Rami Malek & Indira Varma in Oedipus didn't steal the show...let me tell you who did!
When a star like Rami Malek makes his UK stage debut expectations are high. Oedipus at the Old Vic is definitely the boldest production I've seen from Matthew Warchus but it falls short where you least expect.

My first time seeing Oliver! the musical | London Theatre Review 2025
มุมมอง 6K28 วันที่ผ่านมา
Oliver! the musical has finally opened in the West End and it feels like this classic of London's history and musical theatre has returned home, where it belongs on Shaftesbury Avenue. Written by Lionel Bart and transferred to the big screen in 1968, Oliver! enjoyed worldwide success before closing in 2011. This new production unites two giants of musical theatre, Cameron Mackintosh and Matthew...

Thank you for your review. I was lucky to watch it twice. It wasn’t easy to buy the tickets but possible. Enjoyed every minute.
I cannot agree more with your first choice! I saw it 4 times and it is perfect in every way - fingers crossed for a soundtrack soon and yes an extension or tour 👏👏👏👏👏
I cannot agree more with your first choice! I saw it 4 times and it is perfect in every way - fingers crossed for a soundtrack soon and yes an extension or tour 👏👏👏👏👏
I'm in two minds of seeing this show, as seeing a couple of other shows next month like COME ALIVE! The Greatest Showman Circus Spectacular, also in May going to see-The First Step which as you prob know has Martin Freeman + Jack Lowden and also in March as you know with the London revival of Starlight Express 😀 I loved the version of Oedipus version at Wyndham’s theatre featuring Lesley Manville and Mark Strong 🤘🏻 BTW-have you watched them Starlight Express videos I sent you a few weeks ago????
So many great shows lined up! Unless you are a big fan of these actors or Oedipus, I think it might not be worth it, especially given that you’ve seen the one with Mark Strong recently. But if you can get some cheap tickets, it’s definitely worth checking out as this production has some great aspects too! I have seen them! Thank you for sending them - so authentic! So good how you managed to find them! ☺️
I absolutely ADORE Rami Malek and am so sad to be in the US 😭😭😭 thank you for letting me live vicariously just a bit :’)
Ahh he is such a great actor! I think you would've enjoyed this play cause he definitely leaned into strengths of some of his previous characters. Glad I could help with sharing at least a little fraction about this play. :)
I thought it was an immaculate production, although I don't disagree with you entirely at all. I think it is indeed, down to a matter of taste. None of your 'revisions' would be out of place, but I'm not 100% convinced that I would want them. For me, I enjoyed Rami's detachment - and his wife not being quite able to reach him emotionally. This felt right at the point in the story where things were so desperate and desolate in Thebes; his detachment felt dystopian and felt relevant. I felt deeply for Oedipus because, through Rami's portrayal, he seemed as though he had been a compassionate leader who had difficult choices to make for all those he cared for and was responsible for. And thus, he shut part of himself off to do it. And of course, I felt great pity for Jocasta. I could not have asked for more from that performance. What I found so special about the dancing was it was first and foremost, visceral. I stopped trying to interpret the story through the dance. I just felt it. The seamless melding of dance styles again (including in costume) brought me into a dystopian vision of that world. I will likely, see it again, once the actors have settled in.
Thank you so much for taking time to watch my video and share your thoughts! I really appreciate it! :) Firstly, I'm really happy to hear you enjoyed the production - there's no better feeling than going to theatre and show exceeding your expectations! It's super interesting to hear how you really resonated with certain character choices that pushed me away but that's the beauty of it as everyone will resonate slightly differently with this production. I totally agree with you about dancing scenes - I also found them really powerful and refreshing! They definitely made me feel something that I didn't feel when watching the rest of the cast. That's a great shout! I'm sure it will get better as they perform it more! Hope you get to see it again! :)
Just saw the show here in Toronto recently....Amazing show....Any fan of Live Aid or 80s music will love it - I posted a short clip of the finale from the show I was attending!
So happy to hear you enjoyed it! ☺️
I get to see this in Dallas in 3 days!!!
That’s amazing news! Hope you enjoy it! ☺️
@ I have every intention of enjoying every moment!!
It's only now, having watched your excellent review for this show (I have tickets for March), that I've realised that it's not the same production as the Mark Strong one. At all. I hadn't paid too much attention and had thought it was just a cast change. Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely looking forward to it, it's just I'd heard amazing word of mouth about the other show. Turns out I'm too late for that production. Huh.
Oh no! Sorry to hear I was the bearer of bad news. Oedipus with Mark Strong literally closed a couple of weeks before the adaptation with Rami Malek opened at the Old Vic so no wonder you thought that. It’s a shame having them so close together. Hope you still find certain elements of this show to enjoy!
Saw the final performance on Saturday 1st Feb (we got to hear the bell ring!). I'd not read any reviews so was going in blind, but at the interval I turned to my wife and said, "the production is pretty cool but Weaver is flat and monotonous." Which is pretty much what the reviews all said. SG also seemed to have a "false teeth" lisp, which I'd not noticed in her previous work, and made some lines hard to comprehend. Then again, she is 75 years old. All in all, enjoyable but SG was out of her depth for the most part. Mason was absolutely the star of the show - astonishing presence and a singing voice that could melt steel.
Oh wow! That must have been so special. It does seem that everyone had a similar feeling seeing this show. I guess the good thing is that we can say we say Sigourney’s stage debut and that counts for something but yes Mason was definitely my favourite too! ☺️
I was rather underwhelmed. Dancing seemed out of place - almost like a Bollywood movie. Acting was good, but the story was too much on the nose and there wasn't much more to it than the 'kill the father, marry the mother'. Stage design was underwhelming. It was almost like they tried to use no props at all, but had to use a couple. Tape recorder was an odd choice.
I totally agree with you about the tape recorder…I was a little bit like ‘whaaaat?’ 😂 just a weird blend of new and old. But dancers were refreshing to me, honestly not sure how I’d sit through the whole show if they weren’t there.
@@KristinaEmilyOfficial I feel the dancers are just padding to get it to an acceptable length. Otherwise it would hardly even be 1 hour long.
I decided not to go and see this one and wondered whether I made a mistake in not getting a ticket, but your review convinced me I made the right decision. It just seems a bit gimmicky to me. Malek looks more like a little boy there than a leader of a state. I'm going to see Elektra next week, hopefully that's not going to be a let-down.
Ah glad I could help! I really wish it was better than this…I had high hopes for it. Amazing, it’s on my list definitely but will try get Rush tickets one of the days if it’s not sold out. ☺️ hope you enjoy it!
So, I think I did the right thing by skipping on this show and choosing mind-blowing version at Wyndham’s theatre featuring Lesley Manville and Mark Strong What a show it was. Thanks for your review
Thank you for watching and commenting - really appreciate it! ☺ I didn't manage to catch that one but reading reviews, it sounds like it was a really good one! Shame these two productions were scheduled so close to each other!
I’m sorry to dissent but I saw this production recently and it was terrible. The plaudits are undeserved but the cast has believed them so are now resting on their laurels. Poor performances by all except the actor playing Mr Sowerberry who was excellent. Simon Lipkin’s characterisation of Fagan is appalling. So unwatchable and full of his own misguided talent. Even the actor playing The Artful Dodger is poor. Too old for the role but also so pretentious that he wasn’t easy to watch. Avoid - unless you like being ripped off by the hype!
Except that this doesn't exist in actual Swan species. Sorry to disappoint.
I think it was designed to be viewed solely from centre stalls row g
Having loved this on Broadway, I really appreciate this through review.
Thank you for watching! Broadway version looked incredible! 😍 so good you managed to see that when it was on!
For the rush / lottery tickets I’d recommend going to the Day Seats section of the Theatre Monkey site. This has all the information about day seats / lotteries / rush tickets and all deals you can get for each theatre in the West End. This includes deals that aren’t on TodayTix or even advertised on the shows website very well like the front row tickets for Mousetrap and Wicked. Theatre Monkey also has really good descriptions and recommendations on seats to choose, avoid and what’s best value for money for each theatre as well as tailored recommendations depending on the different show at the theatre also. One warning about Seat Plan, I’ve noticed that most pictures aren’t actually taken from the point of view of being sat down. A lot of the time it’s just a picture of the stage where maybe the person was stood up or maybe leaning very far forward or before people took their seats in front so it’s not always the most accurate. I’d check the perspective of the pictures to see if it looks like it’s from a realistic sitting position as well as the written description if they’ve wrote something.
Jamie Lloyd failed / I wouldn’t forgive this direction 😅
SO YOUR VIDEO TITLE WAS CLICKBAIT , SEEING THAT YOU ENJOYED IT.
yeah, it was good but not great. she did just feel a touch upstaged.
Just saw its North American premiere last Sunday and found your review! I believe this new production has not changed much from the off-West End one. And I do agree, it could be better, but overall it makes a great call, its primary message is necessary as the world is experiencing turmoils, that bringing people together can make a difference The pacing of act two is a problem. Both Amara and Jemma could've engaged more, but act two spends too much time on replicating the live. There was a moment I felt a bit tired of those songs, not the cast's fault, they were amazing, just...I did need a break. And again, thank you for sharing
Thank you for your comment! It's great to hear about the show once it transfers cause sometimes it's better, sometimes it's worse. So thank you for sharing your thoughts. It's coming back to London too so it would be interesting to see what audiences who haven't seen it yet think about it. :) Glad to hear that it was a positive experience for you overall.
@@KristinaEmilyOfficial That's a legit concern. I have nothing to compare, but overall this new production is something I am willing to come back for. Though I won't deny that it still has a decent amount of work to do if it wants to be iconic Hope you also have a great time when it returns to London, if you plan to go see it again xD
I love Macbeth & have seen it many times. I'm looking for a cinema within a reasonable drive in order to see THIS Macbeth.
I hope you get to see it - it's definitely worth the hype in my opinion!
saw it twice last week.agree with everything you said, there were differences between the two shows with different actors taking different lines when setting the scene and trumpets were introduced in my second showing. A gripping story and a wonderful musical but it also felt like I'd seen a world class folk band .In some repects it reminded me of Once from a few years back.
The cast are incredible, aren't they? I couldn't quite believe how many of them play multiple instruments on top of great acting, multiple roles and dancing. Hope this show stays in the West End for some time as everyone should see it!
The original Album by Anais Mitchell is by far much better than the Hadestown Broadway Cast
That album is so special but also very different to the Broadway cast recording so I wouldn't dare compare them as such, I think both of them have a sweet spot in my heart. :)
It was truly awful. I felt I was the one in hell. The narrator was unintelligible. The jazz music monotonous and boring. The songs irrelevent - singing about a train that had nothing to do with it- the fact he walked to the underworld. The two main characters relationship lasted five seconds - I love you...Im going to marry you - and that was it. The fantastic song he was composing sounded like a Seal rip off... for the five seconds it was sung. No memorable songs - even after a decade. Still critics have to keep themselves in business but this should be remaned the kings clothes as it was awful. The couple next to me left at the intermission and most of the row werent clapping. Just utter utter crap that I couldnt sit through it for a winning lottery ticket
Thanks, good tips! P.S. Not related to theatre or anything, but how did you learn English so well?
Thank you - glad you enjoyed the video! :) I started learning English when I was really young and lived in a couple of English speaking countries before moving to London permanently so all of it helped. Also, listening to music, watching movies in English has always been a big part of my life growing up so probably that contributed too. Hope that helps but let me know if you have any question and I could share some tips!
Also use AirPods or any earphones you don't necessarily need to listen music if you do keep it low so you can hear other things just be careful around shady people don't have your phone in your hand
As a Londoner common sense knows that anyone in a big city is to use common sense don't walk through dark parks stick to the main road, walk strong and briskly these people target non savvy people
I nearly worked there in December. Hopefuly in the future I still might. The Theatre Royal certainly is a very special theatre. It would have been great to meet Sigourney!
The theatre is spectacular, so grand and beautiful with plenty of space to spend some time before of the show and truly make a special evening out of it. Hope you get to work there! :)
Predator lookin ass😂😂😂😂
Mason’s performance in this was infectious. So much so that I’ll be keeping an eye on him for a long while. Sig wasn’t bad but I think she could have done better. Perhaps the role wasn’t a great fit for her. Production is astounding otherwise. Definitely a fresh take on The Tempest which you wont get from RSC.
I was also mesmerised by Mason - really delivered character so well! And there are definitely good elements of the production but it just felt like it did let us down where we least expected it to.
🥰🥰🥰
It seems I'm in the minority, I absolutely loved the production and am going back for a second visit next week. I loved the juxtaposition of the modern costume and set design and the old world shakesperean dialog, some of the quips, insults and comedy are as fitting today as they were over 400 years ago. Im probably going to use phrases such as 'you cram these words into my ears' and 'hell is empty, all the devils are here' in the future. I haven't studied Shakespeare and wasnt familiar with the story so enjoyed following the wordy tale. I also thought Sigourney gave a great performance as did all the other cast members, it was fabulous being just a few feet away from such an icon of some of my favourite films. Im also now very much looking forward to Jamie Lloyds production of Much Ado About Nothing having seen this.
I'm very glad to hear you enjoyed the production - I think that's the beauty of theatre and different takes on classics cause every audience member finds something different to admire. I'm also excited to see Much Ado About Nothing, hope it's a good one! :)
You forgot to mention the most popular and best musical of them all: MJ the Musical
It takes you by the throat and doesn't let up until the end. Nicole is a force of nature unleashed. The production is a work of genius and theatre craft that is unique and original.
She is phenomenal! Glad to hear you enjoyed the show. ☺️
I find it a bit odd that Helen Mirren’s portrayal is not mentioned.
What Kristina didnt mention is that if you upload 20 different photos on seatplan, you can claim a £10 off voucher to use on thier website. This is the best way to get cheap advance tickets! Ive seen heathers for £7, Mean girls for £18, Les Miserables for £20 and the great gatsby for £14!
LOVE THIS!! Thanks so much for sharing! I actually didn’t know you can do this! 😍 I will definitely try!
Other suggestion along with Concession, and I appreciate not applicable for many people, but if you have an Access need, you can get some significant discounts on advance tickets plus you can register at key theatre groups (ATG, LWTheatres, Delfont Macintosh, Nimax) and in most cases be able to book online and get discounts at all the theatre group’s theatres.
Thank you for sharing this! Definitely good to know!
Great tips. I do all these already, but Rush tickets in particular is a great way to get good seats cheap. I've always found TKTS a bit on the pricey side, although bargains can be had occasionally.
Thank you! I totally agree with you - TKTS used to be much cheaper I think, now is rarely that cheap but yes, occasional deals might pop up!
Hi…..couple of suggestions. TKTS “on the day” tickets are released from Midnight - if possible I’d book them for best remaining seats (this option also allows you to choose seat/know what seats you are booking). If booking at midnight, also allows option whether to travel or not (Rush tickets only released at 10am so need to be relatively nearby)
Great tips! Thank you! I tried a few times at midnight but always wondered if they add more tickets in the morning 😅
I saw this on the 3rd January. It was absolutely fantastic. Fagin was awesome but the whole cast were great
@@catherineturner2839 couldn’t agree more! Glad to hear you’ve head a great time! ☺️
i want to go so bad
Don't go. It's bad.
No , I will not be seeing a bargain basement version.
When I saw it ncuti managed to break one of the teacups
Hahaha whattt? 😂 that’s hilarious and a bit dangerous! Very much spot on for his character!
Cool!
It really is! ☺️
Saw it last night and couldn't agree more. ❤
Amazing! What a show, right? ☺️
@KristinaEmilyOfficial It was incredible. Pure theatre magic, I sat there going from goosebumps to crying my eyes out to cry-laughing to goosebumps. Felt like a changed person afterwards. I really hope their run gets extended much further because I desperately need to see this show again! (Also, I met some of the cast at the stage door and they were SO very lovely! )
Glad you enjoyed seeing Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of Oliver at the Gielgud Theatre in London, I saw it on Tuesday 17th December 2024 which was absolutely fantastic and I will definitely be seeing it again this year
Yes! It was amazing!!☺️
I am French and one month ago, I saw the new french production in Paris (in december 2024). It was the first time for me to see this show for real, and it was amazing, fantastic !! I would love to see the musical in London in 2025 !
I would love to see Paris production! Hope you get to experience it in London too! ☺️
I went the day after Boxing Day!!
Amazing! Did you like the show?
@ I loved it!! I also attended stage door, everyone was so amazing!
