As one who grew up in Corvallis (1940-), watching and listening to the Toledo Hauler as it rumbled past the OSU campus and through town every day, I knew little about this rail line where it didn't run close to Highway 20. I am still hoping for a railfan trip or excursion train along this route some day.

At the south end of the West Side line, I'm sure there was a link between Monroe and Junction City, forming a closed loop, and enabling a direct route from Eugene north to Corvallis and McMinnville, etc. When and why was this track abandoned?

    • @SIDETRACKEDCHANNEL

A lot of the line is hard to get to where the majority of those projects would be taking place. They have already done their tie work for the year from Wren to Albany. Next years focus could be the section between Toledo and Wren but we shall see. If this is an aspect of railroading that would see keen interest from the community I can have a look at covering the project.

***Amendment*** - We strive to ensure that all information is researched properly in every film to ensure their accuracy. Sometimes though information comes to light after the fact such as in this film. After uploading I have had the fortune to get more in-depth information from one of the longtime members of the NVRR. The ALCOs are definitely on the way out but for now are only required to have their engine blocks disabled as part of the swap out deal with the CARB grant. The fate of the FP4s after this is still up in the air. They can be stuffed and mounted or sent for scrap. Only time will tell. Number 62's fate is also not certain at this time. There is hope the line will keep the unit running but being in California ...

They’re still at our yard just used for parts. Only the engines under the chassis are scrapped! The locomotives themselves are still sitting in our yard right now. Enjoy 70/72 and 62 as we still use them until it’s their time. I don’t know when they’ll be done but it’s going to be a few years or so still until then.

I doubt they can be. There is a similar situation that has happened with Genesee & Wyoming where they got carbon credits in exchange for scrapping old road power. This required the locomotive the locomotives to have their blocks drilled an engine disabled. Hard to find a home for a locomotive that does not run. But we shall see. Knowing California they will no doubt demand the locomotives to be scrapped.

*** Information Amendment *** A addition/correction has been brought to my attention in regards to the operation of the Baily branch in the latter years under the Willamette & Pacific. The siding at Alpine junction was still in place till the end of operations on the line south of Llewellyn Road. Crews would take the train and run around here before shoving up to Dawson as was the historical practice. In early 2004 remote units started be used on the job and shortly after the crew decided they preferred to shove all the way from Corvallis. Cars spotted on the main would still need to be hooked onto and shoved to Alpine Junction with spots for these customers placed on the way back to Corvallis. In the summer of 2004 the caboose carrying the caboose on a shove derailed and tipped over severely injuring the crew. This was the last time crews shoved from Corvallis as the practice would be banned. (Thanks to Lou Thelen for this extra insight.)

Originally this was part of the OE Mainline to Eugene. From Bowers Junction it would run south then southeast to Beaverton then Garden Home. At Garden home there was a junction for the line east to Portland and southwest to Tigard where the line would cross over the SP Tillamook line and head south as it still does today. When the PNWR was in operation that spur line from Bowers Junction was referred to as the Bendemeer District and there was a a customer in Bendemeer that took plastic pellets before the track was pulled up.
