Would using the column plugin allow you to put your dataview tables side by side?
I've never heard of that plugin, but taking a look at it, it looks like it would allow you to easily add columns to your dashboard! I'll have to do a quick follow up video to show it in action! Thanks for sharing!
there were shorter videos that popped up before this, but so glad I chose this one! extremely helpful, thanks a bunch <3
I very much appreciate you choosing to watch this one 😄 I hope it gave you a good starting point for working in Obsidian.
nice idea bt id like to argue tags are for sorting through a set of stuff, for example, my folder contains a lot of quotes , by using tags i sort through quotes that i have internalized or have used in my papers,i might also add a tag to sort the quotes in metamorphosis by ovid and it can be done through links as well. tags are kinda in between folders and link bt i suggest you to try to have a perspective shift about tags
Thank you for sharing! I feel it’s beneficial to share my philosophy on how I use tools. Just because something was created to serve a specific purpose (folders, tags, etc) doesn’t mean that’s the ONLY way to use them. I’ve found (just as the developers of Bear and the Tag Folder plugin did) that there’s a way to use tags that fills an in between use case. This usage of tags as a facsimile of folders works the way my brain does. It may not work for everyone, and that’s okay, but we need not limit ourselves just because something isn’t the traditional way of doing things.
Just a note to let you know that this has been one of the clearest explanations of applying Zettelkasten to Obsidian. It's so easy to get lost in the build/tinker mode that you forget the basics. Exellent job! I've subscribed and I'm on the Destina train!
Thanks for the sub! I’m glad this helped you with Zettelkasten, although I’m unsure how it did because it’s about building Notion-like dashboards. I’m curious as to how it helped you with Zettelkasten, so please feel free to share!
Great video! Simply and elegantly explained the core functions of Obsidian.
Thank you so much!
thanks this is good work
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching! I hope it proves useful to you 😄
Honestly a great video I would highly recommend you watch this.
Thank you so much! I hope it was useful to you 😄
Very helpful. Thank you.
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching 😄
For me it's useless because onbtje strange way to connect the notes they should be able to connect in any order. Also having a big diagram is absolutely useless. I professionally work with graphes, and I vab guarantee that the giant graphes people proudly show are unreadable for humans, because we need dedicated programs to read them. Useful maybe for a few notes. . That being said Obsidian is cool for other things, easy to take in hands, and I love the rendering of their pdf (but natively add page numbers!!!!), hopefully a community member made a better pdf plugin but it is strange to me they can't do that...
Yeah, I don't use the large graph much. I do sometimes use the local graph view to see connections to the note I'm actively working on. I haven't delved into any community PDF plugins. I'd love to hear what you find there.
@creadevlabs it's literally called like that and it adds 1/6, 2/6 at the bottom. I am more surprised Obsidian can't do that natively.
I'm able to see page numbers at the top when viewing PDFs. Is it not doing that for you?
I clicked on the video link thinking I would learn something, but I learned that I know more than what is contained in the video. Thank you for the insight.
Glad it was useful to you, even if not in the way you expected 🤣
Started dozen or so beginner tutorials, but this the best one. Good job!
Wow, thank you so much! I hope it was useful to you as you get up and running with Obsidian 😄
I’m gonna hard disagree here. You have an ontological problem here (ontological? I’m pretty sure?). A folder is a sort of Set of things. Things go into a Set. A tag is a label, not a Set of possible things (or is it?…) What if you have 690 tags? It will just create 690 folders… how can a tag be a set of possible things since it is a label placed onto a thing to represent a thing? How can a label represent a set of things? My brain hurts. If anyone wants to school me on this have at it. I just don’t see how making the Tag a folder solves any problems
The problems it solves for me (creating and deleting folders on the fly, having notes in multiple folders, etc) may not be the same for everyone. For instance, you make an excellent point about a large number of tags creating a large number of folders. I don't have a large amount in my vault, so it's not a problem for me, but may be a problem for someone who has 690 tags. What I've presented here is just one way to solve certain problems, and is by no means perfect. It's something I'm still experimenting with and tweaking as I go. I'd love to hear how others are organizing their vaults and what unique solutions they've come up with.
Mathematically speaking, tags as they kind of add "types" to stuff would be more precisely be described by categories. In category theory a category is something that contains objects and arrows that connects and relates those objects to one another. In our case, the relation would be the equivalence in which every item in this category has a similar functionality (for example, "TODO" for every note that is recent and needs to be refined) Tags CAN be viewed as sets of things Folders form disjoint sets of things in the collection of items. This means that an item cannot be in two folders at the same time, as fundamentally each folder is disjoint from each other (they dont share the same elements.) While tags form a coverage on the collection of items, which means that items can exist in multiple tags at the same time. So you CAN view tags as a set, where the collection of all tags forms a coverage over the space of all items that can be labeled. But fundamentally they cant work as proper folders because to be a folder they need to be disjoint. So in this sense, our structure that connects tags would be a category of tags, if the collection of all our tags is finite then it's a small category containing only the set of all possible tags. Each tag individually is a adjoint set of things with the same label. In this structure, a intersection of tags (an item that has multiple tags) forms a new set on this structure, and it makes sense because just because an item has multiple tags doesnt mean they are "related" directly. If you have a tag "project" and tags "work" and "hobbies", just because an item is labeled "project, work" and other is "project, hobbie" doesnt mean that there is a direct relationship between them. So it makes perfect sense to define multiple tags as new sets of objects that contain only those tags. Which is why you end up creating new "folders". It is mathematically accurate in the view of category theory for this system.
You are right on folders: they are made to contain stuff, if you want something in multiple folders then you need to copy it. Tags are something you attach to a thing, so one, unique instance of said thing can have multiple tags. Example: Folders: - Folder 1: - thing - Folder 2: - other thing - thing (copy) # Now there exists two copies of the same thing Tags: - Tag 1: - thing - Tag 2: - other thing - thing # This is still the same thing, so there's no replication Again: A Folder CONTAINS stuff, a tag GROUPS stuff, but grouping doesn't mean putting it in the same place, just looking at it with the same lens as other things.
Thank you for this great video, would love to see how to put boxes next to each other with css, the current videos on TH-cam about this are a bit shady
Thanks for watching! 😁 I will add a video talking about using CSS to control page layout to my list of upcoming videos.
When doing this, can we add timestamps? Or do you know of any alternative methods? I’ve been trying to use the Media Extended plugin, but it’s not working for me 😭
I don’t know if you can add timestamps or not, but it’s something I will look into!
@ thanks!!
Great video as always :)
Thank you for watching! 😄
This looks like an interesting idea for managing files but it seems to be managing tags in a suboptimal way. If you have a note with 3 tags shouldn't it exist in 3 different folders, rather than creating a folder for files that have all 3 tags. You are creating a folder hierarchy now, which still sucks. If I want to see all the files for projects I shouldnt have to fish around a bunch of "folders" to find them all because some exist with additional tags attached. Thanks for the video, yes Im moaning but think of it as constructive feedback :)
Thanks for the feedback! I do appreciate it. I agree the Tag Folder approach isn't perfect. While it solves a lot of problems, it introduces others. The 3 tags thing I think can be solved by experimenting with the settings more. This approach is still new to me, and needs some fine tuning. I'll do a follow up video a little later down the line to share the results 😁
You can accomplish this behavior by: - enabling "Behavior/Disable narrowing down" - disabling "Arrangements/Merge redundant combinations" After doing that the files with multiple tags should appear on multiple tag folders at the same time and selecting said file will also highlight all the tag folders that contain it.
Great technique. My take on this will be making the columns for life areas (for me family, financial, career, learning, Wellness, Social).
That’s awesome! And you can fill in the activities you’re doing each week to improve in those areas 😊
Few comments: 1. Use the plugin "Consistent Attachments and Links" to ensure links to media files remain correct as you move files out of folders. 2. Use "Tag Wrangler" to handle tag renaming. 3. Use the Linter plugin, under the YAML section "Insert YAML Attribues" to insert tags for all items in a folder (right click the folder and select "Lint Folder" to apply those tags to all files in the folder. Make sure you then update the YAML section to remove auto tags, otherwise every file you edit will end up with the same tags)
Wow, thanks! Those sound like super useful plugins to use alongside Tag Folder 😄
I love how you're like "I don't know if this does anything, but I have it on anyway". nice reference!
Haha. Most of the time I’m able to figure what settings do in plugins, but this one was a bit hard to figure out. I’ve got something working that I like, so at least there’s that 😁 And thanks for watching! I hope it was useful to you.
Great idea. Thank you for sharing this. :)
You're welcome! Thanks for watching 😁 I hope it was useful to you.
another new way I've learned. Thank you.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching 😁 I hope it was useful to you.
Do you know if there is a normal search function in the Projects plugin? Because I searched and didn't find it, only filters. And in my case it is an important feature.
There isn't a search function specific to the Projects plugin. Since Projects is just pulling in notes from your vault, you should be able to just use the default search function.
Thank you! Very nice ideas!
Thanks for watching! I hope it was helpful to you 😁
Hi, I'm confused with the second feature, how did you make pages and docx at the first place? I only understand canvas cause I can press "create new canvas", but how with pages and docx?
I created the docx and pages files in Word and Pages, not in Obsidian. I simply saved the files in my Obsidian vault so they'd be available to link to from notes.
@creadevlabs thank you, your obsidian videos always helpful, I would like to know how to saved it?
Your Obsidian vault is just a folder on your device, so when saving a document in an app like Word or Pages, navigate to your vault folder in your device's filesystem and save it there. You could also take an existing Word or Pages doc, you can locate your Obsidian vault folder on your device's filesystem, and drag the Word or Pages doc into the folder. You'll then be able to link to the doc from your Obsidian notes.
Really good vid.
Glad you enjoyed it! I hope it was useful to you 😁
Going to try this. Been trying different options to see what which one works for my brain! This one might do the trick
Let me know how you like it! I'd love to hear people's experiences with it. I hope it works well for you!
How do you then get obsidian to turn the audio into notes? I thought this app would be more intuitive...
It doesn't transcribe the notes for you at this point. I hope that's something it does in the future.
For some reason it isn't within my commands, when i search for it. Is there something one can do
Hmm....I've never encountered that issue before. Is there typo when searching for the command maybe?
I have only recently started using obsidian and just found your channel after searching through many videos on learning obsidian, I have to say that yours has been the most useful in clarity, technique and format. By following your videos I am now able to use obsidian in a productive manner as opposed to getting confused by not following a structured learning program. Thank you very much greatly appreciated.
Wow, thank you so much for your kind words! I'm so glad you've found my videos useful and they've helped you become productive with Obsidian. Please let me know if there's anything you'd like to see covered in a future video!
I appreciate you. Well done sir.
Thank you so much for watching! I hope the video was useful to you 😁
Its very detailed! best tutorial for beginners! looking forward to more videos :)
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching 😁 More videos coming soon!
Thank you. Any chance to have at first the dates and then the task? Thank you in advance.
I think the Tasks plugin requires the task description first, then the dates after. I’ll have to do some testing to verify that’s the case.
Just completed setting up with PARA note taking method. In the daily template I have created recommit section with few common tasks and due date placeholder. ## Recommit: --- - [ ] Track Calendar, Emails, Slacks, Budget, OKRs, Monitor 📅 {{date: YYYY-MM-DD}} - [ ] No Assumption (validate doubts): 📅 {{date: YYYY-MM-DD}} - [ ] Health: 📅 {{date: YYYY-MM-DD}}
Beautiful and simple something I was looking for
Thanks for watching! I’m so glad it was helpful to you 😁
I am curious, how the app you are using is called? 4:30
The app is called Concepts: concepts.app It features an infinite drawing canvas, so it’s great for brainstorming.
👍👍👍👍
Thanks! 😁

Thanks! 😁
That was helpful, thanks
Thanks for watching! I'm glad it was helpful to you 😁
Where’ the Beginners guide 2025?
I haven't made any guides yet for 2025, but they're coming!
Thanks for this. I was looking for ideas in how to integrate my analog notebooks with Obsidian, and this is way more approachable than most of the resources I found on the topic. As a long-time borrower of techniques from bullet journaling, I love the idea of adding bullets for things that you intend to migrate to Obsidian, and having a bullet at the bottom of the page to mark it as complete is just genius! After so many years of trying all kinds of different systems to organize my life, I'm always on the lookout for clever ways that people adapt elements from existing organizational systems to better meet their needs. I'll be checking out more of your videos as I re-evaluate my use of Obsidian in this new year, and I look forward to any updates that may come regarding this analog + digital workflow of yours. Thanks again. :)
Thanks for watching the video! I'm glad you found it approachable 😁 That's my goal with the systems I create and share, so I'm glad that goal was met in your case! I'm planning on doing an update on my analog to digital system soon as I've made some tweaks that will hopefully make the system even simpler! I'd also love to hear what tweaks you make to it as I too love to see how others are setting up their systems.
hey is there a way in obsidian to have tables like what we have as lists in slack channels ? Basically a table where a column can have datartypes like date, select dropdown, checkbox, etc.
You can put checkboxes in tables, but that's about it. Tables in Obsidian are fairly limited due to everything being based on Markdown.
Soo helpful
Thanks for watching! I'm so happy it was helpful to you 😁
Excellent presentation - detailed and good pacing of material. Thanks
Thank you! I'm so glad you like enjoyed it and found it useful 😁
Your content has been extremely helpful. I have been using Notion for about 5 years or so and it is really bogging down and was getting unmanageable. I am just starting with Obsidian and trying to figure out the best way to set up my projects/orders. I am a woodworker and want to keep track of all my action items, communications, photos, lessons learned, along with a whole host of properties. Would you be doing a future video about how to use projects? I would like to make cards of my projects that shows the photos - almost like a gallery that I believe you showed in one of your videos (maybe the Dataview one). Anyways, please keep up the great content and thank you for sharing! Happy New Year!
Thank you so much for watching my videos 😄 I’m glad they’ve been helpful to you. I do plan on doing a video about the Projects plugin in the near future! Let me know if there’s anything specific you hope to see covered.
Thanks for this very valuable video.
You’re welcome! 😁
Thx! Can you show us your templates and make tutorials to build them plz?
I’ve got a video demonstrating how to use Obsidian’s template system: th-cam.com/video/IR5Enc2MV3Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wlh8r_4R30MUBi9F Give that a watch and let me know what gaps there still are so I can address them in a future video 😁 Thanks for watching!
@creadevlabs Thxxx U are amazing!!
THX BUT DON'T USE MACOS. USE LINUX SUPPORT FREE SOFTWARE!!!
thanks dude... I was going to learn it, so I could find connections between my night dream's elements... but for now the only thing I know about graph view is that you have to connect things manually... it doesn't find connections, i mean exact elements inside my different dreams... right?
You should be able to see if a note mentions another note in the “Unlinked Mentions” section. It gives you the option to link the notes there, and then you see those connections in the graph view.
Do you know how to resize embedded videos?
The embedded video in a note will take up the width of the note, so there’s not really any control there without getting into CSS. When embedding a video in a Canvas, you can resize the video just like you would any other card.
@creadevlabs Ok, thanks for your reply
You’re welcome ☺️ Please let me know if you have any other questions!
@creadevlabs you can! you can place the number of pixels you want the embed to have after an "|" in the square brackets, just like you would when renaming a linked note like shown in 00:40:00. So e.g. [|500].(TH-cam Link) or even [|500x300].(TH-cam Link) works with pictures as well 😊 (not sure if it works with other embeds though, haven't tried that!)
Oh wow, that's amazing! I had no idea! Thanks so much for sharing 😃
