Love these, and Legally Blonde is a cool wild-card pick for No.5. My picks change day to day, but would be similar, I think: 1) Hadestown 2) Next To Normal 3) Hamilton 4) Dear Evan Hansen 5) Heathers Wicked would be right up there too! Keep up the good work.
Thank you!!!☺️ love your choices too but I do have a confession…I’ve never seen Heathers 🙈 something about that musical never made me drawn to it but it’s such a classic that I feel I will cave in at some point!
I totally agree about Hadestown, although I think it's closer to a folk opera than a conventional musical. I saw it for the second time on Saturday and they've changed the two leads, who have very different accents (Scottish and broad Yorkshire). The Hades and Peresphone are being changed next month too although it looks like Hermes is staying on.
Well said! Oh wow, I need to go and see it again. Would you say the new leads are better than the original West End cast? I never saw the OG Eurydice as it was the understudy covering the night I watched it, and now she’s the lead so wonder how they compare.
@@KristinaEmilyOfficial I think I preferred the original two, although the new ones are perfectly fine and I don't think you'll be disappointed, but I didn't quite get the same sense of chemistry between them. I"m going to go back when they have changed the Hades and Persephone, although they'll have big shoes to fill. It's definitely a show you can keep going back to, which is why they issue loyalty cards in the theatre.
Difficult to argue with Hamilton! Have seen it three times this year (five total), and will certainly go back again and again. Every time I see it, I notice something new, or a detail I hadn't picked up. As it's quite complex and fast vocally, I really think that the more familiar you get with it, the more you can truly appreciate what rounded piece of art it is. First time - which was incredible - I found myself concentrating on trying to pick up on every word and story element as best as I could. When you then go away (and likely listen to hours and hours of TH-cam cast recordings!), I find it makes you able to appreciate it more and more, in a much more rounded and holistic way. And because of that, you can truly appreciate why it is so well regarded, and every time you go back to the theatre, it feels like it actually gets better and better over time.
I totally agree. I feel like it’s one of those shows that no matter how many times you see it, it’s so melodically and lyrically complex that I have an a-ha moment quite regularly. Also quite impressive you’ve seen it 3 times this year already!!! ☺️
@@KristinaEmilyOfficial just luck, but enter every single week. Must have been close on two years of nothing, then randomly got lucky multiple times in a very short space of time.
1 West Side Story 2 Hamilton 3 Camelot 4 Les Miserables 5 Beautiful The Carol King Musical Favourite Disney musical Beauty and the Beast Favourite hidden gem Waitress
Love these!!!! I can't believe I forgot about Waitress - I love songs from it and sign them quite often! Thanks for reminding me of it...feel like I gotta extend this list now. And Beauty and the Best is so magical! 😍
My top five would probably be 1. Rebecca 2. Elisabeth 3. Tanz der Vampire 4. Wicked 5. Rudolf/Affaire Mayerling These are so good!! With some like Rudolf and even Rebecca or Elisabeth being terribly underrated
Hamilton is right up there (although as with Hadestown think it helps listening to/reading the soundtrack before see the show)……Les Miz also right up there. My 2 mild curve balls would be Groundhog Day …..and (blast from the past) Blood Brothers (which is on tour at the moment)
Very good choices. Although for me Hamilton is one of my all time favourite soundtracks both times I've seen it live (Melbourne & West End) didn't fully deliver to me. Unfortunately when I saw it in Melbourne the female lead playing Eliza had really bad night, and was so off, and apparently got dropped the performance after we saw her. Not sure if her voice had damaged over the show, but it was unfortunate ... London Eliza was great, but some other performers were weaker although I can't remember specifics. Wicked is among the all time favorite shows that I've played in the pit in, I love the music and orchestra/vocal arrangements so much, although when I saw it in London I didn't enjoy it as much as an audience member as when I played in it. It was still great, I just felt it lacked something from the leads performances. For now my top five, although this could change depending on my mood 1) Come From Away 2) Les Mis 3) Book of Mormon 4) Jesus Christ Superstar 5) Beauty and the Beast. I'm yet to see Hadestown but hope to this year which I expect could easily come into this top 5. With 2x trips a year now to UK for work and cramming in about 20 musicals a year, one thing I've found is it is not just how good the musical is, but sometimes leads just give the extra edge to the show really draw you in and give a wow factor pulling you in more emotionally, and these for me have been the best experiences.
That's really interesting about Hamilton. I had a decent cast most of the time when I went to see it (only in the West End) but I struggled the first time to stop wanting things to sound like the soundtrack and the original cast as I listened so much of it and saw it on Disney+. Now when I go I try and lean into quirks of characters developed by different cast members. I agree with you that it's super hard to pin down 5 musicals but love your choices! Come from Away is amazing too! Probably the only one from your list I'm not that familiar with is Jesus Christ Superstar. Thank you for sharing your choices!
@@KristinaEmilyOfficial Jesus Christ Superstar was one of Andrew Lloyd Weber's first musicals, there is a film version which is reasonably decent, I think it's super creative take on a classic story but needs an exceptional vocal performance from Judas & Jesus to pull it off
This makes me think: what makes a good musical? I love Back to the future, but it's most definitely not for the songs. As a matter of fact, those are the worst thing about it. I love Les Mis, but I do wish they sang less and had more dialogue. Acting and set design is top notch though. While I've only seen Hamilton on Disney plus, I do quite like it, but I struggle to give it full marks, when all they've done to the stage, is a bit of scaffolding. Moulin Rouge on the other hand have a lot of great (condensed) songs, the set design is amazing and it's got the theatre with best vibe, that I've been to. Storywise, it's nothing speical though. If what makes a musical great, is that I sing the songs at home or listen to them on Spotify, then none of them qualify for me.
I like this question and it’s a really hard one to answer, and as someone wrote in other comments - sometimes it changes depending on the mood too. I do think of a good musical as the one I keep coming back to to see, listen to and I am captivated by the story. I do think that on a more technical level it’s about 1) story, 2) music and 3) technical aspects of the production. Sometimes no. 3) can really make or break a musical no matter how good the story/music is. In case of my top 5 choices, I think that all of these musicals meet 1) & 2) in my opinion and then the productions I was lucky to see elevated them and made them my favourites.
Living in London is great for all things related to culture and while I do agree with you that affording theatre tickets is tricky cause they can be so expensive, I think we are lucky to have some tickets going for as low as £15 which is an amount that will barely get you a meal or a couple of drinks these days in London. I have a couple of videos talking about affordable tickets (one linked at the end of this video) but let me know if you’d like some tips and I can share. Rush tickets, lottery tickets and well-positioned restricted view seats could be a way to go.
I do have a soft spot for them but probably don’t listen to them often enough to call them my favourites. Hello Dolly was spectacular this year and Guys & Dolls was also one of my favourite watches recently. Not to mention Les Miz or Phantom but they aren’t my everyday go to. 😊 do you prefer older musicals?
