  • It's a wonder I hadn't made this installment in the "Fans Recommending" series yet, especially with some people specifically requesting it. But here it is at last!

      I guess I'm just not on the subreddits enough to experience this sorta thing lol. I quite liked Mistborn, especially in terms of how magic worked, but wasn't super interested in most of the other books he wrote. I think he's a good author in the sense that Mistborn's magic was really creative and interesting, but I do personally enjoy N. K. Jemisin a lot more. Honestly, if there's any fantasy book for me to recommend for people, it'll probably be The Fifth Season.

    I started with tress to test the waters with a lighthearted standalone book. The moved to mistborn, was delighted with the tiny little hoid cameo (a promise of a connected universe), by the end of the final empire I was in love with mistborn. At the end of the hero of ages I knew I had to know more, then I made the mistake of reading secret history because I wanted to know what happened with a certain character, and at that point, I, along with said character, understood how little I knew of what is the cosmere. After that I followed sanderson's recommended order (if the author recommends it, I am following it) I loved warbreaker and elantris so so much, even though people say they are some of his weaker works, adored yumi, was surprised by how much I liked era two of mistborn and I won't even start on the stormlight archive. Wow. Just wow. I dont think I ve loved a fictional character more than my man kaladin. Trully sanderson's masterpiece. I have a confession.
    I still haven't read that extra story that we got at the end of the 4 Secret Projects. I haven't watched the announcement of the next Secret Project. I haven't even been to the subreddit in so long, I probably wouldn't even understand the memes anymore. I'm so behind...

    I went through and planned out my reread of the Cosmere for the 5th Stormlight book and it's _only_ 463 hours of audiobook. Very doable. Over 7 months, that's _only_ a little more than 2 hours of Cosmere a day. I highly recommend everyone do it
    Edit: Is this going to be the 3rd time I've reread most of the Cosmere (only the second reread of Mistborn, weirdly), in less than 4 years? Yes. And? If I'm not reading a Brandon Sanderson book in a month, my reading list feels incomplete

    If you're looking for non-cosmere stuff, try the Skyward series. It's a really good sci-fi series. The Reckoners is pretty good too. Or maybe try the Frugal Wizard's Guide for Surviving Medieval England if you're looking for more fantasy-type stuff

    I think it’s actually somewhat hilarious that this video was recommended to me as I just finished reading the RAFO ordering of the Cosmere over the past I’d say month and a half (I spent practically every waking moment that I wasn’t doing school work reading or listening to the books). If you’re tired hearing about mistborn I recommend diving in with Tress of the Emerald Sea it’s only one book it’s shorter than mistborn 1 by about half and the story is very enjoyable

    I wanted to get into adult fantasy since I haven't read any fantasy since highschool - and literally every recommendation was brandon sanderson. So I went to the bookstore and was confused because I had to look up which books to read first, and some were like, 'oh well this trilogy you don't HAVE to read but it gives context and this and this' and I'm just, confused. And then they say his magic system is super deep and complex but I just wanted a whimsical adult fantasy story - I don't need multiple series spanning hundreds of years in lore in different locations. XD Then when I asked the workers at the store they said I should read ACOTAR and I was like, "Oh?" Cause according to youtube and tiktok it's the worst thing on the planet so now I have no idea what I'm supposed to get into XD

      @Trisjack20 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Basically try a single book and see if you like the tone. When it comes to Brandon and the Cosmere I do not think you need to be Cosmere aware to enjoy his work. Read one of them Mistborn, Tress, Warbreaker (which is free so nothing committed but time). if you like his style then read more when you want to.
      If you want to try something more satirical try Pratchett you can't really go wrong reading Guard Guards or Going Postal and see if you like that tone when you read that 1 book... if you do GO for it. He has lots of books but non you NEED to read.
      If you want something a little more generic fantasy try some Forgotten Realms like maybe The Crystal Shard by Salvatore. if you like it there is a lot more there but again unnecessary if you don't.
      If you want something a little shorter than Sanderson but not generic fantasy try something like Peter V Brett the Painted Man (Post apocalyptic fantasy setting) or the Dresden Files (Modern crime solving in a fantasy setting).
      I could go on but basically the key is try one book don't worry about the series or how many other books that author has etc and just see if you like the feel of it. If you do most authors have a lot more for you to consume. But if they can't engage you with a book on its own... then they may not be for you and there are so many others you don't need to commit.
      Once you have tried a couple and found what you like you can use that to find other series that are likely to work for you. If you like Sanderson you are likely to enjoy Jordan, if you like things more grim and dark like George Martin you may find you like Joe Abercrombie etc. But this idea that you can't enjoy something unless you have (or are willing to) watched/read it all is just foolishness.

    You nailed my experience with this going back to when he started. (Yes, I'm old.) If you really want some "romantasy" do Leigh Bardugo. (I swear, it doesn't matter that they're 17. Are The Wheel of Time people 17. I don't know! because... Sanderson people totally scared me away making me feel like I would have to take Sanderson on as a minor in college or grad school. I'm scared to this day.

    Other genres have this problem. In the 4X Gaming subreddit, there is a contingent of gamers who think "Stellaris" is the answer for everything. "Would like a heavily detailed space empire game". Stellaris. "Would like something easy to learn". Stellaris. "Looking for a long game of epic scope". Stellaris. "Something I can play quickly." Stellaris. "Looking for a space 4X game that does X, Y & Z... but NOT Stellaris". Stellaris. (srsly, they have recommended Stellaris for people who specifically want to exclude it from consideration)

    as a person who has only read 2 standalone novels by brandon sanderson, both of them being considered the worst starting points to start reading the cosmere by many people, my opinion is to start wherever you like and not go and ask a brando sando scholar where to start reading the cosmere or just brandon sanderson in general and read what interests you.
