Fast & Furious Coho Salmon Fishing Action

- When the fat lady sings, the Cowlitz River Coho Salmon run is over. Fortunately for me, I had my ear plugs in when she was bellowing out the last round of total run numbers.
For the week prior to December 2, 2024 the returning Coho numbers were 1021 Adults and 52 Coho Jacks.
For the week of December 9, 2024 the returning Coho numbers were 466 Coho Adults and only 20 Coho Jacks.
Then, for the week prior to this video, the returning Coho numbers were 1345 Coho Adults and 66 Coho Jacks. Meaning there was a substantial increase from the week before.
It is hard to say what the continued December rains will do for the 2024 Salmon runs, but I will say this, this time down to the Cowlitz River Barrier Dam Hatchery Pool was a whole lot of fun...
I floated my signature cured eggs periodically doused in Pro Cure's Bloody Tuna Oil. I also caught a couple twitching Jigs of various colors. And to add some excitement, I tripped and fell while fighting a fish and broke my rod tip. It is always something... :-)
If you want to see how I cure my eggs, watch these two videos.

@@JoseGonzalez-nt3ws good luck
Nice job Gene! 👊🏻
@@ryananey7626 Thank you.
Those days are the best. Had a day on the trinity river in Northern California like this, count was low, didn't expect much, landed 2 nice steelhead in a matter of 30 minutes. Great video!
@@brybridgee thanks.. It was a pleasant surprise to see fish there at all after last week's numbers. Thanks for watching.
Great content... keep em coming 👍👍👍
Appreciate that. Thanks for watching.

@@jacobhansen9823 for sure
I was fishing blue creek today and didnt have any luck. I guess you dont need luck when you got all the wisdom. Great content. Tight lines
@@seahawksFishing Thanks. Steelhead should be starting to show around Blue Creek.
@Northwestfishingfanatics besides eggs what do you think your go to set up for steelhead is. I've been fishing that river for awhile and can't seem to get one. Any help would be awesome. Tight lines!!!
@seahawksFishing I don't do well with Steelhead either. But... when I fished more for Steelies I did well with marabou jigs under a clear drift float. My buddy does well with divers and coon shrimp. Guys do well drifting corkies around the corner dowriver from the ramp..
@@Northwestfishingfanatics thanks for the help man. I'm gonna try that on monday!
There's been a lot of sturgeon in the system.
Way to take advantage of the warm weather!
got lucky
Merry Christmas Gene! Breaking that rod sucks! I hope it’s covered under warranty!
Thanks for watching! I'll just fix it myself.
Finally you catch a fish on your video 😂😂
@@pastmasters9591 haha that NEVER HAPPENS. 🤣
Honestly I absolutely love your channel!! I was just poking a little fun
Seriously lol
@@pastmasters9591 😄 no problem. I laugh at myself all the time.
If you think great river fishermen catch fish every single time they go out when they go out at least once a week... you're crazy lol!
I was fishing on the other side and hit a snag, I thought, and when it pulled lose it was a fish that looked the size of a sheet of plywood...
@@edwardenglish1519 that's always exciting
What should I use for staging kings in Puget sound, when they get picky about August September? I'm currently running flasher squid, flasher spoon, plugs, and nothing 🤷 only jigging has been good for me. Lost one last year his tail to dorsal was about 22" thx professor
@@kingchaser-c4t Staging? Where? Like Commencement Bay, or FishTrap? May vary depending on where...
Pt defiance, slag pile, Puyallup mouth, thx. I've been watching the kings at 30-60 ft down on the sonar but they aren't biting anything but jigging on bottom
@@kingchaser-c4t Those are probably Winter Blackmouth, technically Kings/Chinook but are resident to Puget Sound waters. When I used to fish with meat poles, we'd drop the weight and hit the bottom, the bring it up just enough to have the flasher tapping the bottom once in a while. Now I just set the downrigger just above the bottom based on sonar depth. Herring, plugs, spoons will work, but you gotta get them as close to the bottom as possible. Hope this helps.
Copy that thanks 💪

Nice fish Gene! Love watching your videos. Does Okuma cover the broken rod??
@@moretime2fish Probably not. I keep a variety of tips and eyes. Their easy to fix.
I think Bob's is good at replacing the whole tip section on Okuma rods. I know my son has done it a few times.@@Northwestfishingfanatics
@justlooking1958 I just glue on a new tip. Good enough for me. 😆
You should be fishing for sturgeon. In that hole, look up a sturgeon, rig cast it up in there, see what happens.
Not worth it.
@@coreycorey2220 I doubt I'd never land it. Would be heck of a fightt
Nice. At least you didn't break your hand or a finger when you fell. Did you get a first Aid kit in your boat yet!!!!!
I thought about how lucky I am and how easy it could have been to break something more than my rod. not yet. 🤔
