How America's food system affects Type 1 Diabetics
We must change America's broken food system! The mismatch between what we produce and what we should eat ... What we need is a radical change in the food we produce and how that food is used. Too many people are getting diagnosed with Chronic illnesses and that number is only increasing. We must fix the food system - but the first step is learning what steps to take in your own life and your own household.

you can go from type 1 to type 2 and you can go from type 2 to being clear, diebtis is easy to treat just fasting a lone will help big time. its not a disese its an imbalance.
This is the most ridiculous statement I have ever read, I’ve read some really ignorant things over the years. You absolutely can NOT go type 1 to 2. Sure would be nice though.
@@brittanybarrett1326 my freinds wife had a stroke and after she was dignosed with type 1 dibetis now many weeks after leaving hospitol and after takeing insulin every day she has been downgraded to type 1 with no insulin.
Diagnosed type 1 today at 34 years old. I can already feel the frustration im about to experience, re learning my new self.
Karen, our fish have microplastics in them, every processed food has ultra processed corn and seed oils, we are all going to die, nothing is good for you except raw food and a boring diet. Live a little, have some sex, eat a good meal, life is short.
Are Jelly Beans considered to be Glucose Tablets?
No
No, but they would totally work as a “hypo cure”! I use jelly babies….
I was just diagnosed in July (age 28) and they also talked to me like I'd never be able to have carbs. I was extremely depressed for other reasons long before the DKA. When they told me I'd have to eat mostly vegetables for the rest of my life it just crushed me. At the time I was like so let me get this straight... my life was already pain and now you're telling me I can't have any of the foods that make life worth living? I was genuinely done. I actually tried to kms in the ER that first night. At one point the CDE I had asked why I was upset and I said because I'll never be able to have junk food again. I was hoping her response would be comforting and that she'd tell me I can have junk foods in moderation as a special treat but all she said was "oh honey but that stuff is not doing anything for you" I was so mad. Like really? Y'all can't just tell the suicidal girl she can have one measly little potato chip if it makes her feel better? Not "doing anything" for you? Who tf thinks about food that way! I'm glad they sent me to a psychiatric hospital for another week because I met 2 other people there who had t1d too. Between them and the online community I discovered later I'm finally learning that I can still eat most things as long as I take enough insulin.
Yes absolutely!! They tend to scare you at the doctor but don’t worry - you can still eat the foods you love!

I went thru the same thing
First and foremost, grow a brain and stop being influenced by dumb shit people.
I wish there was a community near Northeastern Pa or we don’t know any. My 12 year old daughter has T1D
I bet there is!!!
Dont use. Flour for pizza base ! That turns to sugar as it hits your blood stream !
What do you use?
Blackbeans and cabbage until a dry thick paste!
@@AndrewRod-c5v oooo!!!
Samantha you’re calling it a split bolus but I think for all pumps they call it an “extended bolus” you’re the only one who says split bolus 😊
Ah yes! lol thank you! MDI people have to split bolus lol
Great video. You covered everything that I have to think about before eating pizza. One thing I never thought about was this idea of frozen processed versus a fresh one. For myself what I do is try to eat it for lunch instead of dinner and go for a walk afterwards. Thanks for covering many of the variables involved.
Same!!! I love eating pizza at lunch!
Does coffee spike your sugar?
No, not black coffee
I 2 had to do it today and I have Diabetes too type 1
My 12 year old daughter just got diagnosed on August 28. She lost almost 10 lbs in 2 days almost went in coma and we almost didn’t make the ER 😢 But thank god she is okay now and we are trying to adjust our new life. The hardest part is Knowing she needs to get the shot everyday before meals life long unless they come up with cure in future . Thank you for doing these videos . They really help a lot emotionally
I’m so sorry to hear this! Your daughter will be okay! It is a tough diagnosis to accept but she will do great with it.
@@Type1Tribe Thank you we are doing little better now and videos like your help us a lot so thank you for this
@@McCalifornia good I’m glad!!!
My 12 year old daughter just got diagnosed with type 1 . She lost so much weight in last 2 days but before then Whole last 6-7 months she kept going to bathroom frequently. We all wish cure comes out soon because mentally is very hard
I was diagnosed in 1968 and started on insulin the end of November 1970 (Those holidays tend to do that it seems). I'm telling you that there wasn't home glucose meters until 1983 and were not inexpensive. Now we are fortunate to have meters readily available and now CGM's. So you can know what foods and drinks are doing to your glucose levels which is a major piece of information to know in your treatment. The complications of uncontrolled blood glucose levels are real. However, if having a glucose level of 300 one day doesn't mean one will go blind, need kidney dialysis, or amputation the next day. Complications take time so don't panic if it takes awhile to get things on track. Specialist's such as endocrinologist are very beneficial in treating and advising you. But one need's to take personal responsibility for caring for oneself. The doctor isn't putting food on your plate every day. And the one thing that bugs me to no end are those that "brag" about how little insulin they use daily. They accomplish this by by hours of exercising, fasting 18 hours a day and only eating boiled chicken breast and broccoli. If that's how you want to live, go for it. One can achieve good control eating sensibly which includes special occasions and using or even "dumping" insulin on it to accomplish that. No shame in that. A working pancreas would and does it all the time! And Samantha is correct in learning from others as well. You will find that the "very learned and experienced" still mess up from time to time as well. Which is reassuring.
Thanks for sharing!!!
I had my second Diaversary yesterday. I was misdiagnosed as I was 44 years at the time and my primary doctor didnt know any better. Despite I had a BMI at 22 and I was told to eat less and exercise more as well as was put on Metformine. The treatment didn't go particularily well and my HbA1C increased from 96 to 103 mmol/mol (11.6 % ). Luckily the doctor had a suspicion that it might be Type one. I went in to further testing and I was put on Insulin and got a CGM. I eventually went in to a year long honeymoon period and, all I needed was 3 units of long acting Insulin. After that I sadly had to ramp up the dose of both short and long acting insulin. This period gave the opportunity to learn a lot with good help from my remaining Beta cells. I ended up healthier than before as I was forced to make better choices. I some times think it is unfair that I have to take my blood sugar in to account in all situations. However when I am on top of the glucose management I can live my life to the fullest.
Oh my goodness!!
I have been type 1 for 38 years. I didn't speak to other people with type 1 until 6 years ago. Support groups are great, there is so much you can learn from other type 1s.
So glad you found your people!!!
❤❤
I am type 2 diabetes I recently found out on my birthday of this year Jan 4 I was type 2 diabetes….
I’m so sorry!
Try some chicharrones (fried pork skins) for snacks. I eat them as a bread substitute (as mouth feel) along with other foods.
Yes I’ve had them!!
Thank you. I’m 62. Similar Hospital experience. Newly diagnosed this week. Was in hospital with Keto Acidosis. Figuring it out 😊. Thanks for this video.
Ugh I’m so sorry to hear. You got this!!!!
@@Type1Tribe thanks, appreciate you.
Hello every one my son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a month back. He is 12 year old. His symptoms were frequent urination, very thirsty and lossing weight. He used unrinate more at night. I checked his fasting sugar levels it was 350mg/dl. Now he is in his honeymoon phase of pancreas, now not giving any insulin. But his low sugar episodes are repeating again. Plz anyone can help about this.
Forget yogurt / grape bowls. Sugar in most commercial yogurt. Poison
Properly assessing your basal rate is crucial for doing this. You want your basal to keep you steady while fasting, which is what basal should be doing anyway, and no more than that! And you NEED some insulin to cover that protein! This was more like "ketovore", and that's ok. But making sure you are not overbasalized and figuring out then how much bolus for protein you need will work the best.
Have you had your C-Peptide done yet? An adult onset T1D (LADA) woman may have some insulin function of her own. This would make it more possible to skip insulin during a carnivore day. I was a child-onset T1D, and my C-Peptide was zero when tested just a few years ago. So a T1D might reduce but not eliminate insulin with carnivore / low carb. Thank you for your story, and keep at it!
It's crazy how low's can affect one so differently. Not always the same. I've been in the 40's and feel like I'm doing just fine. My biggest issue is rebounding high. Time and time again I'm treating a low and still dropping so I treat some more and then rebound going up arrow 45 minutes later and having to walk or dump insulin on it. Grrrr! You taking 2 glucose tablets and walking at 70 guessing saved you with a nice 87 at the end.
Wow that is a serious low. How often do you calibrate your CGM?
I was diagnosed 35 years ago. I've often been rushed to the ER and I am now diagnosed as a Labile (Brittle). My glucose rises and decreases so often that this seems perfect! Thank you for your kindness and concern. God bless you.
I was just recently diagnosed at age 30. I’m so glad you touched on the humbleness of T1D persons…..it’s a whole new forced perspective on life, and it comes with a lot of mental and physical sacrifices. I have no prior history with diabetes. After my diagnosis, I became so grateful for every “normal” activity I got to participate in that I took for granted before. I’m so glad to hear your advice and know I’m not alone with these emotions!
You are not alone!!!
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 3 weeks ago. For the last 5 years I was told I had type 2 diabetes. When I was unable to control my blood sugar with food and metfromin, my doctor told me to just keep trying. I pushed her into doing blood tests on me, which she was very reluctant to do. After all the tests were done, she told me I was probably missed diagnosed. But I'm actually not sure. My l ife is turned upside down. The people I have told that I have it, seem to think its not big deal. It is a huge deal to me. Even my husband doesnt really understand, but he is trying. I feel depressed today. I've been keeping a good mental attitude, but today I feel the weight of my diagnosis. I'm going over to Europe in a week, and I'm scared. I've been watching videos which is how I found you. Thanks for sharing your story.
Omg I’m sorry! You got this!!!
I feel you, I was just diagnosed as type 1 just over a month ago at 60. This was due to my cancer treatment killing my pancreas. No one in my family is diabetic or immune compromised. I was a total snacker, and now I can't 😢 I hate trying to completely change my eating habits after 60 years. I've never been on a diet, it's so hard
Ugh I’m so sorry
Big hugs tears of joy bear each other's burdens I would love to rub elbows with you I would love to rub your elbows

I was diagnosed as a type 2 back in 2017. It wasn't up until the summer of 2023 when I went into dka. I was 41 when I was rediagnosed with LADA.
I was diagnosed in 2002 as type 2 at 28. An overweight adult...must be type 2, right? DKA in 2006 and determined to be type 1. And trying to explain to even doctors that you're NOT type 2 is exhausting!
❤
Tandem in general has a better algorithm than the omnipod. The auto bolus has been a game changer along with the increase in basal it has cut down highs for me. With omnipod I would always run higher than I wanted. It was way too conservative.
Thanks for this video! I really needed to hear this since I am struggeling at the moment. I'm 64 living in Germany and was diagnosed type1 3 months ago after waking up in Intesive Care with ketoacidosis. The past 5 years I have been living low carb since my mom was a type 2, I didn't want to travel the same route. Fat chance! This is worse! What was absolutely new to me is the connection to other autoimmune deseases. The doctor at the hospital just looked at me and told me they didn't have to wait for further results since I have vitiligo. Therefore I am all with you about educating people about type1.
Congratulations 🥳 🎉
Use a spare bottle to measure that juice!!
Not a bad idea
@drkiltzy❤❤❤ @drbaker @nursenisha @drkenbaker
Pleasure to see you and you new baby❤❤❤ I eat butter when I am low 😋 have you tried this?
Does it bring your levels up???
@Type1Tribe it doesn't take long either. Or I just eat bacon.
Being a new Mom is appearing to be doing you well. Guessing milk production may be contributing to the low glucose numbers? I can really see why you are drinking more water. Congratulations to the "newly updated" family.
Yes probably!!! Thank you 💖
