame long house then in 1300's rebuilt in stone in the classic medieval 'E' shape. The majority of this beautiful building was taken down and rebuilt in the 1700's for the occupant to show off their wealth and be so called fashionable, then part of that was dropped and rebuilt in the late 18th century but not visible from the road, so the 'Hall' is now three distinct different building era's and has since been split into three separate dwellings. Such a shame the medieval hall did not remain intact as would have been quite something to behold, now, all that is left is the east wing that you passed :-(
Such a shame about all those damn toxic chemtrails poisoning our land and wildlife...not to mention people
Well, we make sure we do our bit for the environment using only public transport and walking, as well as picking up other people’s litter.
Thnks lads, enjoyed that though lost my bearing in Chapel with all those new housing estates, what a shame! I use to live there, 20 years ago. Just to note, next time you walk that way. As you left Ford Hall, passed The Chestnut Centre (that was), cross Sheffield road, the road you took towards Edale, just on your right there, you passed an ancient megalithic site, 'Mag Low'. That part of the Peak District is full of such sites. Will trace an on line map for you, will add extra interest to your videos and possibly gain more views as not many seem to incorporate them and is a growing interest in the old world.
Hi there, thanks for the feedback, we usually point out as much as we know about on the routes as we go, but extra info appreciated. If you are able to do a map that would be grand. jananddongetout@gmail.com. We did visit a 4500 year old burial mound and an Iron Age hill fort coming up soon.
