Sailing Monastrell
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 28 มี.ค. 2011
I had this idea to dump the mortgage, but I lived in such an awesome spot, and was really difficult to give up!!
I don't remember exactly how I came up with the solution to my dilemma, but I decided to sell my home, buy a yacht in Europe and sail her back to Australia! That was in 2016.
Monastrell was in Greece, so it began there, & after preparing her and familiarising ourselves with each other, we set off together and slowly worked our way toward Australia, picking up different crew along the way. We explored some awesome places in the Mediterranean, visiting numerous countries and islands along the way to Gibraltar, where we launched the longest passage to date, sailing down the African coast to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, then crossing the Atlantic to Saint Lucia in the Caribbean! We had 2 seasons in the Caribbean before flying back to Australia late 2019, then Covid hit!..now I'm back🛫⛵️🏝☀️💪😁

This episode we get to explore more abandoned Leper colony buildings, but this time at Sanders Bay and Rust's Bay, where the Dominican Nuns cared for the lepers, and where the patients lived on Chacachacare. Again we keep an eye out for ghosts, and we take a dinghy ride to play with dolphins!! Blog credit: medium.com/@jlckcreative/the-ruins-of-chacachacare-island-part-1-2dcba3bdc021 Please like...

Bush fires in Trinidad🔥 & single handed buddy sail to stunning Chacachacare💪⛵️💨Ep63

Although I began very young and have sailed most of my life, most has been done on off the beach dinghies and cats! Big boat sailing/racing was done in harbours and coastal sailing around islands, with land always in sight! When I first began this adventure in Greece in 2017, it was rather daunting, it took time to build confidence in both myself, and Monastrell! But confidence and trust in eac...

Beautiful Scotland Bay, Trinidad😍⛵️Ep62

During the weekend Scotland Bay is a very good anchorage, but during the working week it's a fantastic anchorage!! One of the favourite things about the cruising lifestyle, or boating in general, is being able to put into practice boat handling skills! I developed many of them as a kid and teenager, so when I'm practicing them now, it takes me back to my childhood boating/sailing days, which I have very fond memories of⛵️😍!! Great to hear👌
Wonderful Video Bruce! I Love the way you catch the atmosphere of the landscape and combine it with beautiful music 🥰☀️
Thank you Silli for your kind words of encouragement🙏🏻🥰🤗😌
Video quality is very good but video views are very low. Because your channel and videos are not proper SEO optimized.
Ok. Thanks 🙏🏻😁
The apt james was way better but all boats are great in my opinion
I may be biased but personally I like the external look of the Buccoo Reef more, however from my observations the APT James has a better quality of finish🤔 But like you say both a great👌💪
Thats one of Sailing Millenial Falcon's videos - not original content !
Apart from them up the lighthouse, it’s all my original content😊
How did you fear during the Hurricane. Were you still in Trinidad
Thanks for asking, all good👌I was at Chacachacare, along with about 28 other boats that came down from Grenada!
@@bruce3077 great, hope to see some video of that
It's coming 😉😁
Love these vessels. Have travelled to the Channel Islands and France many times on InCat vessels. Condor replaced the UK Channel islands route with an Austal built design, not as good as the InCat originals
Cool, they are amazing vessels, I lived in Hobart for 30+ years, and actually saw Buccoo Reef leave for Trinidad😊
L👀Ks like an InCat from Hobart, Australia.. 🇦🇺
That’s exactly what it is👌😊
Hello, I am Norman from Germany, Berlin. I plan to,buy a boat when I am retiered, in around one year. I am interested in that model you have. Are you happy with this? Can you measure the lenght of the benchs in the cockpit. Is it 2 meter or less? Thank you for an answer. Best wishes for your tour, Norman
Hi Norman, apologies for the delayed response😌 That's exciting for you, I hope it's everything you imagine it to be! Will you just sail locally, or will you travel? No boat is perfect, but overall I've been very happy with Monastrell! She's nicely laid out, very comfortable to live aboard, fun to sail, and so far has kept me and others safe. Having said that, there are some things you need to look out for before buying! The cockpit benches are 170cm long and although it would be nice to stretch out fully, they are an acceptable length for 😊 All the very best to you😁
Hope the hurricane isnt treating you tooo bad bruce
Thank you, wev'e been very lucky with very little effect from it🙏🏻😌
When was that fire Bruce. We saw a smoke rating but thought it was a mistake. Totally oblivious
Hey Cyn, they were in March!
You’ve captured it so beautifully Bruce, the serenity of just us in a lone anchorage and the beautiful desolation of the leper hospital. What a fantastic day that was. Good friends having adventures together.
Thank you Cyn, it was a wonderful day for sure🙏🏻😁
Those interested in going with the fast ferry, please ensure you have meds to suppress nausea or motion sickness.
Good advice, the motion of the ferry when there is swell would definitely make some people nauseous👍😊
Hey maybe ill wave at you when youre sailing close to scotland bay..im usually in chaguaramas
Cool, I'll certainly make sure to wave back 👋😉😁
Did you see any ghosts. The word on the street is that island is haunted
I've heard that...but no ghosts...maybe they only come out at night😰🫣😄
@@bruce3077 you may have to camp on the beach at night to meet a few ghosts.
Hmmm..🥺🤔😨😅
Wow is right. Lucky bugger😽
It's an awesome spot Peter that seems to be a well kept secret🤫 A bit like Tassie was all those years ago😁
Super footage Bruce- captured its beauty. And great to meet you.
Thank you Cyn for your kind words 🙏🏻 Great to meet and hang out with you guys😊
Hi Bruce👋 Susan & Martin here on Shenemere. Great to see you on the water again & sharing your incredible footage🙏🏼 we really enjoyed hearing your voice again and following your adventures XO keep up the amazing work
Thanks guys for your kind words...it is nice to be on the water again for sure!! I've been enjoying your vids also👌😁 Where will you be for hurricane season?
Great spot…
It certainly is👌😁
Enjoying your videos Mate. Nice job on the keel and rudder. S/V Seaesta Blue (2009BO46)
Cheers, glad you’re enjoying them, and thanks for the positive feedback🙏😁
Nicely done why is the chest cam stuttering? wondering if you should try a faster microSD card in that camera?
I did explain in the description that I accidentally must have had the GoPro set to time lapse, then had to slow it down in editing, hence the stuttering😊 Hopefully that's what occurred, and not GoPro defaulting to time lapse on it's own😜
@@bruce3077 LOL I missed that - thank you for the video.. getting to terms with parking my 47foot as well. and have a tendency to back in.. love seeing how others do this stuff.
I don't pretend to be an expert, but as mentioned I do love the boat handling side of boating! At this dock I reverse in, because often there is a side wind that pushes the boat against the dock, so it's easier to leave it facing forward😊 I'm also interested in how others do it👌
And no wind….
No to little wind helps,...but I've done it before and since with wind! One time in the Med, it took 3-4 passes/attempts with an off dock quite strong wind, with not a soul around to help😅
Unassisted? You had a diesel engine! Next time try sailing in.
Next time has already passed, but I'd love to try that one 👌 Have you done it yourself?
Nice one Bruce, enjoyed the opening with boats I recognise launching. Big moment for you. What are your plans when you finally leave Trini?
Cheers Andrew, it was a huge moment! I have video of many more boats but not sure about Calypso🤔 I’m still planning to get into the Pacific, finances permitting, but in the meantime I’ll head north, maybe as far as Dominica, after I finalise a few things in Trini😊
Cool , that dinghy frame is a bit high , the wind will get under that in a blow , get it at deck level, much safer .
Totally agree David, I won’t be using it on passage, the dinghy usually sits upside down on the foredeck. I use the frame at anchor sometimes and the height means I can still open the hatch while getting some shade😊
Congrats mate
Cheers Jamie🍻😊
Gorgeous boat! Well done👏👏👏. Looking forward to your journeys. Fair winds.
Thanks Charles, she is gorgeous⛵️😍 I’m looking forward to some journeys too😉and I’ll be sure to share them here😁
Awsome Video Bruce! 😀This Island is absolutely amazing… trank you for sharing this adventure! 🙏🙏🙏

This is awful, did you see a name on the fishing vessel, someone could have lost their life by such reckless actions, at least none of you were hurt. Illegal fishing is just a form of piracy with the equivalent lack of concern for other people or their property.
Thank you🙏 No we didn’t see a name, it was very dark and they often were shining a spotlight directly at us! I agree, they were negligent to do what they did, especially to cut the net and leave without checking whether we were sea worthy still, or not!! Definitely lives were at risk!
Great job with the keel, not enough people pay attention to this joint.
Thanks for the positive feedback Mike🙏🏻😊 I agree, and I've seen some pretty dodgy things during my extended stay on the hard, in this boat yard! Fortunately overall it appears, from my observations, to be a minority of boats, but still disturbing that some people will use boats with obvious defects below the water line, but most disturbing when its an obvious keel issue😱
why would you not just take the shrink wrap off before stepping
Good question👍 because it provides great weather protection, and the deck area acts as a bit of a outdoor storage area and workshop while preparing the the boat😊
@@bruce3077 Are you planning on launching her soon? If not why did you step the mast? Just curious. Thanks for responding!
Yes, I sure am, I'm hoping to be ready to splash end of this, or early next week🤞😊
We had Keith and Paul on board our yacht last year for a week. You will be pleased to know he is as active as ever and puts us all to shame! He sold Alchemy to us and had a fabulous two years with the boat. Then we sold her and named our new yacht Alchemia, I’m sure Keith will spend time with us again this year. Safe travels to you. Ade
That’s sooo cool to hear, thanks for letting me know🙏😊he’s a lovely man!! Has he seen the video, do you know? Alchemy was a really nice boat, you did well to get her! Please pass on my best regards to both Keith and Paul when you next have contact😁
Great coastal cruiser but I would not head off into the big blue with that boat. The grids just let go! The hull skin alone is not sufficiently strong enough to carry the keel loads when healed over in a seaway. A little flex and the entire glued on pan comes off . Scary when the next shore is 1000 miles away
Thanks for your comment! That scenario would certainly be very scary, and fingers crossed I never get to experience it!! I would for sure prefer the grid to be completely tabbed to the hull instead of just glued, as was done during the repairs on Monastrell, however, the truth is, they don't just let go! Hundreds of Beneteaus, maybe thousands have crossed oceans/circumnavigated, most without grid issues. You would have to seriously beat the boat up/push it way too hard for too long, or have a serious grounding for that to occur! A big part of trouble free sailing is managing the boat well, eg maintenance, sailing to the conditions and within her limits, and your own capabilities. Would I personally take Monastrell down into the Southern Ocean? putting aside the uncomfortable freezing conditions... no way, but others have, without major issues! Personally I think production boats get a lot of disproportionate, unfair and unjustified criticism! During my researching of vessels to buy, considered by many to be capable of crossing oceans, I had to sift through threads scattered with negative comments, that as I've since learn't, were mostly from the misinformed, or obvious production boat haters! Even highly regarded blue water yachts have been broken, usually not because of the boat itself, but because of being pushed beyond their limits! Just the same as when purchasing a second hand car or house, it's important to understand what your'e looking at when buying a second hand boat! There will be obvious red flags staring you in the face, and other red flags that are less obvious, and often missed by untrained eyes! At the end of the day, passaging, no matter whether it's coastal, or open oceans, should be treated with equal respect, because the s#@t can hit the fan in either, in any boat! Happy sailing
Incredible, thanks for sharing. Coastguard is amazing, nice job staying calm and prayers 🙏🏾 for y’all.
Thank you for your kind words🙏😊 You’re right, coastguard are amazing, very appreciative for their assistance😌
Are they your daughters sunbathing
No, they were guests for the day from another boat😊
Just found your channel so thought we would have a look at your start and see you purchased in Greece. We are in Aus and taking two years to sail from the Caribbean home at the end of this year. Would prefer to buy in the Caribbean but the boat I’m really interested in is in Preveza. Don’t suppose you could share any knowledge on the process of buying over there and also transferring the rego? I’ve got a surveyor in mind but have no idea on brokers or lawyers etc. I’m going to have to meet the wife and kids in the Caribbean so am interested in the timeframe from buying to leaving the dock. Anyway if you get the time I’ll buy you a beer or 2 when we get to the Caribbean later this year!
That's awesome, I really enjoyed my time in the Southern Ioanian! Send me a DM on messenger perhaps (fb link in description) and if I can help I will😊
Can you PROVE it was an ILEGAL NETT Sir?
The fact that it wasn't lit up at night would possibly suggest something dodgy was going on🧐
Get well soon, we are glad you are safe.
Thank you for your kind wishes🙏🏻☺️
Surprised the fishing boat left you there
Yes, wasn't very considerate, to say the least 🤨
That's why I always fit a rope cutter before the propeller. The stripper or Gator roper cutter. It wouldn't prevent the problem with the keel, but it keeps the shaft free. Hopefully the keel is not damaged too much.
Yes, I agree! I have a rope cutter on my boat, and its been useful quite a few times!! The keel has already been removed and Tim has almost finished repairing it 👌😊
You were lucky. Could have been much worse. Maybe next time leave in daylight for the 80 mile passage to Grenada.
Very lucky!! I personally will leave during the day when I do the passage soon👌😊
There is NO WAY that shaft mount was secure before that happened. you are LUCKY that didnt hapoen at sea from hitting ANYTHING. And buy a Barracuda Line Cutter or other brand. You should never be in Fishing type waters or heavy mooring areas without a LINE CUTTER on your Prop Shaft. Spend $300 to save yourself. But back to my first point that was already an issue Guaranteed
and at the end seeing the rudder full of water ??? keep that boat at the dock boys.
I think it was probably secure, but a poor design in the first place! My boat Monastrell is a 2009 Oceanis 46, and the shaft extends from an integrated skeg, if thats the correct term🧐 I agree on the rope cutter, I have one on my boat, and has been used on several occasions!!
Hey mate, I am restoring a the same boat and rewiring the entire starboard side due to inverter fire and rebuilding the cabinets. Lots of work. I am trying to get photos of the bus bar wiring in the navigation station and so far been out of luck. Is there anyway you would mind sharing some picture of your yacht? This would really help me rebuild the cabinets to fit. I am enjoying your channel.
No problem, I’ll try and organise some for you over the next couple of days😊
Thank you so much. I really Appreciate that. I'm Australian also living in Florida at the moment@@bruce3077
Hey Jamie, if you send a dm via messenger, I'll get some pics to 😊
@@bruce3077 thank you mate. I sent you over a dm in facebook.
Cool, I'll reply shortly and send some pics for you😊
Thanks for posting the video! I can see the downhaul, and that there is an arm that works to keep the mast turned in-line with the boom. Then there's also a vang/kicking strap. Is that adjustable from both sides? There seem to be a lot of lines on the forward half of the boom. Am I missing anything?
Yes, all those lines are adjustable from both sides, and are continuous, so you never have to even up anything😊
Just learning the P.T. here. I'd love a consult if you're open to it. First question. In this video, on beam reaches, you often have the leward daggerboard up. Why is that?
Yes I’m happy to help in any way I can😊 The reason I have the leeward board up is to mainly reduce drag, however I leave the windward one down to help pop a hull in marginal wind strengths!
@@bruce3077 interesting! Do you know the physics of why the windward dagger down would help lift that hull? More than just its buoyancy presumably.
