Missions of lilbrowhydaw Channel (in no particular order, at least as far as you're concerned):
1. Demonstrate that, while occasionally ultra challenging, truly wild birds are plentiful on SD public land & can be put in the vest all season long if you & your dog know what you're doing.
2. Show off my dog. He's not perfect by some standards, but he's pretty damn close by mine.
3. Make some videos that I get a kick out of. If somebody else likes them, great.
4. Put my videos somewhere I can access them any time, any place.

South Dakota Pheasant Hunting 01-05-2025
I wasn't in the mood for frozen fingers Sunday, so we hit 15 ditch spots. I walked about 5.7 miles, but they're quick miles, since Ace can hunt a ditch so quickly. He gets me moving pretty good sometimes.

Ace & I hit a Game Production Area in East-Central SD & saw a ton of pheasants. The vast majority, of course, weren't very cooperative, but 3 were. It's been a great season so far, but I'd really love 5"-6" of snow to bunch the birds up, so I could see how many are really around.

Ace & I hunted public land, as usual. Found lone roosters in cattails around slough edges, near corn. For some reason, I'm really struggling with left-to-right shots these days. Not getting enough lead on them, & it makes both of us unhappy.

Ace & I approached from the opposite direction & continued the same public spot where we'd left off on 11-30-2024, continuing the slough edge around. Yep, there were a few roosters there.

Ace & I hit a WPA in east-central SD & got a quick limit. The recent cold weather has made some really good ice, making sloughs very huntable, as well as allowing us to walk on water to get places we couldn't previously.

Wild, public land pheasants continue to be plentiful. On this hunt they were more cooperative than usual, although my shooting wasn't stellar. But Ace took care of business & put them in the vest.

Got a somewhat easy limit at a WPA. Finally got a little moisture to cut the dust a bit. What a relief. Made for much better scenting conditions. I really enjoy that aspect of hunting when it's moist/wet, although it does lead to more false alarms. I'd love to know how long pheasant scent can stick around on wet grass & still be detectable.

Gun, shells, boots, gloves, dog stuff, GoPro stuff. I get asked regularly about some of it & occasionally about others. Here's a pretty good synopsis of the gear Ace & I use in the field.

Ace & I again on public land; this time another couple WPAs. Going with the theory that even though a spot may have been grazed down to about nothing, pheasants will still use the sloughs between feeding times, even if they're not roosting there at night. Relatively easy limit that should've been considerably quicker yet.

Ace & I went out with my daughter Leah during SD's youth season to see if she could shoot a pheasant. She probably could, but she honestly doesn't care if she does. That's fine, although it makes me question her lineage a bit. (that's a joke) The next weekend, Ace & I hunted more public land for Resident's Weekend. So far bird numbers look real good. I think we're in for a fantastic season!!

Ace & I had a short public land hunt (our 4th of the season) on a Waterfowl Production Area Sunday. It was like 83 degrees, so we waited until the end of the day. We'd seen a big group from Nebraska/Missouri hunting this spot the previous day, but they'd been doing a big push through the CRP grass in mid-afternoon, when I figure most pheasants using the area were someplace else. When it's that ...

Ace & I on our last hunt of a fantastic season. As usual, public land. Uncharacteristically gorgeous weather. Almost too nice to get close to the pheasants, but we still got 'em. Weird season, mostly because of the weather. But also, we never reached a point where hunting became really, really difficult, nearly impossible. C'mon October!

Ace & I headed for a piece of public land we hadn't hunted all season, & we weren't let down. LOTS of pheasants. As usual, the only rule they played by was that they were going to win. Fortunately, 3 got separated from the rest & made mistakes.

Hunted private land w/ Lucas & Sage. Some real challenging birds & some not so challenging showcased the difference hunting pressure makes. Even with extreme wind, we still managed our limits & had a ton of fun. Our dogs were, once again, the stars of the show.

Ace & I headed out to hunt a public WPA on New Year's Day, but got sidetracked by 2 quick ditches that happened to contain exactly 3 roosters. So we just walked a different WPA & a few ditches for exercise & to see what we could see. Lots of pheasants!!

What part of state do you hunt?
@@bobw9088 McCook, Miner, Lake, Moody, & Kingsbury Counties.
Thanks again for sharing your videos. I enjoy watching you and your good dog, and learn much about being a good hunter.
Where the heck is the snow?
Right? I don't know.
springer?
Yes.
Dog and hunter with some fine work. Thanks.
Good hunt - hard to get used to hunting along public roads - a no no up here sadly thanks for sharin
good team work rhanks
Happy new year!
Nothing beats when you have been standing there with that sinking feeling and the dog pops up with a bird in their mouth! Good work both of you!
thanks again
Much Obliged
Thanks Ace did real good on that one that made the trans atlantic flight lol good boy
another nice one thanks - question - do you run into rattlers often take care
@@brianve7jyd943 never seen one in my life.
@@lilbrowhydaw thanks i spent a year in South Sask just above ND and they were there so i just wondered - thanks
thanks again Sir -- my new double will be her in March in time for next falls sharp tails and ruffed grouse - sadly no pheasants - CZ Bobwhite G2 in 28 ga 3 in - ive had a 28 single shot cooey snce i was 10 - a lotta birds have fallen to that ole gal -- thanks again
Thanks Sir - take care
Thankya Sir sum good shots there and Ace has it for sure - take care
Good hunt for sure - Ace sure does work well with you - veggitation looked a lil nicer than them tall cat tails
well done again - and great closin photo lol take care
Thankya Sir - well done by both of you - u mention in ur videos something about their Nose ?? i think it is - not sure what you mean by that if i may ask take care
@@brianve7jyd943 close nose. Refers to their nares or nostrils. Pen reared birds have flared, bored out nares from having anti-pecking devices (blinders). These have regular ("closed") nares, meaning they're 100% wild. It drives me crazy when so many people claim the state of SD releases birds. They release exactly zero. These birds were conceived, hatched, & reared in the wild like 100 generations before them.
@@lilbrowhydaw thanks very much Sir - appreciate knowin that - ive learned more bout pheasants by watching half doz videos so far today - even located a Mountain Prairie vest lol thanks again
Thanks Sir - that Mushers Secret is fantastic stuff - i use it in the north here every winter - i even know sum folks that use it in AZ and NM for the hot sand -- and those seat covers are fantastic aswell - i have had them for years i looked around for a Mountain Prairie vest - but theyre scarce - maybe by next fall - thanks again for your down to earth videos - much appreciated
good work - thanks for sharin
Thanks for sharin - Ace worked dang fine for you - i think your level of training is just fine takecare
Nice job - ive been in sum pretty thick brambles and devils club but them cat tails look like a tangle mess to git thru thanks
They sure can be. But they're thicker/denser/taller in a lot of places this year than I've ever seen them. We had tons & tons of rain in spring & early summer that really seemed to like.
Real nice hunt Sir - nice to see a man and his critter - am i correct in saying ur dog is a Springer? and hard to tell in them cat tails but does he point or flush - ive never had a either so not sure thanks and take care
Yep, Ace is a springer. Springers are flushers. No pointing whatsoever, although once in a great while maybe there's about a 1/2 second pause before trying to pounce on the bird.
@@lilbrowhydaw much obliged so then you keep them close when working them ie in side gun range ?
@@brianve7jyd943 yes, that's the idea. I'll let him range 20-25 yards fairly regularly. If he gets further than that, he'll either work his way back to me soon, or there's a reason he's over there & I better get over there too. It's challenging when we can't see each other, & even moreso when we can't see or HEAR each other (like on real windy days). But for the most part he does a good job of checking in with me & staying close.
@@lilbrowhydaw thanks very much - sorry for all the questions but im 76 and thinkin of getting a bird dog - what are the springers like to train - for a fella thats had dogs all his life but not bird dogs thanks
@@brianve7jyd943 I've only had 3 springers & I don't train to a high level. But I'd say they're not hard to train. Very quick learners. But just by the nature of the beast, they can be a handful in hunting situations. They won't stop unless they're made to stop. I'm 55 & sometimes Ace is all I can handle. If I continue to have springers, I anticipate eventually reaching the point that I have to train them to stop & sit on a whistle, no questions asked. Otherwise they'll lose me for sure.
You worked hard and earned all three. Those Boss shells 3/5s put a hurt.
@@dougB4454 thanks Doug. I don't use the 3/5 duplex loads. I get that some people like them, but the theory makes zero sense to me. I shoot straight #4.
Are you shooting a Sweet Sixteen or a 12?
@@erniemadrid1739 Sweet 16. 1990 Japanese. It's far & away my favorite shotgun.
Love watching your videos here from ohio! Our numbers are way down, hopefully a trip is in our future!
Great video of hunt and dog work by Ace. Been hunting S.D. for over 20 years and never gets old watching videos. Sure you've been asked this before but what camera are you using? Voice commands or remote? Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, glad you enjoy watching. I use a GoPro Hero 11. Settings 4k resolution, 60 frames/second & "linear" field of view (prevents fish-eye effect). Camera's mounted on my head, so I just reach up & start recording with my finger. Then I stop it w/ a voice command. It's weird. I've tried using only my finger & using only voice commands, but this method seems to be the most reliable for me.
Have enjoyed your videos - watching your dog’s tendencies has helped me recognize a lot of the same in my 2 Springers (2yrs and 8months).
Great video. I was laughing a few times. Don't ask Ace what he's doing, just follow him! GPA Lets GO!!
Hey, communication is key between a hunter & his dog. He can't expect me to follow him blindly. What does he know?? 😆
I enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing.
7:07 they always go toward the tree lol. Good video
My fricking replies keep disappearing. Don't know if it's because I use words TH-cam doesn't like, or what. But slo-mo shows I made a field goal. Bird flew through the uprights & that's where it ended, between the uprights. 1 bird that counts as 3.
@lilbrowhydaw I had that issue about 2 weeks ago. A5 16 sniper
Another great video! Do you ever go after Prairie chickens?
Never once.
I mean, holy crap that 2nd bird took a load, suprised he had feathers on his back yet. Unreal they can keep flying after that. Nice work Ace as usual! My springer is sad our season is done in MN, you are so lucky to have what you got sir.
I don't understand why my responses keep disappearing. But yes, we're awfully lucky to be able to hunt as much as we do in areas with a good pheasant population.
Great Video Brent! Give Ace a treat for a job well done. That bird at the 11:00 mark was a hoss. It looked like you were moving to shoot him before the camera picked up movement. Can you remember if you saw him already or did it just look like that on camera?
Thanks Ty. I hadn't seen him, but I heard him struggling to get out of the cattails, so yeah, I was ready very early. Didn't pay off on the first shot though. Shooting their tails off isn't exactly what I'm trying to do.
@ I love it when you can see or hear them trying to get out. Stay warm, it’s about to get winter for real.
Love the JCW decal! Nice hunt!
Every hunter should be blessed as YOUARE to have a dog like that
Nice. That was some hard walking. Good dog work as usual. You trained him well.
Awesome hunt
Do you have any instructional videos on how to time your shots to align with white cows and deer stands? Thank you for shooting behind the 2nd bird and in front of the 3rd bird to make the rest of us feel better. Much appreciated. By the way, did you notice that first bird had a 25.25" tail feather when still in the air? You may want to check his toes. Great job, as usual, for both you and Ace! He does an awesome job of finding downed birds in those thick cattails. -- Limitless (UPH)
Good job Ace!!
Good work, you do very well at explaining wtf is going on and what the plan of attack is.
Ace the wonder dog does it again. Your a lucky man to have a dog like that. Keep the video coming
Well done. A wonderful display of your springer doing what he loves. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the Musher's Secret recommendation. I purchased some and it has worked wonders!
love your videos. might have to think of fishing with me in PV mex offshore and then invite me for a bird hunt....hint hint...lol. Ive been a lifelong springer guy since my first one in 84. Just hunted in aberdeen for 5 days nov 19-25 and it was nothing short of phenomenal. cant wait until next year, going to be there again. I hunted the brookings area yrs ago when my cousin went to sdsu and loved it but this last trip has me hooked! where more or less are you located??, just wondering not looking for spots amigo
Glad you had a good trip to our state! I'm also an SDSU grad & live in Sioux Falls now. Most of my hunting is 45-75 minutes from SF, primarily to the west, northwest & north.
