When You Just Want to Find a Nonfiction Book to Read, but Apparently They're All Bad

Just a disclaimer that while I'm sure some of these books have redeeming qualities, this video is just meant to reflect the way I've seen historians online reacting to them. Haven't read them all myself and I'm not a historian, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. (Except when it comes to The Man-Date of Heaven, of course. That book is perfect.) Also, Galvinar is the Qin Shi HuangDi of this universe. He united his warring states brutally, to be proclaimed King and go down in history as a great man, only to die prematurely because of his vain attempts of seeking immortality. In Chinese history, it was probably mercury poisoning from all the elixers he drank from his daoist alchemists.

Lmao so good Always had big ideas for stories but recently through school was forced to write short stories as like an exam Really hammered home that ACTUALLY writing, doing the writing of writing-it’s like cooking. Thinking doesn’t make it so, you just kinda… just have throw it all together and hope it’s edible and tastes good by the end, but you’re not gonna have anything to eat if you just kind of stare at your ingredients. You gotta chop and burn them!!! I mean like-ambition and forethought can be really important for projects but if you START there with just the ambition you’re kind of screwed. If you start with trying to create a FUNCTIONAL narrative, give yourself a really clear framework, setting, character or theme/pillar to return to, you can pretty quickly bang out a functionally complete story and then just… excavate intent from there, refine it, fill in any gaps afterwards Just-KNOW your premise, beginning and end and DO IT. Writing doesn’t have to be so airy it can be a very mechanical almost automatic process of cause and effect-and of play! Brainstorm WITH ANOTHER PERSON. It’s so fun and helpful to get critique, and if you’re doing writing with the intent of receiving feedback it means whatever you’re coming up with doesn’t get to just live in your head, it’s not allowed to… which will kill any airy fantasies that’ll tug on your brain for years, taunting you, begging you to write them even though you don’t know how. You’ll just filter those sorts of stories out because they fall apart in your mouth as you try to explain them in a coherent way

I haven’t finished the book series yet, still working on DE, but the Netflix show IMO had certain constraints that necessitated certain changes. The friend group which is essentially a stand in for many of the main characters throughout the entire book series, allows them to have a single main cast for the duration of the show and since Netflix loves those short seasons, it may have been necessary, to a degree, in order to tell as much of the story as possible as efficiently as possible. Bits of plot lines from both the 2nd and 3rd books were included in the 1st season, but largely they are there to set up the future of the show. I started reading the books because of the Netflix show and I really believe that in order to concisely tell this story in 8 episode seasons a lot was going to have to give. All in all, it felt like an adaptation that honored much of the story and spirit of the novel, at least at this point. It’s been green lit through 3 seasons, so we’ll see what happens next.
