Only just found this and it put a lump in my throat.. my last car before I left the UK in 2001 was a Rover 800 Sterling (I think it was a Sterling Vitesse or a Sterling Sport) !!! So like yours but in (cough) racing green with the tan leather and er 'wood' trim. I thought I was Lord Muck. Great car in a straight line but couldn't go around a corner faster than 30mph. Also I remember after a hot summer the dash expanded and popped out of its fixings. The mechanic took a look and said 'oh yeah.. they all do that'.

w210 of first 2 years were absolutely gems and the very last year of the facelift. Best cars to date

I have that car and have just drove from Germany through Belgium, France, and most of Ireland and am heading back next week. These cars rust badly, mine however lived in Greece so it has zero rust. They drive fantastic are are smooth and reliable. I love mine. Back in Germany I’m going to give it some love and get it waxed and sealed. Check the door seals and unblock the rubber outlets under the car. Rear plate holder rubs and rusts so get in there aswell. That switch you found is a brake light switch, if it sticks in gear or won’t select 😅 you’ll need that. Quite a common fault on these models. Easy fix aswell, can be done under the pedals with a screwdriver 🪛

I just got the 98 E430 which I'm currently updating. First thing was a dark tint (I'm in Australia), to protect the interior and reduce the heat inside. Next will be the polish.

My granddad had one of these, an e220 petrol auto, ran in HK for 19 strong years until granddad forgot to roll the wondow shit for a storm, so the elctric seats went, eventually it tried to kill him by folding him into the steering wheel but mechanically everything is still fine, aircon runs cold as anything and is still till this day one of the lost comfortable cars ive been in

I think you are misjudged this Merc I got one with 606 engine but I find it good all the way some times you have to do some repairs but most of them it was that the owner before me did not make the repair properly GOOD LUCK
