Hi Jeff, hope everyone is well over there. How are you handling the Canada Post strike? Is it affecting your business with ebay and or other sites? I'm curious. Tough times out there. Happy holidays my friend! Hope next year brings you much success and health for the family.
I was wondering if anyone tried to use promoted listings Only on newly listed items 1-30days old?
commodify (he was searching for a word)
Too much time wasted on intro.
I thought they would raise the minimum promoted scheme rate to 3% last year but jumping now to 5%? Pretty ballsy of eBay. They must not be seeing the returns their shareholders expect.
you say ballsy i say greedy!
Dude if you can like my comment on the profit playbook podcast it will help out massively
As an example, 20 years ago a software vendor made a huge mistake with some licenses I bought. Customer service wouldn't fix it, so they sent me to sales. They made an even bigger mistake to cover up, not fix, the previous mistake. The up shot was I got thousands of software licenses for nothing. I sold them on ebay. I had no costs in these things. I did OK, but at the end of the year I netted $20k from a $125 license. So I literally had no money in them and still didn't make $100k+. Regardless, it's clear a lot of stores got hammered last year and many did not. Those that did not, enjoy your sales. Ebay's coming for your store eventually too.
So a first year store is over $110k in sales? Since when will Ebay allow a new store to skyrocket to sales like that in the first year? Even if it's a second year. It took me three years to go over $100k in sales and that's with Ebay letting me eak up inch by inch. If that's the case, then good on you, but most of the time ebay limits sales for a long time. What is he selling Macbooks coated in gold? $250k in this year? I can't wait until this BS hits these other sellers. Then they may start to see what the rest of us see.
i have verified that his sales are true. It's unclear to me how he has avoided caps that most sellers experience, but he in fact has.
Yep that's my point. I have no doubt there are niches that sell a lot but ebay typically has very slow moving caps that would prevent this. We all know the one seller who claimed he was shutdown due to a pair of $25k shoes when in fact it was probably due to his second store skyrocketing in sales with no limits somehow. Wink, wink. :P
I think it's all business strategy.... think about how many ppl in this world. Ebay had the largest reach. There is an item for everyone, to where we would sell out. That's why the phrase "if it sells once it will sell twice". Is a true statement. It's all control
Out of all the many different TH-camrs that have a channel about eBay selling this guy is probably the only one I’ve found that really gets into the details of selling. OH! Sellers DO dispute, it’s eBay that’s not accommodating their good sellers!
appreciate the support harrison. are you a part or full time seller?
Sooooo it’s xtina420??? Just give us the username dude! It’s not slander if it’s true. Bc I’m going to share by far the worst customer I’ve ever dealt w in decades of selling & it’s this username; starrybluewave84. She didn’t even have any plausible reason for leaving me the negative feedback she did, she didn’t have a return request she was beyond happy w the THREE separate transactions she had w me. The only reason she left me the negative she did was bc I wouldn’t allow her to extort me! Bc she had 3 very inexpensive purchases w me she than felt I owed her anything I had listed for whatever price she wanted & when she attempted to get a leather bag set that cost well over 1200 for $125 & I explained to her I was still trying to run a business & that was not feasible & she went completely off the rails & the response she left to my response was a complete lie! & not just a lie but an extremely slanderous damaging lie, to both my professional business & my personal life.
you nailed the username...lol. regarding the other seller you mentioned I added her based on the feedback she commonly leaves for others. I don't want that headache. much appreciation.
feedback takes a lot of time and energy . they dont care about sellers. i given up with feedback issues.
Patricia had this comment removed by youtube. "Buyers using freight forwarders for their eBay purchases do lose their buyer protection. BUT for that to happen, the seller must prove to eBay that the item was actually shipped by the freight forwarder to another country on the buyer's behalf. EBay does not assume that the item was forwarded by the freight forwarder to another country even if the ship-to address eBay provides the seller is that of a freight forwarder and the buyer account is registered in a foreign country. I was told by ebay that it could be that the buyer works at the freight forwarder and has them as their ship-to address so they can receive pkgs at work. As sellers we must get the buyer to disclose that the item will be reshipped by the freight forwarder to another country for the buyer. This is why Jeff recommends getting this info from the buyer before shipping to the Freight forwarder through messaging (or cancel the sale due to problem with address if buyer does not respond -- problem being the discrepancy between buyer country of ebay account registration vs country of freight forwarder address). If buyer does not disclose the planned reshipping they won't lose their buyer protections and can open cases against sellers. This has happened to me and I learned the hard way on a high value item. Buyer used a west coast USA freight forwarder and was registered in Asia. Would not admit location. Buyer leveraged neg feedback AND INAD case against me to try for a partial refund. I refused refund, sent a return shipping label and after return window closed eBay Trust and Safety closed buyer account. I proved he ran this scam on multiple sellers over several years and convinced eBay CS agent to file complaint against buyer as did I. Feedback extortion / abuse pattern and ITEM RETURN policy abuse. F around and find out."
Great thoughts!
Nice haircut, HF!
when they broke their search in 2023 it was all categories for us, they still turn our stores on and off
This past week I have received more in-state and surrounding state sales than I have since we have been on eBay. We've been on eBay for 2 years. We are in Indiana. Just seems very strange that this would start happening now. It's like they have decided with shipping costs being so high to let our items be seen more local. Just my thoughts.
I got a negative feedback from a buyer/seller who has over 56,000 feedback.

I believe that in UK, any buyer using freigth forwarder, is excluded from Buyer's Protection. I've got the same feeling, that PL is making more harm than good, on my account, with all those empty impressions. I was going to include that in my next weekend video.
Pete please see my long comment just posted here about eBay policy on freight forwarders and buyer protections.

Jeff channeling his inner jigsaw with buyers… “Let’s play a little game…”
hahaha
I think this will be ebays solution to the zero selling fee situation here in the UK. I was just setting up my new 3 day pr/l campaign at 2.1% and realised I couldn't do less than 5% now. My BIGGEST issue is the way they are sneaking this in without even informing us of the change. I will have a Video coming later today to discuss
the 5% dymamic PL is here in the US now, at least on my account.
my biggest issue is promoted listings. ..haha
How do you not do returns? I say that I don’t have returns, but I’ve had 3 people tell me item not as described and open a return. The item IS as described, photos etc. along with messages from buyer saying it just doesn’t fit… I was forced each time to give a return, send a return label… I had no choice, I was told by eBay that I could run the risk of a negative if I didn’t. eBay also said, they didn’t want to lose a buyer and I should understand that - even though they were fraudulent.
obviously if there is an issue with the item I'm forced to do it. i just don't do returns for buyers remorse.
@ yes. I tried that. If there is a problem with the item. But these were because they admitted they didn’t look at measurements in photos and it didn’t fit. But still said item not as described. That is where eBay said if I don’t accept the return and they have to step in, I will be bad for me. It’s so frustrating because I take my time to measure, point out flaws if any but it’s the fear of a bad review. As I said, even a neutral review changes my algorithm for a couple days after (each time) and I don’t sell anything after those reviews for a couple days. Anyways. I’m just frustrated. Sorry to vent. I appreciate your videos :)
I have my promoted listings up to 10% right now. James suggested to me 12%. What I do is keep it up there only until sales start dropping it back then I get rid of it for a while. At 12% I didn't find it helped me much. With promoted turned off at times for a while I was getting no sales for many days. I've started to mass list my stuff now on Facebook Marketplace in hope to get some extra sales out of it. So far it's helped me get a few people interested in items anyways,
I have not promoted in probably 6 months and I don't notice a difference. It depends on what you are selling obviously. If you have something good it will sell. That being said I have found new streams of income as I can no longer rely on only ebay.
What else are you doing tony?
The one thing I do as an online buyer to boycott this "fee for visibility" mentality is I never, never, EVER click on a sponsored/promoted ad to buy a product. I will always organic click/search for something and click on an item that is not sponsored. I even do this with my regular internet searches. I never click on sponsored ad results. This is my form of boycotting these large tech corporations. Doing this is within my power as a consumer and I am taking full advantage of my personal choice to not feed these tech corporations their greedy online ad visibility fees.
that is perfect!
I haven't listened to one of your videos in 6 months. I'm actually sad you're still in the exact spot you once were. I've been selling full time on eBay for 3 years, and part time for a number of years before that. I'm just about to tick over $300,000 gross sales for the year, with a 37.2% profit margin. Before you wonder, I don't have a specialist niche, I just sell clothing on bulk. The previous commenter, that you spoke about for 30 minutes, is correct. I lived through the eBay changes last year. I took time to work through it, figure it out, and never once did the nuclear reset you recommended. When you take accountability and stop trying to "hack" the system, and just work, life is genuinely easier. I really recommend you take time away and try and heal to gain some new perspective. Hard work genuinely trumps everything. Look after yourself.
well I'm not in the same exact spot since I've been building other platforms. Nobody is trying to hack the system and yay for your success. You are clearly a reselling god and I wonder what you are doing wasting your time here.
Is the hat San Francisco?
Seems to be the consensus

He's the most clueless eBay shrill out there. It's always our fault never eBay. I'm sure he gets kickbacks...
@ 100% , and highest visibility. Cant believe his viewers are so damn clueless
eBay is antiquated, they can’t handle it. Reasons for the greyouts” imo. More items , more transactions means more eBay employees needed to handle the customer service, tech etc…They do more firing than hiring. Heres a metaphor ….you running a landscaper business you already flooded with customers extremely backed up. You taking more calls? *listings** No. The Ebay site/people can’t handle the madness
you know how video games have various cheat codes? eBay programmers could have also created some cheats like keywords you can use somewhere to get free promotion.
did anybody try to 3X your prices and promote at 30 to 50%?
you could try and share with the class....lol. I mean you'd be giving the algorithm an expensive item and ebay would be thrilled with that much in PL....i just can't see that being a good strategy long term. lol
Someone at Ebay needs to see this video. This makes so much sense it'll be a no brainer to any business.
You hit it right on the head! I always wondered how a below par seller could jump to the front of the page with bad pictures, price, etc ... by just paying up on promoted listings. If the buyer is not interested in filtering the search results to get to the better listings Ebay is going to lose a buyer as they more than likely are going to leave and not buy.
until otherwise search is broken and it's such a bad look for ebay
Telling someone "sell better items" is like telling a race car driver to "just go faster". Yeah, that advice is technically correct, but there is a hell of a lot more nuance involved than that.
I've been on ebay since the first days. My store is years old. I doubled sales the first three years and was well on my way to doing it again in 2023. Then the blessed event happened in April and I went from 650 sales a month down to 160. Tell me the public suddenly stopped liking the items I sell! :P Whatever they are doing it will hit all stores eventually. I think they are running A/B experiments with promoted listings. I tried off site ads and it dropped my sales a further 60% over three months. I did it with the "help" of an ebay consultant. No matter how low my sales went, he would only talk about how well the campaign was going. The numbers of the campaign looked good, but my sales fell 60%!!!!! What does it matter at that point?
Having spent an hour on the phone to eBay finally getting to speak with a concierge, I explained im fed up with eBay selling as no matter what I do sales are erratic, I told him since the new algorithm sellers are constantly chasing their tails to get seen on first page. he looked through my shop and selling settings re: free postage 1 day dispatch good quality images and descriptions he said there is nothing more I can do as I'm ticking all the right boxes. So I then explained this is why me personally and hundreds of other sellers are thinking of jumping ship. He did admit the new algorithm uses both exact and broad search to display to buyers, and that they know its far from perfect and work is being done to improve things. Asked him about promoted listings and he said that no matter how much you place re: 5% or 15% will not get you on the first page, its mainly used to display your items across eBay within other sellers items etc, he did say as a top rated seller I should stay below 5% as being top rated gives you a little boost with cross advertising. we also talked about titles and gave him examples or word for word titles not displaying my items on the first page, and all he could say was yes the first four words are considered but the whole title has to make sense as in reading in good grammar. I've listed 20 similar items but changing the titles to be more readable rather than keyword stuffed, and today so far I have seen some results but this could be the new listing boost taking effect, time will tell.
Long time no see, I will like to leave a comment on 5:04 mark about so called ebay part seller who been selling for about 1 year. So let me get this straight, this seller has ONLY 50 active listing and somehow this seller makes over $200K on ebay platform. NOTHING makes any sense b/c I KNOW how ebay works, I have been ebay full time seller for 9 years. Only way this makes sense is that this seller has some sort of relationship with manufacture or wholesaler to get his product. I'm pretty damn sure that he is NOT selling preowned item (like most ebay seller), most likely new item. My best guess is that this seller is selling new watches, shoe, clothing, etc.. I don't NEED a advice for seller who been doing it for 1 year.
he is legit and we've been having some ongoing discussions. I'll be the first to say we can always learn something from anybody. If only ebay would actually listen to it's sellers.
Thank you for sharing. Prayers you have a blessed day in the name of Jesus Christ.
Oh! Speaking of charging buyer fees, Mercari sent me a survey yesterday asking my opinion on it: 1. Do i like it? 2. How has it impacted how I list? 3. Do i think it has helped or hindered sales? I think they know it's not well received, and may revert....
San Francisco!
Hi Jeff - Google lens your hat, and that will tell you what it says.
Don't worry about what others say. My eBay sales are down while other platforms are up. I sell the same items across platforms, so its not the items. Ebbs and flows! It's a 3rd party platform! Reselling is becoming over saturated! When sourcing, be sure to look for a few high ASP items. This will help with your money when sales are slow!
Yeah, I'm not really interested in his gross sales. Let's see his net profits. Somebody who only talks about gross sales makes me very suspicious.
Commenter is not wrong. It’s definitely your items. But it’s also how eBay is built. Long tail items have been killed. Your long tail items can’t sit any longer than 15-20 days, and you have to promote and do volume. The same activity the short-tail items generate we have to artificially generate for our longer items. Crosslisting and resets are what’s slowly turning my ship around.
If a grocery store sells 100 units of Gluten-Free Pasta per week, but then suddenly only sells 20 units per week because they keep it behind the counter where nobody can see it unless they ask for it,...well, that's the store manipulating what people "want". eBay no longer wants to be associated with antiques and quirky preowned trinkets...no matter how much demand there is. Ebay controls visibility of every category. When is the last time you saw an ebay commercial letting people know that they can buy cool stuff from the 1960's on ebay,...exactly,...it's all about Designer Handbags and Auto Parts now.
@ you’re basically supporting my argument. When people can’t get whst they want, they shop elsewhere, hence crosslisting. Etsy is advertising on Monday night football. We’re doing well on there. eBay’s not driving outside traffic so we have to manipulate their system to get things sold.
@@DenDecorDepot But you said "It's definitely your items", but yeah, according to ebay it's your items, -not according to the eBay buyers. The free market is gone on ebay.
if ebay no longer wants long tail unique items they should grow a pair and say instead of hide behind a cowardly algorithm. Instead they take the cowardly route, change the algo to screw the sellers that built the platform and take a wait and see approach to see if it works. if it doesn't they will quietly adjust it back to the way it was and act like everything is normal.
he proved 1/2 of your argument, which i agree with. i will disagree it's not my items, it's the platform.
We all listen to your channel with respect.. your views are very respectful so if a person is blatantly rude BLOCK OR BAN.. you don’t need the drama.. my first year on eBay was fabulous and THEN IT DIED.. so the grass is never greener in reality!
I think the hat says San Francisco to me
agreed
Jeff, it doesn't bother me when people do well on ebay, but calling your channel "a loser channel" is condescending not only to you, but the people who support you. And don't forget that when I called him out when I asked him if he was the one who called this a loser channel, he said that he "stood by it".
noted and i do agree.
