WICKED movie review: A long but BRILLIANT Act 1
Wicked movie is finally out and I went to see it the day it came out. Lots of excitement mixed with anxiety cause I wasn't sure how the movie will capture the magic of a live show I love so much. But I really enjoyed it. In this review, I break down a few memorable moments from the movie. Are you planning to see it? 💚

There is an excellent video available that features the Wicked movie production designer Nathan Crowley showing how the sets were designed and the concept behind the production, well worth a watch on the Architectural Digest channel. th-cam.com/video/4Qp4tLTrX6A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=kgLN5KtPP_SnWjJ1
Thanks for your review! As a musical fan I was so unsure if I should go since there have been so many "meh" examples of movie adaptations of musicals, now I have my green light xD It sounds like Cynthia's screen acting is as stunning as her stage one (I only knew her as a stage actress before the movie). These two are so different but wow she slays
I felt the same way! But they did handle it with a lot of care and attention to detail so I think you’ll be in safe hands. 😊 Cynthia definitely steals the show as Elphaba but the rest of the cast is following her closely behind. Hope you go see and enjoy it soon! Let me know if you do 😊
I watched Wicked the movie in IMAX yesterday afternoon, the film is visually spectacular well worth a watch. Having seen the stage show in London this is an excellent film version, great cast, incredible sets, really superb production 😀🎵🍿
It must have been INCREDIBLE to see this in IMAX! You gave me a great idea! Think that’s where I’ll see it next. 😍 so glad to hear you enjoyed it! It really has delivered to the promise!
Surprised that you didn't pick any of the classic old musicals.
I do have a soft spot for them but probably don’t listen to them often enough to call them my favourites. Hello Dolly was spectacular this year and Guys & Dolls was also one of my favourite watches recently. Not to mention Les Miz or Phantom but they aren’t my everyday go to. 😊 do you prefer older musicals?
@KristinaEmilyOfficial Yes, I do because the music is more memorable!
For me it was love at first site. This is the best show ever. The feelings this gave was insane
I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it so much! It truly is a special show! 😊
Notice how all the MEN covered their private area before they bowed 🧐
Do you know the name of the song that played in the end?
I don’t remember it unfortunately. Sorry!
Damn such a shame. If you HAVE to digest and force yourself to like a production LATER rather than in that very moment, then that in itself is a tragedy and not a good show at all. One expects to be blown away in the moment of watching a show. Thanks for the heads up! ✌️
Very disappointed with the producers and theater for cancelling shows after tickets were sold. Unprofessional and unacceptable. A pox on all their houses!
I saw the West End production and it was ok, but I was also not blown away. Saw the production on Broadway last weekend and I cannot emphasize enough how much better it was. Talent, band, set, all aspects were higher production value in New York.
Can't wait to see it...
Are you seeing it soon? :) looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
@ I hope in February!

Thank you for this thoughtful review. I live in the States and won't be able to attend. Can you tell me where you found all this footage? Amazing! 🎉
Thanks for watching and commenting, really appreciate it! ☺️ the footage is mainly from the curtain call and before the show so that’s what’s in my video. There was one year when they did a livestream of A Christmas Carol (during Covid times) so you might have a look for that footage if it’s still available but I am not aware of this particular production being filmed and posted on streaming platforms.
I have the livestream of the Covid production in its entirety. Was an astonishing feat to stage and film that production whilst adhering to social distancing rules. It has never been released on streaming platforms.
Luv that theater.
It’s so beautiful isn’t it?! 😍
Great atmosphere though I wanted more haunting quality from the ghosts
Yes they weren’t particularly scary but definitely there was spookiness to it all. 😊 glad you enjoyed it!
For being a bit of A Christmas Carol officiando, simply the best Christmas Carol out. Got tickets to see it on Friday week having seen the same production on at least 3 of previous Christmases. Excluding A Muppet Christmas Carol (obviously!) and honourable mentions for Bolton and Pitlochry (yes I travel that far) best other version I have seen was Tommy Steele as Scrooge in Leslie Bricusse musical 13 years ago !
Oh wow! You do really love A Christmas Carol! ☺️ glad to hear you think this one is the one to see. I really enjoyed it. Haven’t check any others but will keep an eye out for next year maybe.
Did they rap ??
Very unlucky - I’ve lived here 20 years never had any issues coming home late on tube . Sorry you experienced this . But any big city there are risks with dodgy people. Those girls should be ashamed- scum .
Danny ❤❤❤🎉
I went to see Matilda, Mean Girls, and Why Am I So Single recently, all great. I’m visually impaired, and I can honestly say that the access hosts at all events were superb too. We do get some large scale theatre here in Ireland but not quite as much as in UK.
That makes me so happy to hear! Thank you so much for sharing your experience 😊
That's Mark Henry
Just went to see Les Miserables on Saturday. It was absolutely spectacular thank you for the information you give us on the west end :))) <3
Amazing! So glad to hear that! 😊 Les Miz is the longest standing classic so you’ve picked one of the best shows to experience the West End with. ☺️
i went for my birthday, it was so good! i met them after at stage door they were so nice ( there was a sign by the stage door saying you could wait there for them to sign your program and get pictures )
What a great birthday treat! So happy to hear you enjoyed it and got to hang out with the cast a bit! ☺️
I wasn’t going to see this one, but this review convinced me to give it a go. Went last night and loved it. Yes, I cried. Not always a great achievement, tv commercials can make me blubber. But this show definitely moved me. The music was amazing, it almost never stopped. That must be the hardest working cast in the West End. It was giving me come from away vibes and then they gave me a little promotional button as I was leaving, just like they did at Come From Away.
YES YES YES! I can’t even express how happy it makes me to read your comment. So glad you went to check out the show after seeing my review, it’s a show worth everyone’s attention. It also gave me Come From Away vibes but forgot to mention that in the video. So beautiful, thank you for sharing! ☺️
I went to see it a few weeks ago for one of the trial runs and I was blown away by how talented each member of the cast was in so many different ways. It is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen on the west end. Beautiful done, you have got to go and see it if you appreciate heart-warming, charming and uplifting theatre. I cannot recommend it enough.
Couldn’t agree more! It took me by surprise but it’s definitely one of my favourite shows I’ve seen this year. So glad to hear you enjoyed it too! ☺️
I went Nov 1st it was so good
Ahh that really makes me happy to hear! So glad you had a good time! ☺️
It was poor.
Saw this yesterday and It was excellent. The songs, the clothes and the cast!
@@ItsSergeYall so glad you enjoyed it!! Such a fun show, isn’t it? 😊
I'm looking at getting tickets. What are the best seats? I've heard the stage is very high so the tradition of sitting close may not be good.
@brtianniaregina it’s a big theatre so I would probably stay away from the circle seats all the way at the back. Depends on your budget but either circle rows in the section closer to the stage or mid rows in the stalls. Don’t think there’s too much happening on either sides so even if you go for seats slightly to the side, you’ll be able to see well. There are lots of nice choreographies so being a bit removed from the stage helps to see them but I was in row B and still enjoyed it very much.
I saw and thoroughly enjoyed this play. As an avid theater goer (minimum of 3 plays per week), I was deeply moved. I highly recommend "Hills of California".
@@APG-fu6gk glad to hear you enjoyed it! 😊
Dear Kristina, are you Mormon?. I went to see the musical the book of mormon. Its was wery interesting. 👏👏💫
Not sure why it is advertised as a musical when it is in fact more a concert than a musical.
👀🤦♂
I loved Benjamin Button musical. As a foreigner, who lives in London for the last 30 years, it was also easy to follow and understand. And I think for a first time, I preferred theatre adaption of the novella than the movie.
That’s so wonderful to hear! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. ☺️ I agree with you - I prefer the musical to the movie too. Might need to go and see it again!
@ I have a big TV at home which I hardly use. Maybe a movie night at some stage???
I saw it a few weeks ago. It is very good and definitely worth seeing. Favourite song- The Moon and the River
Ahh so glad to hear you enjoyed it! There are so many beautiful songs! I need the official cast recording asap. 😊
@KristinaEmilyOfficial - hopefully, the cast recording will be released soon. You are gorgeous. Have you been in any musicals yourself.
@@Anthony-nj6gt thank you! Ahh I wish! Not yet…apart from some university productions! 😊
Would love to see this. Is there a realistic chance that this will be extended until the end of May? At least, there isn‘t anything else planned after that in the Ambassadors Theatre.
I hope you get a chance to see it! It's currently on until 15th February 2025. I don't know if it will get extended, but I do have a feeling that this won't be the last run of this musical. It's too good not to be extended or put in the West End in some capacity again.
Can’t disagree more. There was no clear storyline and lacked any explanation of the characters or the plot, with too many metaphors. The music was good but quite monotonous and some clear talent in the company. Nothing stuck out or connected with me and I was lost, it was quite tedious and unmemorable. Left after the first half
There's actually two clear storylines but you can't fully understand them when you only watch 1/2 of it. Also if you went on broadway idk why you would leave unless ur hella rich because that shits expensive. (spoilers) They do a pretty good job of explaining what is needed of the characters given the short amount of time and depth of the actual characters. So while I wish they could add an extra hour for absolute new people to fully understand, I think if people pay attention they can at least get the surface level understand of these two people are gods that are having a falling out causing the weather to be harsh, second plot of two people falling in love and one has a gift with music. One lover basically dies so the other goes to save her, (now you wouldn't know because you left) teaches the gods love in a full circle moment that shows how the two pairs of lovers are connected and let the mortal lovers leave (essentially hell) under the condition that they must trust each other and the gods (full song explaining why he decided on the condition) but the moral lover was not trusting enough of the gods and looked behind so she went back to (essentially hell)
For me….this musical, is absolutely brilliant….loved it! Probably the best & most memorable shows. 10/10
When I heard they were going to make a musical, my first thought was DO-NOT-TOUCH-THAT-MOVIE!!! But… I was there last week at the opening night in the Dominion Theatre and I must say I was very pleasantly surprised. I fully agree the cast is excellent, staging and set design top, outfits top. Regarding music: some numbers (e.g. I only love you for your body) are 100% Elton-style, others may be more difficult to be recognized as his compositions. The refrain of the number „Runway“ sung by Emily reminds me of „Somewhere“ from West Side Story - I really hope it‘s not going to turn out to be a plagiarism… Regarding singing: generally very good, except the high note at the end of The Devil wears Prada (the ball scene) sung by someone from the cast and which was totally off-pitch/flat and really hurt my ears. They should work a bit more on that one with their vocal coach. I was also glad that they kept a lot of the original text from the movie. Especially Miranda’s famous cerulean-monologue was kept almost in its entirety. However, I was missing the equally famous „Florals? For spring?! Groundbreaking!“ Also, they added some additional story lines like Emily‘s flirting with the nurses in the hospital where she is hospitalized following her accident (Bon Voyage). This is something which is not in the original movie but nevertheless a good idea as an 11 o‘clock number. Overall, a very positive experience.
Thank you so much for commenting! I am so glad to hear you've had a positive experience seeing this musical. I totally share your opinion - I was a bit wary about going to see it but am so glad I was proven wrong! Great show that will hopefully find a way to many people and fans of the movie. 😊
Did they make them gay?
I saw the show in May and found the Fates distracting from the entire production. The Fates are, from mythology, three goddesses who roughly look the same (beautiful) but have different functions...but the emphasis is trio. In this production, the Fates were straight out of the Sesame Street vignette that one of these things does not belong together. The production had two women, roughly the same size, with the third the size and height of the other two...together. it does not matter if s/he were a very large woman, a trans woman, or a man in drag....it was distracting from the entire production. The Fates were background singers...both figuratively for the play and literally. The size discrepancy added no value to the production. Only detracted
Thank you for this!!!
Anytime 😊
I'm excited, Shaina writes incredible lyrics and the music by Elton John there's really not much to say! im sure the music will be amazing!
Are you going to see it soon? It’s very fun, hope you enjoy it. Let me know what you think of it when you see it. ☺️
