Does Custom Tuned Suspension Really Make A Difference?
มุมมอง 2.3K22 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Today we head to Dirt Labs suspension in Longmont, Colorado to get my Marzocchi Bomber Air tuned for the first time. We start off at Dirt Labs with Luby, the owner and founder, to learn about why you might get your suspension tuned. Then, we meet up with Dave, the suspension tech, who explains exactly what he did to my particular shock. Lastly, we head out for the first lap on the new tune and ...
Do You Actually Need A Long Travel MTB To Ride A Bike Park?
มุมมอง 17K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
Over the past few weeks, I have received quite a few comments about what bike I ride at bike parks. Through reading these comments, it seems that there is an idea out there that you will be doomed at a bike park without a long-travel trail bike or even a full downhill bike. In today's video, I discuss this topic and showcase that you can still have a great time at a bike park even a short trave...

    DHR2 tips into turns quickly, it's quite unstable, I'm guessing the HR3 behaves the like a front tyre where it's more square and stable?

    High roller 3 as a rear maybe? Assegai front? Or count intuitive

    • @PeterJamison
      @PeterJamison วันที่ผ่านมา

      That would be pretty counter intuitive in my opinion, but I can see situations where High Roller 3 front and rear would work awesome, particularly in very loose/wet conditions.

    I cant believe youre just riding that tempo at trestle for fun. What are your suspension settings, are you running it very stiff?

    • @PeterJamison
      @PeterJamison 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The Tempo rips the bike park! Carries such good speed and with good line choice can handle everything Trestle has to offer. For suspension, I have a bomber air with 180 PSI and a 0.5 spacer, and a Z1 with 2 spacers and 76 PSI. At 175 pounds that is not super stiff by any means, but ramps up enough that I hardly bottom out. I will break down more specifics in my Tempo bike check which will be dropping soon!

    What is your favorite front tire?

    • @mangoshake
      @mangoshake 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Just like you, the DHR II. I just swapped from a stock MaxxTerra EXO DHR II to a MaxxGrip DD Assegai on my Canyon Spectral. Before that, on my old bike, I ran a MaxxGrip DH Casing DHR II. Sure, the MaxxTerra DHR II had a tendency to slip on loose dust, but the Assegai just threw me off with how numb it felt. Like, I want to like and keep the Assegai until it wears down. It's grip incarnate. But it just feels numb, and the fact that it doesn't leave tire marks on the trail means that the Assegai likes to ride on top of the soil and stick to it like tape, as opposed to something that grabs onto the soil, like velcro. Weird analogy, but I think you get it. With the MaxxGrip compound, the DHR II is velcro. You can hear the side knobs grab and rip through the soil, and you can feel the ripping sensation through your hands. For me, its one advantage over the Assegai is that it's a communicative tire. It lets you feel the trail condition and adapt accordingly. It allows you to be precise. The Assegai relies more on bravery and trust, which I admit I lack, lol. So with this review, I'm definitely excited for the High Roller to start coming in with DD casing.

      @PeterJamison 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@mangoshake Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Based on what you have described, the new High Roller seems like it will fit your preferences perfectly.

    • @billydeewilliams8909
      @billydeewilliams8909 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Everyone loves the Assegai as a front, but the DHR is a great option too. I'm running 2.6 EXO+ MaxxTerra DHR front and rear on my 160/150 e-bike (with cush core), after having run DHR front/Dissector rear for a few months. Until I started converting my 150/130 trail bike into a quasi-park bike (currently 2.6 DD MaxxGrip Assegai front/rear with cush core, lol), it was DHR front/Rekon rear, which also performed great but in hindsight I think I'd have preferred to try the Forekaster on the rear, which I still want to try this winter/fall. But I'm not sure DHR front is going to last for me after trying the Assegai, which is just insanely confidence inspiring, so much so that I don't really care about the rolling speed. When you ran DHR front on the T.E.M.P.O, what did you have on the rear? I'm really interested in the High Roller 3 due to the incredibly loose and dusty conditions at my local parks, Dodge Ridge and Northstar. Too bad it's only presently offered in 2.4, but presumably there will be more soon. I'm so addicted to 2.6 wide tires I really wish Maxxis offered them in more DD/MaxxTerra for rear and EXO+/MaxxGrip for front. I personally haven't tried this combo of compounds/casings, but after watching/reading a ton of tire content this year, its definitely next on my list. I also want to try a faster rolling tire like even the Dissector in DD/MaxxGrip on the rear, but I'd rather not compromise on width. And after trying the DD/Grip Assegai front and rear at Northstar this weekend, I think it's a bit too much of a good thing (I'm going to stick with it for at least one more weekend tho), so I'm skeptical of using a pretty draggy tire like the DHR in Grip on the rear.

      @PeterJamison วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@billydeewilliams8909 When I had the DHR in the front on the Tempo, I also had it in the rear. For me the DHR as a rear tire is my baseline, and I hardly go away from it. That said, I have a DD Dissector 2.4 I am going to toss on this week as my DHR is on the way out. Glad you are enjoying the way a 2.6 feels for you!

    My 1st full suspension bike I blew out my Fox DPS. It was under warranty. The LBS sent it to Fox and Fox wanted to know my weight. At that time, I was 230lbs. They tuned it to my weight and it made a huge difference! My next bike has a Fox Float X. I never could get it feeling right. After 1 year, I sent it to Fox and they put a medium + tune, put a 1.0 spacer in it, and fully serviced it. It doesn't feel like the same shock. It rides much better. I'm definitely a believer in tuning suspension for your weight, riding style, and matching that up to the bike as well. My Stumpjumper Evo is very linear. Putting a larger spacer in gives it progression to bottom out which feels a lot better to me.

    Great topic to bring up. I wasn't a fan of the shock that came on my bike so I ended up buying the same model shock from Dak Norton that was custom tuned for one of his race bikes and it's probably the best upgrade I've ever made to a bike.

      Love to hear it! Which bike was it for?

      @@PeterJamison It's a Rockshox SuperDeluxe off his Devinci Wilson. It has a high speed rebound tune with a check valve. I couldn't find a stock tune like this for heavy springs (600lbs+) anywhere. I've run it on multiple bikes since and It's amazing.

    Hope you enjoyed this inside look of my trip down to Dirt Labs! The shock has been feeling sweet and I will share more in depth thoughts in my Tempo bike check which will be coming soon!
