🎣FISHING🎣RIVERS🎣 LAKES🎣OCEAN🎣 WE DO IT ALL!
Fishing is not just about catching fish. It is about carrying on a family tradition. My father taught me at age 6 how to catch fish. That obsession grew to include Salmon, Steelhead, Kokanee, Halibut, Ling Cod, Rock Fish, Tuna and more.
From catching Trout in France in the 60's, to Salmon & Arctic Grayling in Alaska during the 70's, & 80's, to Montana Browns and Florida's Snook & Hammerhead Sharks, I may help you become a better fisherman with tips, tricks and useful advice. Maybe even the occasional word of wisdom. While I do not consider myself a "fishing expert", I do rely on a vast frame of reference I am more than willing to share with you.

Highly Sought After Species Most People Mis-Identify
Many people mistake these highly sought after fish for Kokanee because of their small scales and super bright coloration however, they are not Kokanee.
The resides in deep reservoirs similar to Kokanee and Trout and even Land Locked Coho Salmon prevalent in Lakes like Riffe Lake which houses plenty of Land locked Coho however they are Resident Coastal Cutthroat Trout.
Resident coastal cutthroat trout are one of three subspecies of cutthroat trout that occur in Washington and one of the two that are native. The other native is the Westslope. There is also an anadromous, or ‘sea-run’ coastal cutthroat. The Coastals have dark green backs with olive sides and silver bellies along with numerous irregular spotting over their entire body, including below the lateral line.
Resident cutthroat trout can be mistaken for rainbow trout, but they have two distinguishing features that rainbow do not: the underside of the cutthroat’s lower jaw has red slash marks on each side (where it gets its name from) and small teeth on the back of the tongue. The cutthroat's upper jaw also extends past the back edge of the eye, where is does not in rainbow (except for rainbow over 20 inches).Average 7-9 inches. Coastal cutthroat can grow to 10-18 inches in quality populations.

Locating Wary Fish & Making Them Bite

A fog filled morning turns bright and beautiful. The day went from zero visibility to crystal clear in just a few short hours. That is when the bite turned on and the fish went from peckish to ravenous. The surface was teaming with swirls of Rainbow Trout searching for breakfast as the Sun warmed the water's surface. I trolled using the downrigger with a pink and chrome dodger leading a 10" 10l...

Anchor?
@@FishingNW hard to anchor in 80ft. But... I do have anew bow mount with Spotlock.
Great attitude and content. I'm a 63 year old native Oregonian that has pushed and hunted since I was old enough. Never fished the southern oregon rivers. Now that I'm retired, I may try a few. You have a great set up! My Das was a broker for 50 plus years in the Salem area 😊
@@krisshepherd740 nice
Wow that’s far offshore for that type fish
@@pnwgrown_360 The distance and depth is half the fun.
Liked and subbed. I haven’t made it to Westport yet, one day I will. Mostly in zone 7-6
@@pnwgrown_360 Whole different experience on the open ocean.
Dry fly in the middle of winter😂.
@northwestfishingfanatics: Where did your buddy get the metal center console with rod holders? What size kill bags are slotted in there and about how many Tuna can you fit in each kill bag? I love the setup and use of space. Plus it's removable when not Tuna fishing.
@@OwenTaylor-u8f not sure of the size but depends on the tuna. Sometimes we only get 10. Other times more. The rack is custom made by Steve. Another buddy not in this video.
@ appreciate the info and love your channel! Tight Lines
@OwenTaylor-u8f no problem. Thanks
You say "soft in your old age" I say smart in your old age.

I was wondering why you weren't using the Minn Kota for trolling. I love using mine. Quiet, and relaxing to use. Have you had any luck with kokanee on American Lake? I have not fished it, but heard it has been a tough fishery for several years. Thanks for the videos.
@@billmacaras4146 some luck. Later in the year. Problem is water skiers get up pretty early and churn things up so you only get a short time frame.
you need to take ur sons, grandkids fishing paps...😊
Slink salmon ?

Ive found using the down riggers weights that are shaped like a fish dont pull back as far as the balls and if you put a ceramic insulator on the down rigger line with a small pungy with slight tension on it will take the wire sing out of the downriver. We used the ceramic insulators on our commercial spreads to take the vibration and sing out of the downrigger lines. Try using panco or crushed corn flakes on the outside of your fish its really crunchy and has great flavor.
@@william6526 …. Pictures of your set-up…? Mainly the ceramic insulators. Thanks
Thanks for sharing that tip, I'll give it a try.
I just use braided downrigger line.

I recently moved from Gig Harbor back to Bend OR. So great yo watch you fishing the same lakes I used to fish. Great videos!
Thanks for watching.
Another great Saturday with Gene…👍🏻 Question though… Why 6’ on the down-rigger clip..?
I used to like long down rigger clips because you don’t have to lean over the water to clip your line. I would tilt my DR up to grab the clip. Then drop it back down. In rough water it’s much safer.
what hebsaid. easier and safer.
When do start winter steelhead fishing the cowlitz?
Google: cowlitz dam counts. They update weekly and they have historical averages got 5 and 10 years
now. I'll be there in a few days.
I'm loving these local lake videos. Brings back memories of when i had a lake boat and fished all of these lakes. Beautiful looking day out there. Here i am going chasing Steelhead today
It's a great day to be out there.
Enjoy watching your videos!
Glad you enjoy them.
There are some rather large cutthroat in that lake. Found that out while fishing for crappie.
That's awesome!
a fly rod would kill on that lake
Heyy! I work at the Cowlitz Trout Hatchery, let's go fishing sometime!!

Yep 5. same as Trout.
I hate when the non locals call them Kokanee. I won’t spill the name of that lake but you know what I’m talking about 😂
Definitely not Kokanee. Back in the 90's and earlier it was full of Kokanee.
@@Northwestfishingfanatics i caught one that was 16 inches. Pretty cool they have them on there like that. Must be cold out there tho
I've spent many days circling by the dam catching those fish. My biggest was a 3lb land lock coho. That lake is great for bass fishing too.

Have to give you credit for braving the wind by yourself. I think I would have waited it out. Fish were small like you say but they were really nice. Thanks for sharing.
It was a fun day on the water thanks.
When I troll in those kinds of conditions, I lock the steering on my kicker and use the bow mount as a thruster to move the bow.
I thought it was blowing too hard to use the bow mount. thanks for watching.
@@Northwestfishingfanatics I don’t use the bow mount for propulsion, I use it to change directions. I use the kicker for propulsion and lock the steering.
Its been about 5 years since ive been to that lake, but seems like the fish have gotten a lot smaller. Still fun, but we used to catch 1-2 pounders on the regular
That'd be nice if they were bigger. I have caught a few around the 18-20" range.

On Riffe Lake there are coves to fish during high winds, and you should always troll with the wind, (which in high pressure is usually from the east). Just be mindful of the depths at all times. If it gets too bad there is always Mayfield right down Hwy 12, (same gear and techniques).

Use tarnex on your copper or aluminum jigs. You just wipe it on and they shine like new. Much easier then using a wire wheel.
