  • This harvest has to be done at night!
Grain harvest 22 continues as we move onto the Wheat.
Because of the continued heat we are having to cut during the morning and evenings and avoid cutting at midday. The risk of wildfire fire remains high!
With stubble fields clear, we can also test the @Sveaverken AB system- especially as we have a stubble rake [but not a rake] arriving in the coming weeks. Great test for the accuracy for the machine.

How did your barley yield on the poorer soils that was drilled with the Claydon?

Health wise it's much thicker and looks healthier than the Tine drilled stuff. Yield wise, the jury is still out, we need to review it - given the season has also been exceptional we will have to compare across the fields (lot of variables). i am just finishing our video on the claydon which will drop next week.
As a crop, it established in parts of our fields which historically never grew. We have some areas by a copse which it established into, likewise, there are some corners of c. 30m circumference which were always baron and large weeds took over. This year it has made it look like the rest of the field. The one field which is heavy brash and probably our worst field, it has provided a thick canopy and there is certainly some straw out there!. It's taken our poorer fields and brought them at least level with our other better performing fields. Both for coverage and yield.
You will see in the coming video that despite the rows, it has really bloomed out and looks thicker than the closer drilled stuff from the tine drill!
Spoke to a neighbour who has had a contractor use an the Amazone Cayena and the general yield appears C.2.25-2.5 T/Acre. As we were racing the rain and tipping, we haven't taken stock of what was actually pulled out the field and then we were rained off. Once we finish cutting the Claydon Barley we can then look back and decide how it did. Generally, if you look at my other video comparing the roots and leaves, it shows much healthier plants. Let us have a proper review and I will speak about the results in the coming week. Hope that helps.
