    SM, Holy cow. I would've shit myself. You kept your composure!!! Well done.

      Thank you🙏🏻😊 I think you'd probably be okay though. It was amazing how the survival instincts kicked in, and one of them is to remain calm , stop the negative brain chatter, to allow it to function effectively! On reflection though, in the moment of discovering we were sinking, the thought of maybe having to get in to a life raft was a little scary!

    Ocean going...with a spade rudder??? Nuts!!

    • @bruce3077
      @bruce3077  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I'm pretty sure if we did some research, we would discover that the majority of boats cruising oceans are production boats, and most of them would have spade rudders? Also Ocean racing yachts, such as the Imoca 60, have twin spade rudders.
      I'm not saying because they are common it is the better way to go, but merely if it was a big problem, manufactures would be going the other way, I would like to believe!
      ie. The renowned blue water brand Hallberg-Rassey brand has gone twin spade rudders, and claim it's a better performer and safer!

      A good debate to have I reckon🧐😁

      @@bruce3077 nah it’s accountants that make everything. Bolt on keel and a spade rubbers saves cost and weight.

      An orca encounter on the Iberian coast resulted in the loss of a yacht that had a skeg hung rudder. The skeg was ripped off resulting in a gash in the hull no bilge pump could compensate for. In this video the leak came from a bent P-bracket and possible keel damage, the spade rudder was apparently intact and not the cause of the problem.

    Hell Bruce, that sure was a close call and lucky the coast guard were able to rescue you guys in time. I can imagine the repairs will be interesting to sort out. The main thing is you are all ok and the boat was saved.

    • @bruce3077
      @bruce3077  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks David, it sure was a close call! It wouldn't have taken too much more of a water ingress to force us into the life raft! I doubt we would have been able to keep up with the bailing! There was a lot of infrastructure under water, so it'll be a major overhaul, I would think!

    That's why I always fit a rope cutter before the propeller. The stripper or Gator roper cutter. It wouldn't prevent the problem with the keel, but it keeps the shaft free. Hopefully the keel is not damaged too much.

    • @bruce3077
      @bruce3077  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I agree! I have a rope cutter on my boat, and its been useful quite a few times!! The keel has already been removed and Tim has almost finished repairing it 👌😊

    Wow yes that is the propeller strut they are two types some older boats had straight ones think of a piece of flat bar stock that penetrates the hull but most later boats used T shaped ones regardless of the style they get glassed into the hull laminate the later T shaped ones offer more surface area and are an upgrade over the older straight kind this is why full keel boats are preferred for offshore sailing because the propeller and rudder are more protected and on full keel boats there is no propeller strut to fail because the prop just exits thru a cutlass bearing

    • @bruce3077
      @bruce3077  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, definitely a weakness! Monastrell has a cutlass bearing built into a mini skeg, I'd call it, along with a rope cutter on the propeller shaft, which definitely helps also when something is trying to rap itself around the shaft!

    Fishing net encounters are common in Central America but not seen or experienced anything like that! You were at least fortunate that you were in seas where a coast guard service exists. Could have been a lot worse.

    • @bruce3077
      @bruce3077  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you 🙏🏻😌 We very much felt lucky that it happened where it did, and yes, it definitely was very close to being a lot worse! A little bit bigger damage crack and we probably wouldn't have kept up with the bailing!

    There is NO WAY that shaft mount was secure before that happened. you are LUCKY that didnt hapoen at sea from hitting ANYTHING.
    And buy a Barracuda Line Cutter or other brand.
    You should never be in Fishing type waters or heavy mooring areas without a LINE CUTTER on your Prop Shaft.
    Spend $300 to save yourself.
    But back to my first point
    that was already an issue
    Guaranteed

      and at the end seeing the rudder full of water ???
      keep that boat at the dock boys.

    • @bruce3077
      @bruce3077  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it was probably secure, but a poor design in the first place! My boat Monastrell is a 2009 Oceanis 46, and the shaft extends from an integrated skeg, if thats the correct term🧐 I agree on the rope cutter, I have one on my boat, and has been used on several occasions!!

    A Y bracket on the prop shaft might have stopped this , Single bracket dont have mush side ways strength ( I found to my sorro many years ago ) That model Bene are a good sea going model , Delivered one up tp Tonga , Nice motion .

    • @bruce3077
      @bruce3077  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think your'e right! If the boat is repaired, I wouldn't be surprised if they beef up that area!
      My boat is also a Beneteau, an Oceanis 46, a 2009 model, which, in my opinion, is a good sea going boat. I've crossed the Atlantic once so far, and hope to do the Pacific soon!
      Where did you start your delivery from?

    This is awful, did you see a name on the fishing vessel, someone could have lost their life by such reckless actions, at least none of you were hurt. Illegal fishing is just a form of piracy with the equivalent lack of concern for other people or their property.

    • @bruce3077
      @bruce3077  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you🙏 No we didn’t see a name, it was very dark and they often were shining a spotlight directly at us!
      I agree, they were negligent to do what they did, especially to cut the net and leave without checking whether we were sea worthy still, or not!! Definitely lives were at risk!

      At the moment I like the music, maybe that will change with time🧐
      Out of curiosity, who are "you people"?
