- Join an ailing Jan and Don as they attempt a circular walk from their new campsite in Chinley to visit Cracken Edge on the side of Chinley Churn.
Having recently completed a section of the Wales Coast Path the lads are still run down as they tackle the steep ascent up to Cracken Edge. Having made it to the top and a bit out of breath, the lads look for a way up to the inviting trig point of Chinley Churn, but sadly there is no access.
Cutting their losses they head back to the edge to survey the many quarries that line Cracken Edge, gazing over the ruins of buildings and a winding mechanism that operated on an incline slope.
With the wind getting up and a bit of a chill settling in Jan and Don take refuge for lunch in a charming old shelter. Back on the top and getting views of Manchester Airport they come across another set of quarries before turning for the descent.
On the way down, bench of the day is found offering views over to Combs Moss, South Head, Mount Famine and the southern Edge of Kinder. From here the lads spot flashing lights in the valley and proceed onwards to investigate, Don gets too distracted by the view of Hayfield to capture it all.
Once at Peep O’Day they head back towards Chinley grabbing some free damsons and apples, and marvel at manicured hedges, a dead badger and some Star Wars memorabilia.
Back at Chinley, the lads celebrate with a cheap pint that goes wrong for Jan, but make new friends with an Indian Restaurant and emerge with a feast to take back to the tent.
No bad for a day’s walk.
Jan explains why he cannot participate in skateboarding and Don misses a tractor rally.
Glad you enjoyed your stay in Chinley, enjoyed your Cracken edge walk and look forward to seeing you again soon.
If the weather is good we can go through the large hive.
We had a fantastic time last visit and can't wait to get back and we would love to do a proper survey of the large hive - when do the bees finish overwintering? I bet you're both looking forward to the next video.
Well done boy's another cracking vid . can i ask do you use a gps or just paper maps .
Hey Steve, we are pretty basic so we use maps for navigation, but I do track the routes using a Garmin Forerunner 35 watch which I bought in Aug 2019. For the maps in the videos I use Bing maps because it has Ordnance Survey maps as one of the options - always good for planning the walks.
