eBay is antiquated, they can’t handle it. Reasons for the greyouts” imo. More items , more transactions means more eBay employees needed to handle the customer service, tech etc…They do more firing than hiring. Heres a metaphor ….you running a landscaper business you already flooded with customers extremely backed up. You taking more calls? *listings** No. The Ebay site/people can’t handle the madness
you know how video games have various cheat codes? eBay programmers could have also created some cheats like keywords you can use somewhere to get free promotion.
did anybody try to 3X your prices and promote at 30 to 50%?
you could try and share with the class....lol. I mean you'd be giving the algorithm an expensive item and ebay would be thrilled with that much in PL....i just can't see that being a good strategy long term. lol
Someone at Ebay needs to see this video. This makes so much sense it'll be a no brainer to any business.
You hit it right on the head! I always wondered how a below par seller could jump to the front of the page with bad pictures, price, etc ... by just paying up on promoted listings. If the buyer is not interested in filtering the search results to get to the better listings Ebay is going to lose a buyer as they more than likely are going to leave and not buy.
until otherwise search is broken and it's such a bad look for ebay
Telling someone "sell better items" is like telling a race car driver to "just go faster". Yeah, that advice is technically correct, but there is a hell of a lot more nuance involved than that.
Having spent an hour on the phone to eBay finally getting to speak with a concierge, I explained im fed up with eBay selling as no matter what I do sales are erratic, I told him since the new algorithm sellers are constantly chasing their tails to get seen on first page. he looked through my shop and selling settings re: free postage 1 day dispatch good quality images and descriptions he said there is nothing more I can do as I'm ticking all the right boxes. So I then explained this is why me personally and hundreds of other sellers are thinking of jumping ship. He did admit the new algorithm uses both exact and broad search to display to buyers, and that they know its far from perfect and work is being done to improve things. Asked him about promoted listings and he said that no matter how much you place re: 5% or 15% will not get you on the first page, its mainly used to display your items across eBay within other sellers items etc, he did say as a top rated seller I should stay below 5% as being top rated gives you a little boost with cross advertising. we also talked about titles and gave him examples or word for word titles not displaying my items on the first page, and all he could say was yes the first four words are considered but the whole title has to make sense as in reading in good grammar. I've listed 20 similar items but changing the titles to be more readable rather than keyword stuffed, and today so far I have seen some results but this could be the new listing boost taking effect, time will tell.
Long time no see, I will like to leave a comment on 5:04 mark about so called ebay part seller who been selling for about 1 year. So let me get this straight, this seller has ONLY 50 active listing and somehow this seller makes over $200K on ebay platform. NOTHING makes any sense b/c I KNOW how ebay works, I have been ebay full time seller for 9 years. Only way this makes sense is that this seller has some sort of relationship with manufacture or wholesaler to get his product. I'm pretty damn sure that he is NOT selling preowned item (like most ebay seller), most likely new item. My best guess is that this seller is selling new watches, shoe, clothing, etc.. I don't NEED a advice for seller who been doing it for 1 year.
he is legit and we've been having some ongoing discussions. I'll be the first to say we can always learn something from anybody. If only ebay would actually listen to it's sellers.
Thank you for sharing. Prayers you have a blessed day in the name of Jesus Christ.
Oh! Speaking of charging buyer fees, Mercari sent me a survey yesterday asking my opinion on it: 1. Do i like it? 2. How has it impacted how I list? 3. Do i think it has helped or hindered sales? I think they know it's not well received, and may revert....
San Francisco!
Hi Jeff - Google lens your hat, and that will tell you what it says.
Don't worry about what others say. My eBay sales are down while other platforms are up. I sell the same items across platforms, so its not the items. Ebbs and flows! It's a 3rd party platform! Reselling is becoming over saturated! When sourcing, be sure to look for a few high ASP items. This will help with your money when sales are slow!
Yeah, I'm not really interested in his gross sales. Let's see his net profits. Somebody who only talks about gross sales makes me very suspicious.
Commenter is not wrong. It’s definitely your items. But it’s also how eBay is built. Long tail items have been killed. Your long tail items can’t sit any longer than 15-20 days, and you have to promote and do volume. The same activity the short-tail items generate we have to artificially generate for our longer items. Crosslisting and resets are what’s slowly turning my ship around.
If a grocery store sells 100 units of Gluten-Free Pasta per week, but then suddenly only sells 20 units per week because they keep it behind the counter where nobody can see it unless they ask for it,...well, that's the store manipulating what people "want". eBay no longer wants to be associated with antiques and quirky preowned trinkets...no matter how much demand there is. Ebay controls visibility of every category. When is the last time you saw an ebay commercial letting people know that they can buy cool stuff from the 1960's on ebay,...exactly,...it's all about Designer Handbags and Auto Parts now.
@ you’re basically supporting my argument. When people can’t get whst they want, they shop elsewhere, hence crosslisting. Etsy is advertising on Monday night football. We’re doing well on there. eBay’s not driving outside traffic so we have to manipulate their system to get things sold.
@@DenDecorDepot But you said "It's definitely your items", but yeah, according to ebay it's your items, -not according to the eBay buyers. The free market is gone on ebay.
if ebay no longer wants long tail unique items they should grow a pair and say instead of hide behind a cowardly algorithm. Instead they take the cowardly route, change the algo to screw the sellers that built the platform and take a wait and see approach to see if it works. if it doesn't they will quietly adjust it back to the way it was and act like everything is normal.
he proved 1/2 of your argument, which i agree with. i will disagree it's not my items, it's the platform.
We all listen to your channel with respect.. your views are very respectful so if a person is blatantly rude BLOCK OR BAN.. you don’t need the drama.. my first year on eBay was fabulous and THEN IT DIED.. so the grass is never greener in reality!
I think the hat says San Francisco to me
agreed
Jeff, it doesn't bother me when people do well on ebay, but calling your channel "a loser channel" is condescending not only to you, but the people who support you. And don't forget that when I called him out when I asked him if he was the one who called this a loser channel, he said that he "stood by it".
noted and i do agree.
If you search hunting knife, there are 170,000 listings. When you search how many hunting knives have sold there are 130,000 solds.
I was the other person who was team "Cole Williams" on the other video, so I'll go into a deeper explanation on a few things you brought up and why they're important to me. To start, if you want me to email you my store I'll be happy to do that, I'm a traditional reseller like yourself where I sell "everything." I have about a 80 percent STR with 1500 active listings. I cross post to Mercari, Poshmark, Depop, and Facebook getting my STR to close to 100 percent. This isn't meant to brag or pat myself on the back, just provide some background on my situation. I'm willing to prove it, but also not wanting to just shove my numbers in your face, I get how that can come off as. eBay and reselling provided me an escape from a job that I hated. It gave me complete control over my life and I've been fortunate enough to be able to help other people around me escape their jobs by reselling. I am bothered that beginners may see videos telling them that they are not in control of their own success when it comes to selling on eBay. We will probably never agree on this, so I won't dive to much further into that other than that's why I participate, as well as to keep myself out of my own echo chamber and hear thoughts that are different from my own. The everything is your fault mindset is a a mindset that's taught to maintain control of your life. For example, if you walk down the street and slap me, my thought would be what I'm going to do in the future to make sure that doesn't happen to me again, versus do the same thing over and over, then keep getting slapped which I feel is the mindset of the eBay doom crowd. There's too many items to count that I sold last year, two years ago, etc that are no longer good items. It's not because eBay hides them, it's because the demand is gone. I stop buying them and move on to more profitable items. If you go back to someone like James, he has videos from 4 years ago where he's complaining about the same stuff he is now. He has videos from 6 years ago where he's complaining about the exact same things he's complaining about now when everything was "working well." He has no point ever where he is not complaining about glitches, the algorithm, etc, that is just what he does and why I cannot ever take what he says with any merit. He seems to be the idol of the doom crowd, which is why I reference him here. Lastly, if you want eBay to care about you, buy stock. Whether you're on team "cole" or team "hayfro," a billion dollar company aims to appease stockholders. Deep down, they do not and will not ever care about what is best for the seller or buyer, once everyone learns to accept that you can best use the app to benefit yourself financially. They exist to appease the stock holders and we are tools for them to provide the rest returns they can. Side note, here's some questions I have for you, these are genuine questions but straight forward to help myself and others like myself better understand where your gripe is: 1. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you do not comp or use STR when sourcing. With that being said, if you're not doing that, why do you think those items should sell if you're not using the tools that allow you to check if they sell and how often? 2. Do you ever think a lot of your items aren't "seen" on eBay because they're so broad? For example, I've seen you've sold your wife's paintings on locally. She does great work. For example, if she paints the ocean, isn't it probable that there's just too many paintings of the ocean for the world to see it on ebay? Locally, the audience is broader and there won't be 46,000 other options, can this logic apply to many of your listings because they're so obscure? 3. Regardless of what you believe the factors are, at what point do you adjust what you sell if you're not happy with the results on ebay?
Excellent video. Let's be 1000% honest about the Internet and social media: Schadenfreude is one of our national pastimes. Furthermore, people love to crow about how good they've got it, even (especially) when they don't have it so good. It's a growing sickness, and it has a clear social impact, especially among teenagers and those under-developed adults who still over-value acceptance. Let the self-righteous spin their half-truths. Tune them out.
Much like guys who go around telling people how tough they are, people who go around bragging about how rich and successful they are... usually are not. Even if they appear super successful, one has to wonder what their net vs gross is... and how much debt they have...
If all your items are selling everywhere BUT ebay,...it's definitely "not your items", it's the eBay selling platform. Also, ebay randomly deletes hundreds of my items from my store each year WITHOUT informing me, -even items with many watchers. Ebay also has a rotating invisibility cloak on most of your items...in addition to the search tool being broken,...so technically it's almost impossible to tell anybody "it's your items",...we will never truly know until the Search Function actually works.
Some web designer cried the day that eBay spammed all of its pages with those dumb PL impressions. It is truly a sh!t show from a design perspective.

That's what ebay will advise, when you ask them what to do, during ebay open. Overprice to acomodate PL. It's suicidal strategy in a long run for ebay, seller and buyer. The "massager guy" doesn't even realise that being successfull in very narrow niche is super dangerous. All you need is one copycat who's smarter than you, and you're business goes down the drain.
yep. I dont have to worry about that with my inventory. nobody is buying what I'm buying...lol...

San Francisco
Yup
I used to sell 25+ items a day until April of 2023. I guess I was chosen then not. :P I don't see how me selling less helps Ebay. After talking to the ebay promotion consultant, it sounded like he had no idea how all this stuff works. When I explained why off site promotions killed my sales, he seemed befuddled. It's easy: one-offs are punished by this algorithm. They'd be better off creating two sites: one for what ebay has always been and one for new items like Amazon.
I've been saying this for a while: the old ebay sellers who were selling one-offs are being kicked to the curb. I wish my sales only went down 50%. For me it was 75%! I tried every promotion Ebay has with the assistance of an actual Ebay consultant. The end result: after 3 months my sales went down a further 60% ! I quit all promotions and went back to daily resets. My sales came back up 70% the next week. The resets still help me. I reset 1/30th of my store every day. It's not the bomb, but it certainly helps. Essentially ebay wants to sell new goods like Amazon. FYI, I ran out of free listings this week, so I had to stop resetting. In 4 days my page views fell 48%. Now that's not sales, so I may continue this experiment a little longer to see what happens.
Great to see a new video! You don’t always have to have some great insights to share, we just like to see you! Miss seeing what you source and what you sell. Please consider doing those again.
i will likely do some of those in the future as it's easy non controversial content and I enjoy those very much. thanks for supporting the channel jrkr.
Jeff did you look at my store metrics in the email I sent? can you recognize that not everyone's sales are struggling on ebay and that if you have great items you will have great sales?
Örülök, hogy csatlakozhatsz hozzánk!
@miketutor3514 semmiképpen nem csatlakozom hozzád
The information in these videos is going wayyyyy over your head. There are massive changes with how eBay operates and manipulates buyers and sellers. However, if you sell expensive in-demand niche items, the algorithm will NOT affect you, so congrats, -you deserve a prize. FYI, Hayfro and everybody else is aware that not "everyone" is struggling, -but that does NOT prove that eBay isn't dysfunctional.
@NashTV8 believe me I get it. It boils down to if you sell in demand items for a great price, you will have great sales. If you sell items that are not in demand you end up here blaming ebay. Ebay wants to sell your items. They know what sells and what doesn't and choose to put more eyeballs on the items more likely to convert. Anyone would do the same thing.
Im the 69 like noice! eBay has been brutal lately. I've lost a lot of momentum and drive. I feel if you "figure" anything out the algorithm figures out how to neutralize it. Just like uf you sell to much it will slow you down
it does feel exactly like that.
Please Keep doing these Videos.
hi Anthony, appreciate your comments and support.
Great Honest Assessment.
Great Video. I agree with your Points.
I'm trying to remember to use my social media more to pull people in so it doesn't matter what Ebay does. I've looked a few times to see of there is some kind of automatic sharing tool for multiple socials but I haven't found anything that looks decent.
i believe ebay has some ways to share your listings to one's social networks, I personally just don't feel that we should have to do that. my networks are my networks, that is what we give our final value fees to ebay for, to find us customers.
Jeff you’re the voice of the people, I pray you never stop making videos because your tongue in cheek wit and quips keep me going some days. Thank you for speaking your mind and all you add to the conversation
i really appreciate this comment zachariah....it means the world to me to connect with people on this level. cheers and all the best.🤍
Great video Jeff, hope everyone is feeling better in the household. Keep up the great work my friend.
As usual spot on!
That video was actually kind of vindicating for me. With the promoted listings, I had been thinking the high promoted rates were what tanked my store (clothing) last year. Whenever I would shop ebay for clothing as a buyer, I would notice that even if I filtered to my size, I was getting lots of promoted results from other sizes, and if I was on a listing for an item in my size, I would scroll to the related (promoted) items and they were showing other sizes. After this, I realized if ebay was pushing items to me in the wrong size that I would never buy, then they must be pushing my items to a lot of other people who will never buy them. I dropped my promoted rates in half and it actually helped a lot. A couple months ago, I was in another YTer's live and was talking about this. Some apologists were actually ridiculing me for thinking that promoted listings could be affecting my sales like this. They made it sound like ebay search was totally fine and if I was getting unrelated results I was doing something wrong. They also made me feel like I was an idiot for filtering to a particular size and expecting to only get results for that size, as if this is how other clothing sites operate (they don't). It was a bunch of other sellers who don't even buy/sell clothing trying to "educate" me on how the ebay algorithm operates for clothing. All I can say is if ebay wants buyers to shop there they need to make it easy for buyers to find what they're looking for. No one can survive if ebay apologists are the only ones who are able to shop on ebay.
Let me guess....reseller Bros mansplaining
True, -which makes comping difficult. I'll have an expensive 3XL hoodie, and then I'll notice that 2 other sellers also have a 3XL, so I click on their listings...only to realize that they actually have a Small and Medium, -cuz the algorithm rarely filters out promoted listings......which could frustrate buyers(and sellers) who accidentally buy the wrong size. Btw, YT deleted your comment and can only be seen by sorting "newly listed".
@@NashTV8 Yeah, YT does this with my comments constantly, I'd say like at least half of my comments. I'm not sure why and I don't know how to fix it.
@@mayakoyama9130 Yup, a majority of my comments are instantly deleted,...probably because I have a bad "social credit score" from not taking the Jhab'
Awesome video as usual! One of the big confirmations for me, in regards to selling limits, was when Burbank Sportscards (one of ebay's largest sports card sellers) changed platforms because the owner said, "I always feel there's a glass ceiling with any marketplace".
agreed. since on youtube for the last 18 months many others have confirmed what I suspected.
Do more videos .. 👍 I like the way you do local sales.. I just wish I could but I’m a nervous freak & watch too much CSI crime murder mysteries 😂 you being a guy is a lot safer! I miss Facebook shipping.. that was very odd how facebook purposely destroyed that, I used to get daily sales! Now mercari is dead because they charge the customer fees.. so I do agree with diversifying and just wish we had more to choose from! I used to sell on Amazon & still have items on there but they really don’t show items unless you give them you entire biometrics! I think we need to also look at google.. no one mentions google that I believe could be favoring platforms more than they used to! Kick backs seems to be the normal way to go for many big businesses!
you should give district a try, i'm not limiting my marketplace to just pop culture items anymore so you are welcome to join. i'll be doing a video in the coming weeks about how I am getting on the first page of google with many of my obscure items. Obviously I've only had one sale but I think that is more of the fact that people don't know about it but I keep listing there because I'm hopeful in time they will emerge a real competitor.
I've hit a wall. I don't care about watchers. I will send an offer, and if they don't accept then I just delete and relist when the time comes. I don't care anymore about keeping eBay happy. It's one of five platforms that I use, and maybe 3% of my income streams - I teach and publish work, I have commercial rentals (ironically the USPS is my tenant), and standard investments. My partner also contributes to my household. I'm in the fortunate position that I don't have to care. This is not to say, I don't strive to keep that 100% feedback rating, but I just don't care where I show up in algorithms.
I'm happy to hear you're in this position. I felt the same way when I left ebay full time. It was like having 90% of my stress gone instantly. It took me two years but I eventually found a good job and only sell on ebay casually.
you are awesome and I'm thrilled to hear all of that. I hope you are slightly overcharging your usps guys since they overcharge us twice a year. haha.
Thank you for this video. You are not alone!
