    Would you say farming nowadays is strictly a complete money making business? It seems that’s it’s all about crops and pheasants. Bird wise,hedge cutting takes away berries which birds etc would feed upon in winter. So maybe thick hedges would support birds in the breeding season but they may find it very difficult to survive the winter?? Anyway it’s evident how bad it is out there in the countryside, sad fact is it’s happening without each generation noticing, I’m sure you rather will say there were more birds around in his youth .

    £5.33/acre? So what £13/hectare? I'm assuming that's just diesel cost which would make sense. When calculating drilling cost you should also factor in depreciation, wearing parts, seed, labour, spraying cost - glyphosate and pre ems, pre drilling cultivation and rolling (if any).

    Looking at the soil sticking to the tractor wheels, have you examined a tractor with rubber tracks instead of wheels? There is a video somewhere of a Gloucestershire farm (who also has a Claydon) who thinks tracks rather than wheels make a big difference on the farm.

    • @Timscotteswoldfarm
      @Timscotteswoldfarm ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, thank you! No, all 3 fields were bean stubble. We simply tickled them at 1’’ with NZ. Just to get seeds to chit. That was in Sept. Heatwave. Next video will just explain this point as few people have got in touch to ask : D

  • @jameswardle7977
    @jameswardle7977 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video I’m in the process of trying to go down the strip till system. Had a sumo dts drill some wheat into 1/2 field then plough and combination the other half the strip till looks way better and less than half the establishment costs. I’m looking at buying a used Clayton hybrid. So I’m really interested in your results. It just justifying 30+k for 150 acres. Keep up the videos 👍

    • @Timscotteswoldfarm
      @Timscotteswoldfarm ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, thank you so much your kind words and support. I’m really happy that other farmers like yourself are able to use our findings to help them reach decisions. The results were more obvious than we’d thought. I thought it likely they’d do the same yield but be cheaper (therefore generally better). In fact the results spoke for themselves. I have a new video dropping tomorrow (10th feb) which shows our first 2 days with the claydon we bought. I will explain, but we tickled surface with NZ then direct drilled. You will see the finish. Cost to establish was minimal but return was high. I see they are now offering some support from govt. and the report from DEFRA does suggest extra payment for DD. The strip till idea for airflow, strength in bands of crops makes sense. On the ROI, there are some £28,000 machines which are C. 12 years old. AMTEC have got some decent looking machines bit cheaper. Their residual value appears high and if more people go to strip till route, given the fact there is only a certain number that can be built, your value could remain high. To explain my point- hypothetically any 40k drill,C. £28k after 12 years means only £1,000 a year in cost. That wont take too long to justify from more consistent establishment, higher yield, lower input costs etc. especially if you drill 2 crops for payments / livestock etc as a way of regenerative farming.

      @@Timscotteswoldfarm I’ve been offered a 2012 stonepro one which is extremely tidy on good metal there wanting 31k for it at AMTEC. It’s not come in yet I’m also thinking of trying to do a deal on a straw rake in the deal. The biggest problem I’m having is convincing my father on the ethics of strip till. He’s very much plough and combi thinking. I’m going to show him your videos. 🤞🏻

      Hello Paul. I would like to yes. Recently been reading quite a few studies to get away from mono-cropping and start using the land in a more holistic way. Best option would be cover crop straight after harvest (which we needed the claydon drill to help us achieve) and then grazing it. The muck from those cattle would then save us a fortune on fertiliser costs. I love cows just need to get the infrastructure right first. Thanks for the comment!
