A beautiful shot of the birds....liked "as wild as they come"

Nice Day. You are truly blessed. Protect those wetlands-the rally call for Dakota hunters. ours are all drained in IL. We harvested a paltry 37,000 wild pheasants in 22-23, and I'm not certain that's being generous? Even in the 70's, we were sneaking-up on half-million birds annually-sad.

Habitat seems to be important to wildlife. You're right. I thank my lucky stars to have as much as we do.

Great video. Worked for my limit in the rain Sunday. Ive already noticed the birds being spooked, the new pup is only 4 months old so still waiting to get her out. Greetings from Bon homme county

Thanks for the greetings. What breed is your puppy? If a flusher, I think I'd her her out there some. Short outings. No gun would probably be best. Exposure to birds is everything! Pointers...not really in my wheelhouse.

@lilbrowhydaw she is a lab and we have been going out " practicing" . She is doing amazing, in my eyes lol. But I think all the pheasants flew south already 😉. Very tempting to load the gun but you clearly know the drill. Thanks for the videos

Great video Brent! Thanks for bringing us along! Sounds like your GoPro is still a little winded. Good shooting, maybe @jcwoutdoors will take some lessons. ;-)

I grew up in White Lake and went to College in Madison. Was in the SD National Guard for 35 years so I have been around the state. I always say good hunting west of HWY 81 and better west of HWY 281.

Brent: you were right, my young Springer was ready at 6 months, he’s doing very well for a pup in season 1. BTW, can you mention again your preferred load for non-toxic shot on wild roosters? Take Care.

Great! Glad to hear that Scott. Springers require very little prep in order to hunt. Simply add pheasants. My preferred non tox load these days is Boss bismuth. Minimum 1 oz. #4 shot.

I knew you would be out Saturday. I live in Omaha but watching your weather it showed no wind and 60. Just like here. Funny, being retired you don’t know, or care, what day it is. I am the same. Just curious, you seem to like more wind. Do you feel that gives you and the dog a better chance to limit noise and get close? I like it quiet so I can hear the birds moving in the grass. You had, what I would consider the perfect day.

I much prefer a 10-15 mph breeze. Makes it much easier to get within range. 5-10 yds can make or break us. Still days are tough with pressured birds. They hear us coming a mile away. I don't mind REAL windy days, except it tends to tire me out & makes it harder for the dog to home in on scent.

How do you tell by the feet if its a pen raised bird. Never hunted anything but wild birds .

I haven't either, but they do a couple different things to feet to identify them. They might clip the end of a toe off. Or they might punch a hole in the skin BETWEEN toes.

Thank you for the reply. So exactly what is a closed beak have shot a ton of pheasants but never heard that term . I hope I'm not shooting pen raised birds they are wilder then a pet coon most of the time.
